These patients were originally included in an international study led by the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) on 2681 patients with AJCC/UICC-TNM stages I-III CC. METHODS: CD3+ and cytotoxic CD8+ T-lymphocyte densities were quantified in the tumor and invasive margin by digital pathology. The association of Immunoscore with prognosis was evaluated for time to recurrence (TTR), disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Immunoscore stratified Asian patients (n = 423) into different risk categories and was not impacted by age. Recurrence-free rates at 3 years were 78.5%, 85.2%, and 98.3% for a Low, Intermediate, and High Immunoscore, respectively (HR[Low-vs-High] = 7.26 (95% CI 1.75-30.19); p = 0.0064). A High Immunoscore showed a significant association with prolonged TTR, OS, and DFS (p < 0.05). In Cox multivariable analysis stratified by center, Immunoscore association with TTR was independent (HR[Low-vs-Int+High] = 2.22 (95% CI 1.10-4.55) p = 0.0269) of the patient's gender, T-stage, N-stage, sidedness, and MSI status. A significant association of a High Immunoscore with prolonged TTR was also found among MSS (HR[Low-vs-Int+High] = 4.58 (95% CI 2.27-9.23); p ≤ 0.0001), stage II (HR[Low-vs-Int+High] = 2.72 (95% CI 1.35-5.51); p = 0.0052), low-risk stage-II (HR[Low-vs-Int+High] = 2.62 (95% CI 1.21-5.68); p = 0.0146), and high-risk stage II patients (HR[Low-vs-Int+High] = 3.11 (95% CI 1.39-6.91); p = 0.0055). CONCLUSION: A High Immunoscore is significantly associated with the prolonged survival of CC patients within the Asian population.

Background: The NORMAN Association (https://www.norman-.network.com/) initiated the NORMAN Suspect List Exchange (NORMAN-SLE; https://www.norman-.network.com/nds/SLE/) in 2015, following the NORMAN collaborative trial on non-target screening of environmental water samples by mass spectrometry. Since then, this exchange of information on chemicals that are expected to occur in the environment, along with the accompanying expert knowledge and references, has become a valuable knowledge base for "suspect screening" lists. The NORMAN-SLE now serves as a FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) chemical information resource worldwide.Results: The NORMAN-SLE contains 99 separate suspect list collections (as of May 2022) from over 70 contributors around the world, totalling over 100,000 unique substances. The substance classes include per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals, pesticides, natural toxins, high production volume substances covered under the European REACH regulation (EC: 1272/2008), priority contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and regulatory lists from NORMAN partners. Several lists focus on transformation products (TPs) and complex features detected in the environment with various levels of provenance and structural information. Each list is available for separate download. The merged, curated collection is also available as the NORMAN Substance Database (NORMAN SusDat). Both the NORMAN-SLE and NORMAN SusDat are integrated within the NORMAN Database System (NDS). BackgroundInterleukin 12 (IL-12) is a pivotal regulator of innate and adaptive immunity. We conducted a prospective open-label, phase II clinical trial of electroporated plasmid IL-12 in advanced melanoma patients (NCT01502293).Patients and methodsPatients with stage III/IV melanoma were treated intratumorally with plasmid encoding IL-12 (tavokinogene telseplasmid; tavo), 0.5 mg/ml followed by electroporation (six pulses, 1500 V/cm) on days 1, 5, and 8 every 90 days in the main study and additional patients were treated in two alternative schedule exploration cohorts. Correlative analyses for programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), flow cytometry to assess changes in immune cell subsets, and analysis of immune-related gene expression were carried out on pre- and post-treatment samples from study patients, as well as from additional patients treated during exploration of additional dosing schedules beyond the pre-specified protocol dosing schedule. Response was measured by study-specific criteria to maximize detection of latent and potentially transient immune responses in patients with multiple skin lesions and toxicities were graded by the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.0 (CTCAE v4.0).ResultsThe objective overall response rate was 35.7% in the main study (29.8% in all cohorts), with a complete response rate of 17.9% (10.6% in all cohorts). The median progression-free survival in the main study was 3.7 months while the median overall survival was not reached at a median follow up of 29.7 months. A total of 46% of patients in all cohorts with uninjected lesions experienced regression of at least one of these lesions and 25% had a net regression of all untreated lesions. Since early July 2017 intense wildfires were recorded between August and September in Canada and Greenland, covering an area up to 4674 km2 in size. This paper describes the impact of these biomass burning (BB) events measured over Svalbard, using an ensemble of ground-based, columnar, and vertically-resolved techniques. BB influenced the aerosol chemistry via nitrates and oxalates, which exhibited an increase in their concentrations in all of size fractions, indicating the BB origin of particles. The absorption coefficient data (530 nm) at ground reached values up to 0.6 Mm-1, highlighting the impact of these BB events when compared to average Arctic background values, which do not exceed 0.05 Mm-1. The absorption behavior is fundamental as implies a subsequent atmospheric heating. At the same time, the AERONET Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data showed high values at stations located close to or in Canada (AOD over 2.0). Similarly, increased values of AODs were then observed in Svalbard, e.g., in Hornsund (daily average AODs exceeded 0.14 and reached hourly values up to 0.5). Elevated values of AODs were then registered in Sodankyla and Andenes (daily average AODs exceeding 0.150) a few days after the Svalbard observation of the event highlighting the BB columnar magnitude, which is crucial for the radiative impact. All the reported data suggest to rank the summer 2017 plume of aerosols as one of the biggest atmosphere related environmental problems over Svalbard region in last 10 years.

A robust immune score quantification is needed to introduce immune parameters into cancer classification. The aim of the study was to assess the prognostic value of total tumour-infiltrating T-cell counts and cytotoxic tumour-infiltrating T-cells counts with the consensus Immunoscore assay in patients with stage I-III colon cancer. METHODS: An international consortium of 14 centres in 13 countries, led by the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, assessed the Immunoscore assay in patients with TNM stage I-III colon cancer. Patients were randomly assigned to a training set, an internal validation set, or an external validation set. Paraffin sections of the colon tumour and invasive margin from each patient were processed by immunohistochemistry, and the densities of CD3+ and cytotoxic CD8+ T cells in the tumour and in the invasive margin were quantified by digital pathology. An Immunoscore for each patient was derived from the mean of four density percentiles. The primary endpoint was to evaluate the prognostic value of the Immunoscore for time to recurrence, defined as time from surgery to disease recurrence. Stratified multivariable Cox models were used to assess the associations between Immunoscore and outcomes, adjusting for potential confounders. Harrell's C-statistics was used to assess model performance. FINDINGS: Tissue samples from 3539 patients were processed, and samples from 2681 patients were included in the analyses after quality controls (700 patients in the training set, 636 patients in the internal validation set, and 1345 patients in the external validation set). The Immunoscore assay showed a high level of reproducibility between observers and centres (r=0.97 for colon tumour; r=0.97 for invasive margin; p<0.0001). We expose the current experimental and theoretical situation of the interesting case of the production of phi mesons in up to very high energy collisions of hadrons on both nucleon and nuclear targets, and we present a quantitavely good theoretical description of the corresponding experimental data, based on the formalism of the well established Quark-Gluon String Model, that has proved to be valid for a wide energy range. All the available experimental data for phi-meson production in hadron-nucleon collisions on the spectra of secondary phi, and on the ratios of phi/pi(-) and phi/K(-) production cross sections, as well the corresponding ones for phi-meson production on nuclear targets, are considered. Crystal symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) materials plays an important role in their electronic and optical properties. Engineering symmetry in 2D materials has recently emerged as a promising way to achieve novel properties and functions. The noncentrosymmetric structure of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), has allowed for valley control via circularly polarized optical excitation. In bilayer TMDCs, inversion symmetry can be controlled by varying the stacking sequence, thus providing a pathway to engineer valley selectivity. Here, we report the in situ integration of AA′ and AB stacked bilayer MoS2 with different inversion symmetries by creating atomically sharp stacking boundaries between the differently stacked domains, via thermal stimulation and electron irradiation, inside an atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The setup enables us to track the formation and atomic motion of the stacking boundaries in real time and with ultrahigh resolution which enables in-depth analysis on the atomic structure at the boundaries. In conjunction with density functional theory calculations, we establish the dynamics of the boundary nucleation and expansion and further identify metallic boundary states. Our approach provides a means to synthesize domain boundaries with intriguing transport properties and opens up a new avenue for controlling valleytronics in nanoscale domains via real-time patterning of domains with different symmetry properties.

The inclusive spectra of secondaries produced in soft (minimum-bias) p+Pb collisions at LHC energy are calculated in the frame of the Quark-Gluon String Model, by including the inelastic screening corrections (percolation effects). Helical-ribbon carbon nanofibers produced on an industrial scale were successfully converted in highly functionalized graphene nanoplatelets by using a slight modification of the Hummers oxidation method. The duration of the oxidative process severely affected the interlayer spacing in the resulting nanoplatelets and, consequently, they showed very different exfoliation behavior. Therefore, it was possible to obtain a variety of graphene-related products through their ultrasonication or thermal treatments such as exfoliation-reduction by flash-pyrolysis in air at temperatures between 400 and 1000 °C or standard activation with CO2 at 800 °C. Detailed comparison of the functionalized carbon nanoplatelets, graphene oxides, reduced graphene oxides and activated carbon nanoplatelets reveals the wide spectrum of their properties with specific surface areas in the range of 4–500 m2 g−1, oxygen content from 38 to 5 wt% and different structural ordering. This study also underlines the impact of the structural, textural and chemical changes experienced by the carbon nanofibers along the various processes on the performance as supercapacitor electrodes. This preliminary study, based on cyclic voltammetry in 2 M H2SO4 aqueous electrolyte, is a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of the different graphene-related materials for this application. The helical-ribbon carbon nanofibers displayed only 10 F g−1, the capacitance of the functionalized graphene nanoplatelets greatly rose to 104 F g−1 with clear contributions from pseudocapacitance. Values around 100–120 F g−1 were found for the graphene oxides and activated graphene nanoplatelets although a marked resistive character is detected. Flash-pyrolysis at 1000 °C leads to lower capacitance (79 F g−1) but much quicker charge propagation. Among all these materials, the lower-cost functionalized graphene nanoplatelets displayed the better behavior for aqueous supercapacitors.

We consider the photoproduction of secondary mesons in the framework of the Quark-Gluon String model. At relatively low energies, not only cylindrical, but also planar diagrams have to be accounted for. To estimate the significant contribution of planar diagrams in gamma-p collisions at rather low energies, we have used the expression obtained from the corresponding phenomenological expression for pi-p collisions. The results obtained by the model are compared to the existing SLAC experimental data.
