- Abstract
We have investigated the generation region of intermittent plasma structures, which could be due to the blob-like cross field transport around the divertor simulation experimental module (D-module) in the tandem mirror device GAMMA 10/PDX. A positive skewness of the ion saturation current was clearly seen when the electrode of the movable probe was located at the radial edge and just in front of the entrance limiter of the D-module. Fourier analysis and conditional averaging clarified that positive spikes intermittently appeared in the same region. This is the first indication that the phenomenon producing the high-density isolated plasma structures occurred in the upstream of the D-module. A negative skewness was also found, and large amplitude fluctuation was detected between regions showing positive and negative skewness. Furthermore, this and light emission fluctuations become stronger during the transient state from attached to detached state on the V-shaped target.

- Abstract
We have performed 115In-NMR spectroscopy for Ni2InSbO6 with corundum-related crystal structure to reveal magnetic structures that develop in high magnetic fields. At low fields Ni2InSbO6 shows a helical magnetic order with a long wavelength because of its chiral and polar crystal structure. The field-induced magnetic state was not investigated by microscopic experiment, because an extremely high magnetic field is required to modify the antiferromagnetically coupled helical structure. From the analysis of our 115In-NMR spectra obtained at high magnetic fields, we confirm that the canted antiferromagnetic structure appears in fields applied in the [110] direction, and the propagation vector of magnetic helix is rotated toward the field direction for fields in the [001] direction. We discuss the effect of a magnetic field that modifies the magnetic structure of an antiferromagnetic chiral magnet.

- Abstract
A divertor simulation experimental module (D-module) in the tandem mirror GAMMA 10/PDX was used for the study of plasma detachment. In previous studies, it was difficult to measure far-upstream plasma parameters in the D-module, and only electrostatic probes on the target plate were used to perform electron temperature and density measurements. To study the detached plasma structure, a Thomson scattering (TS) system and a microwave interferometer system have been installed to measure the inside plasma parameters of the D-module, and a movable electrostatic probe has been placed at the inlet of the D-module to measure the inlet plasma density and temperature. The TS system in the central cell observed the electron temperature and density of the core plasma simultaneously. These measurements revealed the entire density and temperature structure from the core plasma to the divertor plate. The line average electron density measured by the microwave interferometer showed a rollover behavior during detachment. The results indicated that the ionization region was located around the center of the D-module, and it appears to move upstream along the axis.

- Abstract
We present a Cl-35 NMR study for the spin S = 1/2 perfect kagome antiferromagnet Ca-kapellasite [CaCu3(OH)(6)Cl-2 center dot 0.6H(2)O] with a magnetic transition at T* = 7.2 K. The static magnetic structure in the ground state has been determined to be a chirality-ordered Q = 0 state, which is selected by a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The low-energy magnetic excitations in the ordered state are investigated by a nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate measurement. We detect a weakly temperature-dependent contribution in the magnetic fluctuations perpendicular to the kagome plane in addition to the dispersive spin-wave contribution in the kagome plane. The low-energy magnetic excitations from the coplanar spin structure are attributed to the zero mode originating from the flat band in this kagome antiferromagnet.

- Abstract
The number of samples is a major issue when estimating the mean herbage mass of grazed paddocks. The aim of this study was to assess the number of samples required for accurate visual estimation of mean herbage mass in relation to the herbage mass heterogeneity and size of paddocks. Data were collected across scales of space and time (273 sampling events) from paddocks on Campos grasslands in Uruguay, using the visual estimation technique. The mean herbage mass of the paddocks ranged from 270 to 6350 kg of dry matter (DM) per hectare with coefficient of variation (CV) of 0.13 to 1.26. Twenty-four events representing four levels of herbage mass hetero- geneity (CV = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0) × three levels of paddock size (small, 5–13 ha; medium, 41–67 ha; large, 100–140 ha) were chosen (two replicates per group), and analyzed for the probability that the estimation error exceeded 10% of the mean (10% error probability) using the bootstrap technique. The number of samples required for controlling the 10% error probability below 0.1 increased gradually from 50 to 150 per paddock as the CV increased from 0.3 to 0.7, then sharply to 350 until the CV increased to 1.0, with no effect of paddock size. Taking account of the distribution of CV (< 0.7 in nearly 80% of the events), we propose a general recommendation to take a minimum of 150 samples per paddock for accurate estimation of mean herbage mass in Campos grasslands irrespective of the size of paddocks.

- Abstract
In many species, the offspring of related parents suffer reduced reproductive success, a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. In humans, the importance of this effect has remained unclear, partly because reproduction between close relatives is both rare and frequently associated with confounding social factors. Here, using genomic inbreeding coefficients (FROH) for >1.4 million individuals, we show that FROH is significantly associated (p < 0.0005) with apparently deleterious changes in 32 out of 100 traits analysed. These changes are associated with runs of homozygosity (ROH), but not with common variant homozygosity, suggesting that genetic variants associated with inbreeding depression are predominantly rare. The effect on fertility is striking: FROH equivalent to the offspring of first cousins is associated with a 55% decrease [95% CI 44–66%] in the odds of having children. Finally, the effects of FROH are confirmed within full-sibling pairs, where the variation in FROH is independent of all environmental confounding.

- Abstract
A person's lipid profile is influenced by genetic variants and alcohol consumption, but the contribution of interactions between these exposures has not been studied. We therefore incorporated gene-alcohol interactions into a multiancestry genome-wide association study of levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides. We included 45 studies in stage 1 (genome-wide discovery) and 66 studies in stage 2 (focused follow-up), for a total of 394,584 individuals from 5 ancestry groups. Analyses covered the period July 2014-November 2017. Genetic main effects and interaction effects were jointly assessed by means of a 2-degrees-of-freedom (df) test, and a 1-df test was used to assess the interaction effects alone. Variants at 495 loci were at least suggestively associated (P < 1 × 10-6) with lipid levels in stage 1 and were evaluated in stage 2, followed by combined analyses of stage 1 and stage 2. In the combined analysis of stages 1 and 2, a total of 147 independent loci were associated with lipid levels at P < 5 × 10-8 using 2-df tests, of which 18 were novel. No genome-wide-significant associations were found testing the interaction effect alone. The novel loci included several genes (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 5 (PCSK5), vascular endothelial growth factor B (VEGFB), and apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide 1 (APOBEC1) complementation factor (A1CF)) that have a putative role in lipid metabolism on the basis of existing evidence from cellular and experimental models.

- Abstract
Drug-induced arrhythmia is an adverse drug reaction that can be potentially fatal since it is mostly related to drug-induced QT prolongation, a known risk factor for Torsade de Pointes and sudden cardiac death (SCD). Several risk factors have been described in association to these drug-induced events, such as preexistent cardiac disease and genetic variation. Our objective was to study the genetic susceptibility in pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic pathways underlying suspected drug-induced arrhythmias and sudden unexplained deaths in 32 patients. The genetic component in the pharmacodynamic pathway was studied by analysing 96 genes associated with higher risk of SCD through massive parallel sequencing. Pharmacokinetic-mediated genetic susceptibility was investigated by studying the genes encoding cytochrome P450 enzymes using medium-throughput genotyping. Pharmacodynamic analysis showed three probably pathogenic variants and 45 variants of uncertain significance in 28 patients, several of them previously described in relation to mild or late onset cardiomyopathies. These results suggest that genetic variants in cardiomyopathy genes, in addition to those related with channelopathies, could be relevant to drug-induced cardiotoxicity and contribute to the arrhythmogenic phenotype. Pharmacokinetic analysis showed three patients that could have an altered metabolism of the drugs they received involving CYP2C19 and/or CYP2D6, probably contributing to the arrhythmogenic phenotype. The study of genetic variants in both pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic pathways may be a useful strategy to understand the multifactorial mechanism of drug-induced events in both clinical practice and forensic field. However, it is necessary to comprehensively study and evaluate the contribution of the genetic susceptibility to drug-induced cardiotoxicity.

- Abstract
Heavy alcohol consumption is an established risk factor for hypertension; the mechanism by which alcohol consumption impact blood pressure (BP) regulation remains unknown. We hypothesized that a genome-wide association study accounting for gene-alcohol consumption interaction for BP might identify additional BP loci and contribute to the understanding of alcohol-related BP regulation. We conducted a large two-stage investigation incorporating joint testing of main genetic effects and single nucleotide variant (SNV)-alcohol consumption interactions. In Stage 1, genome-wide discovery meta-analyses in ≈131K individuals across several ancestry groups yielded 3, 514 SNVs (245 loci) with suggestive evidence of association (P < 1.0 × 10-5). In Stage 2, these SNVs were tested for independent external replication in ≈440K individuals across multiple ancestries. We identified and replicated (at Bonferroni correction threshold) five novel BP loci (380 SNVs in 21 genes) and 49 previously reported BP loci (2, 159 SNVs in 109 genes) in European ancestry, and in multi-ancestry meta-analyses (P < 5.0 × 10-8). For African ancestry samples, we detected 18 potentially novel BP loci (P < 5.0 × 10-8) in Stage 1 that warrant further replication. Additionally, correlated meta-analysis identified eight novel BP loci (11 genes). Several genes in these loci (e.g., PINX1, GATA4, BLK, FTO and GABBR2) have been previously reported to be associated with alcohol consumption. These findings provide insights into the role of alcohol consumption in the genetic architecture of hypertension.

- Abstract
Blood pressure (BP) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and more than 200 genetic loci associated with BP are known. Here, we perform a multi-stage genome-wide association study for BP (max N = 289,038) principally in East Asians and meta-analysis in East Asians and Europeans. We report 19 new genetic loci and ancestry-specific BP variants, conforming to a common ancestry-specific variant association model. At 10 unique loci, distinct non-rare ancestry-specific variants colocalize within the same linkage disequilibrium block despite the significantly discordant effects for the proxy shared variants between the ethnic groups. The genome-wide transethnic correlation of causal-variant effect-sizes is 0.898 and 0.851 for systolic and diastolic BP, respectively. Some of the ancestry-specific association signals are also influenced by a selective sweep. Our results provide new evidence for the role of common ancestry-specific variants and natural selection in ethnic differences in complex traits such as BP.

- Abstract
Our proposed “matrix-type” semiconductor detectors are applied for studying the local energy balance of bulk electrons in the tandem-mirror GAMMA 10. The matrix-type detector array consists of compactly produced six “rows” having different thicknesses of thin dead layers (SiO2) on its surface. Each row has seven channel units (“columns”) for measuring radiation profiles in the radial direction of plasmas. These various SiO2 layers are, thus, employed as “unbreakable ultrathin radiation-absorption filters” having various thicknesses to distinguish x rays from charge-exchange neutral particles and analyze the radial profiles of both plasma ion and electron temperatures simultaneously. The radial profiles of the energy confinement time and the thermal diffusivity obtained from the local energy balance analysis imply that the improvement of the plasma confinement is associated with the strong shear of radial electric fields due to a high plasma confining potentials.

- Abstract
For the purpose of end-loss-ion and -electron analyses in open-field plasmas, a compact-sized electrostatic end-loss-current detector is proposed on the basis of a self-collection principle for suppressing the effects of secondary-electron emission from a metal collector. For employing this specific method, it is worth noting that no further additional magnetic systems except the ambient open-ended magnetic fields are required in the detector operation. This characteristic property provides a compactness of the total detection system and availability for its use in plasma confinement devices without disturbing plasma-confining magnetic fields. The detector consists of a set of parallel metal plates with respect to lines of ambient magnetic forces of a plasma device for analyzing incident ion currents along with a grid for shielding the collector against strays due to the metal-plate biasing. The characterization experiments are carried out by the use of a test-ion-beam line along with an additional use of a Helmholtz coil system for the formation of open magnetic fields similar to those in the GAMMA 10 end region. The applications of the developed end-loss-current detector in the GAMMA 10 plasma experiments are demonstrated under the conditions with simultaneous incidence of energetic electrons produced by electron-cyclotron heatings for end-loss-plugging potential formation.

- Abstract
The quantum efficiency of an ultralow-energy-sensitive pure-Ge (ULE Ge) detector is investigated using synchrotron radiation from the storage ring at AIST especially for x-ray pulse-height analyses (PHAs), down to a few hundred eV. Several types of x-ray diagnostics such as x-ray PHA, x-ray absorption methods, and x-ray tomography using the ULE Ge detector, a NaI(Tl) detector, as well as a microchannel-plate tomography system are employed for investigating electron distribution functions and electron temperature profiles with preliminary central electron-cyclotron heating in the central cell of the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror. These measurements play an important role in studying an essential physics scaling of the electron temperature as a function of electron confining potential in tandem mirror plasmas.

- Abstract
An excellent noise figure and high linearity, K-band p-HEMT LNA MMIC, that incorporates single-bias configuration and negative feedback circuit, has be en developed for LMDS (Local Multi-point Distribution Service) and satellite communication. The third order intercept point (IP3) of this MMIC is 20 dBm, while output power at 1-dB gain compression is 8.5 dBm. The IP3 and noise figure is 19.5 +/- 1 dBm and 1.8 +/- 0.2 dB, respectively, at frequencies between 24 and 32 GHz. The die size of the MMIC is 1.9 mm. This MMIC shows a potential reliable application in high-speed wireless access system.

- Abstract
Heavy-ion radiotherapy gives a good localized dose distribution just on a cancer tumor. In order to emphasize this advantage, the verification system of a particle range and an irradiated area in a human body has been developed for the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) at National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). The idea comes from the fact that the stopping position of a short-lived positron emitting nuclei, such as 11C, 15O or 19Ne, can be precisely detected by measuring annihilation gamma-rays.
