Lithium-oxygen batteries, also known as Lithium-air batteries, could possibly revolutionize energy storage as we know. By letting lithium react with ambient oxygen gas very large theoretical energy densities are possible. However, there are several challenges remaining to be solved, such as finding suitable materials and understanding the reaction, before the lithium-oxygen battery could be commercialized. The scope of this thesis is focusing on the latter of these challenges. Efficient ion transport between the electrodes is imperative for all batteries that need high power density and energy efficiency. Here the mass transport properties of lithium ions in several different solvents was evaluated. The results showed that the lithium mass transport in electrolytes based on the commonly used lithium-oxygen battery solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was very similar to that of conventional lithium-ion battery electrolytes. However, when room temperature ionic liquids were used the performance severely decreased. Addition of Li salt will effect the oxygen concentration in DMSO-based electrolytes. The choice of lithium salt influenced whether the oxygen concentration increased or decreased. At one molar salt concentration the highest oxygen solubility was 68 % larger than the lowest one. Two model systems was used to study the electrochemical reaction: A quartz crystal microbalance and a cylindrical ultramicroelectrode. The combined usage of these systems showed that during discharge soluble lithium superoxide was produced. A consequence of this was that not all discharge product ended up on the electrode surface. During discharge the cylindrical ultramicroelectrodes displayed signs of passivation that previous theory could not adequately describe. Here the passivation was explained in terms of depletion of active sites. A mechanism was also proposed. It is generally understood that particle-shaped Li2O2 is preferred in Li-O-2 batteries (LOBs) because the dominance of Li2O2 films may lead to poor electrochemical performance. The influence of Li2O2 morphology and its nucleation mechanism are probed by experiments along with the first-principle calculations. It is revealed that the LOBs with Li2O2 films deliver unexpectedly improved capacities, longer cycles, and significantly reduced overpotentials assisted by NiFeOx nanofiber catalysts. The energetically favored Li 2a vacancies under LiO2-rich conditions, small crystallites, and large contact areas with the electrode/electrolyte explain the anomalous performance enhancement. Li2O2 films are formed by a heterogeneous nucleation mechanism and the voltage applied, electrolyte, electrode surface, and use of catalysts are identified as the parameters controlling the mechanisms. The mapped correlations among these parameters shed light on the control of Li2O2 morphology for developing high-performance LOBs.

In this work, we develop a carbon and binder-free MnO2-x nanosheets/stainless steel (SS) cathode via a simple and effective electrodeposition-solvothermal route. The created Mn(III) and oxygen vacancy in MnO2-x nanosheets allows an significant increase in the electronic conductivity and catalytic activity. It is experimentally shown that the use of the present nanostructure MnO2-x/SS cathode in a non-aqueous lithium-oxygen battery results in a rechargeable specific capacity of 7300 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 200 mA g(-1), which is 39% higher than that with the MnO2/SS cathode. In addition, the specific capacities at 400 mA g(-1) and 800 mA g(-1) reach 5249 mAh g(-1) and 2813 mAh g(-1), respectively, which are over 30% higher than that with the MnO2/SS cathode. Furthermore, the discharge/charge cycle test shows no degradation for 120 cycles. Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je popísať vplyv lisovacieho tlaku na vlastnosti lítium-sírových akumulátorov. V teoretickej časti práce je stručne popísaná všeobecná problematika a terminológia batérií a ich delenie. Ku každému druhu batérií je bližšie popísaných pár konkrétnych typov. Samostatná kapitola je venovaná lítiovým druhom článkov a to hlavne lítium-iónovým akumulátorom. Vzhľadom k rozmanitosti zloženia lítium-iónových akumulátorov sú v tejto podkapitole hlbšie rozobrané najpoužívanejšie aktívne materiály elektród, používané elektrolyty a separátory.
