Introduction. Investigating drug trends among Australian gay and bisexual men (GBM) is crucial for understanding levels of use and the potential for harm, including HIV transmission risk. Method. Using repeated, national, cross‐sectional survey data collected between 2012 and 2021 (69,567 surveys), trends of recent (previous 6 months) and frequent (weekly) drug use were analysed, using logistic regression models. The last round of data from each jurisdiction (6709 surveys) was used to compare GBM who reported no use, infrequent (less than weekly) use and frequent (at least weekly) use of party drugs to investigate the association between party drug use and HIV transmission risk, using multinomial logistic regression models. Results. There was a significant upward trend in any recent drug use (from 58.4% in 2012 to 64.1% in 2021; p<0.001). Frequent party drug use remained a minority practice over the period (consistently less than 3%). In cross‐sectional analysis, frequent party drug users were more likely to report behaviours with HIV transmission risks, such as condomless anal intercourse without biomedical prevention strategies (30.0% vs. 13.1%; adjusted relative risk ratio [aRRR], 2.08; 95% CI, 1.24–3.47), weekly group sex (16.3% vs. 0.6%; aRRR, 12.36; 95% CI, 5.75–26.56) and more than 20 recent sexual partners (42.5% vs. 5.0%; aRRR, 21.44; 95% CI, 5.82–78.89), compared with GBM who did not use party drugs. Discussion and Conclusion. Our findings suggest that the frequent use of party drugs remains a marker of HIV transmission risk among Australian GBM, despite the increased adoption of biomedical HIV prevention strategies over the past few years.

Hegemonic masculinity is defined as the ability of human beings to use masculinized characteristics and traits as a method of control and domination of those who feel vulnerable. In this research, we developed and validated an instrument that measured the perception of gay men in Puerto Rico in the face of the problem of hegemonic masculinity. As a correlative strategy we used a gender violence perceived scale in order to identify whether the perception of hegemonic masculinity responds to or is compared with the perception of gender-based violence within the gay community. The sample was composed of 271 Puerto Rican participants over the age of 21 and self-identified as gay. The hegemonic masculinity scale gets a factorial structure of two factors with sound psychometric properties. As well, our findings suggest that the selected sample recognizes that the intra-gender violence exists and rejects masculinized hegemonic behaviors., La masculinidad hegemónica se define como la capacidad que tienen los seres humanos en utilizar las características y rasgos masculinizados como método de control y dominación de quienes se sientan vulnerabilizados. Con esta investigación desarrollamos y validamos un instrumento que mide la percepción de los hombres gais de Puerto Rico ante la problemática de la masculinidad hegemónica. Como estrategia correlativa utilizamos una escala de violencia de género percibida con la finalidad de identificar si la percepción de la masculinidad hegemónica responde o se compara con la percepción de violencia de género dentro de la comunidad gay. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 271 participantes puertorriqueños mayores de 21 años y autoidentificados como gay. La escala de masculinidad hegemónica logró una estructura factorial de dos factores logrando buenas propiedades psicométricas. Además, nuestros hallazgos sugieren que la muestra seleccionada reconoce la existencia de la violencia intra-género y rechazan las conductas hegemónicas masculinizadas.

There is currently a lack of measures testing intraminority stress within gay men. Therefore, the current study sought to develop and psychometrically test the Gay-Specific Intraminority Stigma Inventory (G-SISI). Based on a content review of the literature and a panel of experts, a pool of items assessing gay men’s perceived exposure to a range of discriminatory attitudes from other gay men was generated. Utilizing a randomly split sample of 1723 gay men between the ages of 19 and 79 years, an exploratory factor analysis was first performed (n = 861). The remaining unexamined data were then used to conduct a confirmatory factor analysis (n = 862). The results support a six-factor model: (1) Age Stigma, (2) Socioeconomic Stigma, (3) Gay Non-Conformity Stigma, (4) Racial Stigma, (5) Gender Expression Stigma, and (6) Body Stigma. Cronbach’s alpha for the total scale was 0.90 and for the subscales ranged from 0.60 to 0.85. Sociodemographic factors and measures of community involvement were differentially associated with the G-SISI subscales, providing evidence of construct validity. The findings demonstrate initial support for the dimensionality and validity of the G-SISI, which targets modifiable factors (e.g., identity-based stigma) that may increase stress and reduce community coping resources among gay men with diverse identities.

Gay men consistently demonstrate higher rates of mental health dysfunction, substance misuse, and suicidal ideation than straight men (Bostwick et al., 2010; Lyons et al., 2019; McCabe et al., 2010; Meyer, 1995; 2003). Public health campaigns have proved promising in addressing mental health for men in general, but few campaigns have focused on gay men, and even fewer have addressed gay men’s mental health, usually targeting physical health instead (Lee et al., 2017; Phillips, 2022; Rochlen et al., 2006). In addition, testimonials have proven themselves as a key feature of public mental health messaging that reduces stigma and promotes positive associations with mental health care utilization (Pinfold et al., 2005), yet few studies have directly analyzed the impact of testimonials from both straight and gay men on willingness to seek mental health care. This study sought to address these gaps in knowledge. 252 gay men recruited from the research website Prolific were randomly assigned to either one of two testimonial vignettes of a fictional man’s personal experience with mental health as either a straight or a gay man, or a control group with no messaging, and completed the Mental Help Seeking Attitudes Scale (MHSAS) to measure attitudes towards seeking mental health treatment after viewing the vignettes (Hammer et al., 2018). Results indicated that knowing the sexuality of a man seeking mental health treatment had no significant impact on attitudes towards help-seeking, but reading messaging overall surrounding a man’s experience did improve attitudes towards help-seeking, compared to no messaging at all. Implications include public mental health messaging being effective in broad messaging, instead of messaging targeting an individual’s sexuality.

Introduction: This study capitalized on prospective legal change in Taiwan to capture changes in gay men’s desires and attitudes toward parenthood as a function of the legalization of same-sex marriage (SSM). Methods: A panel of 731 gay men (mean age = 26.8 years ± 5.81) completed an online survey between 2019 and 2020, shortly before and 1½ years after the legalization of SSM, to report their parenting desire, marital status, and attitudes toward parenthood and marriage. Results: This study found that fewer participants in the follow-up survey expressed a parenting desire (59.0% vs. 74.2%), and the perceived importance of parenthood dropped mildly (3.48 to 3.26, Cohen’s d = 0.269). Those who expressed a consistent parenting desire attached greater importance to SSM. The perceived importance of SSM was modestly and positively related to the perceived importance of having a child. Conclusion: Although the decrease in parenting desire and its perceived importance may be attributable to a lack of access to family-building options (e.g., surrogacy and adoption) and the COVID-19 pandemic, our findings illustrate that parenthood might become a next step for some Taiwanese male same-sex couples who married or considered marriage. Policy Implications: The study findings provide information for policymakers to gauge the possible number of sexual minority men who might want to have a child and consider resource allocation and deliberation on policy changes related to reproduction. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

New medicines can transform routines and priorities in clinical practice, but how do clinicians think and feel about these changes, and how does it affect their work? In Australia, the HIV prevention regimen pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been rapidly rolled out, transforming the sexual cultures and practices of users, but less attention has been given to the ways PrEP has reconfigured clinical practice. This paper draws on 28 qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted between 2019 and 2020 with PrEP-providing doctors and nurses in Australia to consider how they have affectively engaged with PrEP and put it into practice. Through a reflexive thematic analysis, we explore how clinicians adapted to PrEP, how the field of HIV prevention has been transformed, and how these developments have changed how clinicians approach patients. While the introduction of PrEP was initially received with uncertainty and shock, clinicians described PrEP as enjoyable to prescribe, and better aligned with the moral duties of sexual health consultations than existing HIV prevention strategies like condoms. Through approaching clinical work as an ‘affective practice’, we argue for attending not only to how new interventions change expectations and practices, but also how these changes are felt and valued by clinicians.

Despite an increase in the range of effective HIV risk reduction strategies that are available, some gay and bisexual men (GBM) do not use any of them consistently. Understanding why GBM do not always use a protective strategy may help develop more effective responses. Semi-structured interviews with 24 sexually active GBM in Sydney, Australia were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis. The main characteristics of encounters featuring little or no use of HIV risk reduction strategies were familiarity and trust with partners, pleasure and intoxication, expectations that partners were using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis or treatment as prevention, and in some cases feelings of inevitability about acquiring HIV. An increase in pleasure and a reduction in anxiety about sex were noted by some GBM who had commenced PrEP. Encouraging GBM to adopt a strategy such as PrEP and to use it consistently may be easier by emphasizing benefits to mental health and the quality of sex and intimacy it can offer. However, even with the increased availability of effective biomedical HIV risk reduction strategies, not all GBM are able to consistently manage HIV risk and some continue to hold optimistic and potentially inaccurate beliefs about sexual partners that may increase HIV risk.

The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the profiles of political involvement of 30 gay men who live in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Based on a research about their love stories in which, from a biographical approach, I asked about their political involvement, I reconstruct five profiles: activists, partners, disappointed, supporters and outsiders. The first three profiles are defined by their active militancy and permanence in it; although they differ in the temporalities in which action is expressed: the activists continue to militate; the partners have withdrawn, but they still support causes and struggles, unlike the disappointed who used to participate until they felt frustrated with politics. Meanwhile, neither the supporters nor the outsiders have ever militated, although the former ones are more interested in politics than the latter, who are not so much involved in it. As a conclusion, beyond the different profiles, there are transversal principles of politization according to the fact that these homosexuals belong to a collective of non-heterosexual identities in a polarised political situation., El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en reconstruir los perfiles de involucramiento político de 30 varones gays que viven en el Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, Argentina. A partir de una investigación acerca de sus historias amorosas en la que, desde un enfoque biográfico, se indagó sobre involucramiento político, se describen cinco perfiles: activistas, acompañantes, desencantados, simpatizantes y outsiders. Los primeros tres se definen por su activa militancia y su permanencia en ella aunque difieren las temporalidades en que se expresa la acción: los activistas continúan militando, los acompañantes se han retirado pero apoyan causas y luchas a diferencia de los desencantados, quienes militaban hasta que se desilusionaron de la política. Por su parte, ni los simpatizantes ni los outsiders han militado, aunque los primeros se interesan más por la política que los segundos, para quienes es bastante ajena. Concluyo con que, más allá de las diferencias, existen principios transversales de politización por su pertenencia a un colectivo de identidades no heterosexuales en una situación política polarizada.

What forms of intracommunity stigma do young sexual minority men narrate as they participate in communities through mobile apps? In a content analysis of 32 interviews with a racially diverse sample of young sexual minority men (ages 19-25; 84.4% non-White) from four regions of the USA, a majority of men (62.5%) spontaneously discussed mobile apps (e.g., Grindr, Scruff) when asked about their experience of community more broadly. Men's narratives revealed engagement with intracommunity stigma related to body size, race/ethnicity, gender expression, and sexual position (e.g., bottom). Stigma related to HIV status, substance use, and social class were not spontaneously narrated in response to questions about men's experience in communities. Expressions of stigma were frequently experienced intersectionally, particularly regarding racialized stereotype expectations (e.g., "Asian men are twinks, effeminate"). We discuss the ways in which sexual minority men reproduce dominant ideologies related to racism, misogyny, and masculine body ideals as they engage with one another on mobile apps. To the extent that many young men rely on mobile apps for community connection, their experiences of community might serve to exacerbate, rather than ameliorate, the deleterious impact of stigma.

Very little research has examined the psychological adjustment of gay men in mixed-orientation marriages (MOMs)–a marital union wherein one spouse is a sexual minority person (e.g. gay/lesbian, bisexual) while the other is heterosexual. Examining gay men’s psychological adjustment in MOMs provides insights into how sexual identity intersects with relationship dynamics to shape mental health in heteronormative societies. Based on survey responses from 54 Chinese gay men in MOMs who simultaneously engage in a same-sex relationship occurring outside of marriages, the current exploratory study examined the relative contributions of marital relationship quality, same-sex relationship quality, and sexual identity to their psychological adjustment (i.e. depression, life satisfaction, and loneliness). Multiple regression analyses revealed that positive sexual identity was a significantly negative predictor of depression and loneliness and a significantly positive predictor of life satisfaction. Whereas marital relationship quality was significantly and positively associated with life satisfaction and negatively associated with loneliness, same-sex relationship quality was not a significant predictor of psychological adjustment. Results indicate that both sexual identity and marital relationship quality play important roles in the mental health of gay men in MOMs. Discussion focuses on the sociocultural contexts in China that in part shape gay men’s situations in MOMs.

This study investigates whether the determinants of well-being discussed in general well-being research (which does not fully consider sexual minorities) also apply to sexual minorities, and examines the effects of marriage and social support on well-being. We used data from 2,541 men (1,851 heterosexual men and 690 homosexual men), obtained from an online survey of gay and heterosexual men living in Japan conducted by the author in 2020. A multiple regression analysis was conducted. The results of the analysis revealed that gay men had fewer significant variables that enhanced their sense of well-being than heterosexual men did, and that only the support of a significant other had a significant effect. It has been pointed out that it is difficult for sexual minorities to establish intimate relationships due to the concealment of their sexual orientation, and as a result, it is difficult for them to obtain social support. To improve this situation, support by the government and administration as well as a change in people's awareness are necessary. In particular, Japan lags behind other developed countries in the development of laws concerning sexual minorities, and urgent action is needed in this regard.

The studies focused on analysing attitudes toward homosexuality show that the manifestation of homonegativity has evolved into more modern forms. We therefore propose using instruments that capture subtle aspects in discrimination against gay and lesbian people. The objective of this study is twofold. First, we aim to adapt and validate the Portuguese version of the Modern Homonegativity Scale. Second, we set out to analyse the modern homonegativity shown by Portuguese university students. The scale includes two parallel subscales (MHS-Gay Men and MHS-Lesbian Women), each with 12 items. Six hundred and forty-one Portuguese college students between 18 and 27 years of age participated in the study (Mage = 21.23; SD = 1.88). The results demonstrate the unidimensionality of the scale and a high degree of internal consistency, along with satisfactory fit indices. Those people who identified as male and heterosexual showed greater modern homonegativity. We conclude that the Portuguese version of the MHS is valid and reliable for evaluating modern homonegativity in Portugal.

This article analyzes the representation of gay masculinities in the short stories collection Hombres de Verdad (2020), by Spanish author Alberto Marcos. The book shows the existing tensions between the traditional model of masculinity and the alternative of a masculinity based on homoaffection, intimacy and emotional expression among gay men. Consequently, even though some characters are governed by professional success, reputation, social recognition, masculine and heteronormative appearance, and sporadic sex, the alternative affective paradigm prevails. For the most part, the characters show a predilection for deeper connections in their romantic relationships and friendships, valuing being heard and understood. This way the short stories debunk the stereotype of the promiscuous gay man who only seeks sex, while also criticizing the homonormative model that aims to create a respectable homosexuality following heterosexual parameters. Marcos’s work reveals the need to include gay men in masculinity studies, as they also represent varying models of masculinity. In a similar way, it questions the traditional understanding of what it means to be a “real man” by showing how sensitivity and affection constitute an essential part of all masculinities., Este artículo analiza la representación de las masculinidades gays en el libro de relatos Hombres de verdad (2020), del escritor español Alberto Marcos. El libro manifiesta las tensiones existentes entre el modelo tradicional de masculinidad y la alternativa de una masculinidad fundada en el homoafecto, la intimidad y la expresión emocional entre hombres gays. Así, aunque hay personajes que se rigen por el éxito profesional, la reputación, el reconocimiento social, la apariencia masculina y heteronormativa, y el sexo esporádico, prevalece el paradigma alternativo afectivo. En su mayoría, los personajes muestran predilección por conexiones más profundas en sus relaciones amorosas y de amistad, valorando el ser escuchados y comprendidos. Se rompe así el estereotipo del hombre gay promiscuo que solo busca sexo, pero también se critica el modelo homonormativo que pretende crear una homosexualidad respetable siguiendo los parámetros heterosexuales. La obra de Marcos revela la necesidad de incluir a los hombres gays en los estudios de masculinidades al regirse por diversos modelos de masculinidad. Al mismo tiempo, cuestiona la concepción tradicional de lo que implica ser un «hombre de verdad» al manifestar cómo la sensibilidad y los afectos constituyen una parte imprescindible de toda masculinidad.

This paper analyzes the experiences of vulnerability and the development of resilience in trans women and gay men from Central America who transited through Mexico to the United States between 2017 and 2020. Based on interviews conducted in a shelter for LGBT+ migrants in Tijuana, it is shown that vulnerability is expressed in acts of violence and discrimination by authorities, criminal organizations, and other migrants, in response to the sexual orientation and gender identity of trans women and gay men. In contrast, resilience developed thanks to the support provided by networks of the LGBT+ community itself in the form of chosen families and civil society spaces. From this, it is observed that even within vulnerability, mobility enables the development of resilience through new ways of living gender and sexuality., En este trabajo se analizan las experiencias de vulnerabilidad y el desarrollo de resiliencia en mujeres trans y hombres gays de Centroamérica que transitaron por México hacia Estados Unidos entre 2017 y 2020. Con base en entrevistas realiza-das en un albergue para migrantes LGBT+ en Tijuana, se muestra que la vulnerabilidad se expresa en actos de violencia y discriminación por parte de autoridades, organizaciones criminales, y otros migrantes, en respuesta a la orientación sexual e identidad de género de las mujeres trans y los hombres gays. En contraparte, la resiliencia se desarrolló gracias al respaldo proporcionado por redes de la propia comunidad LGBT+ en forma de familias elegidas y espacios de la sociedad civil. A partir de eso se observa que, aún dentro de la vulnerabilidad, la movilidad posibilita el desarrollo de resiliencia a través de nuevas formas de vivir el género y la sexualidad.

We investigated whether HIV stigma has changed in recent years. We compared data on stigma settings and manifestations from 2007 (n = 667) and, specifically for health care, 2009 (n = 262), to data acquired in 2019/2020 (n = 258). Results showed reductions in stigma from friends, family, acquaintances, at work, in the financial services sector, and in media, but stigmatizing messages in media remained highly prevalent. Stigma in the LGBTQI+ community, with sexual partners, and while partying also remained prevalent and, disconcertingly, relatively unchanged. Stigma in health care increased. HIV stigma was positively related to psychological distress, and negatively related to social support and medication adherence. Further, most participants were familiar with U=U and PrEP, but 13.3% questioned the accuracy of U=U. Stigma reduction efforts should focus on reducing stigma in media, in the LGBTQI+ community and while dating, and in health care, with U=U as a key message.

The use of undetectable viral load (VL) to negotiate condomless anal intercourse (CLAI) in HIV serodiscordant male relationships has become more common as more data regarding the effectiveness of antiretroviral treatments for the prevention of HIV transmission has been described. We examined viral load agreements (VLAs) for condomless sex in the presence of an undetectable VL in 343 HIV serodiscordant male couples in Australia, Brazil and Thailand. Factors associated with having a VLA included having agreements for the HIV-positive partner to report his VL result (p < 0.001), agreeing that VL affects agreements about sexual practice (p < 0.001), the HIV-negative partner’s perception of his partner’s undetectable VL (p < 0.001), the couple’s belief in the efficacy of undetectable VL in preventing HIV transmission (p < 0.001), and the couple engaging in CLAI with each other (p < 0.001). Over time, these agreements became more common although 49.3% of couples in the sample never had a viral load agreement. As these agreements become more common, further education is required to support male couples in using them safely.

Two studies were conducted. In study 1, 930 profiles were collected and analyzed to gain a quantitative understanding about how Chinese gay men utilize both photographic and textual elements to present themselves on Blued. To further investigate how and why Chinese gay men present themselves visually and textually in certain ways, 30 Blued users were interviewed in study 2. According to the findings of study 1, only about a third of Chinese gay men's profiles contained at least a recognizable face photo in their Blued profiles. Correlations between demographics and face disclosure were test. Older gay men are less likely to disclose a face photo on Blued than younger gay men. Frequencies and percentage of masculinity, body and sport language were counted, and correlations between demographics and different types of language use were test. The percentage of masculinity, body and sport language used in Blued profiles are 37.6%, 20.9% and 6.2% respectively. Age, height and weight was found to be correlated with different types of language use. People who like using masculinity language are more likely to use body and sport language. The results of Study 2 shows that Chinese gay men have five major motives of constructing a Blued profile: looking for casual sex, looking for romantic/long term relationships, looking for friends, entertainment and seeking phycological comfort. Chinese gay men use a series of strategies to construct their profiles: paying attention to small cues, balancing authenticity and deception, establishing credibility, and bypassing technological constraints. Chinese gay men have different reasons for not disclosing a face photo in their Blued profiles. Worrying about exposing gay identity is the most frequently reported reason. Through the development and implementation of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the characteristics of PrEP users have been configured in a range of ways. Drawing on the concept of ‘imaginaries’, we consider how clinicians imagine PrEP users and related communities. We conducted 28 semi-structured interviews in 2019–2020 with PrEP-providing clinicians based in New South Wales and Western Australia. Participants included general practitioners, sexual health nurses and sexual health doctors. We inductively developed three themes through a reflexive thematic analysis: ‘PrEP users as 99% gay men/MSM’, ‘The informed and connected PrEP user’, and ‘Condom users in the PrEP era’. Participants imagined PrEP users primarily as gay men, and so we focused on how gay community was imagined in relation to PrEP users. Users were imagined as supporting one another to use PrEP effectively, but some were imagined as threatening norms of condom use amongst gay community. Analysing clinician imaginaries of PrEP users reveals insight into how clinicians speculate about and engage with changing community norms related to condom use and accessing PrEP. These imaginaries reveal ongoing tensions about who is believed to be best suited to PrEP, and PrEP’s impact on norms of conduct in imagined biosocial communities like gay men.

Few studies have examined changes in sexual behaviour following HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in relationships. In a national, online, prospective study of GBM in Australia, we compared sexual behaviours prior to and after PrEP initiation among HIV-negative and unknown-HIV-status men (recruited 2014-2017) not taking PrEP at baseline and who completed at least one six-monthly follow-up by July 2018. Among men in relationships who did not initiate PrEP (n = 339), we compared their most recent survey to their prior one, while among men in relationships who initiated PrEP (n = 81), we compared follow-ups before and after PrEP initiation. Among the 81 PrEP-initiators who were in a relationship both before and after initiation, the proportion reporting their regular partner was on PrEP increased from 8.3 to 44.4% (p < 0.001) and the proportion reporting receptive CLAIC increased from 27.2 to 44.4% (p = 0.009). Overall, men who initiated PrEP were more likely to be in a relationship with a partner on PrEP, and it appeared they started PrEP around the same time. Receptive CLAIC also became more common.

In this study, we draw on sexual field theory to examine the structural nature of metropolitan Chinese gay men’s mobile dating practices in a polymedia environment where one can access an array of dating apps. We define structures of desire in the sexual field as not only the transpersonal valuations of desirability but also the dominance of particular desires that coordinate actors’ expectations and practices. Based on interviews with 52 urban Chinese gay men, we discuss the differing structures of desire hosted by four dating apps: Aloha, Blued, Grindr, and Tinder. Our analysis indicates that factors such as design features of dating apps, marketing strategies of app companies, and internet regulations have shaped the structures of desire by unevenly distributing the platform access to users across social classes and territorial divisions and (dis)enabling particular communicative practices in collective sexual life to different extents. The distance-sorted display of nearby users contributes to the predominance of immediate hook-ups on Blued and Grindr, while the matching mechanism of Aloha and Tinder functions as a “speed bump” and nourishes users’ expectations for lasting connections. As Blued is the most popular gay dating app on the heavily guarded Chinese internet market, the diversity of its users drives away many metropolitan middle-class gay men who only desire their own kind. In comparison, Aloha, Grindr, and Tinder, with smaller user bases, are more specialized sexual sites where the dominant currency of sexual capital reflects the form of the middle-class standard for “quality.”

This study aims to explore the lived experiences of Swedish Muslim gay men of Somali origin in Stockholm Sweden. A group that has not been specifically researched in the previous study within the Swedish context. The study demonstrates how various identities such as ethnicity, sexuality, religion and citizenship intersect with each other. The thesis highlights how these identities are negotiated and managed with family and relatives, in white spaces and gay scenes. Intersectionality is utilized as a theoretical framework which pays attention to the ways of which all forms of discrimination overlap and create a unique and distinct kind of oppression for a group of people. The specific approach is taken in this thesis is group-centred and intra-categorical complexity which aim to give voice to voiceless people, to highlight their unique experiences to better understand inequality. A qualitative research methodology is adopted involving individual interviews with nine men. Given the intersecting identities of the participants who are Swedish, Somali, Muslim and gay men appear to have three dimensions such as religious, ethno-cultural and colour, integrated with a gay identity. First, this group of men do not disclose their sexuality with their family or relatives. Second, the findings of this research demonstrate that Swedish Muslim gay men of Somali origin face oppression from people with whom they share race, ethnicity and religious backgrounds because of their sexuality. Third, the group are discriminated against in the labour market because of their ethnicity and religion. Finally, the group experience oppression and racism from the gay scenes about their race and ethnicity. This research shows that race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality and citizenship are not separate identities but build on each other and work together.

This study examines the potential health-related impact of recent versus lifetime experiences of sexual orientation discrimination among older Australian lesbian women and gay men. In a nationwide survey, a sample of 243 lesbian women and 513 gay men aged 60 years and over reported on their experiences of sexual orientation discrimination and their mental and physical health, including psychological distress, positive mental health and self-rated health. Among both lesbian women and gay men, recent discrimination uniquely predicted lower positive mental health after adjusting for experiences of discrimination across the lifetime and socio-demographic variables. In addition, recent discrimination uniquely predicted higher psychological distress among gay men. Experiences of discrimination over the lifetime further predicted higher psychological distress and poorer self-rated health among gay men after adjusting for recent experiences of discrimination and socio-demographic variables. However, there were no associations between lifetime discrimination and any of the outcome variables among lesbian women. Overall, recent and lifetime experiences of sexual orientation discrimination were related to mental and physical health in different ways, especially among the men. These findings have potential implications for policy/practice, and suggest that distinguishing between recent and lifetime experiences of discrimination may be useful when assessing potential health-related impacts of sexual orientation discrimination among older lesbian women and gay men, while also taking account of differences between these two groups.

This study explores the experiences of gay men in New Zealand who self-identify as perfectionists. The research had three aims: to explore how perfectionism is experienced throughout participants’ day-to-day lives, to understand how participants perceived their perfectionism to develop and change over time, and to investigate the self-perceived effects of perfectionism on participants’ relationships. Recruitment of participants was conducted with the support and assistance of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer plus (LGBTQ+) organisations using the snowballing method. Six individuals who identified as male, gay and perfectionistic participated in semi-structured interviews. The data was analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, with participants’ voices located centrally throughout the research. Participants’ accounts were integrated to form three overarching themes: Contributions to Perfectionism, Living with Perfectionism and Journey towards (Im)perfection. It was found that most participants viewed their sexual orientation as contributing to the development of perfectionism, as they sought to compensate for not fulfilling heteronormative standards. Further, participants reported that their perfectionism changed over their lifetime, shifting from being central to their identity to simply being a part of who they are. Participants also reiterated sub-themes related to both positive and negative effects of perfectionism, as well as increased acceptance of their perfectionism over time that mirrored their self-acceptance. These findings challenge current understandings of perfectionism through the inclusion of wider societal and cultural impositions in the development of perfectionism. Further, the way in which participants reported that perfectionism has shifted for them over their lifetimes provides a unique understanding of perfectionism as being potentially changeable in nature.

The prevailing research perspectives surrounding the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among men who have sex with men (MSM) revolve around public health aspects, offering less insights into the lived experiences of those who use it. This project aimed to expand this perspective and examine the experiences of PrEP users in Aotearoa New Zealand by contextualising them in the local social and cultural backgrounds. Ten individuals (nine men and one non-binary person) who identified as gay were interviewed individually, each on two separate occasions. A method of interviewing that followed the interpretive Gadamerian hermeneutical approach was used to elicit the deeper meanings of PrEP for its users. The theoretical lens of analysis included Bourdieu’s habitus theory and informed understanding of PrEP use and sexual behaviours as social practices. During the interviews, participants shared how their connection with the gay community gave them an informed and empowered status as they actively sought PrEP access. Participants pointed to pervasive heteronormativity in healthcare as a source of difficulties, and they reflected on their methods to challenge it. Many participants demonstrated resilience and were active advocates for themselves and their communities. PrEP was not only seen as one of the methods of HIV prevention, but primarily as an agent of personal and sexual liberation. PrEP also served as an enabler of what was seen as safe condomless sex as a carrier of new or recovered symbolic meanings signifying intimacy, connection, and ecstasy, as contrasted with fear and contagion. Condomless sex constituted an important part of the gay habitus that entailed subversive notions of social resistance contradicting the homonormative ideas of mainstream social acceptability. The use of PrEP enabled interrogation of moralised HIV prevention discourses, where condom use served as proxy for homonormative judgments. Differences were noted in ways participants were recon
