Abstract: Inclusion at academic events is facing increased scrutiny as the communities these events serve raise their expectations for who can practically attend. Active efforts in recent years to bring more diversity to academic events have brought progress and created momentum. However, we must reflect on these efforts and determine which underrepresented groups are being disadvantaged. Inclusion at academic events is important to ensure diversity of discourse and opinion, to help build networks, and to avoid academic siloing. All of these contribute to the development of a robust and resilient academic field. We have developed these Ten Simple Rules both to amplify the voices that have been speaking out and to celebrate the progress of many Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity practices that continue to drive the organisation of academic events. The Rules aim to raise awareness as well as provide actionable suggestions and tools to support these initiatives further. This aims to support academic organisations such as the Deep Learning Indaba, Neuromatch Academy, the IBRO-Simons Computational Neuroscience Imbizo, Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG), Arabs in Neuroscience, FAIRPoints, and OLS (formerly Open Life Science). Abstract: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) communities are underrepresented in biomedical studies, highlighting the importance of developing biospecimen collection protocols aimed at engaging SGM participants. We aimed to learn more about SGM participants’ experiences with a remote (i.e., not performed at a central location) biospecimen collection study pioneered by The PRIDE Study, a cohort study of SGM adults residing in the United States and its territories. Feedback was collected from 112 SGM participants following blood donation for a parent study investigating the relationship between minority stress, substance use, and epigenetic markers of substance use and minority stress. We used an inductive and collaborative approach to qualitative analysis and identified major themes and areas for protocol improvement. Major themes among participant feedback were as follows: (1) communication with the research team, (2) convenience of donation, (3) interactions with clinical laboratory staff, and (4) anonymity and privacy. Most participants indicated that they experienced little to no problems during the donation process and expressed approval for the clarity and transparency of the informed consent process, ease of communication with the research team, and measures taken to protect participant confidentiality during their appointment. The most common challenges encountered by participants related to the inconvenience of handling and transporting study materials to the clinical laboratory site and the clinical laboratory staff’s unfamiliarity with the study protocol. Some participants indicated a preference for more elements of the study protocol (e.g., transporting collection materials) to be left to the responsibility of the research team. Future studies should carefully consider the delegation of responsibility between participants and the research team to balance both study reach and participant accessibility. Abstract: The study aimed to document factors affecting the willingness to engage in biospecimen donation for substance use research among Black and Hispanic/Latinx sexual and gender minority (SGM) people. From May to July 2022, we interviewed 22 Black and Hispanic/Latinx SGM people from The Population Research in Identity and Disparities for Equality Study, a cohort of SGM people in the United States and its territories, using Zoom videoconferencing software. Fourteen participants were cisgender sexual minority people, and eight participants were gender minority people who were also sexual minority. We took an inductive, collaborative qualitative analytic approach to identify themes. Themes included the following: (1) community benefits, (2) personal benefits, (3) community exploitation, (4) personal risks, (5) convenience, (6) trustworthiness of the research team, (7) perceived value in donating, and (8) normalization of biospecimen collection. Participants were generally motivated to engage in biospecimen donation for altruistic purposes. The most cited concerns were related to data security, misuse, and privacy. Researchers must be proactive in building trust with Black and Hispanic/Latinx SGM communities to increase engagement, diversify biospecimen repositories, and reduce health inequities. Future research involving biospecimens should provide biospecimen education during the consent process and prioritize participant convenience.

Abstract: $ $The first public 0.9-4.4 $\mu$m NIRCam images of the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Time Domain Field (TDF) uncovered many galaxies that display point-source features in their cores as seen in the longer wavelength filters. We visually identified a sample of 66 galaxies ($\sim$1 galaxy per arcmin$^2$) with point-like cores and fit their spectral energy distributions (SED)s using EAZY and CIGALE to characterize the sample's active galactic nucleus (AGN) and host galaxy parameters. Single-template fitting best fits $70\%$ of the sample with a Seyfert-blended SED. With CIGALE we compute the median fractional AGN contribution to the 0.1-30.0 $\mu$m flux to be $0.30\pm0.06$, and that $56\%$ of the 66 galaxies have star-formation rates in the starburst range whereas the remainder are near the star-formation main sequence. There are Very Large Array (VLA) 3 GHz detections for 24/66 galaxies, implying some combination of AGN emission and vigorous star formation. We present a novel sample selection procedure in tandem to the morphological sample selection based on objects' light profiles at 4.4 $\mu$m. This procedure identifies a parameter space which probes point-source features and automatically recovers our visual sample with minimal contamination from both stars and brighter galaxies. This procedure may be used in other extant and future NIRCam images to streamline the search for galaxies with point-like cores. 7. Experimental study of Alfv\'en wave reflection from an Alfv\'en-speed gradient relevant to the solar coronal holes

Abstract: We report the first experimental detection of a reflected Alfv\'en wave from an Alfv\'en-speed gradient under conditions similar to those in coronal holes. The experiments were conducted in the Large Plasma Device at the University of California, Los Angeles. We present the experimentally measured dependence of the coefficient of reflection versus the wave inhomogeneity parameter, i.e., the ratio of the wave length of the incident wave to the length scale of the gradient. Two-fluid simulations using the Gkeyll code qualitatively agree with and support the experimental findings. Our experimental results support models of wave heating that rely on wave reflection at low heights from a smooth Alfv\'en-speed gradient to drive turbulence.

11. Potential to Identify the Neutrino Mass Ordering with Reactor Antineutrinos in JUNO

Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment under construction in South of China. This paper presents an updated estimate of JUNO's sensitivity to the neutrino mass ordering using the reactor antineutrinos emitted from eight nuclear reactor cores in the Taishan and Yangjiang nuclear power plants. This measurement is planned by studying the fine interference pattern caused by quasi-vacuum oscillations in the oscillated antineutrino spectrum at a baseline of 52.5~km and is completely independent of the CP violating phase and the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{23}$. The sensitivity is obtained through a joint analysis of JUNO and TAO detectors utilizing the best available knowledge to date about the location and overburden of the JUNO experimental site, the local and global nuclear reactors, the JUNO and TAO detectors responses, the expected event rates and spectra of signal and backgrounds, and the systematic uncertainties of the analysis inputs. It is found that a 3$\sigma$ median sensitivity to reject the wrong mass ordering hypothesis can be reached with an exposure of about 6.5 years $\times$ 26.6~GW thermal power.

Abstract: We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. 13. Prediction of Energy Resolution in the JUNO Experiment

Abstract: This paper presents the energy resolution study in the JUNO experiment, incorporating the latest knowledge acquired during the detector construction phase. The determination of neutrino mass ordering in JUNO requires an exceptional energy resolution better than 3\% at 1 MeV. To achieve this ambitious goal, significant efforts have been undertaken in the design and production of the key components of the JUNO detector. Various factors affecting the detection of inverse beta decay signals have an impact on the energy resolution, extending beyond the statistical fluctuations of the detected number of photons, such as the properties of liquid scintillator, performance of photomultiplier tubes, and the energy reconstruction algorithm. To account for these effects, a full JUNO simulation and reconstruction approach is employed. This enables the modeling of all relevant effects and the evaluation of associated inputs to accurately estimate the energy resolution. The study reveals an energy resolution of 2.95\% at 1 MeV. Furthermore, the study assesses the contribution of major effects to the overall energy resolution budget. This analysis serves as a reference for interpreting future measurements of energy resolution during JUNO data taking. Moreover, it provides a guideline in comprehending the energy resolution characteristics of liquid scintillator-based detectors.

14. A Novel Nuanced Conversation Evaluation Framework for Large Language Models in Mental Health

Abstract: Understanding the conversation abilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) can help lead to its more cautious and appropriate deployment. This is especially important for safety-critical domains like mental health, where someone's life may depend on the exact wording of a response to an urgent question. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for evaluating the nuanced conversation abilities of LLMs. Within it, we develop a series of quantitative metrics developed from literature on using psychotherapy conversation analysis literature. While we ensure that our framework and metrics are transferable by researchers to relevant adjacent domains, we apply them to the mental health field. We use our framework to evaluate several popular frontier LLMs, including some GPT and Llama models, through a verified mental health dataset. Our results show that GPT4 Turbo can perform significantly more similarly to verified therapists than other selected LLMs. We conduct additional analysis to examine how LLM conversation performance varies across specific mental health topics. Our results indicate that GPT4 Turbo performs well in achieving high correlation with verified therapists in particular topics such as Parenting and Relationships. We believe our contributions will help researchers develop better LLMs that, in turn, will more positively support people's lives.

15. Transformers Learn Nonlinear Features In Context: Nonconvex Mean-field Dynamics on the Attention Landscape

Abstract: Large language models based on the Transformer architecture have demonstrated impressive capabilities to learn in context. However, existing theoretical studies on how this phenomenon arises are limited to the dynamics of a single layer of attention trained on linear regression tasks. In this paper, we study the optimization of a Transformer consisting of a fully connected layer followed by a linear attention layer. The MLP acts as a common nonlinear representation or feature map, greatly enhancing the power of in-context learning. We prove in the mean-field and two-timescale limit that the infinite-dimensional loss landscape for the distribution of parameters, while highly nonconvex, becomes quite benign. We also analyze the second-order stability of mean-field dynamics and show that Wasserstein gradient flow almost always avoids saddle points. Furthermore, we establish novel methods for obtaining concrete improvement rates both away from and near critical points. 16. Learning Collective Variables with Synthetic Data Augmentation through Physics-inspired Geodesic Interpolation

Abstract: In molecular dynamics simulations, rare events, such as protein folding, are typically studied using enhanced sampling techniques, most of which are based on the definition of a collective variable (CV) along which acceleration occurs. Obtaining an expressive CV is crucial, but often hindered by the lack of information about the particular event, e.g., the transition from unfolded to folded conformation. We propose a simulation-free data augmentation strategy using physics-inspired metrics to generate geodesic interpolations resembling protein folding transitions, thereby improving sampling efficiency without true transition state samples. Leveraging interpolation progress parameters, we introduce a regression-based learning scheme for CV models, which outperforms classifier-based methods when transition state data are limited and noisy.

Abstract: This study contains a document analysis of articles in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. It's a social constructionist analysis with a discourse theory. The empirical material is published articles from the newspaper Aftonbladet between the dates 18th of October till 17th of November. Every article that contained the words “gang crime” and “gun violence” was selected. 36 articles have been read and analyzed with Donileen Loseke's (2003) discourse theory together with Erving Goffman's (2020) concept of stigma. The chosen theory is written by Loseke (2010) and it’s about how we construct people with social problems in two categories based on our presumptions, conditions, and values. Either we construct people as a victim or a villain depending on whether we feel sympathy for them or not. The analysis has been steered through themes that we could see while we were reading. Then we studied our empirical material using the theoretical framework and chosen themes. The results are that the construction of both villains and victims appears in the empirical material. With this study, we identified factors that have a part in the social construction of a villain in Aftonbladet's articles. For instance, you might be constructed as a villain if you have a cultural background that differs from the Swedish community. Or maybe if you are socially active in an area that is viewed poorly. But you can be constructed as a victim based on your age if you are a child, or if you’re a product of dysfunctional family relationships, loss of education or maybe have been growing up in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area. These conclusions are based on the analysis that has been done on news- and debate articles. We problematize the fact that gang criminals are portrayed as victims and the risks associated with extending the construction of villains to innocent people.

18. Interpolation and differentiation of alchemical degrees of freedom in machine learning interatomic potentials

Abstract: Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have become a workhorse of modern atomistic simulations, and recently published universal MLIPs, pre-trained on large datasets, have demonstrated remarkable accuracy and generalizability. However, the computational cost of MLIPs limits their applicability to chemically disordered systems requiring large simulation cells or to sample-intensive statistical methods. Here, we report the use of continuous and differentiable alchemical degrees of freedom in atomistic materials simulations, exploiting the fact that graph neural network MLIPs represent discrete elements as real-valued tensors. The proposed method introduces alchemical atoms with corresponding weights into the input graph, alongside modifications to the message-passing and readout mechanisms of MLIPs, and allows smooth interpolation between the compositional states of materials. The end-to-end differentiability of MLIPs enables efficient calculation of the gradient of energy with respect to the compositional weights. Leveraging these gradients, we propose methodologies for optimizing the composition of solid solutions towards target macroscopic properties and conducting alchemical free energy simulations to quantify the free energy of vacancy formation and composition changes. The approach offers an avenue for extending the capabilities of universal MLIPs in the modeling of compositional disorder and characterizing the phase stabilities of complex materials systems.

19. Upsample Guidance: Scale Up Diffusion Models without Training

Abstract: Diffusion models have demonstrated superior performance across various generative tasks including images, videos, and audio. However, they encounter difficulties in directly generating high-resolution samples. Previously proposed solutions to this issue involve modifying the architecture, further training, or partitioning the sampling process into multiple stages. These methods have the limitation of not being able to directly utilize pre-trained models as-is, requiring additional work. In this paper, we introduce upsample guidance, a technique that adapts pretrained diffusion model (e.g., $512^2$) to generate higher-resolution images (e.g., $1536^2$) by adding only a single term in the sampling process. Remarkably, this technique does not necessitate any additional training or relying on external models. We demonstrate that upsample guidance can be applied to various models, such as pixel-space, latent space, and video diffusion models. Abstract: Emerging memory technologies, such as persistent memory and ultra-low- latency SSDs, change the tradeoffs system designers must consider. As storage, they offer considerably faster persistence than traditional SSDs and hard disks. As memory, they expand the capacity of main memory in a single machine at a lower price than conventional, expensive DRAM. Despite these advantages, efficiently leveraging them remains challenging in a variety of software stacks including file systems, databases, graph processing systems, and serverless computing.This dissertation first presents a comprehensive study that reveals the impact of state-of-the-art persistent memory (PMem) storage systems on IO-intensive applications and explores how those applications can best leverage the performance of PMem. It examines various performance problems that PMem introduces at both the file system and application level, and suggests potential optimization paths while discussing their different tradeoffs.Second, the dissertation introduces SubZero, a novel file system API that allows fast and easy access to files residing in PMem file systems. SubZero offers mmap()-like performance for both read and write while providing similar isolation semantics as read() and write(), taking the best of both worlds from file-oriented and memory- oriented IO for efficient access to PMem-resident files.Third, it presents Blaze, a new out-of-core graph processing framework op- timized for ultra-low-latency SSDs. Abstract: High-risk groups, including Indigenous people, are at risk of severe COVID-19. Here we found that Australian First Nations peoples elicit effective immune responses to COVID-19 BNT162b2 vaccination, including neutralizing antibodies, receptor-binding domain (RBD) antibodies, SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific B cells, and CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. In First Nations participants, RBD IgG antibody titers were correlated with body mass index and negatively correlated with age. Reduced RBD antibodies, spike-specific B cells and follicular helper T cells were found in vaccinated participants with chronic conditions (diabetes, renal disease) and were strongly associated with altered glycosylation of IgG and increased interleukin-18 levels in the plasma. These immune perturbations were also found in non-Indigenous people with comorbidities, indicating that they were related to comorbidities rather than ethnicity. However, our study is of a great importance to First Nations peoples who have disproportionate rates of chronic comorbidities and provides evidence of robust immune responses after COVID-19 vaccination in Indigenous people.

Abstract: Although the protective role of neutralizing antibodies against COVID-19 is well established, questions remain about the relative importance of cellular immunity. Using 6 pMHC multimers in a cohort with early and frequent sampling, we define the phenotype and kinetics of recalled and primary T cell responses following Delta or Omicron breakthrough infection in previously vaccinated individuals. Recall of spike-specific CD4+ T cells was rapid, with cellular proliferation and extensive activation evident as early as 1 day post symptom onset. Similarly, spike-specific CD8+ T cells were rapidly activated but showed variable degrees of expansion. The frequency of activated SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cells at baseline and peak inversely correlated with peak SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels in nasal swabs and accelerated viral clearance. Our study demonstrates that a rapid and extensive recall of memory T cell populations occurs early after breakthrough infection and suggests that CD8+ T cells contribute to the control of viral replication in breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Abstract: We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

24. Societal stigma and mistreatment in healthcare among gender minority people: a cross-sectional study.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Gender minority (GM; individuals whose gender is not aligned with that traditionally associated with the sex that was assigned to them at birth) people have widely reported mistreatment in healthcare settings. Mistreatment is enacted by individuals within society who hold stigmatizing beliefs. However, the relationship between healthcare mistreatment and societal stigma (i.e., the degree to which society disapproves of GM people) is unclear and not measured consistently. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2,031 GM participants in The Population Research in Identity and Disparities for Equality (PRIDE) Studys 2019 Annual Questionnaire to determine whether societal stigma was associated with participants past-year reports of mistreatment (defined as denial of healthcare services and/or lower quality care) in medical or mental healthcare settings. We created a proxy measure of societal stigma by incorporating variables validated in existing literature. Participants reported whether they had experienced mistreatment in medical and mental health settings independently. RESULTS: Healthcare denial and/or lower quality care during the past year was reported by 18.8% of our sample for medical settings and 12.5% for mental health settings. We found no associations between the societal stigma variables and past-year reports of healthcare denial and/or lower quality care in medical or mental healthcare settings. CONCLUSIONS: Although a high proportion of GM people reported past-year healthcare mistreatment in both medical and mental health settings, mistreatment had no relationship with societal stigma. Factors other than societal stigma may be more important predictors of healthcare mistreatment, such as healthcare workers knowledge of and attitudes toward GM people. However, other measures of societal stigma, or different types of mistreatment, may show stronger associations. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us many things, among the most important of which is that vaccines are one of the cornerstones of public health that help make modern longevity possible. While several different vaccines have been successful at stemming the morbidity and mortality associated with various infectious diseases, many pathogens/diseases remain recalcitrant to the development of effective vaccination. Recent advances in vaccine technology, immunology, structural biology, and other fields may yet yield insight that will address these diseases; they may also help improve societies' preparedness for future pandemics. On June 1-4, 2022, experts in vaccinology from academia, industry, and government convened for the Keystone symposium "Progress in Vaccine Development for Infectious Diseases" to discuss state-of-the-art technologies, recent advancements in understanding vaccine-mediated immunity, and new aspects of antigen design to aid vaccine effectiveness.

Mistreatment is enacted by individuals within society who hold stigmatizing beliefs. However, the relationship between healthcare mistreatment and societal stigma (i.e., the degree to which society disapproves of GM people) is unclear and not measured consistently. Methods We analyzed data from 2,031 GM participants in The Population Research in Identity and Disparities for Equality (PRIDE) Study's 2019 Annual Questionnaire to determine whether societal stigma was associated with participants' past-year reports of mistreatment (defined as denial of healthcare services and/or lower quality care) in medical or mental healthcare settings. We created a proxy measure of societal stigma by incorporating variables validated in existing literature. Participants reported whether they had experienced mistreatment in medical and mental health settings independently. Results Healthcare denial and/or lower quality care during the past year was reported by 18.8% of our sample for medical settings and 12.5% for mental health settings. We found no associations between the societal stigma variables and past-year reports of healthcare denial and/or lower quality care in medical or mental healthcare settings. Conclusions Although a high proportion of GM people reported past-year healthcare mistreatment in both medical and mental health settings, mistreatment had no relationship with societal stigma. Factors other than societal stigma may be more important predictors of healthcare mistreatment, such as healthcare workers' knowledge of and attitudes toward GM people. However, other measures of societal stigma, or different types of mistreatment, may show stronger associations. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Although the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) is one of the most widely used self-report assessments of eating disorder symptoms, evidence indicates potential limitations with its original factor structure and associated psychometric properties in a variety of populations, including sexual minority populations. The aims of the current investigation were to explore several previously published EDE-Q factor structures and to examine internal consistency and measurement invariance of the best-fitting EDE-Q model in a large community sample of cisgender gay men and cisgender lesbian women. METHODS: Data were drawn from 1624 adults (1060 cisgender gay men, 564 cisgender lesbian women) who participated in The PRIDE Study, a large-scale longitudinal cohort study of sexual and gender minorities from the United States. A series of confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) were conducted to explore the fit of eight proposed EDE-Q models; internal consistency (Cronbachs alphas, Omega coefficients) and measurement invariance (multi-group CFA) were subsequently evaluated. RESULTS: A brief seven-item, three-factor (dietary restraint, shape/weight overvaluation, body dissatisfaction) model of the EDE-Q from Grilo et al. (Obes Surg. 23:657-662, 2013), consistently evidenced the best fit across cisgender gay men and lesbian women. The internal consistencies of the three subscales were adequate in both groups, and measurement invariance across the groups was supported. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these findings support the use of the seven-item, three-factor version of the EDE-Q for assessing eating disorder symptomatology in cisgender gay men and lesbian women. Future studies can confirm the current findings in focused examinations of the seven-item, three-factor EDE-Q in diverse sexual minority samples across race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and age ranges.

Abstract: Purpose: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people are at greater risk for substance use than heterosexual and cisgender people, but most prior work is limited by cross sectional analyses or the examination of single substance use. This study examined substance use over time among SGM people to identify patterns of polysubstance use at the intersection of sex and gender. Method: Data were collected annually over four years from SGM respondents (n=11,822) in The PRIDE Study. Differences in substance use patterns (any prior 30-day use of 15 substances) by gender subgroup were examined with latent class analysis, and multinomial regression models tested relationships between gender subgroup and substance use. Results: Eight classes of substance use were observed. The three most common patterns were low substance use (49%), heavy episodic alcohol use (≥5 5 alcoholic drinks on one occasion) with some cannabis and tobacco use (14%), and cannabis use with some tobacco and declining heavy episodic alcohol use (13%). Differences observed included lower odds of patterns defined by heavy episodic alcohol use with some cannabis and tobacco use in all gender subgroups relative to cisgender men and persons with low substance use (odds ratios [ORs] 0.26-0.60). Gender expansive people assigned female at birth, gender expansive people assigned male at birth, and transgender men had greater odds of reporting cannabis use with small percentages of heavy episodic alcohol and tobacco use (ORs 1.41-1.60). Conclusion: This study suggests there are unique patterns of polysubstance use over time among gender subgroups of SGM people.

30. Active Social Media Use and Health Indicators among Sexual and Gender Minority Adults

Abstract: Purpose: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals may receive social support through using social media actively (i.e., posting, interacting). This study examined associations between active social media use, social support, and health indicators in a large sample of SGM adults in the United States. Methods: Data were derived from the 2017 wave of The PRIDE Study, a national cohort study of SGM health. SGM-identified adults reporting social media use (N=5,995) completed measures of active social media use, social support, depressive symptoms, cigarette smoking, hazardous drinking, sleep, and physical activity. Regression models examined main and interactive effects of active social media use and social support on health indicators. Results: The sample reported a moderate level of active social media use (mean [M]=3.2[1.0], scale=1-5) and relatively high social support (M=16.7[3.3], scale=4-20); 31.8% reported moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms. Participants with greater active social media use were more likely to experience depressive symptoms (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=1.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.10, 1.26]), cigarette smoking (AOR=1.11, 95% CI[1.01, 1.22]), insufficient sleep (AOR=1.13, 95% CI[1.06, 1.21]), and physical inactivity (AOR=1.09, 95% CI[1.02, 1.15]) than those with less active social media use. Active social media use did not significantly interact with social support to predict any health indicators (p-values>.159). Conclusion: Among SGM adults, active social media use was associated with several negative health indicators. Active social media use may increase health risks, or SGM adults with poor health may use social media actively to maintain social connections. Moderate active social media use may be compatible with health.

Abstract: Purpose: Minority stress is related to short-term increases in substance use. This study identified patterns of cannabis use over four years among sexual and gender minority (SGM) people. We examined if cannabis use trajectories related to baseline minority stressors, and if differences by gender persisted after accounting for minority stress. Procedures: Participants were 11,813 SGM people within The PRIDE Study who provided information about risk for cannabis use disorder via the National Institute on Drug Abuse Modified Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test annually for up to four years. Latent class growth curve mixture models identified five cannabis use trajectories: ‘low or no risk’, ‘low moderate risk’, ‘high moderate risk’, ‘steep risk increase’, and ‘highest risk’. Results: Participants (n = 5,673) who reported past-year discrimination and/or victimization at baseline had greater odds of membership in any cannabis risk category compared to the ‘low risk’ category (odds ratios [OR] 1.17-1.33). Internalized stigma was related to ‘high moderate’ and ‘highest risk’ cannabis use over time (ORs 1.27-1.38). After accounting for minority stress, gender expansive people and transgender men had higher odds than cisgender men to have ‘low moderate risk’ (ORs 1.61, 1.67) or ‘high moderate risk’ (ORs 2.09, 1.99). Transgender men had higher odds of having ‘highest risk’ (OR 2.36) cannabis use compared to the ‘low or no risk’ category. Conclusions: Minority stress at baseline is related to prospective cannabis use risk trajectories, and gender expansive people and transgender men have greater cannabis use risk even after accounting for minority stress.

Abstract: Objectives: To document factors affecting willingness to engage in biospecimen donation for substance use research among Black and Hispanic/Latinx sexual and gender minority (SGM) people. Methods: From May to July 2022, we interviewed 22 Black and Hispanic/Latinx SGM people from The PRIDE Study, a cohort of SGM people in the United States and its territories, using Zoom software. Fourteen participants were sexual minority people, and eight participants were gender minority people. We took an inductive, collaborative qualitative analytic approach to identify themes. Results: Themes included: (1) community benefits, (2) personal benefits, (3) community risk, (4) personal risks, (5) convenience, (6) trustworthiness of the research team, (7) perceived value in donating, and (8) normalization of biospecimen collection. Participants were generally motivated to engage in biospecimen donation for altruistic purposes. The most cited concerns were related to data security, misuse, and privacy. Conclusions: Researchers must be proactive in building trust with Black and Hispanic/Latinx communities to increase engagement, diversify biospecimen repositories and reduce health inequities. Future research involving biospecimens should provide biospecimen education during the consent process and prioritize participant convenience.

Abstract: Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, aromantic and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities in the United States experience higher rates of alcohol use than the general population. While experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) is thought to lead to increased alcohol use in LGBTQIA+ people, little research has investigated the temporal relationship between IPV and alcohol use in this population. Methods: Data from the two years of The Population Research in Identity and Disparities for Equality Study (The PRIDE Study) longitudinal cohort (n=3,783) were included. Overall IPV and three sub-types (physical, sexual, and emotional), measured in 2021 using the extended Hurt, Insult, Threaten, Scream (E-HITS) screening tool, was examined as a predictor of respondents’ Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score in 2022 using multivariable linear regression to assess linear and quadratic associations. Models were adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics and history of alcohol use disorder. Results: One-quarter (24.7%) of respondents reported experiencing past-year IPV in 2021. The mean AUDIT score in 2022 was 3.52 (SD = 4.13). In adjusted models, both linear (b: 0.32, 95% CI: 0.19, 0.45) and quadratic (b: -0.03, 95% CI: -0.05, -0.01) terms for overall IPV were significantly associated with next-year AUDIT score. These patterns were mirrored in each IPV sub-type and were not attenuated when restricted to those currently in a relationship. Conclusions: These results provide evidence of a temporal relationship between IPV and alcohol use in LGBTQIA+ communities, suggesting that efforts to prevent and mitigate IPV may help reduce alcohol use disparities in this population.

Abstract: Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) communities are underrepresented in biomedical studies, highlighting the importance of developing biospecimen collection protocols aimed at engaging SGM participants. We aimed to learn more about SGM participants’ experiences with a remote (i.e., not performed at a central location) biospecimen collection study pioneered by The PRIDE Study, a cohort study of SGM adults residing in the United States and its territories. Methods: We collected and analyzed feedback from 112 SGM participants following blood donation for a parent study investigating the relationship between minority stress, substance use, and epigenetic markers of substance use and minority stress. We used an inductive and collaborative approach to qualitative analysis and identified major themes and areas for protocol improvement. Results: Major themes among participant feedback were: (1) communication with the research team, (2) convenience of donation, (3) interactions with clinical laboratory staff, and (4) anonymity and privacy. Most participants indicated that they experienced little to no problems during the donation process and expressed approval for the clarity and transparency of the informed consent process, the ease of communication with the research team, and the measures taken to protect participant confidentiality during their appointment. The most common challenges encountered by participants related to the inconvenience of handling and transporting study materials to the clinical laboratory site and clinical laboratory staff’s unfamiliarity with the study protocol. Some participants indicated a preference for more elements of the study protocol (e.g., transporting collection materials) to be left to the responsibility of the research team. Conclusions: Our study reflects successful remote biospecimen collection among SGM participants on a national scale. 36. The Design and Technology Development of the JUNO Central Detector

Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large scale neutrino experiment with multiple physics goals including deter mining the neutrino mass hierarchy, the accurate measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters, the neutrino detection from the super nova, the Sun, and the Earth, etc. JUNO puts forward physically and technologically stringent requirements for its central detector (CD), including a large volume and target mass (20 kt liquid scintillator, LS), a high energy resolution (3% at 1 MeV), a high light transmittance, the largest possible photomultiplier (PMT) coverage, the lowest possible radioactive background, etc. The CD design, using a spherical acrylic vessel with a diameter of 35.4 m to contain the LS and a stainless steel structure to support the acrylic vessel and PMTs, was chosen and optimized. The acrylic vessel and the stainless steel structure will be immersed in pure water to shield the radioactive back ground and bear great buoyancy. The challenging requirements of the acrylic sphere have been achieved, such as a low intrinsic radioactivity and high transmittance of the manufactured acrylic panels, the tensile and compressive acrylic node design with embedded stainless steel pad, one-time polymerization for multiple bonding lines. Moreover, several technical challenges of the stainless steel structure have been solved: the production of low radioactivity stainless steel material, the deformation and precision control during production and assembly, the usage of high strength stainless steel rivet bolt and of high friction efficient linkage plate. Finally, the design of the ancillary equipment like the LS filling, overflowing and circulating system was done.

Abstract: We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, matches the publised version

Abstract: We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, matches the publised version

39. A rapid method for preliminary identification of subthreshold strongly lensed counterparts to superthreshold gravitational-wave events

Abstract: Gravitational waves (GWs) from stellar-mass compact binary coalescences (CBCs) are expected to be strongly lensed when encountering large agglomerations of matter, such as galaxies or clusters. Searches for strongly lensed GWs have been conducted using data from the first three observing runs of the LIGO-Virgo GW detector network. Although no confirmed detections have been reported, interesting candidate lensed pairs have been identified. In this work, we delineate a preliminary analysis that rapidly identifies pairs to be further analyzed by more sophisticated Bayesian parameter estimation (PE) methods. The analysis relies on the Gaussian/Fisher approximation to the likelihood and compares the corresponding approximate posteriors on the chirp masses of the candidate pair. It additionally cross-correlates the rapidly produced localization sky areas (constructed by Bayestar sky-localization software). The analysis was used to identify pairs involving counterparts from targeted sub-threshold searches to confidently detected super-threshold CBC events. The most significant candidate ``super-sub'' pair deemed by this analysis was subsequently found, by more sophisticated and detailed joint-PE analyses, to be among the more significant candidate pairs, but not sufficiently significant to suggest the observation of a lensed event [1]., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: Unveiling the true nature of Dark Matter (DM), which manifests itself only through gravity, is one of the principal quests in physics. Leading candidates for DM are weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) or ultralight bosons (axions), at opposite extremes in mass scales, that have been postulated by competing theories to solve deficiencies in the Standard Model of particle physics. Whereas DM WIMPs behave like discrete particles ($\varrho$DM), quantum interference between DM axions is manifested as waves ($\psi$DM). Here, we show that gravitational lensing leaves signatures in multiply-lensed images of background galaxies that reveal whether the foreground lensing galaxy inhabits a $\varrho$DM or $\psi$DM halo. Whereas $\varrho$DM lens models leave well documented anomalies between the predicted and observed brightnesses and positions of multiply-lensed images, $\psi$DM lens models correctly predict the level of anomalies left over by $\varrho$DM lens models. More challengingly, when subjected to a battery of tests for reproducing the quadruply-lensed triplet images in the system HS 0810+2554, $\psi$DM is able to reproduce all aspects of this system whereas $\varrho$DM often fails. The ability of $\psi$DM to resolve lensing anomalies even in demanding cases like HS 0810+2554, together with its success in reproducing other astrophysical observations, tilt the balance toward new physics invoking axions., Comment: Updated with accepted version. 41. Societal stigma and mistreatment in healthcare among gender minority people : a cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background Gender minority (GM; individuals whose gender is not aligned with that traditionally associated with the sex that was assigned to them at birth) people have widely reported mistreatment in healthcare settings. Mistreatment is enacted by individuals within society who hold stigmatizing beliefs. However, the relationship between healthcare mistreatment and societal stigma (i.e., the degree to which society disapproves of GM people) is unclear and not measured consistently. Methods We analyzed data from 2,031 GM participants in The Population Research in Identity and Disparities for Equality (PRIDE) Study's 2019 Annual Questionnaire to determine whether societal stigma was associated with participants' past-year reports of mistreatment (defined as denial of healthcare services and/or lower quality care) in medical or mental healthcare settings. We created a proxy measure of societal stigma by incorporating variables validated in existing literature. Participants reported whether they had experienced mistreatment in medical and mental health settings independently. Results Healthcare denial and/or lower quality care during the past year was reported by 18.8% of our sample for medical settings and 12.5% for mental health settings. We found no associations between the societal stigma variables and past-year reports of healthcare denial and/or lower quality care in medical or mental healthcare settings. Conclusions Although a high proportion of GM people reported past-year healthcare mistreatment in both medical and mental health settings, mistreatment had no relationship with societal stigma. Factors other than societal stigma may be more important predictors of healthcare mistreatment, such as healthcare workers' knowledge of and attitudes toward GM people. However, other measures of societal stigma, or different types of mistreatment, may show stronger associations. Identifying key factors that contribute to mistreatment can serve as targets for intervention

While novel insights of neuroanatomy and biology of the eyes, particularly the ocular surface, have been provided by corneal confocal microscopy, some debatable elements observed using this technique remain and these are explored in this Mini Review. Potential improvements in imaging methodology and instrumentation are also suggested.

44. Hessian Based Smoothing Splines for Manifold Learning

Abstract: We propose a multidimensional smoothing spline algorithm in the context of manifold learning. We generalize the bending energy penalty of thin-plate splines to a quadratic form on the Sobolev space of a flat manifold, based on the Frobenius norm of the Hessian matrix. This leads to a natural definition of smoothing splines on manifolds, which minimizes square error while optimizing a global curvature penalty. The existence and uniqueness of the solution is shown by applying the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. The minimizer is expressed as a combination of Green's functions for the biharmonic operator, and 'linear' functions of everywhere vanishing Hessian. Furthermore, we utilize the Hessian estimation procedure from the Hessian Eigenmaps algorithm to approximate the spline loss when the true manifold is unknown. This yields a particularly simple quadratic optimization algorithm for smoothing response values without needing to fit the underlying manifold. Abstract: The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Abstract: XDSGUI is a lightweight graphical user interface (GUI) for the XDS, SHELX and ARCIMBOLDO program packages that serves both novice and experienced users in obtaining optimal processing and phasing results for X-ray, neutron and electron diffraction data. The design of the program enables data processing and phasing without command line usage, and supports advanced command flows in a simple user-modifiable and user-extensible way. The GUI supplies graphical information based on the tabular log output of the programs, which is more intuitive, comprehensible and efficient than text output can be.

Abstract: BackgroundAtopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease with complex pathogenesis for which the cellular and molecular crosstalk in AD skin has not been fully understood.MethodsSkin tissues examined for spatial gene expression were derived from the upper arm of 6 healthy control (HC) donors and 7 AD patients (lesion and nonlesion). We performed spatial transcriptomics sequencing to characterize the cellular infiltrate in lesional skin. For single‐cell analysis, we analyzed the single‐cell data from suction blister material from AD lesions and HC skin at the antecubital fossa skin (4 ADs and 5 HCs) and full‐thickness skin biopsies (4 ADs and 2 HCs). The multiple proximity extension assays were performed in the serum samples from 36 AD patients and 28 HCs.ResultsThe single‐cell analysis identified unique clusters of fibroblasts, dendritic cells, and macrophages in the lesional AD skin. Spatial transcriptomics analysis showed the upregulation of COL6A5, COL4A1, TNC, and CCL19 in COL18A1‐expressing fibroblasts in the leukocyte‐infiltrated areas in AD skin. CCR7‐expressing dendritic cells (DCs) showed a similar distribution in the lesions. Additionally, M2 macrophages expressed CCL13 and CCL18 in this area. Ligand–receptor interaction analysis of the spatial transcriptome identified neighboring infiltration and interaction between activated COL18A1‐expressing fibroblasts, CCL13‐ and CCL18‐expressing M2 macrophages, CCR7‐ and LAMP3‐expressing DCs, and T cells. As observed in skin lesions, serum levels of TNC and CCL18 were significantly elevated in AD, and correlated with clinical disease severity.ConclusionIn this study, we show the unknown cellular crosstalk in leukocyte‐infiltrated area in lesional skin. Our findings provide a comprehensive in‐depth knowledge of the nature of AD skin lesions to guide the development of better treatments.

Abstract: Background: The increased prevalence of many chronic inflammatory diseases linked to gut epithelial barrier leakiness has prompted us to investigate the role of extensive use of dishwasher detergents, among other factors. Objective: We sought to investigate the effects of professional and household dishwashers, and rinse agents, on cytotoxicity, barrier function, transcriptome, and protein expression in gastrointestinal epithelial cells. Methods: Enterocytic liquid-liquid interfaces were established on permeable supports, and direct cellular cytotoxicity, transepithelial electrical resistance, paracellular flux, immunofluorescence staining, RNA-sequencing transcriptome, and targeted proteomics were performed. Results: The observed detergent toxicity was attributed to exposure to rinse aid in a dose-dependent manner up to 1:20,000 v/v dilution. A disrupted epithelial barrier, particularly by rinse aid, was observed in liquid-liquid interface cultures, organoids, and gut-on-a-chip, demonstrating decreased transepithelial electrical resistance, increased paracellular flux, and irregular and heterogeneous tight junction immunostaining. When individual components of the rinse aid were investigated separately, alcohol ethoxylates elicited a strong toxic and barrier-damaging effect. RNA-sequencing transcriptome and proteomics data revealed upregulation in cell death, signaling and communication, development, metabolism, proliferation, and immune and inflammatory responses of epithelial cells. Interestingly, detergent residue from professional dishwashers demonstrated the remnant of a significant amount of cytotoxic and epithelial barrier-damaging rinse aid remaining on washed and ready-to-use dishware. Conclusions: The expression of genes involved in cell survival, epithelial barrier, cytokine signaling, and metabolism was altered by rinse aid in concentrations used in professional dishwashers. Abstract: We present the morphological parameters and global properties of dust-obscured star formation in typical star-forming galaxies at z=4-6. Among 26 galaxies composed of 20 galaxies observed by the Cycle-8 ALMA Large Program, CRISTAL, and six galaxies from archival data, we have individually detected rest-frame 158$\mu$m dust continuum emission from 19 galaxies, nine of which are reported for the first time. The derived far-infrared luminosities are in the range $\log_{10} L_{\rm IR}\,[L_{\odot}]=$10.9-12.4, an order of magnitude lower than previously detected massive dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). The average relationship between the fraction of dust-obscured star formation ($f_{\rm obs}$) and the stellar mass is consistent with previous results at z=4-6 in a mass range of $\log_{10} M_{\ast}\,[M_{\odot}]\sim$9.5-11.0 and show potential evolution from z=6-9. The individual $f_{\rm obs}$ exhibits a significant diversity, and it shows a correlation with the spatial offset between the dust and the UV continuum, suggesting the inhomogeneous dust reddening may cause the source-to-source scatter in $f_{\rm obs}$. The effective radii of the dust emission are on average $\sim$1.5 kpc and are $\sim2$ times more extended than the rest-frame UV. The infrared surface densities of these galaxies ($\Sigma_{\rm IR}\sim2.0\times10^{10}\,L_{\odot}\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$) are one order of magnitude lower than those of DSFGs that host compact central starbursts. On the basis of the comparable contribution of dust-obscured and dust-unobscured star formation along with their similar spatial extent, we suggest that typical star-forming galaxies at z=4-6 form stars throughout the entirety of their disks.

50. TESLA-X: An effective method to search for sub-threshold lensed gravitational waves with a targeted population model

Abstract: Strong gravitational lensing can produce copies of gravitational-wave signals from the same source with the same waveform morphologies but different amplitudes and arrival times. Some of these strongly-lensed gravitational-wave signals can be demagnified and become sub-threshold. We present TESLA-X, an enhanced approach to the original GstLAL-based TargetEd Subthreshold Lensing seArch (TESLA) method, for improving the detection efficiency of these potential sub-threshold lensed signals. TESLA-X utilizes lensed injections to generate a targeted population model and a targeted template bank. We compare the performance of a full template bank search, TESLA, and TESLA-X methods via a simulation campaign, and demonstrate the performance of TESLA-X in recovering lensed injections, particularly targeting a mock event. Our results show that the TESLA-X method achieves a maximum of $\sim 20\%$ higher search sensitivity compared to the TESLA method within the sub-threshold regime, presenting a step towards detecting the first lensed gravitational wave. TESLA-X will be employed for the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA's collaboration-wide analysis to search for lensing signatures in the fourth observing run.
