1. Energy of starting up to speed of DC train

Abstract: In the last 20 ... 25 years the volume of recuperated electric energy is less than 2% of the consumed by traction, while it is possible to return about 10 ... 15%. The main reason is unsatisfactory and inefficient usage of recuperated and transmitted energy to the power supply system. The paper proposes to solve this problem and induce the efficiency and the degree of recuperated energy of DC multiple unit trains by the usage of on-board supercapacitive storage system. The methods of the electric traction theory and the theory of pulse electrical engineering are used for the problem solving. The developed methodology allows to calculate the energy, which is required to starting up the multiple unit train EPL2T to some speed 10 ... 80 km/h after its stopping. Furthermore, the capacity of the on-board storage is calculated in two cases of storing recuperated energy. The novelty of the paper is the new method for estimating energy, which is required to starting up (after the stopping) the train to a certain speed. The analytical expression of the capacity of the on-board storage system was achieved and calculated for the previously estimated energy. For the first time it was found that the energy, which was saved by the on-board supercapacitive storage system, is sufficient to start up the train to some speed and reach the characteristic of full field of the traction motors. The proposed autonomous mode of recuperative braking allows, at first, to increase significantly the efficiency of energy recovery, and secondly, to reduce the weight and size parameters of on-board storage supercapacitors.

3. THE ENERGY SPECTRA OF RANDOM PROCESSES OF TRACTION VOLTAGES AND CURRENTS OF ELECTRIC TRANSPORT

Abstract: Spectral analysis of traction voltages and currents are the basis for assessing energy electromagnetic processes in systems of electric traction, in particular, DC. The latter is due to the fact that the DC system is not in consequence of nonstationary random character of change of traction voltage and current. Nonperiodic stochastic nature of the change of voltage and current calls for study of their spectral composition using probabilistic methods based on spectral correlation theory of random processes. The theoretical assumptions and the relations of connection of the energy spectrum of a random process with his correlating function are set out. The results of the numerical calculations of the spectra of traction voltages and currents actually operating electrical subsystems transport are given; they are: feeder voltage at the traction substation; currents in modes of traction and recuperation of electric locomotives in accordance with DE 1 and VL 8; the voltage on the current collector of the city tram. It is established that energy spectra of random processes traction and recuperative voltages and currents are probabilistic in nature, depending on technological factors of the system, and the energy of the random process is numerically greater in traction mode than in the regenerative braking modes

Abstract: Мета. Отримати вирази для обчислення спектральної характеристики обмеженої за часом частини імпульсу перехідної величини. Методика. В роботі використано математичний апарат перетворення Фур’є. Результати. Введено поняття поточного і миттєвого спектрів для аналізу детермінованих функцій електричних величин системи тягового електропостачання постійного струму в аварійних режимах її роботи. Практичне значення. Запропоновані вирази для обчислення поточного та миттєвого спектрів обмеженої за часом частини імпульсу перехідної величини дозволяють отримати нові ознаки, на яких може базуватися релейний захист систем тягового електропостачання., Цель. Получение выражений для вычисления спектральной характеристики ограниченной во времени части импульса переходной величины. Методика. В работе использовано математический аппарат преобразования Фурье. Результаты. Введено понятие текущего и мгновенного спектров для анализа детерминированных функций электрических величин системы тягового электроснабжения постоянного тока в аварийных режимах ее работы. Практическое значение. Предложенные выражения для вычисления текущего и мгновенного спектров ограниченной во времени части импульса переходной величины позволяют получить новые признаки, на которых может основываться релейная защита систем тягового электроснабжения., Objective. Acquisition of expressions for calculating of spectral characteristics of limited in time part of impulse of transient value. Methodology. Mathematical apparatus of Fourier transform used in paper. Results. Paper introduces conceptions of current and instantaneous spectrum for analysis of determined functions of electrical values of traction electric supply DC system at emergency modes. Practical value. Introduced expressions for calculating of current and instantaneous spectrum of limited in time part of impulse of transient value allows obtaining new indicators, on which the relay protection of traction electric supply system can be based on.

5. Statistic, probabilistic, correlation and spectral analyses of regenerative braking current of dc electric rolling stock

Abstract: Purpose. Defining and analysis of the probabilistic and spectral characteristics of random current in regenerative braking mode of DC electric rolling stock are observed in this paper. Methodology. The elements and methods of the probability theory (particularly the theory of stationary and non-stationary processes) and methods of the sampling theory are used for processing of the regenerated current data arrays by PC. Findings. The regenerated current records are obtained from the locomotives and trains in Ukraine railways and trams in Poland. It was established that the current has uninterrupted and the jumping variations in time (especially in trams). For the random current in the regenerative braking mode the functions of mathematical expectation, dispersion and standard deviation are calculated. Histograms, probabilistic characteristics and correlation functions are calculated and plotted down for this current too. It was established that the current of the regenerative braking mode can be considered like the stationary and non-ergodic process. The spectral analysis of these records and “tail part” of the correlation function found weak periodical (or low-frequency) components which are known like an interharmonic. Originality. Firstly, the theory of non-stationary random processes was adapted for the analysis of the recuperated current which has uninterrupted and the jumping variations in time. Secondly, the presence of interharmonics in the stochastic process of regenerated current was defined for the first time. And finally, the patterns of temporal changes of the correlation current function are defined too. This allows to reasonably apply the correlation functions method in the identification of the electric traction system devices. Practical value. The results of probabilistic and statistic analysis of the recuperated current allow to estimate the quality of recovered energy and energy quality indices of electric rolling stock in the regenerative braking

6. Electrodynamics of transmission and losses of power in the devices of electric traction systems

Abstract: Purpose. Theoretical justification of the "field" approach (based on electromagnetic field) to the transmission and losses of power in the devices of traction power supply systems and electric rolling stock. Methodology. The methods of electromagnetic field theory and, in particular, the theory and practice of electromagnetic energy transmission based on the concept of the Poynting vector and elements of the theory of propagation, reflection and refraction of plane electromagnetic waves were used. Findings. Theoretical studies of electromagnetic energy transmission from the traction substation to the electric rolling stock through dielectric (air) surrounding traction network: between the contact wire and the rail were carried out. It is proposed strategic designing "squat" (low) types of electric rolling stock. The components of electric energy flow through the roof of electric rolling stock and its frontal part of the body were estimated. This allows reliable etimating active power losses in electric traction system. To compensate the reactive power consumed by electric rolling stock, which is conditioned by standing waves, it is proposed (for extinction of the the last) to develop and put in front of electric rolling stock the layer of particular environment with the necessary parameters. Originality. The "field" principle of the power transmission analysis and its losses arising in electric traction system was first proposed. The laws of motion of electromagnetic energy flows through the roof and the frontal part of the body of electric rolling stock were established. Practical value. An expression of the absolute value of the Poynting vector in the points of dielectric (air) between the contact wire and the rail was obtained. 7. The method of the correlation and dispersion defining of the total power components in the electric transport devices

Abstract: Purpose. Development and theoretical ground of the analytical method for the calculation of the active, reactive and total powers in the electric traction devices, taking into consideration the non-stationary character of the stochastic processes change of the voltage and current in the elements of these systems. Methodology. The mathematical methods of the random processes theory and the “discrete electrical engineering” methods are used for solving the main problem of this paper. Findings. The Method of the Correlation and Dispersion is developed for definition of the active power, the reactive power by Fryse and the total power of the devices in the elements of the electric traction system of the main-line railways. The method is based on the well-known concepts of auto- and inter-correlation functions of the random processes which govern the feeder voltages and the currents in the traction power supply subsystem as well as the currents and voltages of the electric rolling stock. The method developed in this paper allows estimating the powers of both stationary and non-stationary processes. This method can be used for the analysis of both the traction mode and the regenerative braking mode of the electric rolling stock. The total power components were calculated for the one of the feeder areas of the Prydniprovsk railway using this method. The results show the significant flow of the reactive power in the traction power supply system. This fact is also confirmed by the high values of the reactive power coefficient. Originality. Scientific novelty of the research is consisted in the following. Firstly, for defining the active and reactive powers in elements of the traction power supply system the new method (the Method of Correlation and Dispersion) is created and grounded. Some measures on reducing its consumption by the DC electric rolling stock have been suggested.

Abstract: The two most recent and precise measurements of the charged kaon mass use X-rays from kaonic atoms and report uncertainties of 14 and 22 ppm yet differ from each other by 122 ppm. We describe the possibility of an independent mass measurement using the measurement of Cherenkov light from a narrow-band beam of kaons, pions, and protons. This technique was demonstrated using data taken opportunistically by the Main Injector Particle Production experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory which recorded beams of protons, kaons, and pions ranging in momentum from +37 to +63 GeV/c. The measured value is 491.3 +/- 1.7 MeV/c(2), which is within 1.4 sigma of the world average. An improvement of two orders of magnitude in precision would make this technique useful for resolving the ambiguity in the X-ray data and may be achievable in a dedicated experiment. Abstract: We have measured cross sections for forward neutron production from a variety of targets using proton beams from the Fermilab Main Injector. Measurements were performed for proton beam momenta of 58 GeV/c, 84 GeV/c, and 120 GeV/c. The cross section dependence on the atomic weight (A) of the targets was found to vary as $A^(alpha)$ where $\alpha$ is $0.46\pm0.06$ for a beam momentum of 58 GeV/c and 0.54$\pm$0.05 for 120 GeV/c. The cross sections show reasonable agreement with FLUKA and DPMJET Monte Carlos. Comparisons have also been made with the LAQGSM Monte Carlo., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D. Abstract: The two most recent and precise measurements of the charged kaon mass use X-rays from kaonic atoms and report uncertainties of 14 ppm and 22 ppm yet differ from each other by 122 ppm. We describe the possibility of an independent mass measurement using the measurement of Cherenkov light from a narrow-band beam of kaons, pions, and protons. This technique was demonstrated using data taken opportunistically by the Main Injector Particle Production experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory which recorded beams of protons, kaons, and pions ranging in momentum from +37 GeV/c to +63 GeV/c. The measured value is 491.3 +/- 1.7 MeV/c^2, which is within 1.4 sigma of the world average. An improvement of two orders of magnitude in precision would make this technique useful for resolving the ambiguity in the X-ray data and may be achievable in a dedicated experiment., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment uses an accelerator-produced neutrino beam to perform precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters in the "atmospheric neutrino" sector associated with muon neutrino disappearance. This long-baseline experiment measures neutrino interactions in Fermilab's NuMI neutrino beam with a near detector at Fermilab and again 735 km downstream with a far detector in the Soudan Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. The two detectors are magnetized steel-scintillator tracking calorimeters. They are designed to be as similar as possible in order to ensure that differences in detector response have minimal impact on the comparisons of event rates, energy spectra and topologies that are essential to MINOS measurements of oscillation parameters. The design, construction, calibration and performance of the far and near detectors are described in this paper. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The article describes results of experimental research of the coupling strength of rail rolling stock with a guaranteed tightness of the journal-box unit, the internal surface of whose internal rings of bearings was restored by electrolytic zinc-plating on the impulse-reverse currents. The comparative analysis has been conducted of structure of the restored layer and the strength of immobile couplings, whose rings were restored with the use of the proposed technology with those restored on a direct current and those not restored at all.

Abstract: This Letter reports results from the MINOS experiment based on its initial exposure to neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. The rates and energy spectra of charged current nu(mu) interactions are compared in two detectors located along the beam axis at distances of 1 and 735 km. With 1.27x10(20) 120 GeV protons incident on the NuMI target, 215 events with energies below 30 GeV are observed at the Far Detector, compared to an expectation of 336 +/- 14 events. The data are consistent with nu(mu) disappearance via oscillations with vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar=2.74(-0.26)(+0.44)x10(-3) eV(2) and sin(2)(2 theta(23))> 0.87 (68% C.L.).

Abstract: The complete 5.4 kton MINOS far detector has been taking data since the beginning of August 2003 at a depth of 2070 meters water-equivalent in the Soudan mine, Minnesota. This paper presents the first MINOS observations of nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu) charged-current atmospheric neutrino interactions based on an exposure of 418 days. The ratio of upward- to downward-going events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation in the absence of neutrino oscillations, giving R-up/down(data)/R-up/down(MC)=0.62(-0.14)(+0.19)(stat.)+/- 0.02(sys.). An extended maximum likelihood analysis of the observed L/E distributions excludes the null hypothesis of no neutrino oscillations at the 98% confidence level. Using the curvature of the observed muons in the 1.3 T MINOS magnetic field nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu) interactions are separated. The ratio of (nu) over bar (mu) to nu(mu) events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation assuming neutrinos and antineutrinos oscillate in the same manner, giving R-(nu) over bar mu/nu(data)(mu)/R-(nu) over bar mu/nu(MC)(mu)=0.96(-0.27)(+0.38)(stat.)+/- 0.15(sys.), where the errors are the statistical and systematic uncertainties. Although the statistics are limited, this is the first direct observation of atmospheric neutrino interactions separately for nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu).

Abstract: With a multi-stage collimation system and magnetic iron spoilers in the tunnel, the background particle fluxes on the ILC detector can be substantially reduced. At the same time, beam-halo interactions with collimators and protective masks in the beam delivery system create fluxes of muons and other secondary particles which can still exceed the tolerable levels for some of the ILC sub-detectors. Abstract: The MINERvA experiment at Fermilab will use a fully-active scintillator based fine grained neutrino detector and the high rate NuMI neutrino beam. MINERvA will measure low energy neutrino interaction properties and cross sections to a new level of precision. These measurements will be critical input to present and future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments in this energy range.

Abstract: The article describes a mathematical model and the results of the probabilistic experimental and theoretical research of the degree of wear of the inside surface of bearing rings and wheelset neck of the VL series electric locomotives. A new technology of system tightness restoration has been proposed by means of electrolytic precipitation of zinc by impulse/reverse currents. The parameters of the current and the result of preliminary laboratory strength tests of the pressed connections have been provided.

Abstract: The authors have performed the probability forecasting of parametrical reliability of wheelset axlebox frames of electric locomotives according to criterion of wear. The law of distribution of the frame diameter value D at an arbitrary value of the locomotive run l has been found. A probability forecast of axlebox frames failure in different types of electric locomotives has been performed for the run value of up to TR 3, that is Lk-L0. The calculations have been made for new frames, restored by surfacing and iron plating.

Abstract: We describe several measurements using the decays (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) We find the ratio of partial widths, (Formula presented) to be (Formula presented) where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We observe no evidence for direct (Formula presented) violation, obtaining (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) In the limit of no (Formula presented) violation we measure the mixing parameter (Formula presented) by measuring the lifetime difference between (Formula presented) or (Formula presented) and the (Formula presented) neutral state, (Formula presented) We see no evidence for mixing.

Abstract: We have studied two-body charmless decays of the [Formula presented] meson into the final states [Formula presented], [Formula presented], [Formula presented], [Formula presented], [Formula presented], [Formula presented], and [Formula presented] using only decay modes with charged daughter particles. Using [Formula presented] [Formula presented] pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we place [Formula presented] confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions [Formula presented], depending on final state and polarization.

Abstract: We report on the observation of (Formula presented) decays. The branching ratio is (Formula presented) Interest in this particular mode was sparked by Ligeti, Luke and Wise who propose it as a way to check the validity of factorization tests in (Formula presented) decays.

Abstract: We have developed a new focusing system for conventional neutrino beams. The ``Hadron Hose'' is a wire located in the meson decay volume, downstream of the target and focusing horns. The wire is pulsed with high current to provide a toroidal magnetic field which continuously focuses mesons. The hose increases the neutrino event rate and reduces differences between near-field and far-field neutrino spectra for oscillation experiments. We have studied this device as part of the development of the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) project, but it might also be of use for other conventional neutrino beams., Comment: accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments and Methods

Abstract: We have searched a sample of 9.6×106 B¯B events for the flavor-changing neutral current decays B→Kℓ+ℓ- and B→K*(892)ℓ+ℓ-. We subject the latter decay to the requirement that the dilepton mass mℓℓ exceed 0.5 GeV. There is no indication of a signal. We obtain the 90% confidence level upper limits B(B→Kℓ+ℓ-) < 1.7×10-6 and B(B→K*(892)ℓ+ℓ-)mℓℓ>0.5Gev< 3.3×10-6. We also obtain an upper limit on the weighted average 0.65B B(B→Kℓ+ℓ-)+0.35B(B→K*(892)ℓ+ℓ-)mℓℓ>0.5Gev < 1.5×10-6. The weighted-average limit is only 50% above the standard model prediction.

The $\nu_{\mu}$'s are derived from a secondary $\pi^+$ beam that is allowed to decay within a 675 m decay tunnel. As part of this effort, we are developing a continuous toroidal magnetic focusing system, called the Hadronic Hose, to better steer the secondary beam.
