Hydrophobic non-ionic (type V) deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as a new class of sustainable materials that have shown unique properties in several applications. In this study, type V DESs thymol : camphor, menthol : thymol and eutectic mixtures (EMs) based on menthol : carboxylic acids with variable chain length, are experimentally investigated using xenon NMR spectroscopy, with the aim to clarify the peculiar nanostructure of these materials. The results, obtained from the analysis of the 129Xe chemical shifts and of the longitudinal relaxation times, reveal a correlation between the deviation from ideality of the DESs and their structure free volume. Furthermore, the effect of varying the composition of DESs and EMs on the liquid structure is also studied.

Composite polymer electrolytes are systems of choice for future solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) is among the most interesting matrices to develop new generation quasi-solid electrolytes (QSEs). Here it is reported on nanocomposites made of PVDF-HFP and pegylated SiO2 nanoparticles. Silica-based hybrid nanofillers are obtained by grafting chains of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEG) with different molecular weight on the surface of silica nanoparticles. The functionalized nanofiller improves the mechanical, transport and electrochemical properties of the QSEs, which show good ionic conductivity values and high resistance against dendrite penetration, ensuring boosted long and safe device operation. The most promising result is obtained by dispersing 5 wt% of SiO2 functionalized with short PEG chains (PEG750, Mw = 750 g mol−1) in the PVDF-HFP matrix with an ease solvent-casting procedure. It shows ionic conductivity of 0.1 mS cm−1 at 25 °C, more than 250 h resistance to stripping/plating, and impressive results during cycling tests in LMB with LiFePO4 cathode.

SETBP1 mutations are found in various clonal myeloid disorders. However, it is unclear whether they can initiate leukemia, because SETBP1 mutations typically appear as later events during oncogenesis. To answer this question, we generated a mouse model expressing mutated SETBP1 in hematopoietic tissue: this model showed profound alterations in the differentiation program of hematopoietic progenitors and developed a myeloid neoplasm with megakaryocytic dysplasia, splenomegaly, and bone marrow fibrosis, prompting us to investigate SETBP1 mutations in a cohort of 36 triple-negative primary myelofibrosis (TN-PMF) cases. We identified 2 distinct subgroups, one carrying SETBP1 mutations and the other completely devoid of somatic variants. Clinically, a striking difference in disease aggressiveness was noted, with patients with SETBP1 mutation showing a much worse clinical course. In contrast to myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms, in which SETBP1 mutations are mostly found as a late clonal event, single-cell clonal hierarchy reconstruction in 3 patients with TN-PMF from our cohort revealed SETBP1 to be a very early event, suggesting that the phenotype of the different SETBP1+ disorders may be shaped by the opposite hierarchy of the same clonal SETBP1 variants.

Polycythemia Vera (PV) is typically caused by V617F or exon 12 JAK2 mutations. Little is known about Polycythemia cases where no JAK2 variants can be detected, and no other causes identified. This condition is defined as idiopathic erythrocytosis (IE). We evaluated clinical-laboratory parameters of a cohort of 56 IE patients and we determined their molecular profile at diagnosis with paired blood/buccal-DNA exome-sequencing coupled with a high-depth targeted OncoPanel to identify a possible underling germline or somatic cause. We demonstrated that most of our cohort (40/56: 71.4%) showed no evidence of clonal hematopoiesis, suggesting that IE is, in large part, a germline disorder. We identified 20 low mutation burden somatic variants (Variant allelic fraction, VAF, < 10%) in only 14 (25%) patients, principally involving DNMT3A and TET2. Only 2 patients presented high mutation burden somatic variants, involving DNMT3A, TET2, ASXL1 and WT1. We identified recurrent germline variants in 42 (75%) patients occurring mainly in JAK/STAT, Hypoxia and Iron metabolism pathways, among them: JAK3-V722I and HIF1A-P582S; a high fraction of patients (48.2%) resulted also mutated in homeostatic iron regulatory gene HFE-H63D or C282Y. By generating cellular models, we showed that JAK3-V722I causes activation of the JAK-STAT5 axis and upregulation of EPAS1/HIF2A, while HIF1A-P582S causes suppression of hepcidin mRNA synthesis, suggesting a major role for these variants in the onset of IE.

Recently, there has been an increase in telemedicine applied to child neuropsychiatry, such as the use of online platforms to collect remotely case histories and demographic and behavioral information. In the present proof-of-concept study, we aimed to understand to what extent information parents and teachers provide through online questionnaires overlaps with clinicians’ diagnostic conclusions on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Moreover, we intended to explore a possible role that autism spectrum disorders (ASD) symptoms played in this process. We examined parent- and teacher-rated questionnaires collected remotely and an on-site evaluation of intelligence quotients from 342 subjects (18% females), aged 3–16 years, and referred for suspected ADHD. An easily interpretable machine learning model—decision tree (DT)—was built to simulate the clinical process of classifying ADHD/non-ADHD based on collected data. Then, we tested the DT model’s predictive accuracy through a cross-validation approach. The DT classifier’s performance was compared with those that other machine learning models achieved, such as random forest and support vector machines. Differences in ASD symptoms in the DT-identified classes were tested to address their role in performing a diagnostic error using the DT model. The DT identified the decision rules clinicians adopt to classify an ADHD diagnosis with an 82% accuracy rate. Regarding the cross-validation experiment, our DT model reached a predictive accuracy of 74% that was similar to those of other classification algorithms. The caregiver-reported ADHD core symptom severity proved the most discriminative information for clinicians during the diagnostic decision process. However, ASD symptoms were a confounding factor when ADHD severity had to be established. Telehealth procedures proved effective in obtaining an automated output regarding a diagnostic risk, reducing the time delay between symptom detection and diagnosis. H

Transparent nanocomposite films made of surface-modified titanium dioxide nanoparticles and thermoplastic polyurethane are prepared via film casting approach showing enhanced refractive indexes and mechanical properties. Two different sets of composites were prepared up to 37.5 wt % of inorganic nanoparticles with a diameter <15 nm, one set using particles capped only with oleic acid and a second one with a bimodal system layer made of oleic acid and mPEO-5000 as coating agents. All of the composites show significantly enhanced refractive index and mechanical properties than the neat polymeric matrix. The transparency of nanocomposite films shows the excellent dispersion of the inorganic nanoparticles in the polymeric matrix avoiding aggregation and precipitation phenomena. Our study provides a facile and feasible route to produce transparent nanocomposite films with tunable mechanical properties and high refractive indices for various applications.

The ability to discriminate between high energy photons and ionizing particles is indeed useful in several fields, for example to estimate the power generated in nuclear reactors or to identify threat radioactive materials (Uranium-235 and Plutonium-230) from the reaction of other non-threat sources. PSD techniques involve a time-gated analysis of the transient voltage pulse generated in the photodetector of the scintillation counter. This analysis allows to distinguish between fast and slow components of the scintillation signal, i.e., prompt and delayed emission, whose relative intensity and lifetime depend on the type of the incident radiation . We demonstrated that sensitive and fast PSD detection can be achieved in nanostructured polymer scintillators. The material is made of a solid polymer matrix, which provides structural stability but is optically passive, liquid nanodomains containing an extremely high concentration of a triplet triplet-annihilation (TTA) dye and optionally a triplet sensitizer, so that the delayed fluorescence occurs even at ultra-low energy densities. In this work we investigated the PSD response of a series of nanostructured scintillators as a function of the composition, in order to point out the mechanism behind the sensitization of the delayed fluorescence intensity in the presence of a triplet sensitizer. The obtained results provide the guidelines for the design and fabrication of high performance nanostructured multiphase scintillators that can surpass the state-of the art, commercially available, PSD plastic scintillators.

Exosomes are promising therapeutics for tissue repair and regeneration to induce and guide appropriate immune responses in dystrophic pathologies. However, manipulating exosomes to control their biodistribution and targeting them in vivo to achieve adequate therapeutic benefits still poses a major challenge. Here we overcome this limitation by developing an externally controlled delivery system for primed annexin A1 myo-exosomes (Exomyo). Effective nanocarriers are realized by immobilizing the Exomyo onto ferromagnetic nanotubes to achieve controlled delivery and localization of Exomyo to skeletal muscles by systemic injection using an external magnetic field. Quantitative muscle-level analyses revealed that macrophages dominate the uptake of Exomyo from these ferromagnetic nanotubes in vivo to synergistically promote beneficial muscle responses in a murine animal model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Our findings provide insights into the development of exosome-based therapies for muscle diseases and, in general, highlight the formulation of effective functional nanocarriers aimed at optimizing exosome biodistribution

The use of scintillators for the detection of ionizing radiation is a critical aspect in many fields, including medicine, nuclear monitoring, and homeland security. Recently, lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP-NCs) have emerged as promising scintillator materials. However, the difficulty of affordably upscaling synthesis to the multigram level and embedding NCs in optical-grade nanocomposites without compromising their optical properties still limits their widespread use. In addition, fundamental aspects of the scintillation mechanisms are not fully understood, leaving the scientific community without suitable fabrication protocols and rational guidelines for the full exploitation of their potential. In this work, we realize large polyacrylate nanocomposite scintillators based on CsPbBr3 NCs, which are synthesized via a novel room temperature, low waste turbo-emulsification approach, followed by their in situ transformation during the mass polymerization process. The interaction between NCs and polymer chains strengthens the scintillator structure, homogenizes the particle size distribution and passivates NC defects, resulting in nanocomposite prototypes with luminescence efficiency >90%, exceptional radiation hardness, 4800 ph/MeV scintillation yield even at low NC loading, and ultrafast response time, with over 30% of scintillation occurring in the first 80 ps, promising for fast-time applications in precision medicine and high-energy physics. Ultrafast radioluminescence and optical spectroscopy experiments using pulsed synchrotron light further disambiguate the origin of the scintillation kinetics as the result of charged-exciton and multiexciton recombination formed under ionizing excitation. This highlights the role of nonradiative Auger decay, whose potential impact on fast timing applications we anticipate via a kinetic model.

Nowadays, the web presents real estate sites providing the possibility to use low-cost virtual reality (VR) solutions without sacrificing the high quality of graphic visualization of their contents to attract customers through enhanced digital experiences and increase the probability of selling their products. However, whether immersive VR technologies improve the chances of selling real estate is unclear. This study examines the effects induced by a real estate website that offers the opportunity to evaluate the potential purchase of a property in two ways: by viewing photos of the house (non-immersive conditions) and by taking a virtual tour of the same house using a VR head-mounted display (immersive conditions). Forty participants interested in evaluating the purchase of a new house, randomly assigned to one of the experimental conditions, participated in the experiment. During the real estate experience, electroencephalography (EEG) and skin conductance (SC) were recorded to collect biological data about the emotional effects raised by each condition. After the study, psychological self-reported questionnaires were collected measuring: emotions, presence, user experience (UX), and a three-item ad hoc scale exploring behavioral intentions (e.g., the perceived pleasantness of the house, the willingness to visit the house, and the purchase intention). Results show that immersive navigation is associated with more positive emotions (EEG), more intense physiological arousal (SC), higher scores on the presence questionnaire, and higher scores on the UX questionnaire compared to the non-immersive one. The psychological scales measuring emotions did not yield significant results. No significant difference in the three-item ad-hoc self-questionnaire was found, except for the item examining willingness to visit the real house building. Implications are also discussed.

The reversible gelation of aqueous methylcellulose (MC)solutionsat high temperature is followed stepwise with low-field time-domainnuclear magnetic resonance (LF-TD-NMR). The gel transition does notinfluence the self-diffusion coefficient of water but is associatedwith a decrease of proton transverse relaxation times H-1 T (2) by more than 60%. The effect ofmolecular weight and concentration of polysaccharide chains on transitiontemperature and gel strength is probed on several MCs with the samedegree of substitution. The measured trends connect the NMR relaxationwith macroscopic observables and agree with literature results frommore demanding techniques like small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering(SAXS and SANS). These findings support the idea of a network structureof disorderly arranged fibrils, with an inhomogeneous mesh size atleast on the order of tens of microns, which is in accord with theopaque appearance of these hydrogels. Magic sandwich echo (MSE) NMRmeasurements performed at 80 degrees C by substituting water with D2O also reveal the appearance with thermogelation of a rigidfraction involving about 25% of MC. This is consistent with the formationof fibrils mostly constituted by an amorphous matrix strongly permeatedby water and strengthened by well-dispersed MC crystallites.

Objective: To estimate the incidence and describe clinical characteristics and outcome of GBS in COVID-19 patients (COVID19-GBS) in one of the most hit regions during the first pandemic wave, Lombardia. Methods: Adult patients admitted to 20 Neurological Units between 1/3–30/4/2020 with COVID19-GBS were included as part of a multi-center study organized by the Italian society of Hospital Neuroscience (SNO). Results: Thirty-eight COVID19-GBS patients had a mean age of 60.7 years and male frequency of 86.8%. CSF albuminocytological dissociation was detected in 71.4%, and PCR for SARS-CoV-2 was negative in 19 tested patients. Based on neurophysiology, 81.8% of patients had a diagnosis of AIDP, 12.1% of AMSAN, and 6.1% of AMAN. The course was favorable in 76.3% of patients, stable in 10.5%, while 13.2% worsened, of which 3 died. The estimated occurrence rate in Lombardia ranges from 0.5 to 0.05 GBS cases per 1000 COVID-19 infections depending on whether you consider positive cases or estimated seropositive cases. When we compared GBS cases with the pre-pandemic period, we found a reduction of cases from 165 to 135 cases in the 2-month study period in Lombardia. Conclusions: We detected an increased incidence of GBS in COVID-19 patients which can reflect a higher risk of GBS in COVID-19 patients and a reduction of GBS events during the pandemic period possibly due to a lower spread of more common respiratory infectious diseases determined by an increased use of preventive measures.

Biallelic KARS1 mutations cause KARS-related diseases, a rare syndromic condition encompassing central and peripheral nervous system impairment, heart and liver disease, and deafness. KARS1 encodes the t-RNA synthase of lysine, an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, involved in different physiological mechanisms (such as angiogenesis, post-translational modifications, translation initiation, autophagy and mitochondrial function). Although patients with immune-hematological abnormalities have been individually described, results have not been collectively discussed and functional studies investigating how KARS1 mutations affect B cells have not been performed. Here, we describe one patient with severe developmental delay, sensoneurinal deafness, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, hypogammaglobulinemia and recurrent infections. Pathogenic biallelic KARS1 variants (Phe291Val/ Pro499Leu) were associated with impaired B cell metabolism (decreased mitochondrial numbers and activity). All published cases of KARS-related diseases were identified. The corresponding authors and researchers involved in the diagnosis of inborn errors of immunity or genetic syndromes were contacted to obtain up-to-date clinical and immunological information. Seventeen patients with KARS-related diseases were identified. Recurrent/severe infections (9/17) and B cell abnormalities (either B cell lymphopenia [3/9], hypogammaglobulinemia [either IgG, IgA or IgM; 6/15] or impaired vaccine responses [4/7]) were frequently reported. Immunoglobulin replacement therapy was given in five patients. Full immunological assessment is warranted in these patients, who may require detailed investigation and specific supportive treatment.

Background: Anemia (either pre-existing or hospital-acquired) is considered an independent predictor of mortality in acute coronary syndromes. However, it is still not clear whether anemia should be considered as a marker of worse health status or a therapeutic target. We sought to investigate the relationship between hospital-acquired anemia and clinical and laboratory findings and to assess the association with mortality and major cardiovascular events at long-term follow-up. Methods: Patients consecutively admitted at Niguarda Hospital between February 2014 and November 2020 for an acute coronary syndrome were included in this cohort analysis and classified as anemic at admission (group A), with normal hemoglobin at admission but developing anemia during hospitalization (hospital-acquired anemia) (group B); and with normal hemoglobin levels throughout admission (group C). Results: Among 1294 patients included, group A included 353 (27%) patients, group B 468 (36%), and group C 473 patients (37%). In terms of cardiovascular burden and incidence of death, major cardiovascular events and bleeding at 4.9-year median follow-up, group B had an intermediate risk profile as compared with A and C. Baseline anemia was an independent predictor of death (hazard ratio 1.51; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-2.25; P = .04) along with frailty, Charlson comorbidity Index, estimated glomerular filtration rate, previous myocardial infarction, and left ventricular ejection fraction. Conversely, hospital-acquired anemia was not associated with increased mortality (hazard ratio 1.18; 95% confidence interval, 0.8-1.75; P = .4). Conclusions: Hospital-acquired anemia affects one-third of patients hospitalized for acute coronary syndrome and is associated with age, frailty, and comorbidity burden, but was not found to be an independent predictor of long-term mortality.

Porous materials are ubiquitous systems with a large variety of applications from catalysis to polymer science, from soil to life science, from separation to building materials. Many relevant systems of biological or synthetic origin exhibit a hierarchy, defined as spatial organization over several length scales. Their characterization is often elusive, since many techniques can only be employed to probe a single length scale, like the nanometric or the micrometric levels. Moreover, some multiscale systems lack tridimensional order, further reducing the possibilities of investigation.129 Xe nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) provides a unique and comprehensive description of multiscale porous materials by exploiting the adsorption and diffusion of xenon atoms. NMR parameters like chemical shift, relaxation times, and diffusion coefficient allow the probing of structures from a few angstroms to microns at the same time. Xenon can evaluate the size and shape of a variety of accessible volumes such as pores, layers, and tunnels, and the chemical nature of their surface. The dynamic nature of the probe provides a simultaneous exploration of different scales, informing on complex features such as the relative accessibility of different populations of pores. In this review, the basic principles of this technique will be presented along with some selected applications, focusing on its ability to characterize multiscale materials.

In this study, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were engineered with an organic coating composed of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), providing heparin-based nanoparticle systems (LMWH@SPIONs). The purpose was to merge the properties of the heparin skeleton and an inorganic core to build up a targeted theranostic nanosystem, which was eventually enhanced by loading a chemotherapeutic agent. Iron oxide cores were prepared via the co-precipitation of iron salts in an alkaline environment and oleic acid (OA) capping. Dopamine (DA) was covalently linked to BSA and LMWH by amide linkages via carbodiimide coupling. The following ligand exchange reaction between the DA-BSA/DA-LMWH and OA was conducted in a biphasic system composed of water and hexane, affording LMWH@SPIONs stabilized in water by polystyrene sulfonate (PSS). Their size and morphology were investigated via dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The LMWH@SPIONs’ cytotoxicity was tested, showing marginal or no toxicity for samples prepared with PSS at concentrations of 50 µg/mL. Their inhibitory activity on the heparanase enzyme was measured, showing an effective inhibition at concentrations comparable to G4000 (N-desulfo-N-acetyl heparin, a non-anticoagulant and antiheparanase heparin derivative; Roneparstat). The LMWH@SPION encapsulation of paclitaxel (PTX) enhanced the antitumor effect of this chemotherapeutic on breast cancer cells, likely due to an improved internalization of the nanoformulated drug with respect to the free molecule. Lastly, time-domain NMR (TD-NMR) experiments were conducted on LMWH@SPIONs obtaining relaxivity values within the same order of magnitude as currently used commercial contrast agents.

Objectives Comparative trials among biological drugs for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) provided conflicting results. After patent expire of infliximab originator, adalimumab, infliximab biosimilar, golimumab and vedolizumab have been approved in Italy. We compared the efficacy of these four biologics in UC according to the concept of continuous clinical remission (CCR). Methods In a retrospective, multicentre study, all UC patients treated with adalimumab, infliximab biosimilar, golimumab or vedolizumab between 2014 and 2019 were included. All drugs were compared to each other according to the 1-year CCR rate, defined as Mayo partial score ≤2, with bleeding subscore = 0, without any relapse or optimization with dose escalation, topical treatments or steroid use after first clinical remission. Results Four-hundred sixteen patients (adalimumab = 90, infliximab biosimilar = 105, golimumab = 79, vedolizumab = 142) were included. CCR was achieved in similar percentages among the groups (33%, 37%, 28%, 37%, respectively). All drugs were equivalent in biologic-naive patients, while vedolizumab was better than a second anti-TNF in prior anti-TNF agent failures. No differences were found according to type of adverse events or severe adverse events. Conclusions Based on a strict definition of clinical remission, all biologics appear equally effective at 1 year. Changing to vedolizumab is more effective than switching to another anti-TNF in TNF failures.

Background: Delirium is thought to be common across various settings of care; however, still little research has been conducted in rehabilitation. Aim: We investigated the prevalence of delirium, its features and motor subtypes in older patients admitted to rehabilitation facilities during the three editions of the “Delirium Day project”. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in which 1237 older patients (age ≥ 65 years old) admitted to 50 Italian rehabilitation wards during the three editions of the “Delirium Day project” (2015 to 2017) were included. Delirium was evaluated through the 4AT and its motor subtype with the Delirium Motor Subtype Scale. Results: Delirium was detected in 226 patients (18%), and the most recurrent motor subtype was mixed (37%), followed by hypoactive (26%), hyperactive (21%) and non-motor one (16%). In a multivariate Poisson regression model with robust variance, factors associated with delirium were: disability in basic (PR 1.48, 95%CI: 1.17–1.9, p value 0.001) and instrumental activities of daily living (PR 1.58, 95%CI: 1.08–2.32, p value 0.018), dementia (PR 2.10, 95%CI: 1.62–2.73, p value < 0.0001), typical antipsychotics (PR 1.47, 95%CI: 1.10–1.95, p value 0.008), antidepressants other than selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (PR 1.3, 95%CI: 1.02–1.66, p value 0.035), and physical restraints (PR 2.37, 95%CI: 1.68–3.36, p value < 0.0001). Conclusion: This multicenter study reports that 2 out 10 patients admitted to rehabilitations had delirium on the index day. Mixed delirium was the most prevalent subtype. Delirium was associated with unmodifiable (dementia, disability) and modifiable (physical restraints, medications) factors. Identification of these factors should prompt specific interventions aimed to prevent or mitigate delirium.

The localization of the rubber vulcanization reaction close to the silica filler surface was investigated in isoprene rubber composites (IR NCs): the main goal was to highlight the role of curing agents’ dispersion and filler surface features on the spatial propagation of the rubber cross-links and the resulting mechanical behavior of the material. The study was realized by tailoring the morphology of the curing activator, i.e. by vulcanizing IR NCs with Zn@SiO2 double function filler, composed of Zn(II) single sites anchored on SiO2 filler, in comparison to silica filled IR NCs vulcanized with microcrystalline ZnO. The microscopic cross-links distribution was measured by Transmission Electron Microscopy for network visualization (NVTEM) and Time Domain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (TD-NMR). Besides the NCs mechanical behavior was characterized both at small strain and at fracture. In the presence of Zn@SiO2, higher cross-link density in proximity to SiO2 particles was evidenced, which gradually spreads from the filler surface to the bulk, induced by localization of the Zn(II) centers. IR NCs with Zn@SiO2 resulted stiffer (+45%) and with a lower fracture toughness (less than one third), compared to m-ZnO based NCs, which shows a quite homogeneous structure of the rubber cross-links network. The results highlighted the correlation between the composites structural features and their macroscopic behavior, paving the way to modulating the mechanical properties of elastomeric materials by tuning the nature of the curing agents.

Porous materials are ubiquitous systems with a large variety of applications from catalysis to polymer science, from soil to life science, from separation to building materials. Many relevant systems of biological or synthetic origin exhibit a hierarchy, defined as spatial organization over several length scales. Their characterization is often elusive, since many techniques can only be employed to probe a single length scale, like the nanometric or the micrometric levels. Moreover, some multiscale systems lack tridimensional order, further reducing the possibilities of investigation.129 Xe nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) provides a unique and comprehensive description of multiscale porous materials by exploiting the adsorption and diffusion of xenon atoms. NMR parameters like chemical shift, relaxation times, and diffusion coefficient allow the probing of structures from a few angstroms to microns at the same time. Xenon can evaluate the size and shape of a variety of accessible volumes such as pores, layers, and tunnels, and the chemical nature of their surface. The dynamic nature of the probe provides a simultaneous exploration of different scales, informing on complex features such as the relative accessibility of different populations of pores. In this review, the basic principles of this technique will be presented along with some selected applications, focusing on its ability to characterize multiscale materials.

Background: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease that targets acetylcholine receptor (AChR) of the neuromuscular junction. New-onset MG after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination has rarely been reported. Case presentation: We report about three patients who presented new-onset myasthenia gravis after receiving mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. The patients were all males and older than 55 years. All the patients presented with ocular and bulbar symptoms. The interval between vaccine administration and MG onset ranged from 3 days after the first dose to 10 days after the second dose. All the patients had elevated serum AChR antibodies and responded to pyridostigmine. Two out of three patients were successfully treated with IVIG or plasma exchange and with long-term immunosuppression. Conclusions: MG is a rare disease; clinicians should be aware of possible new-onset MG after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, especially with the current recommendation of booster doses. The hyperstimulation of the innate immune system or the exacerbation of a subclinical pre-existing MG could be possible explanations.

Research reports a relationship between impulsive behaviors and unhealthy eating behaviors. Serious games, combining educational contents with gamification, can increase engagement in therapeutic activities and behavioral training programs. In this context, we have developed a Serious Game to promote healthy eating style in children and adolescents in which impulsivity is a predominant feature, specifically individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. An initial analysis of the usability of the Serious Game was performed on a sample of 12 participants by means of quantitative and qualitative measures. Participants' feedback, which was overall positive, was helpful for defining the required improvements. Once implemented, the serious game will be then proposed to children and their families and included in home-based educational interventions.

The use of scintillators for the detection of ionizing radiation is a critical aspect in many fields, including medicine, nuclear monitoring, and homeland security. Recently, lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP-NCs) have emerged as promising scintillator materials. However, the difficulty of affordably upscaling synthesis to the multigram level and embedding NCs in optical-grade nanocomposites without compromising their optical properties still limits their widespread use. In addition, fundamental aspects of the scintillation mechanisms are not fully understood, leaving the scientific community without suitable fabrication protocols and rational guidelines for the full exploitation of their potential. In this work, we realize large polyacrylate nanocomposite scintillators based on CsPbBr3 NCs, which are synthesized via a novel room temperature, low waste turbo-emulsification approach, followed by their in situ transformation during the mass polymerization process. The interaction between NCs and polymer chains strengthens the scintillator structure, homogenizes the particle size distribution and passivates NC defects, resulting in nanocomposite prototypes with luminescence efficiency >90%, exceptional radiation hardness, 4800 ph/MeV scintillation yield even at low NC loading, and ultrafast response time, with over 30% of scintillation occurring in the first 80 ps, promising for fast-time applications in precision medicine and high-energy physics. Ultrafast radioluminescence and optical spectroscopy experiments using pulsed synchrotron light further disambiguate the origin of the scintillation kinetics as the result of charged-exciton and multiexciton recombination formed under ionizing excitation. This highlights the role of nonradiative Auger decay, whose potential impact on fast timing applications we anticipate via a kinetic model.

Although heritability estimates suggest a role for genetic components, environmental risk factors have been described as relevant in the etiology of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Several studies have investigated the role of toxicological pollution, i.e., air pollution, heavy metals, POPs, and phthalates. Clear evidence for association of ADHD and environmental factors has not been provided yet. To answer this, we have assessed all available systematic reviews and meta-analyses that focused on the association between pollutant exposure and either ADHD diagnosis or symptoms. More than 1800 studies were screened of which 14 found eligible. We found evidence of a significant role for some pollutants, in particular heavy metals and phthalates, in the increased risk of developing ADHD symptoms. However, at the current stage, data from existing literature also do not allow to weight the role of the different environmental pollutants. We also offer a critical examination of the reviews/meta-analyses and provide indications for future studies in this field. PROSPERO registration: CRD42022341496.

Missense variants of hyperpolarization-activated, cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) ion channels cause variable phenotypes, ranging from mild generalized epilepsy to developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE). Although variants of HCN1 are an established cause of DEE, those of HCN2 have been reported in generalized epilepsies. Here we describe the first case of DEE caused by the novel de novo heterozygous missense variant c.1379G>A (p.G460D) of HCN2. Functional characterization in transfected HEK293 cells and neonatal rat cortical neurons revealed that HCN2 p.G460D currents were strongly reduced compared to wild-type, consistent with a dominant negative loss-of-function effect. Immunofluorescence staining showed that mutant channels are retained within the cell and do not reach the membrane. Moreover, mutant HCN2 also affect HCN1 channels, by reducing the Ih current expressed by the HCN1-HCN2 heteromers. Due to the persistence of frequent seizures despite pharmacological polytherapy, the patient was treated with a ketogenic diet, with a significant and long-lasting reduction of episodes. In vitro experiments conducted in a ketogenic environment demonstrated that the clinical improvement observed with this dietary regimen was not mediated by a direct action on HCN2 activity. These results expand the clinical spectrum related to HCN2 channelopathies, further broadening our understanding of the pathogenesis of DEE.

Cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 4/6 inhibitors have significantly improved progression-free survival in hormone-receptor-positive (HR+), human-epidermal-growth-factor-receptor-type-2-negative (HER2−) metastatic luminal breast cancer (mLBC). Several studies have shown that in patients with endocrine-sensitive or endocrine-resistant LBC, the addition of CDK4/6 inhibitors to endocrine therapy significantly prolongs progression-free survival. However, the percentage of patients who are unresponsive or refractory to these therapies is as high as 40%, and no reliable and reproducible biomarkers have been validated to select a priori responders or refractory patients. The selection of mutant clones in the target oncoprotein is the main cause of resistance. Other mechanisms such as oncogene amplification/overexpression or mutations in other pathways have been described in several models. In this study, we focused on palbociclib, a selective CDK4/6 inhibitor. We generated a human MCF-7 luminal breast cancer cell line that was able to survive and proliferate at different concentrations of palbociclib and also showed cross-resistance to abemaciclib. The resistant cell line was characterized via RNA sequencing and was found to strongly activate the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Among the top deregulated genes, we found a dramatic downregulation of the CDK4 inhibitor CDKN2B and an upregulation of the TWIST1 transcription factor. TWIST1 was further validated as a target for the reversal of palbociclib resistance. This study provides new relevant information about the mechanisms of resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitors and suggests potential new markers for patients’ follow-up care during treatment.

Mantle-cell lymphoma (MCL) is a B-cell non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) with a poor prognosis, at high risk of relapse after conventional treatment. MCL-associated tumour microenvironment (TME) is characterized by M2-like tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs), able to interact with cancer cells, providing tumour survival and resistance to immuno-chemotherapy. Likewise, monocyte-derived nurse-like cells (NLCs) present M2-like profile and provide proliferation signals to chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), a B-cell malignancy sharing with MCL some biological and phenotypic features. Antibodies against TAMs targeted CD47, a ‘don't eat me’ signal (DEMs) able to quench phagocytosis by TAMs within TME, with clinical effectiveness when combined with Rituximab in pretreated NHL. Recently, CD24 was found as valid DEMs in solid cancer. Since CD24 is expressed during B-cell differentiation, we investigated and identified consistent CD24 in MCL, CLL and primary human samples. Phagocytosis increased when M2-like macrophages were co-cultured with cancer cells, particularly in the case of paired DEMs blockade (i.e. anti-CD24 + anti-CD47) combined with Rituximab. Similarly, unstimulated CLL patients-derived NLCs provided increased phagocytosis when DEMs blockade occurred. Since high levels of CD24 were associated with worse survival in both MCL and CLL, anti-CD24-induced phagocytosis could be considered for future clinical use, particularly in association with other agents such as Rituximab.

The porous topology of Type II Porous Liquids (PLs), prepared using Noria-OEt as an empty molecular host dissolved in 15-crown-5 solvent, is investigated with 129Xe NMR Spectroscopy. Xenon NMR parameters, such as chemical shifts and T1 relaxation times, measured in PLs solutions prepared at various Noria-OEt concentrations, are related to the intrinsic microporous structure of the material. The experimental data are interpreted on the basis of a multiple-site model for xenon atoms within the multiple PLs cavities. Diffusion NMR experiments show a similar mobility of xenon in PLs compared with the pure solvent.

Water electrolysis is by far the most appealing method to produce green hydrogen. Among the possible technologies, Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) water electrolyzers are promising in the medium term, as they make it possible to avoid critical and noble materials as catalyst components. However, AEMs are still lacking in performance and stability, which has become the current research focus. Here, we report the facile and inexpensive chemical modification of polyketone (PK) with a functional unit encompassing morpholinium as the positively charged group, and the fabrication of self-standing membranes. The synthesis products are investigated with an ensemble of physico-chemical and spectroscopic techniques, including solid-state and time-domain NMR, FT-IR, and thermal analysis. The membranes show good Ion Exchange Capacity values in the range 1.48–2.24 mmol g−1. A preliminary electrolysis test shows that the PK-based membrane has performance comparable to that of a commercial one.

Cement asbestos slates, commonly known as Eternit® and still abundant in private and public buildings, were deactivated through a thermal process. The resulting deactivated cement asbestos powder (DCAP), a mixture of Ca-Mg-Al silicates and glass, was compounded with Pavatekno Gold 200 (PT) and Pavafloor H200/E (PF), two different epoxy resins (bisphenol A epichlorohydrin) for flooring applications. The addition of the DCAP filler to the PF samples causes a slight but acceptable decrease in the relevant mechanical properties (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths) upon increasing DCAP content. The addition of the DCAP filler to pure epoxy (PT resin) causes a slight decrease in the tensile and flexural strengths with increasing DCAP content, while the compressive strength is almost unaffected, and the Shore hardness increases. The main mechanical properties of the PT samples are significantly better than those of the filler-bearing sample of normal production. Overall, these results suggest that DCAP can be advantageously used as filler in addition to, or in substitution for, commercial barite. In particular, the sample with 20 wt% of DCAP is the best performing in terms of compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths, whereas the sample with 30 wt% of DCAP shows the highest Shore hardness, which is an important property to be considered in flooring applications.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a very aggressive disease even in its early stages and is characterized by a severe prognosis. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is one of the milestones of treatment, and paclitaxel (PTX) is among the most active drugs used in this setting. However, despite its efficacy, peripheral neuropathy occurs in approximately 20-25% of cases and represents the dose-limiting toxicity of this drug. New deliverable strategies to ameliorate drug delivery and reduce side effects are keenly awaited to improve patients' outcomes. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have recently been demonstrated as promising drug delivery vectors for cancer treatment. The aim of the present preclinical study is to explore the possibility of a cell therapy approach based on the use of MSCs loaded with PTX to treat TNBC-affected patients. For this purpose, we in vitro evaluated the viability, migration and colony formation of two TNBC cell lines, namely, MDA-MB-231 and BT549, treated with MSC-PTX conditioned medium (MSC-CM PTX) in comparison with both CM of MSCs not loaded with PTX (CTRL) and free PTX. We observed stronger inhibitory effects on survival, migration and tumorigenicity for MSC-CM PTX than for CTRL and free PTX in TNBC cell lines. Further studies will provide more information about activity and potentially open the possibility of using this new drug delivery vector in the context of a clinical study.

La maggior parte dei disturbi mentali degli adulti ha radici nelle difficoltà dell'infanzia, e la maggior parte dei disturbi dell'infanzia ha conseguenze nella vita adulta (Pinto et al., 2015). A livello globale, fino al 20% dei bambini e degli adolescenti soffre di un problema di salute mentale (Organizzazione mondiale della sanità, 2000) e circa la metà di essi persisterà fino all'età adulta. Quando consideriamo la continuità dei problemi di salute mentale, dobbiamo tenere conto del fatto che le manifestazioni psicopatologiche sembrano estendersi lungo costrutti, riflettendo una continuitàa piuttosto che una dicotomia tra salute e malattia e tra una diagnosi e l'altra. I termini tratti "internalizzanti" ed "esternalizzanti" sono utilizzati per indicare classi di sintomi e comportamenti espressi in modo transdiagnostico. Le traiettorie di sviluppo dei tratti interiorizzanti ed esternalizzanti mostrano un complesso mix di continuità e discontinuità, ed evidenziano sia la continuità omotipica - la persistenza o la ricorrenza dello stesso disturbo (o tratto) in età diverse - sia la continuità eterotipica, in cui le vulnerabilità precedenti e successive differiscono nella presentazione (Maughan e Collishaw, 2015). Queste possibili traiettorie eterotipiche rappresentano piuttosto che un cambiamento reale, una diversa espressione degli stessi fattori causali sottostanti, che interagiscono tra loro in modi diversi in età diverse. Gli obiettivi del presente lavoro sono una migliore comprensione della patogenesi e dei decorsi dei tratti psicopatologici, al fine di identificare il prima possibile i bambini più bisognosi di intervento. Comprendere le diverse cause della psicopatologia è il primo passo per fornire un intervento migliore, che è una priorità assoluta in termini di costi sociali ed economici. La mia tesi si è concentrata sull'identificazione di tratti psicopatologici con approcci bottom-up, al fine di valutare la presenza di problemi di interna, Most adult mental disorders have roots in childhood difficulties, and most childhood disorders have consequences in adult life (Pinto et al., 2015). Globally, up to 20% of children and adolescents suffer from a mental health problem (World Health Organization, 2000) and approximately half of them will persist through adulthood. When we consider the continuity of mental health problems, we must take into account that psychopathological manifestations seem to span along constructs, reflecting a continuous rather than a dichotomy between health and illness and between one diagnosis and another. “Internalizing” and “Externalizing” traits is well established to indicate class of symptoms and behaviors expressed trans-diagnostically. Developmental trajectories of internalizing and externalizing traits show a complex mix of continuities and discontinuities, and evidence both homotypic continuity—the persistence or recurrence of the same disorder (or trait) at different ages—and heterotypic continuity, where earlier and later vulnerabilities differ in presentation (Maughan and Collishaw, 2015). These possible heterotypic trajectories represent rather than a real change, a different expression of the same underlying causal factors, which interact between each other in different ways at different ages. The aims of the present work are a better understanding of the pathogenesis and of the courses of psychopathological traits, in order to possibly identify children more in need of intervention. Understanding the different causes of psychopathology is the first step in providing a better intervention, which is an absolute priority in terms of social and economic costs. My thesis focused on the identification of psychopathological traits with bottom-up approaches, in order to evaluate the presence of internalizing and externalizing problems in developmental ages. SCOPO DEL LAVORO: La letteratura evidenzia il peso che ha avuto la pandemia da Covid-19 sul benessere della popolazione psichiatrica, ma pochi studi si sono concentrati sui pazienti autori di reato. È noto che i soggetti autori di reato soffrono di uno stress legato alla sospensione del giudizio, l’incertezza della pena o il suo prolungamento, fattori che si sommano a tratti genetici ed ambientali di vulnerabilità psichica. Per tale motivo, il lavoro si è voluto concentrare su come lo stress nei suoi diversi aspetti ha avuto un impatto sui pazienti autori di reato in una struttura residenziale psichiatrica nel monzese prima e durante la pandemia da Covid-19. MATERIALI E METODI: Per ottenere un riscontro dell’effetto dello stress sul campione (N=20) sono state analizzate le cartelle cliniche. È stato costruito un questionario ad hoc composto da domande chiuse e aperte per indagare il vissuto dei pazienti sulle maggiori aree psicopatologiche. I domini sono stati indagati chiedendo di pensare a “gennaio 2020” (periodo prepandemico, T0) e “da marzo 2020 ad oggi (marzo 2022)” (periodo pandemico, T1). Le tre domande aperte si riferiscono a come sono stati vissuti il periodo della pandemia e la restrizione dei contatti con l’esterno. RISULTATI: Il 55% del campione ha una diagnosi principale di disturbo dello spettro schizofrenico, il 40% di disturbo di personalità. La tipologia di reato maggiormente rappresentata sono gli atti di violenza in famiglia. I risultati del questionario misurati al T0 e al T1 mostrano che i pazienti hanno percepito in modo lieve gli effetti della pandemia sulle principali aree psicopatologiche indagate. È stato riscontrato un miglioramento in alcune aree, come “allegro/di buon umore” e “depresso”. Si nota invece un lieve aumento di “comportamenti vio lenti” e “attacchi di panico” e un peggioramento della percezione delle relazioni con gli ospiti (tab.4). Water-in-salt solutions, i.e. solutions in which the amount of salt by volume or weight is larger than that of the solvent, are attracting increasing attention in electrochemistry due to their distinct features that often include decomposition potentials much higher than those of lower concentration solutions. Despite the high solubility of potassium acetate (KAC) in water at room temperature (up to 25 moles of salt per kg of solvent), the low cost, and the large availability, the use of highly concentrated KAC solutions is still limited to a few examples in energy storage applications and a systematic study of their physical-chemical properties is lacking. To fill this gap, we have investigated the thermal, rheological, electrical, electrochemical, and spectroscopic features of KAC/water solutions in the compositional range between 1 and 25 mol kg-1. We show the presence of a transition between the "salt-in-solvent"and "solvent-in-salt"regimes in the range of 10-15 mol kg-1. Among the explored compositions, the highest concentrations (20 and 25 mol kg-1) exhibit good room temperature conductivity values (55.6 and 31 mS cm-1, respectively) and a large electrochemical potential window (above 2.5 V).

The formation of block copolymer nanoparticles is commonly obtained by switching solvent quality from good solvent for both blocks to a selective solvent for one block. The effect of the selective solvent on particle dimension, shape and inner structure has been analyzed in detail, instead less attention has been focused on the role of the common solvent. Poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(lactic acid) (PEO-b-PLA) is widely used for the preparation of nanometric drug delivery systems and the control of the particle morphology has relevant effects on bioactivity. In this work we investigate the effect of using different common solvents (acetone, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, dimethylformamide) on the self-assembly behavior of narrowly dispersed PEO-b-PLA copolymers, synthesized by metal free ring-opening polymerization, with large variation of molecular weight of the hydrophobic block (from 65 to 1300 lactic units). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) analyses of PEO-b-PLA nanoparticles reveal that their size and shape are strongly dependent on the hydrogen bonding ability of the common solvent used in the self-assembly process. As consequence of these variations, also the cytoxicity of the nanoparticles is affected.

HFE-related hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is characterized by marked phenotypic heterogeneity. Homozygosity for p.C282Y is a low penetrance genotype suggesting that the HFE-HH is a multifactorial disease resulting from a complex interaction involving a major gene defect, genetic background and environmental factors. We performed a targeted NGS-based gene panel to identify new candidate modifiers by using an extreme phenotype sampling study based on serum ferritin and iron removed/age ratio. We found an increased prevalence of the HIF1A p.Phe582Ser and p.Ala588Thr variants in patients with a severe iron and clinical phenotype. Accordingly, Huh-7 cells transfected with both variants showed significantly lower HAMP promoter activity by luciferase assay. The qRT-PCR assays showed a downregulation of hepcidin and an upregulation of the HIF1A target genes (VEGF, HMOX, FUR, TMPRSS6) in cells transfected with the HIF1A-P582S vector. We identified mutations in other genes (e.g., Serpina1) that might have some relevance in single cases in aggravating or mitigating disease manifestation. In conclusion, the present study identified HIF1A as a possible modifier of the HFE-HH phenotype cooperating with the genetic defect in downregulating hepcidin synthesis. In addition, this study highlights that an NGS-based approach could broaden our knowledge and help in characterizing the genetic complexity of HFE-HH patients with a severe phenotype expression.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy cases are increasingly being reported in patients affected by COVID-19, but the largest series so far only includes 4 patients. We present a series of 6 patients diagnosed with PRES during COVID-19 hospitalized in 5 Centers in Lombardia, Italy. 5 out of the 6 patients required intensive care assistence and seizures developed at weaning from assisted ventilation. 3 out of 6 patients underwent cerebrospinal fluid analysis which was normal in all cases, with negative PCR for Sars-CoV-2 genome search. PRES occurrence may be less rare than supposed in COVID-19 patients and a high suspicion index is warranted for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Several studies focused on the role of vitamin D (vitD) in pain chronification. This study focused on vitD level and pain chronification and extension in headache disorders. Eighty patients with primary headache underwent neurological examination, laboratory exams, including serum calcifediol 25(OH)D, and headache features assessment along with three questionnaires investigating depression, anxiety, and allodynia. The 86.8% of the population had migraine (48% episodic and 52% chronic). The 44.1% of patients had extracranial pain, and 47.6% suffered from allodynia. A vitD deficit, namely a serum 25(OH)D level <20 ng/ml, was detectable in 46.1% of the patients, and it occurred more frequently (p = 0.009) in patients suffering from chronic migraine (CM)–medication overuse migraine (MOH) (62.9%) than in episodic migraine (EM, 25.7%) or tension-type headache (TTH, 11.4%). The occurrence of extracranial pain and allodynia was higher in the CM-MOH than in the EM and in the TTH groups but was not related to the co-occurrence of vitD deficiency (Fisher's exact test p = 0.11 and p = 0.32, respectively). Our findings show that 25(OH)D deficit is also related to chronic headache, probably because of vitD anti-inflammatory and tolerogenic properties, reinforcing the idea of a neuroinflammatory mechanism underpinning migraine chronification.

We show the presence of a transition between the "salt-in-solvent"and "solvent-in-salt"regimes in the range of 10-15 mol kg-1. Among the explored compositions, the highest concentrations (20 and 25 mol kg-1) exhibit good room temperature conductivity values (55.6 and 31 mS cm-1, respectively) and a large electrochemical potential window (above 2.5 V).

This research project has the goal to verify whether the application of neuromarketing techniques, such as implicit association test (IAT) techniques and emotional facial expressions analyses may contribute to the assessment of user experience (UX) during and after website navigation. These techniques have been widely and positively applied in assessing customer experience (CX); however, little is known about their simultaneous application in the field of UX. As a specific context, the experience raised by different websites from two well-known automotive brands was compared. About 160 Italian university students were enrolled in an online experimental study. Participants performed a Brand Association Reaction Time Test (BARTT) version of the IAT where the two brands were compared according to different semantic dimensions already used in the automotive field. After completing the BARTT test, the participants navigated the target website: 80 participants navigated the first brand website, while the other half navigated the second brand website (between-subject design). During the first 3 min of website navigation, emotional facial expressions were recorded. The participants were asked to freely navigate the website home page, look for a car model and its characteristics and price, use the customising tool, and in the end, look for assistance. After the website navigation, all the participants performed, a second time, the BARTT version of the IAT, where the two brands were compared again, this time to assess whether the website navigation may impact the Implicit Associations previously detected. A traditional evaluation of the two websites was carried on by means of the classic heuristic evaluation. Developing new materials for the separation of gas mixtures is a key subject in setting up a circular economy. In this work, we report the synthesis and application of novel polymeric membranes, based on polymerized ionic liquids (PILs), to be used for CO2 separation from different gas pairs. Phosphonium-based PILs have been copolymerized within an original acrylate formulation that allowed the development of dense membranes able to overcome some of the main limitations related to ionic liquid membranes. Thereby, a collection of phosphonium ionic liquids has been investigated by evaluating the influence of the alkyl chain length and anion type on membrane structure and properties by employing a series of different chemo-physical characterization techniques. The membranes showed a marked preference toward CO2 permeation in the wet state, which simulates the conditions occurring with many CO2-containing gas streams, with two of the studied membranes exceeding the Robeson upper bound for the CO2/H2 gas pair.

The dynamics of xenon gas, loaded in a series of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium based ionic liquids, probes the formation of increasingly blurred polar/apolar nanodomains as a function of the anion type and the cation chain length. Exploiting 129Xe NMR spectroscopy techniques, like Pulse Gradient Spin Echo (PGSE) and inversion recovery (IR), the diffusion motion and relaxation times are determined for 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [CnC1im][TFSI]. A correlation between the ILs nano-structure and both xenon diffusivity and relaxation times, as well as chemical shifts, is outlined. Interestingly, comparison with previous results of the same properties in the homologous imidazolium chlorides and hexafluorophospate shows an opposite trend with the alkyl chain length. Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to calculate the xenon and cation and anion diffusion coefficients in the same systems, including imidazolium cations with longer chains (n=4, 6, 8 ... 20). An almost quantitative agreement with the experiments validates the MD simulations and, at the same time, provides the necessary structural and dynamic microscopic insights on the nano-segregation and diffusion of xenon in bistriflimide, chloride and hexafluorphosphate salts allowing to observe and rationalize the shaping effect of the cation in the nanostructure.
