Despite many calls to reform undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education to incorporate active learning into classes, there has been little attention paid to graduate level classrooms or courses taught by graduate students. Here, we set out to understand if and how STEM graduate students’ perceptions of active learning change in the classes they take versus those they teach. We found that graduate students had taken relatively few graduate level classes using active learning and they felt that more time should be devoted to active learning in the courses they were taking. Teaching assistants felt that they were devoting the right amount of class time to active learning in the classes they taught. Graduate students also felt that they were using teaching methods in the classes they taught that were different from those they thought should be used when teaching undergraduates and were different from how they preferred to learn when taking classes.

What conditions make learning efficient? Do adaptive methods — that use learner performance to arrange learning events — offer ways of improving learning? In this dissertation, I address these questions experimentally in human subjects across domains of factual and perceptual learning. Six experiments focus on methods of scheduling the order of presentation of items during a learning session with the goal of improving long-term retention. We introduce a method of determining spacing schedules using an adaptive, computer-based algorithm. Space between presentations is dynamically calculated as a function of a learner's response history and reaction time. This work is based on the spacing effect in memory: when learning a set of facts, scheduling time between repeated presentations or practice has been shown to improve learning. Larger gaps between presentations of an item contribute to increases in the strength of that item in memory. The primary experimental manipulation in these studies is a comparison between fixed schedules of practice and adaptive schedules of practice. Three crucial issues are tested. First, the effects of spacing in adaptive, computer-based schedules are compared to predetermined schedules that have fixed intervals of spacing. Second, adaptive schedules are compared to schedules that are completely randomized, and the difference between schedules with and without dropout is compared. Finally, the benefits of adaptive scheduling are assessed using perceptual category learning. Results of the first set of experiments showed that an adaptive scheduling algorithm produced greater learning gains than fixed schedules, when the total number of presentations was limited. These gains were measurable after a one-week delay. Further, when fixed condition schedules were closely matched to adaptive scheduling in overall item spacing characteristics, adaptive schedules still outperformed them in terms of learning gains at immediate and delayed tests. As new democracies such as the Republic of Estonia decide how to structure their military forces for the future, they will need to determine the mix of two different force components: standing active-duty forces, and reserve forces composed of citizen-soldiers. This thesis argues that reliance on reserves can offer significant advantages over standing forces, depending on a nation's external security requirements and domestic economic constraints. In particular, citizen-soldier reserves can allow nations that do not face immediate external threats, such as Estonia, to meet their security requirements for less money than required by standing forces. Citizen-soldier reserves are also less likely to pose a domestic threat to democratic civilian control. This research addresses the tunable assembly of reversible colloidal structures within microfluidic networks to engineer multifunctional materials that exhibit a wide range of electrical properties. Our work has focused on studying electric field-directed assembly of gold colloids and understanding how tuning colloidal configurations can be utilized to modulate electrical properties within a microfluidic electric circuit. More specifically, we have found that a single circuit element can act as a variable resistor, capacitor, and inductor by regulating the colloidal structures within the gap between electrodes. Navigating the applied AC voltage-frequency phase space allows us to probe a wide range of colloidal configurations that resemble "capacitive" and "resistive" networks in their limiting cases. All colloidal configurations formed were reversible and repeatable, and it was possible to switch from one configuration to other interchangeably. Based on a scaling analysis, different electrokinetic forces that drive assembly have been identified. The scaling analysis was able to consistently interpret experimental observations of particle dynamics over the planar electrode system, and can be extended, within limits, to more complex electrode geometries for future studies., The original document contains color images.

In this panel discussion, we discuss these and other practical issues to be addressed in implementing software reliability measurement techniques in a production development environment. The panelists will describe their experiences in implementing measurement programs, the intended and actual results, and suggestions for making them more effective.

This thesis demonstrates how the parameters of a slightly non-homogeneous medium can be derived approximately from the reflection coefficient. Two types of media are investigated. The first is described by the one-dimensional wave equation, the second by the more complex Timoshenko beam equation. In both cases, the media are assumed to be infinite in extent, with the media parameters becoming homogeneous as the space variable approaches positive or negative infinity. Much effort is placed in deriving properties of the reflection coefficient for both cases. The wave equation is considered primarily to introduce the techniques used to investigate the more complex Timoshenko equation. In both cases, an approximation is derived for one of the medium parameters involving the reflection coefficient.

A sample space of patients was divided into two mutually exclusive groups, those with angiographic evidence of CHD, and those with no CHD. Active duty or retired military men between the ages of 30 and 67 years constituted the sample space. Tests and risk factors were available in the medical literature that a doctor could view as an indicator or contraindicator of CHD. A vector of these possible indicators was established and the diseased group was compared to the non-diseased group in an effort to evaluate the diagnostic potential of the indicators. This was done by discriminant analysis in conjunction with a Bayesian method of weighting the importance of test results. The important indicators were then used to formulate a model for diagnosing CHD based on a Bayes' decision technique. (Author)

British composers in the latter half of the twentieth century pursued a belated version of musical modernism rebelling against the establishment by ‘returning’ to little known medieval manuscripts. The contradiction here is an interesting one, and what the author identifies here as modernist medievalism—the contradictory appropriation of the medieval to expressly forward-thinking ends—is explicitly intertextual. This chapter argues that a modernist composer conjuring the medieval is doing something less than the literal representation of an ‘authentic’ past than they are engaging in a nexus of imaginary (re)representations of a non-contiguous and Other, shared, version of history, one that elides any such reified notions of the ‘high’ and the ‘low’ and unites disparate fields of artistic activity. Beginning with a brief summary of twentieth century precedents focussed principally on the ‘Tudor medievalism’ of, among others, Benjamin Britten, the author turns his attention to the contrasting medievalisms of Peter Maxwell Davies and Harrison Birtwistle. And specifically, their career-long appropriation of the works of earlier composers John Taverner and Guillaume de Machaut (respectively). For the former example, Davies entered into existent intertextual networks incorporating In Nomine and Dies Irae chants; whereas in the latter case, Birtwistle repeatedly rearranges, deforms, and disguises the techniques of the medieval poet-composer.

Born Moses Schoenfeld in the Lower East Side of New York on New Year’s Day 1867, Lew Fields spent his formative years in the vibrant playground of the celebrated “melting pot.” The child of immigrants himself, he would soon meet his long-term friend and working partner Joe Weber (1867-1942) in the chaotic streets around the Bowery. Their characters Mike and Meyer garbled the English language while trying to concoct get-rich schemes and assimilate into American society. In 1904 the team split and Joe Weber took over the running of the venue while Lew Fields continued to perform. Fields fell into producing his own shows, and thanks to a number of early successes, was soon taken on by the Shubert Brothers as a partner. This chapter explores Fields’ work as a producer, both with the Shuberts and independently. It considers Fields’ relationship with collaborators including his son Herbert and the young writing team of Rodgers and Hart, and it contextualises Fields’ contribution to the developing tendency towards integration, which Fields called “Coherency.” Fields’ attitudes and approach are seen as fundamental contributors to the development of the integrated Broadway musical as it emerged in the 1940s.

This chapter outlines methods of creative labor in the musical to expand conceptions of the creator. By reframing existing narratives of well-known creative teams while taking into account the work of under-explored creators and practitioners, we address gaps in historiography. In our corrective approach we consider contemporary and historical case studies alongside one another in order to expand our definition of musical theatre creators and collaborators and better understand the processes, practicalities and evolution of musical theatre.
