Abstract

The LHCb experiment foresees a new era of high luminosity, aiming to clarify persistent tensions between experiments and the SM predictions, such as those related to the flavour sector. This thesis is devoted to the measurement of the LFU ratios R(D0) and R(D*0), with the 3-prong hadronic tau decay modes, using LHCb Run 2 data. Even though the final result is blinded and the systematics uncertainties need to be computed, the signal branching fraction are obtained with a competitive precision. Moreover, the computation of the statistical and external uncertainties of the R(D(*)0) ratios hints that the analysis documented here will be a relevant contribution to the LFU sector. Furthermore, a contribution to the LHCb detector upgrade is documented, based on testing the new hybrid pixel VELO sensors' performance.

Abstract

A search is performed for rare and forbidden charm decays of the form D+(s)→h±ℓ+ℓ(′)∓, where h± is a pion or kaon and ℓ(′)± is an electron or muon. The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb−1, collected by the LHCb experiment in 2016. No evidence is observed for the 25 decay modes that are investigated and 90 % confidence level limits on the branching fractions are set between 1.4 × 10−8 and 6.4 × 10−6. In most cases, these results represent an improvement on existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude

Abstract

Asearch is presented for a Higgs-like boson with mass in the range 45 to 195 GeV/c2 decaying into a muon and a tau lepton. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb−1. The tau leptons are reconstructed in both leptonic and hadronic decay channels. An upper limit on the production cross-sectionmultiplied by the branching fraction at 95% confidence level is set and ranges from 22 pb for a boson mass of 45 GeV/c2 to 4 pb for a mass of 195 GeV/c2.
