This work describes the mechanisms of photothermal conversion and related concepts, avoiding, as far as possible, technicalities and advanced mathematical language to make it accessible to students and professionals from diverse fields and not only to people related to science and engineering. Some of most critical applications in the field of photothermal conversion are discussed. However, the article is focused on the use of solar energy. Initially, some basic concepts are presented that are necessary to achieve a more precise description of the main topic, which is discussed in the final part of the article: the photothermal conversion mechanisms and their application in solar thermal energy. We consider this a topic of growing interest in the field of renewable energies that, due to its current relevance, is pertinent to widely disseminate and promote its understanding among students and professionals interested in knowing about this important field of knowledge., Este trabajo describe los mecanismos de conversión fototérmica y conceptos relacionados evitando, en lo posible, tecnicismos y un lenguaje matemático avanzado para hacerlo accesible a estudiantes y profesionales de campos diversos y no solo a personas relacionadas con la ciencia y la ingeniería. Se comentan algunas de las más importantes aplicaciones del campo de la conversión fototérmica, sin embargo, el artículo está enfocado hacia la del aprovechamiento de la energía solar. Inicialmente se presentan algunos conceptos básicos que son necesarios para lograr una descripción más clara del tema principal, que se trata en la parte final del artículo, los mecanismos de conversión fototérmica y su aplicación en el campo de la energía solar térmica. Consideramos que este es un tema de interés creciente en el campo de las energías renovables que, por su actual relevancia, es pertinente dar una amplia divulgación y fomentar su comprensión en estudiantes y profesionales interesados en conocer sobre este importante campo del conocimiento.

Biocompatible three-dimensional porous scaffolds are widely used in multiple biomedical applications. However, the fabrication of tailor-made 3D structures with controlled and combined multiscale macroscopic-microscopic, surface and inner porosities in a straightforward manner is still a current challenge. Herein, we use multimaterial fused deposition modeling (FDM) to generate poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) sacrificial moulds filled with poly (Ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) to generate well defined PCL 3D objects. Further on, the supercritical CO (SCCO) technique, as well as the breath figures mechanism (BFs), were additionally employed to fabricate specific porous structures at the core and surfaces of the 3D PCL object, respectively. The biocompatibility of the resulting multiporous 3D structures was tested in vitro and in vivo, and the versatility of the approach was assessed by generating a vertebra model fully tunable at multiple pore size levels. In sum, the combinatorial strategy to generate porous scaffolds offers unique possibilities to fabricate intricate structures by combining the advantages of additive manufacturing (AM), which provides flexibility and versatility to generate large sized 3D structures, with advantages of the SCCO and BFs techniques, which allow to finely tune the macro and micro porosity at material surface and material core levels.

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is a second-generation continuously operated, wide field-of-view, TeV gamma-ray observatory. The HAWC observatory and its analysis techniques build on experience of the Milagro experiment in using ground-based water Cherenkov detectors for gamma-ray astronomy. HAWC is located on the Sierra Negra volcano in M\'exico at an elevation of 4100 meters above sea level. The completed HAWC observatory principal detector (HAWC) consists of 300 closely spaced water Cherenkov detectors, each equipped with four photomultiplier tubes to provide timing and charge information to reconstruct the extensive air shower energy and arrival direction. The HAWC observatory has been optimized to observe transient and steady emission from sources of gamma rays within an energy range from several hundred GeV to several hundred TeV. However, most of the air showers detected are initiated by cosmic rays, allowing studies of cosmic rays also to be performed. BACKGROUND: Testosterone is the standard treatment for male hypogonadism, but there is uncertainty about its cardiovascular safety due to inconsistent findings. We aimed to provide the most extensive individual participant dataset (IPD) of testosterone trials available, to analyse subtypes of all cardiovascular events observed during treatment, and to investigate the effect of incorporating data from trials that did not provide IPD. METHODS: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials including IPD. We searched MEDLINE, MEDLINE In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations, MEDLINE Epub Ahead of Print, Embase, Science Citation Index, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Database of Abstracts of Review of Effects for literature from 1992 onwards (date of search, Aug 27, 2018). The following inclusion criteria were applied: (1) men aged 18 years and older with a screening testosterone concentration of 12 nmol/L (350 ng/dL) or less; (2) the intervention of interest was treatment with any testosterone formulation, dose frequency, and route of administration, for a minimum duration of 3 months; (3) a comparator of placebo treatment; and (4) studies assessing the pre-specified primary or secondary outcomes of interest. Details of study design, interventions, participants, and outcome measures were extracted from published articles and anonymised IPD was requested from investigators of all identified trials. Primary outcomes were mortality, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular events at any time during follow-up. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. We did a one-stage meta-analysis using IPD, and a two-stage meta-analysis integrating IPD with data from studies not providing IPD. The study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42018111005. This paper presents a multivariate classification of the global wave climate into types driven by atmospheric circulation patterns. The primary source of the net long-term variability is evaluated based on historical wave simulations. Results show that the monsoon, extratropical, subtropical, and polar wave climate types of the Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans are dominated by natural variability, whereas the extratropical and subtropical wave climate types in the Indian Ocean, and the tropical wave climate types of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans exhibit a global warming signal. In the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, strong natural variability may mask a global warming signal that is yet to emerge as being statistically significant. In addition, wave climate teleconnections were found across the world that can provide a framework for joint strategies to achieve the goals of climate adaption for resilient coastal communities and environments.

Postharvest quality, quantification of betalains, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity of peel, pulp, and juice of fruits of three prickly pears (Opuntia ficus-indica L. Mill.) cultivars of Colegio de Postgraduados in México, were measured. The red and orange cultivars showed outstanding features of postharvest quality (size, texture, TSS and pulp and juice content) highest content of betalains and phenolic compounds. Therefore, highest antioxidant activity. In general, the highest content of bioactive compounds was detected in the peel, besides the content in pulp and juice did not show statistically significant differences. Phenolic content is very high in comparison with other fruits. Antioxidant activity was measured by three assays:FRAP, ABTS, and DPPH. Three cultivars showed a high correlation between antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds. The methodologies used in this work are a very useful tool for the quantification of bioactive compounds in O. ficus-indica fruit tissues.

The heterogeneous class of what we nowadays call antipsychotics was born almost 70 years ago with the serendipitous discovery of chlorpromazine. Their utilization is constantly growing because they are used to treat a diverse group of diseases and patients across all age groups: schizophrenia, bipolar disease, depression, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, behavioural and psychological symptoms in dementia, among others. They possess a complex pharmacological profile, acting on multiple receptors: dopaminergic, serotoninergic, histaminergic, adrenergic, and cholinergic, leading scientists to call them “agents with rich pharmacology” or “dirty drugs”. Serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine, noradrenaline, histamine and their respective receptors are evolutionary ancient compounds, and as such, are found in many different living beings in the environment. Antipsychotics do not disappear once excreted by patient's urine or faeces and are transported to wastewater treatment plants. But as these plant's technology is not designed to eliminate drugs and their metabolites, a variable proportion of the administered dose ends up in the environment, where they have been found in almost every matrix: municipal wastewater, hospital sewage, rivers, lakes, sea and even drinking water. We believe that reported concentrations found in the environment might be high enough to exert significant effect to aquatic wildlife. Besides, recent studies suggest antipsychotics, among others, are very likely bioaccumulating through the web food. Crucially, psychotropics may provoke behavioural changes affecting populations' dynamics at lower concentrations. We believe that so far, antipsychotics have not received the attention they deserve with regards to drug pollution, and that their role as environmental pollutants has been underrated.

Monosaccharide analogs of the sp2-minosugar family offer unprecedented opportunities to access enzymatically and chemically stable glycoconjugate mimetics amenable to drug discovery programs. In this context, the 1-dodecylsulfonyl-5N,6O-oxomethylidenenojirimycin (DSO2-ONJ) (Figure 1), a sp2-iminoglycolipid (IGL) representative, has shown outstandinganti-inflammatory activity in microglia, reducing gliosis in diabetic db/db mice.1DSO2-ONJ further inhibited the activation of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DCs) by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro and in vivo in amouse model of acute inflammation.2Biochemical studies and computational docking experiments endorsed a mechanism of action that implies attachment to the allosteric lipid binding pocket of p38-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), a key protein in the regulation of the innate immuneresponse. This binding mode has also been demonstrated with sp2-IGLs incorporating at the pseudoanomeric position different polyfluoroalkyl segments of varied lengths that facilitate passage through cell membranes. This modification resulted in a 10-fold higher effectiveness at eliciting p38 (Figure 1).3 In this communication we will present the synthesis of differentfluorinated sp2-IGLs and their biological evaluation in the context of three pathologiesthat share common signaling pathways: cancer, Leishmania infection and inflammation.

En el Partido de General Pueyrredon existen empresas que se destacan por sus acciones de responsabilidad social, conformando un objeto de análisis relevante desde el punto de vista de la contabilidad social y ambiental debido a su impacto positivo en la comunidad. Por ello, mediante este proyecto se propuso relevar las políticas de responsabilidad social asumidas por dichas empresas, analizar el impacto en sus destinatarios y proponer sistemas de información contable que reflejen estas políticas y satisfagan las necesidades de los usuarios interesados. Se parte del hecho de que los usuarios del sistema contable asignan cada vez mayor relevancia a la información referida al desempeño social, ético y medioambiental de las empresas. En este sentido, las investigaciones que desde la disciplina contable y afines abordan esta temática, realizan aportes valiosos para el ejercicio de la profesión, y adicionalmente, permiten que las empresas que asumen una actitud responsable frente a diferentes problemáticas sociales puedan adecuar los informes de sus sistemas contables y dar cuenta de sus acciones a múltiples usuarios. Metodológicamente proponemos triangular nuestro objeto de investigación en base a un nutrido cuerpo teórico, información primaria relevada a través de entrevistas en profundidad e información secundaria proporcionada por las empresas seleccionadas para el estudio. Elevated blood pressure remains the single biggest risk factor contributing to the global burden of disease and mortality. May Measurement Month is an annual global screening campaign aiming to improve awareness of blood pressure at the individual and population level. Adults (≥18 years) recruited through opportunistic sampling were screened at sites in 92 countries during May 2019. Ideally, 3 blood pressure readings were measured for each participant, and data on lifestyle factors and comorbidities were collected. Hypertension was defined as a systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg, or a diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg (mean of the second and third readings) or taking antihypertensive medication. When necessary, multiple imputation was used to estimate participants' mean blood pressure. Mixed-effects models were used to evaluate associations between blood pressure and participant characteristics. Of 1 508 130 screenees 482 273 (32.0%) had never had a blood pressure measurement before and 513 337 (34.0%) had hypertension, of whom 58.7% were aware, and 54.7% were on antihypertensive medication. Of those on medication, 57.8% were controlled to <140/90 mm Hg, and 28.9% to <130/80 mm Hg. Of all those with hypertension, 31.7% were controlled to <140/90 mm Hg, and 350 825 (23.3%) participants had untreated or inadequately treated hypertension. Of those taking antihypertensive medication, half were taking only a single drug, and 25% reported using aspirin inappropriately. This survey is the largest ever synchronized and standardized contemporary compilation of global blood pressure data. This campaign is needed as a temporary substitute for systematic blood pressure screening in many countries worldwide.

This study was conducted in response to the need to integrate the existing methods for assessing urban deprivation in European cities and introduce in such analyses the fuel poverty-related factors that induce it. Poor residential building thermal quality in the least advantaged neighbourhoods is a significant vector in inhabitant vulnerability. As this cross-cutting, complex problem must be broached comprehensively and on an urban scale, a methodology is proposed that would include a multidimensional fuel poverty index for application to deprived neighbourhoods. The method is illustrated with a case study for the city of Madrid, Spain. Data published by the country’s Urban Deprivation Observatory were cross-referenced with those from earlier studies to quantify fuel poverty and determine its spatial distribution. In future the findings will be related to basic indicators to formulate the nationwide list of deprived neighbourhoods and to the results of other fuel poverty-specific methodologies, from building energy inefficiency to those addressing causes and consequences. In addition to including the specifics of fuel poverty in urban deprivation analysis, the findings suggest that data from the observatories participating in the Urban Poverty Partnership might be cross-referenced with those of the EU’s Energy Poverty Observatory (EPOV).

In order to discover the effect of government influence, cases of ESLE practices in countries with different levels of government involvement were compared. The Netherlands was chosen as a country with a low level of government involvement and Ireland was chosen as a country with a high level of government involvement. An insight into the ESLE practices and levels of government influence was provided by conducting semi-structured interviews with principals and teachers from ESLE schools in Ireland and the Netherlands. The current study confirmed findings from previous research that Irish ESLE has a high level of government involvement (Ó Laoire, 2008) and the Netherlands has a low level of government involvement (Unsworth, Persson, Prins & De Bot, 2014). The findings of this study suggest a link between a high level of government involvement and unity in ESLE practices. This study suggests that a government should be involved in developing guidelines and creating unity in ESLE practices and with that create equal opportunities for students.

El pegante se realizó con almidón nativo de yuca (Manihot sculenta Crantz) variedad M-Tai y se usó hidróxido de sodio como agente hidrolizante. En la elaboración del pegante se evaluaron cinco soluciones de almidón nativo de yuca (10, 20, 30, 40 y 50% p/v) y cuatro concentraciones de NaOH (0, 0.66, 1.33 y 2 % p/p). Los resultados indicaron que las uniones papel-papel, cartón-cartón y papel- vidrio, realizadas con los pegantes hechos con 40 %-2 %, 40 %-0 % y 50 %-0 % p/v-p/p de almidón de yuca y NaOH, respectivamente, presentaron mayor fuerza de adhesión. Las uniones papel-papel, cartón-cartón y papel-vidrio que mostraron mayor fuerza de fricción, como un indicativo de mayor durabilidad del pegamento, fueron los pegantes realizados con 50 %-2 %, 50 %-1.33 % y 50 %-2 % p/v-p/p de almidón y NaOH, respectivamente. El pegante a base de almidón de yuca no presentó diferencias significativas (p < 0.05) con tres adhesivos comerciales (Colbocol, Supertack y Pegajoso), teniendo mejor adhesividad y durabilidad en las uniones hechas con los sustratos papel-papel y papel-vidrio.
