Abstract

The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on the Curiosity rover has detected evidence of oxychlorine compounds (i.e., perchlorates and chlorates) in Gale crater, which has implications for past habitability, diagenesis, aqueous processes, interpretation of in situ organic analyses, understanding the martian chlorine cycle, and hazards and resources for future human exploration. Pure oxychlorines and mixtures of oxychlorines with Mars-analog phases have been analyzed for their oxygen (O ) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) releases on SAM laboratory analog instruments in order to constrain which phases are present in Gale crater. These studies demonstrated that oxychlorines evolve O releases with peaks between ~200 and 600 C, although the thermal decomposition temperatures and the amount of evolved O decrease when iron phases are present in the sample. Mg and Fe oxychlorines decompose into oxides and release HCl between ~200 and 542 C. Ca, Na, and K oxychlorines thermally decompose into chlorides and do not evolve HCl by themselves. However, the chlorides (original or from oxychlorine decomposition) can react with water-evolving phases (e.g., phyllosilicates) in the sample and evolve HCl within the temperature range of SAM (<~870 C). These laboratory analog studies support that the SAM detection of oxychlorine phases is consistent with the presence of Mg, Ca, Na, and K perchlorate and/or chlorate along with possible contributions from adsorbed oxychlorines in Gale crater samples.

Abstract

Molecular hydrogen (H2) from volcanic emissions is suggested to warm the Martian surface when carbon dioxide (CO2) levels dropped from the Noachian (4100 to 3700 Myr) to the Hesperian (3700 to 3000 Myr). Its presence is expected to shift the conversion of molecular nitrogen (N2) into different forms of fixed nitrogen (N). Here we present experimental data and theoretical calculations that investigate the efficiency of nitrogen fixation by bolide impacts in CO2‐N2 atmospheres with or without H2. Surprisingly, nitricoxide(NO)wasproducedmoreefficientlyin20%H2 inspiteofbeingareducingagentandnotlikelyto increase the rate of nitrogen oxidation. Nevertheless, its presence led to a faster cooling of the shock wave raising the freeze‐out temperature of NO resulting in an enhanced yield. We estimate that the nitrogen fixation rate by bolide impacts varied from 7 × 10−4 to 2 × 10−3 g N·Myr−1·cm−2 and could imply fluvial concentration to explain the nitrogen (1.4 ± 0.7 g N·Myr−1·cm−2) detected as nitrite (NO2−) and nitrate (NO3−) by Curiosity at Yellowknife Bay. One possible explanation is that the nitrogen detected in the lacustrine sediments at Gale was deposited entirely on the crater's surface and was subsequently dissolved and transported by superficial and ground waters to the lake during favorable wet climatic conditions. The nitrogencontentsharplydecreasesinyoungersedimentsoftheMurrayformationsuggestingadeclineofH2 in the atmosphere and the rise of oxidizing conditions causing a shortage in the supply to putative microbial life.

3. Analyses of Crystalline and X-Ray Amorphous Materials in Gale Crater Rocks and Soils

Abstract

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity, is exploring the layered sediments of Gale crater with the primary goal the primary goal of finding and assessing environments that are, or once were, favorable habitats for life. Curiosity’s scientific payload was designed to analyze the mineralogical, geochemical, and textural properties of rocks and soils encountered by the rover. Among this payload is the CheMin X-ray diffractometer, an instrument that provides data to determine the identity of crystalline phases present at >1 wt%, the crystal chemistry of major minerals, and the distribution of crystalline, clay mineral, and amorphous phases in each analyzed sample. Mineralogical assessments are important to understanding sediment sources, weathering histories, depositional environments, and diagenetic processes that influenced the formation of analyzed soils and rocks. This dissertation discusses the mineralogy and crystal chemistry of an active eolian dune in Gale crater and compares the results to the basaltic soils analyzed by the Mars Exploration Rovers and to the predicted mineralogy of the dune field based on orbital spectral measurements. Quantitative mineralogical analyses of an eolian dune sample, named Gobabeb, revealed that the sand is dominated by basaltic minerals and X-ray amorphous phases. Plagioclase, olivine, and two Ca-Mg-Fe pyroxenes account for the majority of crystalline phases detected. Minor phases include magnetite, quartz, hematite, and anhydrite. The X-ray amorphous fraction, ~42 wt% of the Gobabeb sample, is composed primarily of SiO2, FeOT, Al2O3 and SO3. Proposed amorphous phases include basaltic glass, maskelynite, amorphous silica, nanophase iron oxides, and amorphous sulfates. The predicted mineralogy of the Bagnold Dune Field based on VNIR (visible-near-infrared) and MIR (mid-infrared) orbital spectral measurements shows high fidelity to in situ CheMin mineralogical analyses. Abstract

Tridymite, a SiO2 mineral that crystallizes at low pressures and high temperatures (>870 °C) from high-SiO2 materials, was detected at high concentrations in a sedimentary mudstone in Gale crater, Mars. Mineralogy and abundance were determined by X-ray diffraction using the Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument on the Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity. Terrestrial tridymite is commonly associated with silicic volcanism where high temperatures and high-silica magmas prevail, so this occurrence is the first in situ mineralogical evidence for martian silicic volcanism. Multistep processes, including high-temperature alteration of silica-rich residues of acid sulfate leaching, are alternate formation pathways for martian tridymite but are less likely. The unexpected discovery of tridymite is further evidence of the complexity of igneous petrogenesis on Mars, with igneous evolution to high-SiO2 compositions.
