Research was conducted to infections of a (PB1-) potato crop grown from minitubers with blackleg causing soft rot Pectobacteriaceae (BL-SRP). For this, an enrichment multiplex TaqMan assay (EM-TaqMan assay) was developed, allowing to detect the various BL-SRP variants simultaneously with a sensitivity of 10-100 cells per gram plant material. During four growing seasons (2019- 2022) PB1 crops were surveyed. Plant tissues (leaves, stems and tubers) were collected and analyzed using the EM-TaqMan assay. During wet growing seasons relatively high infection incidences were found both in leaves (8%) and tubers (≤ 42%), in particular with a virulent haplotype of P. brasiliense. During dry seasons, only low incidences were found. It was found that P. brasiliense is able to enter a VBNC-state in the presence of cupper ions (CuSO4). However, we were unable to find conditions to let the cells multiply again. Therefore we have no indications that VBNC play a role in the epidemiology of P. brasiliense. The role of potential infection sources was studied. BL-SRP were not found in rain water, but 2.3% of the sampled insects at a PB crop were contaminated with BL-SRP, indicating that insects may be important in the transmission of BL-SRP from an infection source to a PB1 crop. Inoculum deposited on haulms poses a high risk for tuber infections. This was studied by spray inoculation of haulms of young potato plants with different densities (102 – 109 cfu per plant) of a virulent, rifampicin resistant mutant of P. brasiliense. In a wet growing season, low densities could already result in haulm infections while all plants yielded infected tubers. In a dry year only at the highest inoculum densities haulm infections were found, but tuber infections even at the lowest densities. Groundwater discharge into the sea occurs along many coastlines around the world in different geological settings and constitutes an important component of global water and matter budget. Estimates of how much water flows into the sea worldwide vary widely and are largely based on onshore studies and hydrological or hydrogeological modeling. In this study, we propose an approach to quantify a deep submarine groundwater outflow from the seafloor by using autonomously measured ocean surface data, i.e., 222Rn as groundwater tracer, in combination with numerical modeling of plume transport. The model and field data suggest that groundwater outflows from a water depth of ∼100 m can reach the sea surface implying that several cubic meters per second of freshwater are discharged into the sea. We postulate an extreme rainfall event 6 months earlier as the likely trigger for the groundwater discharge. This study shows that measurements at the sea surface, which are much easier to conduct than discharge measurements at the seafloor, can be used not only to localize submarine groundwater discharges but, in combination with plume modeling, also to estimate the magnitude of the release flow rate.

Carbon capture and storage is a key mitigation strategy proposed for keeping the global temperature rise below 1.5 °C. Offshore storage can provide up to 13% of the global CO2 reduction required to achieve the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change goals. The public must be assured that potential leakages from storage reservoirs can be detected and that therefore the CO2 is safely contained. We conducted a controlled release of 675 kg CO2 within sediments at 120 m water depth, to simulate a leak and test novel detection, quantification and attribution approaches. We show that even at a very low release rate (6 kg day−1), CO2 can be detected within sediments and in the water column. Alongside detection we show the fluxes of both dissolved and gaseous CO2 can be quantified. The CO2 source was verified using natural and added tracers. The experiment demonstrates that existing technologies and techniques can detect, attribute and quantify any escape of CO2 from sub-seabed reservoirs as required for public assurance, regulatory oversight and emissions trading schemes.

Yet, potential leakage, migration and dissolution of externally-supplied CO2 from such reservoirs are a cause for concern. The potential impact of CO2 leakage on the biogeochemistry of sediments and overlying waters in the North Sea was studied during a controlled subsurface CO2 release experiment in 2019 at a potential carbon capture and storage site (Goldeneye). This study describes the natural (unperturbed) biogeochemistry of sediments. They are classified as muddy sand to sandy mud with low organic carbon content (∼0.6 %). Distributions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) in sediment porewaters are reported in addition to in situ benthic fluxes of dissolved nutrients and oxygen between the sediments and the overlying water. Oxygen fluxes into the sediment, measured using benthic chambers and eddy covariance, were 6.18 ± 0.58 and 5.73 ± 2.03 mmol m−2 d-1, respectively. Diagnostic indicators are discussed that could be used to detect CO2 enrichment of sediments due to reservoir leakage at CCS sites. These include the ratio TA and ammonium to sulfate in sediment porewaters, benthic fluxes and chloride-normalized cation distributions. These indicators currently suggest that the organic carbon at Goldeneye has an oxidation state below zero and is mainly degraded via sulfate reduction. Carbonate precipitation is apparently negligible, whereas decreases in Mg2+ and K+ point toward ongoing alteration of lithogenic sediments by reverse weathering processes.

The present work illustrates that the uni- versal spectral and spatial statistical properties of chaotic RCs allow to meet more adequately the criteria required by the Standard IEC 61000-4-21 to perform tests of electro- magnetic compatibility.

During the first hours after release of petroleum at sea, crude oil hydrocarbons partition rapidly into air and water. However, limited information is available about very early evaporation and dissolution processes. We report on the composition of the oil slick during the first day after a permitted, unrestrained 4.3 m3 oil release conducted on the North Sea. Rapid mass transfers of volatile and soluble hydrocarbons were observed, with >50% of =C17 hydrocarbons disappearing within 25 h from this oil slick of <10 km2 area and <10 µm thickness. For oil sheen, >50% losses of =C16 hydrocarbons were observed after 1 h. We developed a mass transfer model to describe the evolution of oil slick chemical composition and water column hydrocarbon concentrations. The model was parametrized based on environmental conditions and hydrocarbon partitioning properties estimated from comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) retention data. The model correctly predicted the observed fractionation of petroleum hydrocarbons in the oil slick resulting from evaporation and dissolution. This is the first report on the broad-spectrum compositional changes in oil during the first day of a spill at the sea surface. Expected outcomes under other environmental conditions are discussed, as well as comparisons to other models.

Automatic face recognition in unconstrained environments is a challenging task. To test current trends in face recognition algorithms, we organized an evaluation on face recognition in mobile environment. This paper presents the results of 8 different participants using two verification metrics. Most submitted algorithms rely on one or more of three types of features: local binary patterns, Gabor wavelet responses including Gabor phases, and color information. The best results are obtained from UNILJ-ALP, which fused several image representations and feature types, and UC-HU, which learns optimal features with a convolutional neural network. Additionally, we assess the usability of the algorithms in mobile devices with limited resources. © 2013 IEEE.

Purpose: To evaluate exfoliative glaucoma (XFG) patients over 5 years, determining risk factors associated with progression or non-progression of glaucoma. Methods: A retrospective, observational study. Patients were chosen from consecutive charts and data collected from each available visit included in the follow-up period. Data were abstracted for non-progressed XFG patients for 5 years and for progressed patients until glaucoma worsened. Progression was determined from patient records and by disc photographs. Results: There were 71 (53%) progressed and 63 (47%) non-progressed XFG patients.Baseline parameters demonstrated worse visual field damage (p = 0.014) and more prescribed medicines (p = 0.03) in progressed patients. The mean intraocular pressure (IOP) for progressed patients was 18.7 ± 4.3 and 17.3 ± 3.4 mm Hg for non-progressed patients (p = 0.047). The mean IOP that best separated the groups was 17 mm Hg with 60% staying non-progressed at or below this level and 30% above this level. At the last visit, progressed patients had more medicines prescribed (1.7) than non-progressed patients (1.3, p = 0.005). A multivariate regression analysis showed higher mean, peak and variance of IOP, number of glaucoma medications at the final visit and presence of a disc hemorrhage (n = 5) as independent risk factors for progression (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: IOP reduction in XFG may be essential in reducing disease progression. The presence of disc hemorrhage in XFG may suggest an increased probability of progression despite treatment to within the normal IOP range. © 2011 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Initial screening of 14 Solanum dulcamara accessions enabled the identification of individuals resistant and susceptible to Phytophthora infestans. Crosses between contrasting genotypes resulted in three F2–BC1 populations segregating for resistance to late blight in a laboratory assay and under field conditions. Genetic profiling of one of these populations using 128 AFLP primers generated three markers linked to the resistant phenotype. Blast analysis of the sequenced markers resulted in a plausible gene position on the distal end of the long arm of chromosome 9 that could be confirmed by CAPS markers. Thus, we describe a first resistant gene, named Rpi-dlc1, from S. dulcamara, a Solanum species native to Europe. In addition, one population was tested for broadness of resistance responses using a set of seven additional P. infestans isolates, varying in virulence. This indicated the possible presence of additional Rpi genes.

Several different interest groups are involved in the siting decision process for nuclear power plants. Their inputs and how the final decision affects them are usually not explicitly included in mathematical analyses. Paretian analysis is a technique which attempts to identify the preferences of each of the interest groups involved in the decision-making process, and to illuminate the trade-offs among these groups. The specific problem studied is the deployment by a regional power plant siting agency of nuclear base-load power plants to coastal sites in New England. Four interest groups participate in power plant siting decisions; utility functions can represent their preferences. Techniques to find Pareto-admissible decisions are described.

A new sonar bearings-only solution method, research achieved substantial reduction in range errors on a zigging target, one-sixth those of the usual (unweighted) CHURN method. The method yields time-corrected range (value at time when expected error is least) and weights observations according to assumed zig statistics. It also advocates extrapolating favorably-chosen time-corrected ranges to obtain present range. It was found that the CHURN, with weights equivalent to those used in the research achieves equally small time- corrected range errors, and errors at solution time one-third those of the usual CHURN. Random bearing noise, however, seriously degrades solutions using these weights, even without zigs, in which case the unweighted CHURN is optimum. For combinations of zigs and bearing noise, optimum combined weighting functions exist. Unsuccessful attempts were made to use data available to the tracking ship, e.g. autocorrelation of solution residuals, for selecting optimum weighting. Autocorrelation was also probed for zig detection clues without success. Results obtained by extrapolating pairs of time-corrected range to present time were about equally as good as from single solutions using the same data. It is concluded that the important contribution of the research is to show the effectiveness of appropriate statistical weighting.
