The preparation of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts with high activity, stability and low platinum loading has always been the focus of research. The single-atom platinum supported catalyst greatly improves the utilization of platinum, but the catalytic activity and selectivity are greatly affected by the platinum coordination environment, and the preparation of the material is difficult. Doping base metals to adjust the electronic structure of platinum is an effective strategy to improve catalyst performance. In this work, copper-platinum alloy nanoparticles were loaded on N-doped porous carbon via a targeted route guided by highly dispersed Cu atoms derived from MOF. The product C-ZIF-CuPt has high activity and high stability ORR, HER bifunctional catalytic performance, which is better than commercial Pt/C (20 wt%). The Pt activity in C-ZIF-CuPt is 4.4 times (ORR) and 6.7 times (HER) than Pt/C. Spectromicroscopic determinations unveiled that strong interactions between carbon carrier and the CuPt alloys contribute to the overall stabilities. DFT calculations show that Cu doping can increase the d-band center of Pt, reduce the ORR overpotential, and the activation energy barrier to water molecules, which is beneficial to ORR and HER catalysis. Under the same carrier conditions, the performance of sub-nano (single atoms, clusters) platinum-supported catalysts (C-ZIF-Cu-Pt) is inferior to C-ZIF-CuPt. This further shows that platinum alloying can effectively improve the performance of the catalyst.

Efficient, abundant and low‐cost catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are required for energy conversion and storage. In this study, a doping–etching route has been developed to access defect rich Fe–Co–Al (Fe–Co–Al‐AE) ternary hydroxide nanosheets for superior electrochemical oxygen evolution. After partial etching of Al, ultrathin Fe3Co2Al2‐AE electrocatalysts with a rich pore structure are obtained with a shift of the cobalt valence state towards higher valence (Co2+→Co3+), along with a substantial improvement in the catalytic performance. Fe3Co2Al2‐AE shows a notably lower overpotential of only 284 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and double the OER mass activity of the etching‐free Fe3Co2Al2 with an overpotential of 350 mV. Density functional theory shows the leaching of Al changes the rate‐determining step of the OER from conversion of *OOH into O2 on Fe3Co2Al2 to formation of OOH from *O on the Al‐defective catalysts. This work demonstrates an effective route to design and synthesize transition metal electrocatalysts and provides a promising alternative for the further development of oxygen evolution catalysts.

We introduce a retrieval algorithm to estimate lower tropospheric methane (CH4) concentrations from the surface to 1 km with uncertainty estimates using Hyperspectral Thermal Emission Spectrometer (HyTES) airborne radiance measurements. After resampling, retrievals have a spatial resolution of 6 × 6 m2. The total error from a single retrieval is approximately 20 %, with the uncertainties determined primarily by noise and spectral interferences from air temperature, surface emissivity, and atmospheric water vapor. We demonstrate retrievals for a HyTES flight line over storage tanks near Kern River Oil Field (KROF), Kern County, California, and find an extended plume structure in the set of observations with elevated methane concentrations (3.0 ± 0.6 to 6.0 ± 1.2 ppm), well above mean concentrations (1.8 ± 0.4 ppm) observed for this scene. With typically a 20 % estimated uncertainty, plume enhancements with more than 1 ppm are distinguishable from the background values with its uncertainty. HyTES retrievals are consistent with simultaneous airborne and ground-based in situ CH4 mole fraction measurements within the reported accuracy of approximately 0.2 ppm (or ∼8 %), due to retrieval interferences related to air temperature, emissivity, and H2O.

The primary sources and sinks of OCS are very likely in a steady state because there is no significant observed trend or interannual variability in atmospheric OCS measurements. However, the magnitude and spatial distribution of the dominant ocean source are highly uncertain due to the lack of observations. In particular, estimates of the oceanic fluxes range from approximately 280 Gg S yr-1 to greater than 800 Gg S yr-1, with the larger flux needed to balance a similarly sized terrestrial sink that is inferred from NOAA continental sites. Here we estimate summer tropical oceanic fluxes of OCS in 2006 using a linear flux inversion algorithm and new OCS data acquired by the Aura Tropospheric Emissions Spectrometer (TES). Modeled OCS concentrations based on these updated fluxes are consistent with HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations during 4th airborne campaign and improve significantly over the a priori model concentrations. The TES tropical ocean estimate of 70±16GgS in June,when extrapolated over the whole year (about 840 ± 192 Gg S yr-1), supports the hypothesis proposed by Berry et al. (2013) that the ocean flux is in the higher range of approximately 800 Gg S yr-1.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key reaction in various electrochemical energy devices. This work reports an inexpensive mesoporous LaMnO3+δ perovskite for ORR with remarkable activity, synthesized by a facile aerosol-spray assisted approach. The mesoporous LaMnO3+δ material shows a factor of 3.1 higher activity (at 0.9 V vs. RHE) than LaMnO3 obtained from co-precipitation method (LMO-CP). Based on results of x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, we conclude that the chemical state of surface Mn and the high surface area are the sources to the notably enhanced activity. The study of Zn-air batteries device further confirmed a Pt/C comparable performance in the practical devices with the novel mesoporous LaMnO3+δ catalyst, where the power density at 200 mA/cm2 is only 2.1% lower than in the battery with same-loaded Pt/C catalyst. Therefore, the high mass activity and low-cost of Mn/La may make LaMnO3+δ further approach to the application of electrochemical devices.

OCS is destroyed by enzymes that interact with CO2 during photosynthesis, namely carbonic anhydrase (CA) and RuBisCO, where CA is the more important one. The majority of sources of OCS to the atmosphere are geographically separated from this large plant sink, whereas the sources and sinks of CO2 are co-located in ecosystems. The drawdown of OCS can therefore be related to the uptake of CO2 without the added complication of co-located emissions comparable in magnitude. Here we review the state of our understanding of the global OCS cycle and its applications to ecosystem carbon cycle science. OCS uptake is correlated well to plant carbon uptake, especially at the regional scale. OCS can be used in conjunction with other independent measures of ecosystem function, like solar-induced fluorescence and carbon and water isotope studies. More work needs to be done to generate global coverage for OCS observations and to link this powerful atmospheric tracer to systems where fundamental questions concerning the carbon and water cycle remain.

As the naturally evolved sunlight harvester, plant foliage is gifted with dedicated air-leaf interfaces countering light reflections and ambient ruins, yet offering antireflective and self-cleaning prototypes for manmade photovoltaics. In this work, we report on an ecological and bio-inspired coating strategy by replicating leaf structures onto Si-based solar cells. Transparent photopolymer with leaf surface morphologies was tightly cured on Si slabs through a facile double transfer process. After bio-mimicked layer coverages, sunlight reflection drops substantially from more than 35% down to less than 20% once lotus leaf was employed as the master. Consequentially, 10.9% gain of the maximum powers of the photovoltaic is obtained. The leaf replicas inherited their masters’ hydrophobicity which is resistant to acidic and basic conditions. Physically adhered dusts are easily removed by water rolling. Lightwave guidance mechanism among air-polymer-Si interfaces is explicated through optical simulations, while wettability through the morphological impacts on hydrophobic states. Taking advantages of varieties of foliage species and surface structures, the work is hoped to boost large-scale industrial designs and realizations of the bionic antireflective and superhydrophobic coating on future solar cells.

We present two new products from near-infrared Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) observations: Lowermost tropospheric (LMT, from 0 to 2.5km) and upper tropospheric-stratospheric (U, above 2.5km) carbon dioxide partial column mixing ratios. We compare these new products to aircraft profiles and remote surface flask measurements and find that the seasonal and year-to-year variations in the new partial column mixing ratios significantly improve upon the Atmospheric CO2 Observations from Space (ACOS) and GOSAT (ACOS-GOSAT) initial guess and/or a priori, with distinct patterns in the LMT and U seasonal cycles that match validation data. For land monthly averages, we find errors of 1.9, 0.7, and 0.8ppm for retrieved GOSAT LMT, U, and XCO2; for ocean monthly averages, we find errors of 0.7, 0.5, and 0.5ppm for retrieved GOSAT LMT, U, and XCO2. In the southern hemispheric biomass burning season, the new partial columns show similar patterns to MODIS fire maps and MOPITT multispectral CO for both vertical levels, despite a flat ACOS-GOSAT prior, and a CO-CO2 emission factor comparable to published values. The difference of LMT and U, useful for evaluation of model transport error, has also been validated with a monthly average error of 0.8 (1.4)ppm for ocean (land). LMT is more locally influenced than U, meaning that local fluxes can now be better separated from CO2 transported from far away.

A mesoporous MnCo₂O₄ electrode material is made for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis. The MnCo₂O₄ exhibits both Co₃O₄-like activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and Mn₂O₃-like performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The potential difference between the ORR and OER of MnCo₂O₄ is as low as 0.83 V. By XANES and XPS investigation, the notable activity results from the preferred MnIV- and CoII-rich surface. The electrode material can be obtained on large-scale with the precise chemical control of the components at relatively low temperature. The surface state engineering may open a new avenue to optimize the electrocatalysis performance of electrode materials. The prominent bifunctional activity shows that MnCo₂O₄ could be used in metal–air batteries and/or other energy devices.
