1. Cosmology from galaxy clusters with cosmic microwave background lensing mass calibration

Abstract: In this thesis, we present a cosmological analysis of the galaxy clusters in the Planck MMF3 cosmology sample, which consists of 439 Sunyaev-Zel’dovich-detected clusters, with a cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing calibration of the cluster masses. As demonstrated by Planck, galaxy clusters detected through their SZ signature offer a powerful way to constrain cosmological parameters such as Ωm, which parametrises the mean matter density of the Universe, and σ8, which characterises the amplitude of the matter perturbations. Determining the absolute cluster mass scale is, however, difficult, and some recent calibrations have yielded cosmological constraints in apparent tension with constraints in the ΛCDM model derived from the power spectra of the primary CMB anisotropies. In order to calibrate the absolute mass scale of the full Planck cluster sample, we measure the CMB lensing signals of 433 of its clusters (those with measured redshift) with Planck temperature data. We calibrate the bias and intrinsic scatter of our CMB lensing mass observable, the CMB lensing signal-to-noise, with mock observations from an N-body simulation. We then perform a joint likelihood analysis of the cluster counts and mass observables taking as input the CMB lensing signal-to-noise ratios, SZ signal-to-noise ratios, and redshifts. Our analysis uses a likelihood that properly accounts for selection effects in the construction of the cluster sample. We find σ8(Ωm/0.33)0.25 = 0.765±0.035, Ωm = 0.33±0.02, σ8 = 0.76±0.04, and 1−bSZ = 0.71±0.10, where the mass bias factor 1−bSZ relates cluster mass to the SZ mass that appears in the X-ray-calibrated cluster scaling relations. We find no evidence for tension with the Planck primary CMB constraints on ΛCDM model parameters.

5. Essays on long-term unemployment in Spain

Abstract: This thesis is comprised of three essays relating to long term unemployment in Spain. The first chapter is methodological analysis of the main dataset that is used throughout the thesis. The second and third chapter provide two applications of the dataset for the study of long term unemployment. The methodology in these chapters can be easily adapted to study unemployment in other countries. Chapter 1. On the use of administrative data for the study of unemployment Social security administrative data are increasingly becoming available in many countries. These are very attractive data as they have a long panel structure (large N, large T) and allow to measure many different variables with higher precision. Because of their nature they can capture aspects that are usually hidden due to design or timing of survey data. However, administrative data are not ready to be used for labour market research, especially studies involving unemployment. The main reason is that administrative data only capture those registered unemployed, and in some cases only those receiving unemployment benefits. The gap between total unemployment and registered unemployment is not constant neither across workers characteristics nor time. In this paper I augment Spanish Social Security administrative data by adding missing unemployment spells using information from the institutional framework. I compare the resulting unemployment rate to that of the Labour Force Survey, showing that both are comparable and thus the administrative dataset is useful for labour market research. I also explore how the administrative data can be used to study some important aspects of the labour market that the Labour Force survey can’t capture. Administrative data can also be used to overcome some of the problems of the Labour Force survey such as changes in the structure of the survey. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive guide on how to adapt administrative datasets to make them useful for studying unemployment. Chapter 2. Unemployment Duration Variance Decomposition `a la ABS: Evidence from Spain Existing studies of unemployment duration typically use self-reported information from labour force surveys. We revisit this question using precise information on spells from administrative data. We follow the recent method proposed by Alvarez, Borovickova and Shimer (2015) for estimating the different components of the duration of unemployment using administrative data and have applied it to Austria. In this paper we apply the same method (the ABS method hereafter) to Spain using Spanish Social Security data. Administrative data have many advantages compared to Labour Force Survey data, but we note that there are some incompleteness that need to be enhanced in order to use the data for unemployment analysis (e.g., unemployed workers that run out of unemployment insurance have no labour market status in the data). The degree and nature of such incompleteness is country-specific and are particularly important in Spain. Following Chapter 1, we deal with these data issues in a systematic way by using information from the Spanish LFS data as well as institutional information. We hope that our approach will provide a useful way to apply the ABS method in other countries. Our findings are: (i) the unemployment decomposition is quite similar in Austria and Spain, specially when minimizing the effect of fixed-term contracts in Spain. (ii) the constant component is the most important one; while (total) heterogeneity and duration dependence are roughly comparable. (iii) also, we do not find big differences in the contribution of the different components along the business cycle. Chapter 3. Search Capital and Unemployment Duration I propose a novel mechanism called search capital to explain long term unemployment patters across different ages: workers who have been successful in finding jobs in the recent past become more efficient at finding jobs in the present. Search ability increases with search experience and depreciates with tenure if workers do not search often enough. This leaves young (who have not gained enough search experience) and older workers in a disadvantaged position, making them more likely to suffer long term unemployment. I focus on the case of Spain, as its dual labour market structure favours the identification of search capital. I provide empirical evidence that search capital affects unemployment duration and wages at the individual level. Then I propose a search model with search capital and calibrate it using Spanish administrative data. The addition of search capital helps the model match the dynamics of unemployment and job finding rates in the data, especially for younger workers.

7. Survey: Automatic generation of attack trees and attack graphs

Abstract: Graphical security models constitute a well-known, user-friendly way to represent the security of a system. These classes of models are used by security experts to identify vulnerabilities and assess the security of a system. The manual construction of these models can be tedious, especially for large enterprises. Consequently, the research community is trying to address this issue by proposing methods for the automatic generation of such models. In this work, we present a survey illustrating the current status of the automatic generation of two popular kinds of graphical security models: Attack Trees and Attack Graphs. The goal of this survey is to present the current methodologies used in the field, compare them, and present the challenges and future directions to the research community.

8. White-box validation of quantitative product lines by statistical model checking and process mining

Abstract: We propose a novel methodology to validate software product line (PL) models by integrating Statistical Model Checking (SMC) with Process Mining (PM). We consider the feature-oriented language QFLan from the PL engineering domain. QFLan allows to model PL equipped with rich cross-tree and quantitative constraints, as well as aspects of dynamic PLs such as the staged configurations. This richness allows us to easily obtain models with infinite state-space, calling for simulation-based analysis techniques, like SMC. For example, we use a running example with infinite state space. SMC is a family of analysis techniques based on the generation of samples of the dynamics of a system. SMC aims at estimating properties of a system like the probability of a given event (e.g., installing a feature), or the expected value of quantities in it (e.g., the average price of products from the studied family). Instead, PM is a family of data-driven techniques that uses logs collected on the execution of an information system to identify and reason about its underlying execution process. This often regards identifying and reasoning about process patterns, bottlenecks, and possibilities for improvement. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we propose, for the first time, the application of Process Mining (PM) techniques to the byproducts of Statistical Model Checking (SMC) simulations. This aims to enhance the utility of SMC analyses. Typically, if SMC gives unexpected results, the modeler has to discover whether these come from actual characteristics of the system, or from bugs in the model. This is done in a black-box manner, only based on the obtained numerical values. We improve on this by using PM to get a white-box perspective on the dynamics of the system observed by SMC. Roughly speaking, we feed the samples generated by SMC to PM tools, obtaining a compact graphical representation of the observed dynamics. Abstract: Background: Endoperiodontal lesion (EPL) is defined as a pathological communication between pulpal and periodontal tissues. Currently, accurate diagnosis and treatment of this pathology are challenging. This study aims to identify the different endoperiodontal therapies to propose a clinical protocol to simplify and unify the criteria for EPL treatment. Material and Methods: Observational cross-sectional study through an electronic survey. This study matches STROBE guidelines. The anonymous questionnaire contained open-ended and close-ended questions and was distributed to dentistry professors of the UPV/EHU and different professionals from Spanish associations and scientific societies. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: A total of 128 responses were obtained, of which 120 were active professionals or had not been so for less than 5 years. The majority of professionals were women (65.6%) and from the Basque Country (63.9%). A total of 86.6% reported having complementary studies to a degree or a bachelor’s degree. The treatments performed by these professionals were similar to those reported in the literature, which started with root canal treatment when there was an endodontic origin (91.5%), and with basic periodontal treatment when periodontal (51.3%). Conclusions: Considering the current scientific evidence and the clinical practice of professionals in the treatment of EPL, we designed a clinical protocol. This protocol needs validation in larger populations and with longer follow-ups.

Abstract: One of the most common damages in homes is that caused by water filtrations from the upper floor, where someone who is the owner, a tenant o even several squatters may be living. This paper aims to address who should be liable for these damages by considering both the different scenarios that may arise and the interpretation and application that the Spanish courts have made of Article 1910 of the Civil Code. This provision places the responsibility for damages caused by objects thrown or falling from a house on the “householder” who lives in it., Uno de los daños más frecuentes en el hogar es el causado por filtraciones de agua que provienen del piso superior, donde puede estar viviendo alguien que es su propietario, un arrendatario o incluso varios okupas. El presente trabajo pretende abordar quién debería responder de estos daños atendiendo, tanto a la casuística que se puede presentar, como a la interpretación y aplicación que han hecho los tribunales españoles del artículo 1910 del Código civil. Esta norma hace recaer la responsabilidad de los daños causados por las cosas que se arrojen o caigan desde una casa en el “cabeza de familia” que habita en ella.

11. Evidence of Reflected Internal Solitary Waves in the Strait of Gibraltar

Abstract: Large-amplitude internal solitary waves (ISWs) propagating eastward toward the Alboran Sea have long been known in the Strait of Gibraltar. New in-situ data and satellite images evidence northwestward propagating ISWs. These waves are probably the reflection of the well-known eastward propagating wave along the Moroccan shelf. A simple 2D-vertical section, run with the compressible non-hydrostatic Coastal and Regional Ocean COmmunity model, illustrates that the Moroccan slope is conducive to reflection of incident solitary waves of amplitude observed in the Strait of Gibraltar. A clear signature of these waves in the Tarifa high-frequency sea level oscillations is depicted that paves the way to studies of the seasonality of ISWs in the Strait of Gibraltar with the long-time series of sea level at Tarifa. The polarity of the reflected waves, observed with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers/Conductivity-Temperature-Depth array moorings, presents a slight variability possibly due to the internal tide oscillations. The reflected ISWs arrives at the mooring location in phase with the peak of the internal tide. For the strongest tide, the pynocline approaches a critical point where the polarity of the ISWs might reverse. Abstract: 436 p., La peri-implantitis (PI) es un trastorno inflamatorio-infeccioso multifactorial que condiciona la pérdida progresiva del hueso de soporte. Todavía no se conocen todos los factores involucrados en su desarrollo y su verdadera patogenia.Hemos realizado un estudio de casos y controles sobre pacientes con PI de la CAPV, analizando la susceptibilidad genética mediante el estudio de polimorfismos genéticos (SNPs) relacionados con la respuesta inflamatoria y el remodelado óseo. También hemos realizado la caracterización citológica de la mucosa peri-implantaria en este trastorno, así como su utilidad diagnóstica. Finalmente, hemos investigado la presencia del hongo Candida spp. y su rol patogénico.La aparición de PI se ha asociado a SNPs de los genes GBP1, BRINP3, OPG, BMP4 y FGF3, sin que su presencia incremente el riesgo de desarrollar la enfermedad. La presencia de células epiteliales, microbiota simple, polimorfonucleares y hematíes incrementa el riesgo para desarrollar PI. La presencia oral de Candida spp. en pacientes en control con PI es baja y está relacionada con el acúmulo de placa bacteriana y el tipo de rehabilitación protésica.

14. Tuning Almond Lipase Features by Using Different Immobilization Supports

Abstract: The lipase from Prunus dulcis almonds has been immobilized for the first time. For this purpose, two different supports, an octadecyl methacrylate particulate support, and aminated agarose (monoaminoethyl-N-aminoethyl) have been utilized. Both immobilized biocatalysts show improved enzyme stability, but great changes in enzyme specificity were detected. The enzyme immobilized via ion exchange maintained its activity intact versus p-nitrophenyl butyrate, while the enzyme immobilized on the hydrophobic support fully lost its activity versus this substrate, which was confirmed to be due to substrate adsorption on the support. However, this biocatalyst was much more active versus triacetin (more than 10-fold), R- or S- methyl mandelate at pH 7. At pH 9, a strong effect of using phosphate or bicarbonate as reaction buffers was detected. Using bicarbonate, the interfacially immobilized enzyme presented no activity versus R-isomer, but it was very active versus the S-isomer and triacetin. Using a phosphate buffer during the reaction, all compounds were recognized as substrates. The enzyme immobilized via ion exchange was significantly more active using phosphate; in fact, using bicarbonate, the enzyme was inactive versus both methyl mandelate isomers. This paper shows for the first time a great interaction between the effects of the immobilization protocol and buffer used during reaction on the enantiospecificity of lipases.

Abstract: The lipases from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL) and Candida antarctica (B) (CALB) were immobilized on octyl-agarose beads at 1 mg/g (a loading under the capacity of the support) and by overloading the support with the enzymes. These biocatalysts were compared in their stabilities in 10 mM of sodium phosphate, HEPES, and Tris-HCl at pH 7. Lowly loaded CALB was more stable than highly loaded CALB preparation, while with TLL this effect was smaller. Phosphate was very negative for the stability of the CALB biocatalyst and moderately negative using TLL at both loadings. The stability of the enzymes in HEPES and Tris-HCl presented a different response as a function of the enzyme loading (e.g., using lowly loaded CALB, the stabilities were similar in both buffers, but it was clearly smaller in HEPES using the highly loaded biocatalysts). Moreover, the specific activity of the immobilized enzymes versus p-nitrophenol butyrate, triacetin and R- or S-methyl mandelate depended on the buffer, enzyme loading, and interaction between them. In some cases, almost twice the expected activity could be obtained using highly loaded octyl-CALB, depending on the buffer. A co-interaction between the effects on enzyme activity and the specificity of support enzyme loading and buffer nature was detected.

Abstract: Neurosurgery is evolving with new techniques and technologies, relies heavily on high-quality education and training. Social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn have become integral to this training. These platforms enable sharing of surgical experiences, fostering global knowledge-sharing and collaboration among neurosurgeons. According to the PICO format, the target population (P) for the purpose of this paper are medical students, neurosurgical residents and consultants on the role of social media (I) in neurosurgery among Low-Middle income countries (C) with the main outcome to understand the collaborative domain of learning.This cross-sectional survey, conducted in June-July 2023, involved 210 medical students, neurosurgery residents, fellows, and practicing neurosurgeons from low and middle-income countries. A structured questionnaire assessed social network usage for neurosurgery training, covering demographic details, usage frequency, and purposes like education, collaboration, and communication. Participants rated these platforms' effectiveness in training on a 1-5 scale. Data collection employed emails, social media groups, and direct messaging, assuring respondent anonymity. The survey aimed to understand and improve social networks' use in neurosurgery, focusing on professional development, challenges, and future potential in training.In a survey of 210 participants from low and middle-income countries, 85.5% were male, 14.5% female, with diverse roles: 42.9% neurosurgery residents, 40% practicing neurosurgeons, 14.6% medical students, and 2.4% other healthcare professionals. Experience ranged from 0 to 35 years, with Mexico, Nigeria, and Kenya being the top participating countries. Most respondents rated neurosurgery training resources in their countries as poor or very poor. 88.7% used social media professionally, predominantly WhatsApp and YouTube. Abstract: Over half of women with psychosis are mothers. Research suggests that mothers with psychosis face unique challenges affecting both their mental health prognosis and their relationship with their children. Moreover, those children have a higher risk of developing a mental disorder. Notwithstanding, interventions specifically tailored to these families remain largely uncovered. Metacognitive Training (MCT) has demonstrated its efficacy in improving cognitive insight, symptom management, and social cognition in people with psychosis. However, there is no evidence of the efficacy of MCT in a family setting (MCT-F). This study describes the first adaptation of MCT for mothers with psychosis and their adolescent children in an online group setting. The phases (assessment, decision, adaptation, production, topical experts' integration) of the ADAPT-ITT model were systematically applied through a participatory approach (n = 22), including a first-person perspective and involving qualitative (e.g., topical expert literature review and consensus groups, interviews, thematic analyses) and quantitative methods. While MCT's core components were retained, participants guided adaptations both in content and delivery. The findings suggest the importance of community engagement and sharing decision-making processes to demonstrate the acceptability and feasibility of the adapted intervention. Employing a structured approach such as the ADAPT-ITT model ensures readiness of the new training for efficacy trials.

Los Ecobarómetros se realizaron entre 2000 y 2013 con una periodicidad anual manteniendo la parte fundamental del contenido del cuestionario. Este informe contiene el análisis de los principales resultados obtenidos en la encuesta realizada entre los meses de mayo y junio de 2011., [EN] The aim of the Andalusian Ecobarometer is to analyze how the perception, attitudes and behaviour of Andalusians evolve in terms of the environment, as well as to evaluate environmental policies and the role played by the different social actors in Andalusia in relation to the promotion of sustainability and the conservation of natural resources. The Ecobarometers were carried out between 2000 and 2013 on an annual basis, maintaining the fundamental part of the content of the questionnaire. En esta edición de La Noche en Andalucía ha sido mayoritariamente online, debido a la crisis sanitaria provocada por el COVID-19. Este informe presenta datos significativos para medir el impacto de la Noche Europea de los Investigadores en Andalucía, así como la evaluación realizada por sus participantes: asistentes e investigadores., [EN] The European Researchers' Night is a Europe-wide scientific outreach event that displays the diversity of science and its impact on citizens' daily lives in fun, inspiring ways. The event is an initiative of the European Commission and is funded through the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions (MSCA) of the Horizon 2020 Programme. The ninth edition was celebrated in 371 European cities, including the eight Andalusian capitals on November 27, 2020. In Andalusia it has been mostly online due to the health crisis caused by COVID-19. This report presents significant data to measure the impact of the European Researchers' Night in Andalusia, as well as the evaluation conducted by its participants: attendees and researchers.

Abstract: RECQL5 is a member of the conserved RecQ family of DNA helicases involved in the maintenance of genome stability that is specifically found in higher eukaryotes and associates with the elongating RNA polymerase II. To expand our understanding of its function we expressed human RECQL5 in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which does not have a RECQL5 ortholog. We found that RECQL5 expression leads to cell growth inhibition, increased genotoxic sensitivity and transcription-associated hyperrecombination. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and transcriptomic analysis of yeast cells expressing human RECQL5 shows that this is recruited to transcribed genes and although it causes only a weak impact on gene expression, in particular at G + C-rich genes, it leads to a transcription termination defect detected as readthrough transcription. The data indicate that the interaction between RNAPII and RECQL5 is conserved from yeast to humans. Unexpectedly, however, the RECQL5-ID mutant, previously shown to have reduced the association with RNAPII in vitro, associates with the transcribing polymerase in cells. As a result, expression of RECQL5-ID leads to similar although weaker phenotypes than wild-type RECQL5 that could be transcription-mediated. Altogether, the data suggests that RECQL5 has the intrinsic ability to function in transcription-dependent and independent genome dynamics in S. cerevisiae.

Abstract: The ALICE Collaboration reports a differential measurement of inclusive jet suppression using pp and Pb−Pb collision data at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN−−−√=5.02 TeV. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameters R= 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 in pp collisions and R= 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 in central (0−10%), semi-central (30−50%), and peripheral (60−80%) Pb−Pb collisions. A novel approach based on machine learning is employed to mitigate the influence of jet background. This enables measurements of inclusive jet suppression in new regions of phase space, including down to the lowest jet pT≥40 GeV/c at R=0.6 in central Pb−Pb collisions. This is an important step for discriminating different models of jet quenching in the quark-gluon plasma. The transverse momentum spectra, nuclear modification factors, derived cross section, and nuclear modification factor ratios for different jet resolution parameters of charged-particle jets are presented and compared to model predictions. A mild dependence of the nuclear modification factor ratios on collision centrality and resolution parameter is observed. The results are compared to a variety of jet-quenching models with varying levels of agreement.

Abstract: The Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) phenomenon is essential to provide insights into the strong interaction in QCD, the properties of the quark-gluon plasma, and the topological characteristics of the early universe, offering a deeper understanding of fundamental physics in high-energy collisions. Measurements of the charge-dependent anisotropic flow coefficients are studied in Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN−−−√= 5.02 TeV to probe the CMW. In particular, the slope of the normalized difference in elliptic (v2) and triangular (v3) flow coefficients of positively and negatively charged particles as a function of their event-wise normalized number difference, is reported for inclusive and identified particles. The slope rNorm3 is found to be larger than zero and to have a magnitude similar to rNorm2, thus pointing to a large background contribution for these measurements. Furthermore, rNorm2 can be described by a blast wave model calculation that incorporates local charge conservation. In addition, using the event shape engineering technique yields a fraction of CMW (fCMW) contribution to this measurement which is compatible with zero. This measurement provides the very first upper limit for fCMW, and in the 10-60% centrality interval it is found to be 26% (38%) at 95% (99.7%) confidence level.

Abstract: This work explores a closure task in comics, a medium where visual and textual elements are intricately intertwined. Specifically, Text-cloze refers to the task of selecting the correct text to use in a comic panel, given its neighboring panels. Traditional methods based on recurrent neural networks have struggled with this task due to limited OCR accuracy and inherent model limitations. We introduce a novel Multimodal Large Language Model (Multimodal-LLM) architecture, specifically designed for Text-cloze, achieving a 10% improvement over existing state-of-the-art models in both its easy and hard variants. Central to our approach is a Domain-Adapted ResNet-50 based visual encoder, fine-tuned to the comics domain in a self-supervised manner using SimCLR. This encoder delivers comparable results to more complex models with just one-fifth of the parameters. Additionally, we release new OCR annotations for this dataset, enhancing model input quality and resulting in another 1% improvement. Finally, we extend the task to a generative format, establishing new baselines and expanding the research possibilities in the field of comics analysis.

26. Attack Tree Generation via Process Mining

Abstract: Attack Trees are a graphical model of security used to study threat scenarios. While visually appealing and supported by solid theories and effective tools, one of their main drawbacks remains the amount of effort required by security experts to design them from scratch. This work aims to remedy this by providing a method for the automatic generation of Attack Trees from attack logs. The main original feature of our approach w.r.t existing ones is the use of Process Mining algorithms to synthesize Attack Trees, which allow users to customize the way a set of logs are summarized as an Attack Tree, for example by discarding statistically irrelevant events. Our approach is supported by a prototype that, apart from the derivation and translation of the model, provides the user with an Attack Tree in the RisQFLan format, a tool used for quantitative risk modeling and analysis with Attack Trees. We illustrate our approach with the case study of attacks on a communication protocol, produced by a state-of-the-art protocol analyzer.

Abstract: The majority of cases of listeriosis are associated with the consumption of contaminated food. Some strains of Listeria monocytogenes can persist over months or years in meat processing plants increasing the risk of product contamination. The presence of L. monocytogenes was examined in 10 dry-cured ham processing facilities. A total of 1801 samples were collected from environment and equipment, during processing (1095) and after cleaning and disinfection (706). These samples were taken from non-food contact (736) and food contact (1065) surfaces. In addition, 204 samples from ham surfaces were also analysed. Prevalence varied from 6% to 34% among facilities, and was higher during processing than after cleaning and disinfection (24.8% vs 11.0%) and from non-food than from food contact surfaces (22.6% vs 17.4%). L. monocytogenes serotype 1/2a was predominant (53.9%), followed by 1/2c (26.0%) and 1/2b (15.3%) and less frequently 4b (4.8%). A total of 142 different pulsotypes were registered. Potential persistent L.monocytogenes strains were isolated in 9 out the 10 facilities, with no more than 6 pulsotypes in a given plant. Abstract: Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is an emerging technique that has attracted the attention of the research community due to its fast data acquisition and high-spectral resolution properties. Despite its versatility and mechanical stability, the complexity and cost of high performance DCS are still experimentally challenging. We propose a simple and compact DCS system that significantly reduces system costs by incorporating three low-cost key components: direct digital synthesizers and step recovery diodes in the signal generator to operate the lasers under gain-switching regime, and a software-defined radio as a digitizer. The viability of this configuration is demonstrated by performing DCS measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2), with a standard deviation of residual error of only ~ 0.01. These results will pave the way to the commercial availability of compact, high-resolution DCS systems.

Abstract: El contexto sociopolítico actual, marcado por el avance de las nuevas tecnologías y la traslación de la vida social al entorno digital, presenta una serie de particularidades e innovaciones aportadas por el denominado derecho digital. El objeto de investigación del presente trabajo, que utiliza como marco de análisis la teoría de las generaciones de los derechos humanos, se centra en cuestionar si el reconocimiento de los derechos humanos digitales como catálogo de derechos humanos queda provisto por las ya existentes generaciones o, en su caso, debe reconocerse como una nueva generación autónoma y diferenciada de derechos humanos. La metodología utilizada parte de la revisión cualitativa de las aportaciones doctrinales más relevantes, con especial atención a las brasileñas y españolas, aplicando una sensibilidad diferenciada en relación con la categorización más adecuada en pro de una mayor efectividad y legitimidad del sistema de protección de los derechos humanos en el entorno digital. 32. Coating of Soluble and Immobilized Enzymes with Ionic Polymers: Full Stabilization of the Quaternary Structure of Multimeric Enzymes

Abstract: This paper shows a simple and effective way to avoid the dissociation of multimeric enzymes by coating their surface with a large cationic polymer (e.g., polyethylenimine (PEI)) by ionic exchange. As model enzymes, glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) from Thermus thermophilus and formate dehydrogenase (FDH) from Pseudomonas sp. were used. Both enzymes are very unstable at acidic pH values due to the rapid dissociation of their subunits (half-life of diluted preparations is few minutes at pH 4 and 25 °C). GDH and FDH were incubated in the presence of PEI yielding an enzyme−PEI composite with full activity. To stabilize the enzyme−polymer composite, a treatment with glutaraldehyde was required. These enzyme−PEI composites can be crosslinked with glutaraldehyde by immobilizing previously the composite onto a weak cationic exchanger. The soluble GDH-PEI composite was much more stable than unmodified GDH at pH 4 and 30 °C (retaining over 90% activity after 24 h incubation) with no effect of the GDH concentration in the inactivation course. The composite could be very strongly, but reversibly, adsorbed on cationic exchangers. Similarly, FDH could be treated with PEI and glutaraldehyde after adsorption on cationic exchangers, This permitted a stabilized FDH preparation. In this way, the coating of the enzymes surfaces with PEI is used as a simple and efficient strategy to prevent enzyme dissociation of multimeric enzymes. Abstract: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) control immune responses and are essential to maintain immune homeostasis and self-tolerance. Hence, it is no coincidence that autoimmune and chronic inflammatory disorders are associated with defects in Tregs. These diseases have currently no cure and are treated with palliative drugs such as immunosuppressant and immunomodulatory agents. Thereby, there is a great interest in developing medical interventions against these diseases based on enhancing Treg cell function and numbers. Here, we give an overview of Treg cell ontogeny and function, paying particular attention to mucosal Tregs. We review some notable approaches to enhance immunomodulation by Tregs with therapeutic purposes including adoptive Treg cell transfer therapy and discuss relevant clinical trials for inflammatory bowel disease. 34. Purification and stabilization of a glutamate dehygrogenase from Thermus thermophilus via oriented multisubunit plus multipoint covalent immobilization

Abstract: The immobilization of a glutamate dehydrogenase from Thermus thermophilus (GDH) on glyoxyl agarose beads at pH 7 has permitted to perform the immobilization, purification and stabilization of this interesting enzyme. It was cloned in Escherichia coli and a first thermal shock of the crude preparation destroyed most mesophilic multimeric proteins. Glyoxyl agarose can only immobilize enzymes via a multipoint and simultaneous attachment. Therefore, only proteins having several terminal amino groups in a position that permits their interaction with a flat surface can be immobilized. GDH became rapidly immobilized at pH 7 and its multimeric structure became stabilized as evidenced by SDS-PAGE. This derivative was stable at acidic pH value while the non-stabilized enzyme was very unstable under these conditions due to subunit dissociation. After immobilization, a further incubation at pH 10 improved enzyme stability under any inactivating conditions by increasing the enzyme–support bonds. 35. Preparation of a Six-Enzyme Multilayer Combi-Biocatalyst: Reuse of the Most Stable Enzymes after Inactivation of the Least Stable One

Abstract: The coimmobilization of six different lipases on octyl agarose beads using an enzyme-multilayer strategy and employing polyethylenimine (PEI) and glutaraldehyde (GLU) as enzyme layer adhesives is shown. Our methodology enables the reuse of the most stable enzymes after the least stable enzyme inactivation takes place. The strategy consisted in immobilizing the most stable enzymes in an irreversible way while leaving the least stable enzymes just physically immobilized. To get the enzyme irreversible immobilization, a GLU treatment of the enzyme adsorbed on PEI was not enough. It must be coated with a new layer of PEI and treated again with GLU. However, this makes the enzyme immobilized in the enzyme-PEI-GLU layer unavailable for release under conditions compatible with the stability of the stable enzymes. This was solved by treating the upper layer of enzyme-PEI-GLU with dextran sulfate, enabling the immobilization and further release of the least stable enzyme, which was from Rhizomucor miehei (RML). Moreover, the GLU treatment had a very dissimilar effect on the enzyme stabilities, converting Lecitase in a stable enzyme while reducing the stability of the enzyme from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL). However, a similar treatment of TLL immobilized on octyl agarose had a stabilizing effect. 36. A Novel, Rapid Diagnostic Molecular Method for Sars-Cov-2 Detection by Nanoprobes

Abstract: Early diagnosis of active viral infections is crucial to prevent silent transmission among the population, as we have seen during the present COVID-19 pandemic. Single stranded RNA viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, are currently detected using molecular methods, such as the gold standard qRT-PCR. These methods require expensive equipment and specialized training, which limits its use as point-of-care (POC) diagnostic systems. We have developed a novel, fast and simple diagnostic method, based in the combination of Isothermal Loop Amplification (LAMP) [1], [2] and oligonucleotide-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). If viral RNA is amplified and recognized by de DNA probe, a change in gold nanoparticles aggregation state initiates, leading to a wavelength change in the region of the visible spectrum, evident by naked eye. The developed system has been designed by BioAssays SL to detect SARS-CoV-2. After successful results detecting synthetic targets, we have pre-validated our novel diagnostic system with a 364 sample panel from SARS-CoV-2 positive patients (83 positive samples and 281 negative samples). We analyzed two different primer sets, targeting Gen-E and Gen-N respectively, and we determined that the Gen-N primer set reliably detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA with an RT-qPCR cycle threshold (CT) number of up to 30, with a 98% sensitivity and 100% specificity compared to commercial qRT-PCR diagnostic kits. These results showed that RT-LAMP is sensitive enough to detect viral RNA within 30 min and a detection limit of 150 copies per mL when using these primers. To allow a colorimetric visualization of the results, we coupled LAMP amplification to AuNPs detection [3], [4]. DNA-AuNPs (nanoprobes) were able to detect LAMP results in a saline buffer in 15 minutes, leading to aggregation in the absence of RT-LAMP amplification. 37. Metal extractability patterns to evaluate (potentially) mobile fractions in periurban calcareous agricultural soils in the Mediterranean area—analytical and mineralogical approaches

Abstract: A set of periurban calcareous agricultural Mediterranean soils was spiked with a mixture of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn at two levels within the limit values proposed by current European legislation, incubated for up to 12 months, and subjected to various one-step extraction procedures to estimate mobile (neutral salts) and potentially mobile metal fractions (complexing and acidic extraction methods). The results obtained were used to study metal extractability patterns according to the soil characteristics. The analytical data were coupled with mineralogical investigations and speciation modelling using the Visual Minteq model. The formation of soluble metal-complexes in the complexing extracts (predicted by the Visual Minteq calculations) led to the highest extraction efficiency with complexing extractants. Metal extractability patterns were related to both content and composition of carbonate, organic matter, Fe oxide and clay fractions. Potentially mobile metal fractions were mainly affected by the finest soil fractions (recalcitrant organic matter, active lime and clay minerals). In the case of Pb, scarce correlations between extractable Pb and soil constituents were obtained which was attributed to high Pb retention due to the formation of 4PbCO3·3PbO (corroborated by X-ray diffraction). This enzyme has two peculiarities that make its immobilization complex. The first one is related to the poor presence of primary amino groups on its surface (just one Lys and the terminal amino group). The second one is its poor stability at alkaline pH values. Both features make the immobilization of this enzyme to be considered a complicated goal, as most of the immobilization protocols utilize primary amino groups for immobilization. This review presents some of the attempts to get immobilized pepsin biocatalyst and their applications. The high density of anionic groups (Asp and Glu) make the anion exchange of the enzyme simpler, but this makes many of the strategies utilized to immobilize the enzyme (e.g., amino-glutaraldehyde supports) more related to a mixed ion exchange/hydrophobic adsorption than to real covalent immobilization. The incubation of the thermally inactivated biocatalysts in the presence of dithiothreitol permitted to recover almost total activity of the biocatalysts prepared for 24 h of immobilization, while the enzyme immobilized for 3 h recovered less activity. This suggested that the main cause of the faster enzyme inactivation of the 24 h biocatalyst was the Cys oxidation. This was confirmed by inactivating the Cys blocked biocatalysts by using 2,2′-dipyridyldisulfide. Again, a higher percentage of the initial activity (when unblocked by incubation in mercaptoethanol the thermally inactivated biocatalysts) was observed for the 24 h biocatalyst. The use of helium atmosphere enabled to greatly improve the enzyme stability of all immobilized biocatalysts, confirming the highest stability of the biocatalyst immobilized for 24 h. 40. Stabilization of a formate dehydrogenase by covalent immobilization on highly activated glyoxyl-agarose supports

Abstract: Formate dehydrogenase (FDH) is a stable enzyme that may be readily inactivated by the interaction with hydrophobic interfaces (e.g., due to strong stirring). This may be avoided by immobilizing the enzyme on a porous support by any technique. Thus, even if the enzyme is going to be used in an ultra-membrane reactor, the immobilization presents some advantages. Immobilization on supports activated with bromocianogen, polyethylenimine, glutaraldehyde, etc., did not promote any stabilization of the enzyme under thermal inactivation. However, the immobilization of FDH on highly activated glyoxyl agarose has permitted increasing the enzyme stability against any distorting agent: pH, T, organic solvent, etc. The time of support-enzyme reaction, the temperature of immobilization, and the activation of the support need to be optimized to get the optimal stability-activity properties. Optimized biocatalyst retained 50% of the offered activity and became 50 times more stable at high temperature and neutral pH. Moreover, the quaternary structure of this dimeric enzyme becomes stabilized by immobilization under optimized conditions. Thus, at acidic pH (conditions where the subunit dissociation is the first step in the enzyme inactivation), the immobilization of both subunits of the enzyme on glyoxyl-agarose has allowed the enzyme to be stabilized by hundreds of times. Moreover, the optimal temperature of the enzyme has been increased (even by 10 °C at pH 4.5). 41. Pectoralis major transfer for subscapular deficiency: anatomical study of the relationship between the transferred muscle and the musculocutaneous nerve

Abstract: Purpose: Pectoralis major transfer is indicated for irreparable subscapularis tendon tears. One surgical option is transferring the sternal part of the pectoralis major to the humeral insertion of the subscapularis under the conjoined tendon of the coracobrachialis and biceps muscles. The purpose of this study is to define the anatomical relationship between the transferred tendon and the musculocutaneous nerve. Methods: In 52 cadaveric fresh-frozen shoulders, the relevant structures were dissected and a pectoralis major transfer was performed. The relationship between the transferred tendon, the musculocutaneous nerve branches distally and the coracoid process proximally was examined. Measurements were taken at the conjoined tendon level. Results: The distance between the coracoid process and the most proximal musculocutaneous nerve branch was 54.2 ± 33.2 mm. In 25 cases (48%), the transferred tendon passed freely between both structures. In 16 cases (31%), there was contact distally with the musculocutaneous nerve. In 11 cases (21%), there was contact both proximally with the coracoid process and distally with the musculocutaneous nerve, making a safe transfer impossible. Conclusions: When performing a pectoralis major transfer, it is essential to identify the musculocutaneous nerve and its branches. 42. Improvement of the stability of alcohol dehydrogenase by covalent immobilization on glyoxyl-agarose

Abstract: Immobilization of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) from Horse Liver inside porous supports promotes a dramatic stabilization of the enzyme against inactivation by air bubbles in stirred tank reactors. Moreover, immobilization of ADH on glyoxyl-agarose promotes additional stabilization against any distorting agent (pH, temperature, organic solvents, etc.). Stabilization is higher when using highly activated supports, they are able to immobilize both subunits of the enzyme. The best glyoxyl derivatives are much more stable than conventional ADH derivatives (e.g., immobilized on BrCN activated agarose). For example, glyoxyl immobilized ADH preserved full activity after incubation at pH 5.0 for 20 h at room temperature and conventional derivatives (as well as the soluble enzyme) preserved less than 50% of activity after incubation under the same conditions. Moreover, glyoxyl derivatives are more than 10 times more stable than BrCN derivatives when incubated in 50% acetone at pH 7.0. Multipoint covalent immobilization, in addition to multisubunit immobilization, seems to play an important stabilizing role against distorting agents. In spite of these interesting stabilization factors, immobilization hardly promotes losses of catalytic activity (keeping values near to 90%). This immobilized preparation is able to keep good activity using dextran-NAD+. Abstract: Summary Despite the important role that biocrust communities play in maintaining ecosystem structure and functioning in drylands world-wide, few studies have evaluated how climate change will affect them. Using data from an 8-yr-old manipulative field experiment located in central Spain, we evaluated how warming, rainfall exclusion and their combination affected the dynamics of biocrust communities in areas that initially had low (< 20%, LIBC plots) and high (> 50%, HIBC plots) biocrust cover. Warming reduced the richness (35 ± 6%), diversity (25 ± 8%) and cover (82 ± 5%) of biocrusts in HIBC plots. The presence and abundance of mosses increased with warming through time in these plots, although their growth rate was much lower than the rate of lichen death, resulting in a net loss of biocrust cover. On average, warming caused a decrease in the abundance (64 ± 7%) and presence (38 ± 24%) of species in the HIBC plots. Over time, lichens and mosses colonized the LIBC plots, but this process was hampered by warming in the case of lichens. 44. La rendición de cuentas como elemento clave en la gobernanza de los destinos turísticos

Abstract: La rendición de cuentas se configura como un elemento clave para el éxito de los procesos de gobernanza y, sin embargo, son inexistentes los estudios que han analizado este elemento en el ámbito de la gobernanza en destinos turísticos. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo fundamental poner de manifiesto la relevancia de la rendición de cuentas a través de la necesidad que muestran los ciudadanos de que su Administración pública municipal (APM) rinda cuentas y la utilidad que otorgan al informe de sostenibilidad anual en los destinos turísticos. Para alcanzar estos objetivos, revisamos la literatura especializada relacionada para, posteriormente, llevar a cabo una encuesta dirigida a los stakeholders de los destinos turísticos españoles. La población muestreada es de 11.251 individuos, obteniendo finalmente 1.027 respuestas, que suponen un error muestral de ±2,91% para un nivel de confianza del 95%. Los resultados obtenidos de la investigación permiten comprobar cómo los residentes en los destinos turísticos tienen una rotunda necesidad de que su APM rinda cuentas, especialmente en el ámbito económico. Abstract: Digitalization has played a key role in enabling the delivery of service-based solutions by facilitating customer-oriented needs-finding and personalized problem-solving capabilities. Artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) are decisive technologies in this process. This study evaluates how the use AI and IoT platforms impact solution delivery business models among servitized and non-servitized businesses. By running regression models on a sample of 213 businesses for 2023, it was found that the use of IoT platforms, rather than AI platforms, significantly assist companies down all four solution delivery continuums. Additionally, results indicate that the combined use of IoT platforms when servitizing leads to greater customer embeddedness, whereas the use of AI platforms among servitized firms significantly contributes to improving operational adaptiveness, Preprint

Abstract: Introduction: This study aims to discuss and assess the impact of three prevalent methodological biases: competing risks, immortal-time bias, and confounding bias in real-world observational studies evaluating treatment effectiveness. We use a demonstrative observational data example of COVID-19 patients to assess the impact of these biases and propose potential solutions. Methods: We describe competing risks, immortal-time bias, and time-fixed confounding bias by evaluating treatment effectiveness in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. For our demonstrative analysis, we use observational data from the registry of patients with COVID-19 who were admitted to the Bellvitge University Hospital in Spain from March 2020 to February 2021 and met our predefined inclusion criteria. We compare estimates of a single-dose, time-dependent treatment with the standard of care. We analyze the treatment effectiveness using common statistical approaches, either by ignoring or only partially accounting for the methodological biases. To address these challenges, we emulate a target trial through the clone-censor-weight approach. Results: Overlooking competing risk bias and employing the naïve Kaplan-Meier estimator led to increased in-hospital death probabilities in patients with COVID-19. Specifically, in the treatment effectiveness analysis, the Kaplan-Meier estimator resulted in an in-hospital mortality of 45.6% for treated patients and 59.0% for untreated patients. In contrast, employing an emulated trial framework with the weighted Aalen-Johansen estimator, we observed that in-hospital death probabilities were reduced to 27.9% in the “X”-treated arm and 40.1% in the non-“X”-treated arm. Immortal-time bias led to an underestimated hazard ratio of treatment. Conclusion: Overlooking competing risks, immortal-time bias, and confounding bias leads to shifted estimates of treatment effects. 47. What should be observed for optimal reward in POMDPs?

Abstract: Partially observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) are a standard model for agents making decisions in uncertain environments. Most work on POMDPs focuses on synthesizing strategies based on the available capabilities. However, system designers can often control an agent's observation capabilities, e.g. by placing or selecting sensors. This raises the question of how one should select an agent's sensors cost-effectively such that it achieves the desired goals. In this paper, we study the novel optimal observability problem OOP: Given a POMDP M, how should one change M's observation capabilities within a fixed budget such that its (minimal) expected reward remains below a given threshold? We show that the problem is undecidable in general and decidable when considering positional strategies only. We present two algorithms for a decidable fragment of the OOP: one based on optimal strategies of M's underlying Markov decision process and one based on parameter synthesis with SMT. We report promising results for variants of typical examples from the POMDP literature.

48. Assessing the Understandability and Acceptance of Attack-Defense Trees for Modelling Security Requirements

Abstract: Context and Motivation Attack-Defense Trees (ADTs) are a graphical notation used to model and assess security requirements. ADTs are widely popular, as they can facilitate communication between different stakeholders involved in system security evaluation, and they are formal enough to be verified, e.g., with model checkers. Question/Problem While the quality of this notation has been primarily assessed quantitatively, its understandability has never been evaluated despite being mentioned as a key factor for its success. Principal idea/Results In this paper, we conduct an experiment with 25 human subjects to assess the understandability and user acceptance of the ADT notation. The study focuses on performance-based variables and perception-based variables, with the aim of evaluating the relationship between these measures and how they might impact the practical use of the notation. The results confirm a good level of understandability of ADTs. Participants consider them useful, and they show intention to use them. Contribution This is the first study empirically supporting the understandability of ADTs, thereby contributing to the theory of security requirements engineering.

49. Realistic Continual Learning Approach using Pre-trained Models

Abstract: Continual learning (CL) is crucial for evaluating adaptability in learning solutions to retain knowledge. Our research addresses the challenge of catastrophic forgetting, where models lose proficiency in previously learned tasks as they acquire new ones. While numerous solutions have been proposed, existing experimental setups often rely on idealized class-incremental learning scenarios. We introduce Realistic Continual Learning (RealCL), a novel CL paradigm where class distributions across tasks are random, departing from structured setups. We also present CLARE (Continual Learning Approach with pRE-trained models for RealCL scenarios), a pre-trained model-based solution designed to integrate new knowledge while preserving past learning. Our contributions include pioneering RealCL as a generalization of traditional CL setups, proposing CLARE as an adaptable approach for RealCL tasks, and conducting extensive experiments demonstrating its effectiveness across various RealCL scenarios. Notably, CLARE outperforms existing models on RealCL benchmarks, highlighting its versatility and robustness in unpredictable learning environments.

50. Optimización de un remolque de ensayos de IDIADA con fines de homologación

Abstract: El proyecto realizado en colaboración con la empresa Applus IDIADA, se basa en el diseño de un nuevo prototipo de remolque de ensayos basado en uno ya existente, destinado a realizar pruebas de frenada con fines de homologación. En dichas pruebas se verifica que el sistema de frenado instalado en los ejes de remolque funciona correctamente y cumple con los requerimientos mínimos que dicta el reglamento vigente que le aplica. Se ha llevado a cabo este proyecto debido a la necesidad de tener disponible otro remolque de ensayos que permita agilizar la demanda de trabajo prevista en la homologación de componentes de frenado de remolques y semirremolques. Los objetivos marcados han sido, la optimización de la estructura que conforma el vehículo, la mejora de la practicabilidad del remolque y el incremento de la seguridad a la hora de llevar a cabo los ensayos pertinentes. Previamente a comenzar con el diseño del nuevo vehículo, se ha puesto en contexto el campo de la homologación de vehículos, explicando los inicios y las razones por las que existe la homologación. Seguidamente, se ha hecho un estudio de las características principales y el funcionamiento básico de los sistemas de frenado que instalan los remolques y semirremolques, para posteriormente describir los tipos de ensayo que se llevan a cabo en las pistas de prueba de IDIADA. El vehículo diseñado mediante el software CAD SolidWorks, es un remolque de un eje central con lanza de acoplamiento regulable en altura, con una masa máxima técnica admisible (MTMA) de 17.000 kg. Dispone de la posibilidad de ser lastrado mediante una estructura adaptada que permite cargar una serie de bloques que simulan la carga a la que estarán sometidos los ejes durante su uso habitual cuando sean comercializados. Para incrementar la seguridad, se ha incorporado un dispositivo de protección contra el empotramiento trasero regulable en altura y en profundidad en la parte posterior, sumado de una combinación de dispositivos de iluminaci, El projecte realitzat en col·laboració amb l’empresa Applus IDIADA, es basa en el disseny d’un nou prototipus de remolc d’assaigs basat en un ja existent, destinat a realitzar proves de frenada amb fins d’homologació. En aquestes proves es verifica que el sistema de frens instal·lat als eixos de remolc funciona correctament i compleix amb els requeriments mínims dictats al reglament vigent que li aplica. S’ha dut a terme aquest projecte degut a la necessitat de tenir disponible un altre remolc d’assaigs que permeti agilitzar la demanda de treball prevista en la homologació de components de fre de remolcs i semiremolcs. Els objectius marcats han sigut, la optimització de l’estructura que conforma el vehicle, la millora de la practicabilitat del remolc i l’increment de la seguretat a l’hora de realitzar els assaigs pertinents. These tests verify that the braking system installed on the trailer axles works correctly and complies with the minimum requirements dictated by the current regulations that apply to it. This project has been carried out due to the need to have another test trailer available that allows expediting the work demand foreseen in the approval of trailer and semitrailer braking components. The objectives set, have been optimizing the structure that makes up the vehicle, improve the practicability of the trailer and increase safety when carrying out the relevant tests. Before starting with the new vehicle design, the field of vehicle approval has been put into context, explaining the beginnings and the reasons why the approval exists. Next, a study of the main characteristics and basic operation of the braking systems installed by trailers and semi-trailers has been made, to later describe the types of tests that are carried out on the IDIADA test tracks. The vehicle, designed using CAD software SolidWorks, is a trailer with a central axle with a height-adjustable coupling drawbar, with a maximum permissible technical mass (MTMA) of 17,000 kg. It has the possibility of being ballasted by an adapted structure that allows loading a series of blocks that simulate the load to which the axles will be subjected during their normal use when they are commercialized. To increase safety, a height and depth adjustable rear underrun protection device has been incorporated at the rear, added to a combination of lighting and signalling devices that make the vehicle more visible in low visibility conditions.
