Theoretical and observational studies have suggested that ram-pressure stripping by the intracluster medium can be enhanced during cluster interactions, boosting the formation of the "jellyfish" galaxies. In this work, we study the incidence of galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping in 52 clusters of different dynamical states. We use optical data from the WINGS/OmegaWINGS surveys and archival X-ray data to characterise the dynamical state of our cluster sample, applying eight different proxies. We then compute the number of ram-pressure stripping candidates relative to the infalling population of blue late-type galaxies within a fixed circular aperture in each cluster. We find no clear correlation between the fractions of ram-pressure stripping candidates and the different cluster dynamical state proxies considered. These fractions also show no apparent correlation with cluster mass. To construct a dynamical state classification closer to a merging "sequence", we perform a visual classification of the dynamical states of the clusters, combining information available in optical, X-ray, and radio wavelengths. We find a mild increase in the RPS fraction in interacting clusters with respect to all other classes (including post-mergers). This mild enhancement could hint at a short-lived enhanced ram-pressure stripping in ongoing cluster mergers. However, our results are not statistically significant due to the low galaxy numbers. We note this is the first homogeneous attempt to quantify the effect of cluster dynamical state on ram-pressure stripping using a large cluster sample, but even larger (especially wider) multi-wavelength surveys are needed to confirm the results., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. By way of the projected phase-space (PPS), we investigate the relation between galaxy properties and cluster environment in a subsample of groups from the Yang Catalog. The sample is split according to the gaussianity of the velocity distribution in the group into gaussian (G) and non-gaussian (NG). Our sample is limited to massive clusters with $\rm M_{200} \geq 10^{14} M_{\odot}$ and $\rm 0.03\leq z \leq 0.1$. NG clusters are more massive, less concentrated and have an excess of faint galaxies compared to G clusters. NG clusters show mixed distributions of galaxy properties in the PPS compared to the G case. Using the relation between infall time and locus on the PPS, we find that, on average, NG clusters accreted $\rm \sim 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$ more stellar mass in the last $\sim 5$ Gyr than G clusters. The relation between galaxy properties and infall time is significantly different for galaxies in G and NG systems. The more mixed distribution in the PPS of NG clusters translates into shallower relations with infall time. Faint galaxies whose first crossing of the cluster virial radius happened 2-4 Gyr ago in NG clusters are older and more metal-rich than in G systems. All these results suggest that NG clusters experience a higher accretion of pre-processed galaxies, which characterizes G and NG clusters as different environments to study galaxy evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 17 pages, 9 Figures

Groups are the most common association of galaxies in the Universe, found in different configuration states such as loose, compact and fossil groups. We have studied the galaxy group MKW 4s, dominated by the giant early-type galaxy NGC 4104 at z=0.0282. Our aim was to understand the evolutionary stage of this group and to place it within the framework of the standard LambdaCDM cosmological scenario. We have obtained deep optical data with CFHT/Megacam (g and r bands) and we have applied both the galfit 2D image fitting program and the IRAF/ellipse 1D radial method to model the brightest group galaxy (BGG) and its extended stellar envelope. We have also analysed publicly available XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray data. From N-body simulations of dry-mergers with different mass ratios of the infalling galaxy, we could constrain the dynamical stage of this system. Our results show a stellar shell system feature in NGC 4104 and an extended envelope that was reproduced by our numerical simulations of a collision with a satellite galaxy about 4--6 Gyr ago. The initial pair of galaxies had a mass ratio of at least 1:3. Taking into account the stellar envelope contribution to the total r band magnitude and the X-ray luminosity, MKW 4s falls into the category of a fossil group. These simulations resulted in two specific scenarios: (i) The collision between A1644S and A1644N2. Our best model has an inclination between the merger plane and the plane of the sky of $30^\circ$, and reaches the best morphology $1.6\,$Gyr after the pericentric passage. At this instant A1644N2 is gas poor, becoming nearly undetectable in X-ray emission. This model shows a good agreement with observations; (ii) The collision between A1644S and A1644N1. This approach did not give rise to results as satisfactory as the first scenario, due to great disturbances in density and mismatching temperature maps. As a complementary study, we perform a three-cluster simulation using as base the best-fitting model to reproduce the current state of A1644 with the three main structures. This scenario presented a good agreement to the global morphology of the observations. While there are many ways to identify substructures in galaxy clusters using different wavelengths, each technique has its own caveat. In this paper, we conduct a detailed substructure search and dynamical state characterisation of Abell 2399, a galaxy cluster in the local Universe ($z \sim 0.0579$), by performing a multi-wavelength analysis and testing the results through hydro-dynamical simulations. In particular, we apply a Gaussian Mixture Model to the spectroscopic data from SDSS, WINGS, and Omega WINGS Surveys to identify substructures. We further use public \textit{XMM-Newton} data to investigate the intracluster medium (ICM) thermal properties, creating temperature, metallicity, entropy, and pressure maps. Finally, we run hydro-dynamical simulations to constrain the merger stage of this system. The ICM is very asymmetrical and has regions of temperature and pressure enhancement that evidence a recent merging process. The optical substructure analysis retrieves the two main X-ray concentrations. The temperature, entropy, and pressure are smaller in the secondary clump than in the main clump. On the other hand, its metallicity is considerably higher. This result can be explained by the scenario found by the hydro-dynamical simulations where the secondary clump passed very near to the centre of the main cluster possibly causing the galaxies of that region to release more metals through the increase of ram-pressure stripping.16, Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. Clusters of varying mass ratios can merge and the process significantly disturbs the cluster environments and alters their global properties. Active radio galaxies are another phenomenon that can also affect cluster environments. Radio jets can interact with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) and locally affect its properties. Abell~2384 (hereafter A2384) is a unique system that has a dense, hot X-ray filament or bridge connecting the two unequal mass clusters A2384(N) and A2384(S). The analysis of its morphology suggests that A2384 is a post-merger system where A2384(S) has already interacted with the A2384(N), and as a result hot gas has been stripped over a ~ 1 Mpc region between the two bodies. We have obtained its 325 MHz GMRT data, and we detected a peculiar FR I type radio galaxy which is a part of the A2384(S). One of its radio lobes interacts with the hot X-ray bridge and pushes the hot gas in the opposite direction. This results in displacement in the bridge close to A2384(S). Based on Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations, we notice a temperature and entropy enhancement at the radio lobe-X-ray plasma interaction site, which further suggests that the radio lobe is changing thermal plasma properties. We have also studied the radio properties of the FR I radio galaxy, and found that the size and radio luminosity of the interacting north lobe of the FR I galaxy are lower than those of the accompanying south lobe., Comment: 12 pages

We present a detailed analysis of two merging clusters, from XMM-\textit{Newton} X-ray archival data: PLCKESZ G036.7+14.9 ($z=0.15$; hereafter G036) and PLCK G292.5+22.0 ($z=0.30$; hereafter G292). X-ray observations confirm that the shocks in these systems are among the hottest known in the literature. From the ICM analysis of temperature discontinuity, the Mach numbers were determined to be $M_{\rm G036}=1.3$ and $M_{\rm G292}=1.5$ for G036 and G292, respectively. In this paper, for each cluster, we propose a hydrodynamic model for the merger as a whole, compatible with their diffuse X-ray emission and temperature maps. The simulations suggest that both clusters are observed shortly before pericentric passage. Our simulation results indicate that the merger of the G036 system is seen at an inclination of 50$^{\circ}$ (the angle between the plane of the orbit and the plane of the sky), and merely 50 Myr prior to the pericentric passage. We analysed XMM-{\it Newton} EPIC data for 53 galaxy clusters. Through 2D spectral maps, we provide the most detailed and extended view of the spatial distribution of temperature (kT), pressure (P), entropy (S) and metallicity (Z) of galaxy clusters to date with the aim of correlating the dynamical state of the system to six cool-core diagnoses from the literature. With the objective of building 2D maps and resolving structures in kT, P, S and Z, we divide the data in small regions from which spectra can be extracted. Our analysis shows that when clusters are spherically symmetric the cool-cores (CC) are preserved, the systems are relaxed with little signs of perturbation, and most of the CC criteria agree. The disturbed clusters are elongated, show clear signs of interaction in the 2D maps, and most do not have a cool-core. However, 16 well studied clusters classified as CC by at least four criteria show spectral maps that appear disturbed. All of these clusters but one show clear signs of recent mergers, with a complex structure and geometry but with a cool-core that remains preserved. Thus, although very useful for CC characterization, most diagnoses are too simplistic to reproduce the overall structure and dynamics of galaxy clusters, and therefore the selection of relaxed systems according to these criteria may affect mass estimates. We used optical imaging and spectroscopic data to derive substructure estimates for local Universe ($z < 0.11$) galaxy clusters from two different samples. The first was selected through the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect by the Planck satellite and the second is an X-ray selected sample. In agreement to X-ray substructure estimates we found that the SZ systems have a larger fraction of substructure than the X-ray clusters. We have also found evidence that the higher mass regime of the SZ clusters, compared to the X-ray sample, explains the larger fraction of disturbed objects in the Planck data. Although we detect a redshift evolution in the substructure fraction, it is not sufficient to explain the different results between the higher-z SZ sample and the X-ray one. We have also verified a good agreement ($\sim$60$\%$) between the optical and X-ray substructure estimates. However, the best level of agreement is given by the substructure classification given by measures based on the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), either the BCG$-$X-ray centroid offset, or the magnitude gap between the first and second BCGs. We advocate the use of those two parameters as the most reliable and cheap way to assess cluster dynamical state. We recommend an offset cut of $\sim$0.01$\times$R$_{500}$ to separate relaxed and disturbed clusters. Regarding the magnitude gap the separation can be done at $\Delta m_{12} = 1.0$. The central galaxy paradigm (CGP) may not be valid for $\sim$20$\%$ of relaxed massive clusters. However, the specific SFR (SSFR) decreases with stellar mass, meaning that more massive galaxies are forming less stars per unit of mass, and thus suggesting that the increase in star-forming members is driven by cluster assembly and infall. If the environment is somehow driving the SF, one would expect a relation between the SSFR and the cluster centric distance, but that is not the case. A possible scenario to explain this lack of correlation is the contamination by infalling galaxies in the inner part of the cluster which may be on their initial pass through the cluster center. We used X-ray 2D spectrally resolved maps to resolve structure in temperature and metal abundance. To perform stellar population analysis we applied the spectral fitting technique with STARLIGHT to the optical spectrum of the central galaxy. We simulated the chemical evolution of the central galaxy. While the temperature, pseudo-pressure, and pseudo-entropy maps showed no inhomogeneities, the iron spatial distribution shows a filamentary structure in the core of this group, which is spatially correlated with the central galaxy, suggesting a connection between the two. The analysis of the optical spectrum of the central galaxy showed no contribution by any recent AGN activity. Using the star formation history as input to chemical evolution models, we predicted the iron and oxygen mass released by supernovae (SNe) winds in the central galaxy up to the present time. Comparing the predicted amount of mass released by the NGC4325 galaxy to the ones derived through X-ray analysis we conclude that the winds from the central galaxy alone play a minor role in the IGM metal enrichment of this group inside r2500. The SNe winds are responsible for no more than 3% of it and of the iron mass and 21% of the oxygen mass enclosed within r2500. Our results suggest that oxygen has been produced in the early stages of the group formation, becoming well mixed and leading to an almost flat profile. Instead, the iron distribution is centrally peaked, indicating that this element is still being added to the IGM specifically in the core by the SNIa. A possible scenario to explain the elongated iron-rich structure in the core of the NGC4325 is a past AGN activity, in which our results suggest an episode older than ~10^7-10^8 yrs and younger than 5x10^8., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 15 pages, 11 figures

We present an analysis of the colour-magnitude relation for a sample of 56 X-ray underluminous Abell clusters, aiming to unveil properties that may elucidate the evolutionary stages of the galaxy populations that compose such systems. To do so, we compared the parameters of their colour-magnitude relations with the ones found for another sample of 50 "normal" X-ray emitting Abell clusters, both selected in an objective way. The $g$ and $r$ magnitudes from the SDSS-DR7 were used for constructing the colour-magnitude relations. We found that both samples show the same trend: the red sequence slopes change with redshift, but the slopes for X-ray underluminous clusters are always flatter than those for the normal clusters, by a difference of about 69% along the surveyed redshift range of 0.05 $\le z <$ 0.20. Also, the intrinsic scatter of the colour-magnitude relation was found to grow with redshift for both samples but, for the X-ray underluminous clusters, this is systematically larger by about 28%. By applying the Cram\'er test to the result of this comparison between X-ray normal and underluminous cluster samples, we get probabilities of 92% and 99% that the red sequence slope and intrinsic scatter distributions, respectively, differ, in the sense that X-ray underluminous clusters red sequences show flatter slopes and higher scatters in their relations. No significant differences in the distributions of red-sequence median colours are found between the two cluster samples. While the temperature, pseudo-pressure, and pseudo-entropy maps showed no inhomogeneities, the iron spatial distribution shows a filamentary structure in the core of this group, which is spatially correlated with the central galaxy, suggesting a connection between the two. The analysis of the optical spectrum of the central galaxy showed no contribution by any recent AGN activity. Using the star formation history as input to chemical evolution models, we predicted the iron and oxygen mass released by supernovae (SNe) winds in the central galaxy up to the present time. Comparing the predicted amount of mass released by the NGC4325 galaxy to the ones derived through X-ray analysis we conclude that the winds from the central galaxy alone play a minor role in the IGM metal enrichment of this group inside r2500. The SNe winds are responsible for no more than 3% of it and of the iron mass and 21% of the oxygen mass enclosed within r2500. Our results suggest that oxygen has been produced in the early stages of the group formation, becoming well mixed and leading to an almost flat profile. Instead, the iron distribution is centrally peaked, indicating that this element is still being added to the IGM specifically in the core by the SNIa. A possible scenario to explain the elongated iron-rich structure in the core of the NGC4325 is a past AGN activity, in which our results suggest an episode older than ~10^7-10^8 yrs and younger than 5x10^8., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 15 pages, 11 figures

We present an analysis of the colour-magnitude relation for a sample of 56 X-ray underluminous Abell clusters, aiming to unveil properties that may elucidate the evolutionary stages of the galaxy populations that compose such systems. To do so, we compared the parameters of their colour-magnitude relations with the ones found for another sample of 50 "normal" X-ray emitting Abell clusters, both selected in an objective way. The $g$ and $r$ magnitudes from the SDSS-DR7 were used for constructing the colour-magnitude relations. We found that both samples show the same trend: the red sequence slopes change with redshift, but the slopes for X-ray underluminous clusters are always flatter than those for the normal clusters, by a difference of about 69% along the surveyed redshift range of 0.05 $\le z <$ 0.20. Also, the intrinsic scatter of the colour-magnitude relation was found to grow with redshift for both samples but, for the X-ray underluminous clusters, this is systematically larger by about 28%. By applying the Cram\'er test to the result of this comparison between X-ray normal and underluminous cluster samples, we get probabilities of 92% and 99% that the red sequence slope and intrinsic scatter distributions, respectively, differ, in the sense that X-ray underluminous clusters red sequences show flatter slopes and higher scatters in their relations. No significant differences in the distributions of red-sequence median colours are found between the two cluster samples. Signatures of mergers have been previously found in these clusters, both in X-rays and at opticalwavelengths, thus motivating our study. In X-rays, they are relatively bright, and Abell 223 shows a double structure. A filament has also been detected between the clusters both at optical and X-ray wavelengths. We analyse the optical properties of these two clusters based on deep imaging in two bands, derive their galaxy minosity functions (GLFs) and correlate these properties with X-ray characteristics derived from XMM-Newton data. The GLFs of Abell 222 in the g' and r' bands are well fit by a Schechter function; the GLF is steeper in r' than in g'. For Abell 223, the GLFs in both bands require a second component at bright magnitudes, added to a Schechter function; they are similar in both bands. The Serna & Gerbal method allows to separate well the two clusters. No obvious filamentary structures are detected at very large scales around the clusters, but a third cluster at the same redshift, Abell 209, is located at a projected distance of 19.2 Mpc. X-ray temperature and metallicity maps reveal that the temperature and metallicity of the X-ray gas are quite homogeneous in Abell 222, while they are very perturbed in Abell 223. The Abell 222/Abell 223 system is complex. The two clusters that form this structure present very different dynamical states. Signs of recent interactions are also detected in the optical data where this cluster shows a ``perturbed'' GLF. (Abridged) The main purpose of this paper is to consider the contribution of all three non-thermal components to total mass measurements of galaxy clusters: cosmic rays, turbulence and magnetic pressures. To estimate the thermal pressure we used public XMM-\textit{Newton} archival data of 5 Abell clusters. To describe the magnetic pressure, we assume a radial distribution for the magnetic field, $B(r) \propto \rho_{g}^{\alpha}$, to seek generality we assume $\alpha$ within the range of 0.5 to 0.9, as indicated by observations and numerical simulations. For the turbulent component, we assumed an isotropic pressure, $P_{\rm turb} = {1/3}\rho_{\rm g}(\sigma_{r}^{2}+\sigma_{t}^{2})$. We also consider the contribution of cosmic ray pressure, $P_{cr}\propto r^{-0.5}$. It follows that a consistent description for the non-thermal component could yield variation in mass estimates that vary from 10% up to $\sim$30%. We verified that in the inner parts of cool-core clusters the cosmic ray component is comparable to the magnetic pressure, while in non cool-core cluster the cosmic ray component is dominant. For cool-core clusters the magnetic pressure is the dominant component, contributing with more than 50% of total mass variation due to non-thermal pressure components. However, for non cool-core clusters, the major influence comes from the cosmic ray pressure that accounts with more than 80% of total mass variation due to non-thermal pressure effects. For our sample, the maximum influence of the turbulent component to total mass variation can be almost 20%.
