Abstract

Many survey studies in health care adjust for demographic characteristics such as age, gender, educational attainment and general health when performing statistical analyses. Whether the effects of these demographic characteristics are consistent between patient groups remains to be determined. This is important as the rationale for adjustment is often that demographic sub-groups differ in their so-called 'response tendency'. This rationale may be less convincing if the effects of response tendencies vary across patient groups. The present paper examines whether the impact of these characteristics on patients' global rating of care varies across patient groups. Secondary analyses using multi-level regression models were performed on a dataset including 32 different patient groups and 145,578 observations. For each demographic variable, the 95% expected range of case-mix coefficients across patient groups is presented. In addition, we report whether the variance of coefficients for demographic variables across patient groups is significant. Overall, men, elderly, lower educated people and people in good health tend to give higher global ratings. However, these effects varied significantly across patient groups and included the possibility of no effect or an opposite effect in some patient groups. The response tendency attributed to demographic characteristics - such as older respondents being milder, or higher educated respondents being more critical - is not general or universal. As such, the mechanism linking demographic characteristics to survey results on patient experiences with quality of care is more complicated than a general response tendency. It is possible that the response tendency interacts with patient group, but it is also possible that other mechanisms are at play.

2. Essential work of fracture compared to fracture mechanics - towards a thickness independent plane stress toughness

Abstract

The essential work of fracture (EWF) and the J-integral methods were applied in a study of the effect of the thickness on the cracking resistance of thin plates. The paper discusses two themes: (1) the relationships between the two methods or concepts is elucidated, and (2) a new, thickness independent plane stress toughness parameter is proposed. For that purpose, cracked aluminium 60820 thin plates of 1-6 mm thickness were tested in tension until final separation. The EWF, w(e), and the J-integral at cracking initiation, J(i), increase identically with thickness except at larger thickness for which the increase of J(i) levels off. J(i) reaches a maximum for 5-6 mm thickness whereas w(e) keeps increasing linearly with thickness. This difference is related to the more progressive development of the necking zone in front of the crack tip when thickness increases: at large thickness, cracking initiates well before the neck has developed to its stationary value during propagation. A linear regression on the fracture toughness/thickness curve allows partitioning the two contributions of the work of fracture: the plastic work per unit area for crack tip necking and a plane stress work per unit area for material separation. The pertinence of this new measure of the pure plane stress cracking resistance is critically discussed based on a micromechanical model for ductile fracture. The micromechanical void growth model incorporates void shape effects, which is essential in the low stress triaxiality regime. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

3. Thickness dependence of cracking resistance in thin aluminium plates

Abstract

The influence of thickness on the fracture toughness of aluminium 6082T0 thin plates of 1-6 mm thicknesses was investigated experimentally and numerically from tensile testing of cracked DENT specimens. The critical J-integral, J(c), critical CTOD, delta(CTODc), and essential work of fracture, w(e), are found to increase with thickness and to constitute equivalent measures of fracture toughness at small thickness. For larger thickness, J(c) and delta(CTODc) increase non-linearly with thickness and reach a maximum for 5-6 mm thickness Whereas iv, keeps increasing linearly with thickness. This difference is related to a more progressive development of the necking zone in front of the crack tip when thickness increases: at large thickness, cracking initiates well before the neck has developed to its stationary value during propagation, w(e) is more directly related to the steady-state crack growth resistance. A linear regression on the fracture toughness/thickness curve allows further separation of the two contributions of the essential work of fracture: the necking work and the fracture work spent for damaging. The maximum of the stress triaxiality ratio is shown to constitute a pertinent parameter for characterising how constraint affects cracking initiation in the present context where out-of-plane constraint dominates in-plane constraint. It allows justifying the shape of the J(c)/thickness relationship and results in the proposal of a 3D J(c)/thickness/triaxiality fracture locus. As fracture profiles are macroscopically flat with microscopic dimples and with only very small shear lips along the edges, a local criterion based on the growth and coalescence of voids has been used in order to predict fracture initiation. Abstract

The fracture toughness of PP-EP (Polypropylene-Ethylene-Propylene) blends is studied at room temperature using the "essential work of fracture" (EWF) method. The results obtained by applying this method are compared with those of puncture and tensile tests. Whereas the classical puncture tests do not allow classifying the rubber-toughened PP-EP blends, the EWF method proves to be a sensitive technique to monitor the effect of composition and morphology of the blend on fracture toughness. Moreover, the application of the EWF method allows monitoring how the fracture toughness of a material depends on its ability to deform extensively before fracturing and on its capacity to bear some load. A good combination of these two properties thus yields materials presenting an optimal fracture toughness.

5. Comparison of methods for fracture toughness testing of thin low carbon steel plates

Abstract

The fracture toughness of double edge notched tension (DENT) specimens of a low carbon steel sheet was evaluated using experimental and numerical methods. The concepts of critical J integral J(c) critical crack tip opening displacement delta(c), essential work of fracture w(e), and essential work of fracture and initiation w(e)(init) were compared. The numerical methods were based an finite strain, three-dimensional finite element simulations of the tensile straining of the DENT specimens. Good agreement was found between numerical and experimental J(c) values. Fair agreement was also found between J(c), and w(e)(init). The essential work of fracture w(e), was similar to 20% lower than J(c). This discrepancy is attributed to inaccuracy in the detection of clacking initiation. The Shih factor derived from the measured J(c) and delta(c) values closely corresponds with the plane stress prediction. MST/3935.

Abstract

The precision of the measurement of the essential work of fracture requires an accurate determination of the critical ligament length below which the ligament is in a mixed mode stress state and the failure mechanisms considerably change. A statistical procedure is proposed which allows to determine easily and accurately this critical ligament length. After rejection of the specimens having too small ligament lengths, w(e) is obtained by extrapolation of the remaining data for zero ligament length. The number of data points from which w, is calculated is also shown to strongly influence the precision of the measurement. The procedure is applied to the measurement of the toughness of sheets of Al and Zn alloys and of a low density polyethylene.

Abstract

Double-edge notched (DENT) steel plates were pulled until complete fracture and several experimental observations were made (using profilometry and scanning electron microscopy). The essential work of fracture (EWF) model was found to be well verified. Numerical simulations - up to the maximum load only - of some experiments were performed using the finite element method (FEM), and incorporating geometric and material non-linearities (large deformation elasto-plasticity). Some experimental measurements were compared with the corresponding numerical computations and excellent agreement was found.

8. Influence of test parameters on the measurement of the essential work of fracture of zinc sheets

Abstract

The Essential Work of Fracture (EWF) concept is used to characterize the fracture of thin plates of a zinc alloy. The consistency and applicability of the EWF approach are discussed. The successive stages of the fracture process were studied: the evolution of the shape of the crack tip was observed with a scanning electron microscope, the shape of the plastic zone and the evolution of necking in the ligament ahead of the crack tip were measured using a laser profilometer and the onset of cracking in the ligament was detected by means of a TV camera coupled with acoustic emission recording. The influence of both test parameters and material parameters on the Essential Work of Fracture (omega(e)) and on the CTOD (delta(c)) are elucidated. The effects of specimen geometry, deformation rate, texture and grain size are especially investigated. The main advantages and drawbacks of the EWF method are highlighted.

Abstract

Al-, Zn-, and Cu-based matrix composites reinforced with continuous fibres of carbon, SiC, Al2O3, or steel have been processed by squeeze casting or powder metallurgy. Interface reactions can be controlled by alloying additions in the matrix. Interface adhesion has been characterized from the distributions of fibre pull-out lengths on fracture surfaces. Thermal expansion curves reveal the magnitude of the stress transfer at interfaces. In the case of low melting point matrices, ductile steel fibres offer the best combination of fracture toughness and creep resistance.

Abstract

This work investigates the influence of some processing parameters on the extent of interfacial reaction in squeeze cast aluminium matrix composites reinforced with 12 mu m diameter, continuous stainless steel fibres. The average thickness of the reaction layer at fibre/matrix interfaces was measured by image analysis. When casting was made in a die at room temperature, the thickness of the reaction layer was affected on a distance of several mm from the lateral surface or from the bottom of the preform. The results indicate that the major part of the reaction occurs before solidification of the liquid metal. The control of the extent of interfacial reaction can be achieved through optimization of both infiltration parameters and features of the preform such as the volume fraction of the fibres.

Abstract

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile – hence precious – meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 106 km2. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < –5; meteoroid size ≥~1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/106 km
