Near-surface mercury and ozone depletion events occur in the lowest part of the atmosphere during Arctic spring. Mercury depletion is the first step in a process that transforms long-lived elemental mercury to more reactive forms within the Arctic that are deposited to the cryosphere, ocean, and other surfaces, which can ultimately get integrated into the Arctic food web. Depletion of both mercury and ozone occur due to the presence of reactive halogen radicals that are released from snow, ice, and aerosols. In this work, we added a detailed description of the Arctic atmospheric mercury cycle to our recently published version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem 4.3.3) that includes Arctic bromine and chlorine chemistry and activation/recycling on snow and aerosols. The major advantage of our modelling approach is the online calculation of bromine concentrations and emission/recycling that is required to simulate the hourly and daily variability of Arctic mercury depletion. We used this model to study coupling between reactive cycling of mercury, ozone, and bromine during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) spring season in 2020 and evaluated results compared to land-based, ship-based, and remote sensing observations. The model predicts that elemental mercury oxidation is driven largely by bromine chemistry and that particulate mercury is the major form of oxidized mercury. The model predicts that the majority (74%) of oxidized mercury deposited to land-based snow is re-emitted to the atmosphere as gaseous elemental mercury, while a minor fraction (4%) of oxidized mercury that is deposited to sea ice is re-emitted during spring. Our work demonstrates that hourly differences in bromine/ozone chemistry in the atmosphere must be considered to capture the springtime Arctic mercury cycle, including its integration into the cryosphere and ocean.

Atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations in the Arctic exhibit a clear summertime maximum, while the origin of this peak is still a matter of debate in the community. Based on summertime observations during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition and a modeling approach, we further investigate the sources of atmospheric Hg in the central Arctic. Simulations with a generalized additive model (GAM) show that long-range transport of anthropogenic and terrestrial Hg from lower latitudes is a minor contribution (~2%), and more than 50% of the explained GEM variability is caused by oceanic evasion. A potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis further shows that oceanic evasion is not significant throughout the ice-covered central Arctic Ocean but mainly occurs in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) due to the specific environmental conditions in that region. Our results suggest that this regional process could be the leading contributor to the observed summertime GEM maximum. In the context of rapid Arctic warming and the observed increase in width of the MIZ, oceanic Hg evasion may become more significant and strengthen the role of the central Arctic Ocean as a summertime source of atmospheric Hg.

Dry deposition to the surface is one of the main removal pathways of tropospheric ozone (O₃). We quantified for the first time the impact of O₃ deposition to the Arctic sea ice on the planetary boundary layer (PBL) O₃ concentration and budget using year-round flux and concentration observations from the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) campaign and simulations with a single-column atmospheric chemistry and meteorological model (SCM). Based on eddy-covariance O₃ surface flux observations, we find a median surface resistance on the order of 20,000 s m¯¹, resulting in a dry deposition velocity of approximately 0.005 cm s¯¹. This surface resistance is up to an order of magnitude larger than traditionally used values in many atmospheric chemistry and transport models. The SCM is able to accurately represent the yearly cycle, with maxima above 40 ppb in the winter and minima around 15 ppb at the end of summer. However, the observed springtime ozone depletion events are not captured by the SCM. In winter, the modelled PBL O₃ budget is governed by dry deposition at the surface mostly compensated by downward turbulent transport of O₃ towards the surface. Advection, which is accounted for implicitly by nudging to reanalysis data, poses a substantial, mostly negative, contribution to the simulated PBL O₃ budget in summer. During episodes with low wind speed (<5 m s¯¹) and shallow PBL (<50 m), the 7-day mean dry deposition removal rate can reach up to 1.0 ppb h¯¹. Our study highlights the importance of an accurate description of dry deposition to Arctic sea ice in models to quantify the current and future O₃ sink in the Arctic, impacting the tropospheric O₃ budget, which has been modified in the last century largely due to anthropogenic activities.

Chlorine radicals are strong atmospheric oxidants known to play an important role in the depletion of surface ozone and the degradation of methane in the Arctic troposphere. Initial oxidation processes of chlorine produce chlorine oxides, and it has been speculated that the final oxidation steps lead to the formation of chloric (HClO3) and perchloric (HClO4) acids, although these two species have not been detected in the atmosphere. Here, we present atmospheric observations of gas-phase HClO3 and HClO4. Significant levels of HClO3 were observed during springtime at Greenland (Villum Research Station), Ny-Ålesund research station and over the central Arctic Ocean, on-board research vessel Polarstern during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of the Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) campaign, with estimated concentrations up to 7 × 106 molecule cm-3. The increase in HClO3, concomitantly with that in HClO4, was linked to the increase in bromine levels. These observations indicated that bromine chemistry enhances the formation of OClO, which is subsequently oxidized into HClO3 and HClO4 by hydroxyl radicals. HClO3 and HClO4 are not photoactive and therefore their loss through heterogeneous uptake on aerosol and snow surfaces can function as a previously missing atmospheric sink for reactive chlorine, thereby reducing the chlorine-driven oxidation capacity in the Arctic boundary layer. Our study reveals additional chlorine species in the atmosphere, providing further insights into atmospheric chlorine cycling in the polar environment.

An international team designed and implemented the comprehensive program to document and characterize all aspects of the Arctic atmospheric system in unprecedented detail, using a variety of approaches, and across multiple scales. These measurements were coordinated with other observational teams to explore cross-cutting and coupled interactions with the Arctic Ocean, sea ice, and ecosystem through a variety of physical and biogeochemical processes. This overview outlines the breadth and complexity of the atmospheric research program, which was organized into 4 subgroups: atmospheric state, clouds and precipitation, gases and aerosols, and energy budgets. Atmospheric variability over the annual cycle revealed important influences from a persistent large-scale winter circulation pattern, leading to some storms with pressure and winds that were outside the interquartile range of past conditions suggested by long-term reanalysis. Similarly, the MOSAiC location was warmer and wetter in summer than the reanalysis climatology, in part due to its close proximity to the sea ice edge. Data are available for download at http://arcticdata.io/data/10.18739/A2R49GB1J These files are merged, 10 Hertz (Hz) measurements of 3 dimensional wind components (u,v,w) and dry air mole fractions of carbon dioxide (ppm) and methane (ppm). These are intended as raw files for computation of turbulent flux. The time lag between wind and gas measurements due to the long gas inlet has been corrected in this dataset (i.e. the gas concentration time series is time-shifted to synchronize the trace gas and vertical wind speed measurements). Files are provided in netCDF format with the standard CDF epoch timestamp (milliseconds since 01-Jan-1970 00:00Z) and year/month/day/hour/minute/second time vectors, to simplify date-time calculations. The wind coordinate system is right-handed and earth-relative, where u is northward velocity, v is westward velocity and w is upward velocity. Wind data is from the 10-meter ultrasonic anemometer on the MetCity tower. These data are available in original form from our collaborators (doi:10.18739/A2VM42Z5F) and are provided here in merged format with the gas data as a convenience to facilitate flux calculations.

True and relative wind speed and direction measured from the bow of the research icebreaker FS Polarstern during the 2019-2020 Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) field program. These are minute-averaged values of 1 Hertz (Hz) raw measurements with an RM Young model 86004 heated, 2 Dimensional (2D) ultrasonic anemometer. The measurement location was ~18 meters (m) height on a triangular meteorological tower on the ship's bow, on a horizontal arm extending ~ 1.5m in front of the tower. Sensor heating prevented ice formation in almost all conditions, but there were a few periods of ice build-up in severe freezing rain or fog conditions. The north (N) orientation of the anemometer was in the direction of the ship's bow. True wind speed and direction are computed from relative winds and the ship heading. Due to obstructions from the ship's superstructure, measurements for relative wind directions beyond +/- 130 degrees from the bow are not accurate and subject to high variability. Measurements over the remaining wind sector (+/- 120 deg from the bow) are slightly distorted by the divergence of streamlines over the ship. As a convenience to users, ship navigation parameters (latitude, longitude, speed-over-ground, course-over-ground, and heading) are provided. Unlike bromine, the effect of iodine chemistry on the Arctic surface ozone budget is poorly constrained. We present ship-based measurements of halogen oxides in the high Arctic boundary layer from the sunlit period of March to October 2020 and show that iodine enhances springtime tropospheric ozone depletion. We find that chemical reactions between iodine and ozone are the second highest contributor to ozone loss over the study period, after ozone photolysis-initiated loss and ahead of bromine.

Mercury is a toxic element of serious concern for human and environmental health. Understanding its natural cycling in the environment is an important goal towards assessing its impacts and the effectiveness of mitigation strategies. Due to the unique chemical and physical properties of mercury, the atmosphere is the dominant transport pathway for this heavy metal, with the consequence that regions far removed from sources can be impacted. However, there exists a dearth of long-Term monitoring of atmospheric mercury, particularly in the tropics and Southern Hemisphere. This paper presents the first 2 years of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) measurements taken at the Australian Tropical Atmospheric Research Station (ATARS) in northern Australia, as part of the Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS). Annual mean GEM concentrations determined at ATARS (0.95ĝ€±ĝ€0.12ĝ€ngĝ€mĝ'3) are consistent with recent observations at other sites in the Southern Hemisphere. Comparison with GEM data from other Australian monitoring sites suggests a concentration gradient that decreases with increasing latitude. Seasonal analysis shows that GEM concentrations at ATARS are significantly lower in the distinct wet monsoon season than in the dry season. T his result provides insight into alterations of natural mercury cycling processes as a result of changes in atmospheric humidity, oceanic/terrestrial fetch, and convective mixing, and invites future investigation using wet mercury deposition measurements. Due to its location relative to the atmospheric equator, ATARS intermittently samples air originating from the Northern Hemisphere, allowing an opportunity to gain greater understanding of inter-hemispheric transport of mercury and other atmospheric species. Diurnal cycles of GEM at ATARS show distinct nocturnal depletion events that are attributed to dry deposition under stable boundary layer conditions. Using data from the United States Census 1990, the Energy Information Administration estimated in 2000 that 36.8 percent of the 29,375 occupied housing units on the Navajo Nation lacked electricity. The Navajo Nation has very low population densities, and the large distances between homes make the cost of providing conventional sources of electricity prohibitive. Arizona Public Service, the primary provider of electricity in Arizona, estimates the cost of erecting power lines to be roughly $25,000 to $30,000 per mile, an impossible sum for most families in this region, where the unemployment rate hovers around 50 percent. Given the extremely low population densities, it is simply inconceivable that many houses could be connected to the power grid. More recent calculations, based on Census 2000 data, show that between 10,000 and 23,000 homes need some type of electricity provision system that is not connected to the grid. An estimate of 18,000 homes appears to be a reasonable current target figure (this number could very well increase as the population grows). The predicted cost of any program providing electricity and the associated appliances to these homes falls between $115 and $350 million. Using the baseline figure of 18,000 homes, the estimate is roughly $235 million. These are costs above the typical construction costs for the expected new housing units. The authors have completed an analysis of the potential success of a small business operating on the Navajo Nation installing self-contained solar systems, including battery storage, for these 18,000 homes. Several scenarios were analyzed, and the individual prices of the systems ranged from $10,000 to $19,000, depending on the size of the system and the level of retail markup.

The invention relates to an apparatus and method for generating target range, azimuth angle, or elevation angle output signals corresponding to an apparent beam in a multiple-feed monopulse radar system. The multiple-feed monopulse radar system according to the present invention includes a transmitter/receiver unit, an adder/subtracter unit and a video comparator/adder unit. The transmitter/receiver unit is used to generate first and second actual antenna beams. Echoes caused by such actual beams are received and processed to provide first sum and first difference signals and second sum and second difference signals corresponding to the first and second actual beams, respectively. These signals are then supplied to the adder/subtracter unit which adds the first sum and first difference signals to provide a result sigma sub 1 + K delta sub 1, subtracts the first sum and first difference signals to provide a result sigma sub 1 - K delta, adds the second sum and second difference signals to provide a result sigma sub 2 + K delta sub 1, and subtracts the second sum and second difference signals to provide a result sigma sub 2 - K delta sub 2., Supersedes PAT-APPL-889 920-92.

The invention relates to an apparatus and method for generating target range, azimuth angle, or elevation angle output signals corresponding to an apparent beam in a multiple-feed monopulse radar system. The multiple-feed monopulse radar system according to the present invention includes a transmitter/receiver unit, an adder/subtracter unit and a video comparator/adder unit. The transmitter/receiver unit is used to generate first and second actual antenna beams. Echoes caused by such actual beams are received and processed to provide first sum and first difference signals and second sum and second difference signals corresponding to the first and second actual beams, respectively. These signals are then supplied to the adder/subtracter unit which adds the first sum and first difference signals to provide a result Sigma 1 +K Delta 1, subtracts the first sum and first difference signals to provide a result Sigma 1-K Delta, adds the second sum and second difference signals to provide a result Sigma 2 + K Delta 1, and subtracts the second sum and second difference signals to provide a result Sigma 2-K Delta 2. These results are supplied to the video comparator/adder unit which generates the sum or difference signals corresponding to the apparent beam. Through the mere addition of a comparator/adder unit to a prior art multiple-feed monopulse radar system, the precision of target range, azimuth angle or elevation angle measurements may be increased dramatically without significantly increasing the size, cost or complexity of the monopulse radar system.

A generic monopulse radar simulation model is being developed to assess the effectiveness of counter-measures and counter-countermeasures in selectable tactical scenarios. In this report, track performance consideration for monopulse radars is analyzed in detail. The radar tracking stability and sensitivity are analyzed in terms of the open-loop gain crossover, open-loop phase margin, and the closed-loop bandwidth and damping ration. Track loops are synthesized through filter pole/zero placement with consideration of the overall loop gain. An analytical solution is derived as a function of radar parameters that describes the angle and range tracking responses. This eliminates time-consuming computer simulations and provides detailed insight into how basic radar characteristics affect monopulse radar track.

The design of a wideband multiplexer is based on the conversion of a plurality of electrical input data signals to be multiplexed to optical signals, differentially delaying this plurality of optical signals, and then summing these signals optically and converting the sum signal back to an electrical signal. This scheme is advantageous because optical delay circuits add very little dispersion to the signals on which they are operating. This low dispersion characteristic is due to the fact that the bandwidth of the signal being operated on becomes infinitesimal relative to the optical carrier frequency. Thus, the percentage bandwidth is extremely small. In particular, it is noted that optical delay lines implemented by means of optical fiber coils have a very wide bandwidth and low loss. Accordingly, electrical input signals are used to modulate light propagating through optical fiber delay lines. The resultant differentially delayed optical signals are then summed and provided to an optical receiver.

A target indicating system includes a high-range-resolution monopulse radar which produces four dimensions of data: a range trigger signal, elevation angle error data, azimuth angle error data, and range video data. Additionally included is a display system having an x-y display for presenting the four dimensions of data. The display is improved by the addition of a sweep generator, elevation summary amplifier, and azimuth summing amplifier which cause the trace on the display to be driven diagonally and generate an isometric presentation of the four dimensions of data. The patent describes an accurate, simple and flexible method for processing the receiver output of a high range resolution monopulse tracking radar to generate range and angle tracking error voltages based on the location of only the leading edge of the target echo replacing the conventional analog range error detectors and angle error processors in closed tracking loop systems. The invention also processes the radar return signal to avoid interference from repeater jammers or multipath returns at low angle tracking.

The patent describes a monopulse radar system which optically displays radar information 3-D for visual identification of targets. By visually displaying the radar target information in 3-D, the radar operator can quickly discern from its shape whether a particular target is a bomber, fighter, etc. and whether it is an enemy or friendly target. The system receives data from a high range resolution monopulse radar system having wideband monopulse tracking capability and processes it in a Display Processor so that its three outputs are representative of the three coordinate data information. The data is then displayed in a three coordinate display apparatus.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate Midland Bermuda as an alternative cash crop for West Texas producers. The more specific objectives of the study are to: (1) determine alternative methods of sprigging Midland Bermuda; (2) prepare budgets on the establlsh- RMsnt, maintenance, and cost requirements of Midland Bermuda; (3) determine the maintenance and other economic problems of the enterprise which affect costs; <4) evaluate cost and return data of the enterprise; and (5) determine Midland Bermuda's competitiveness with other study area enterprises for available production factors.

The acceptance test gain determination for the 29 foot diameter Cassegrainian antenna of the AN/FPQ-6 radar was performed by antenna pattern integration techniques. This approach was used because of time limitations and difficulties of setting up an accurate boresight range for conventional gain comparison with a gain standard. By pattern integration of both the antenna and the feed patterns, the effective loss of near-in sidelobes and the spillover around the Cassegrainian sub-reflector could be determined separately with good accuracy. This approach gives considerable information on several characteristics of the antenna which led, in part, to changes for improving antenna performance. The less significant losses were estimated. The resultant gain determined by this technique averaged at 51.1-db over the band. This was confirmed at a later evaluation program where direct measurement gave an average gain of 51.2-db over the band.

A proposed hull-mounted pro-submarine torpedo countermeasure is examined, which is an adaptation of an NRL-developed countermeasure against tracking radar systems. This device should be effective against all known types of active acoustic homing torpedoes and, modified, possibly against passive acoustic torpedoes. Its operation is based on the fact that the apparent position of any finite target of complex structure, as seen by a tracking system, will wander about the physical center of the target. This natural phenomenon is exploited by the countermeasure device so that the echo returned to the tracking system appears to come from a location many target spans away from the target. Preliminary experimental data indicate the feasibility of this technique as applied to sonar.

A graphical technique is described for obtaining the transfer characteristic, including phase, of a circuit or servo system from a time plot of the response to a unit step. The technique provides high accuracy in a few minutes of time using a graphical harmonic analyzer. In even less time the major features such as overshoot may be determined. Although computers have been programmed for this analysis, this technique can be performed with simple equipment that can readily be taken into the field to obtain on-the-spot analysis within the time that would have been required to read sufficient data points for a computer analysis. Studies of microwave monitoring techniques have resulted in a potential method of monitoring of the percentage of sea water contamination to an accuracy of 0.25%. Investigation was made of both the dielectric constant and the dissipation (microwave energy loss) characteristics of contaminated fuel. The dissipation measurement gave the greater accuracy which improved with increasing microwave frequency. The dissipation measured for all samples of uncontaminated fuels was very small compared to the sensitivity to water, so that the effects of the differences in the different sources of fuel were minimized. Testing of samples from all parts of the world with accurately mixed percentages of sea water showed that this microwave technique can be used to monitor the percentage of sea water to within 0.25% of the actual value regardless of the source of the oil. The ability to measure to this order of accuracy was limited, in part, by the difficulty of preparing sufficiently precise sample mixtures for testing the technique. The microwave technique also lends itself readily to convenient practical implementation of continuous monitoring of fuel flowing to the furnaces. (Author)

The patent describes an apparatus for determining the water content of fuel oil. Microwave energy is directed through a chamber through which the fuel oil passes and a measure of the attenuation of the microwave energy is made. The attenuation of microwave energy as it passes through the oil determines the amount of water contamination within the oil. The system operates in the millimeter wave range where there is little attenuation caused by uncontaminated oil and a high attenuation caused by even small amounts of water contamination.
