1. Multi-frequency steady-state visual evoked potential dataset

Abstract: The Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) is a widely used modality in Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). Existing research has demonstrated the capabilities of SSVEP that use single frequencies for each target in various applications with relatively small numbers of commands required in the BCI. Multi-frequency SSVEP has been developed to extend the capability of single-frequency SSVEP to tasks that involve large numbers of commands. However, the development on multi-frequency SSVEP methodologies is falling behind compared to the number of studies with single-frequency SSVEP. This dataset was constructed to promote research in multi-frequency SSVEP by making SSVEP signals collected with different frequency stimulation settings publicly available. In this dataset, SSVEPs were collected from 35 participants using single-, dual-, and tri-frequency stimulation and with three different multi-frequency stimulation variants.

3. Effect of alpha range activity on SSVEP decoding in brain-computer interfaces

Abstract: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) facilitate direct communication between the brain and external devices. For BCI technology to be commercialized for wide scale applications, BCIs should be accurate, efficient, and exhibit consistency in performance for a wide variety of users. A core challenge is the physiological and anatomical differences amongst people, which causes a high variability amongst participants in BCI studies. Hence, it becomes necessary to analyze the mechanisms causing this variability and address them by improving the decoding algorithms. In this paper, a publicly available steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) dataset is analyzed to study the effect of SSVEP flicker on the endogenous alpha power and the subsequent overall effect on the classification accuracy of the participants. It was observed that the participants with classification accuracy below 95% showed increased alpha power in their brain activities. Incorrect prediction in the decoding algorithm was observed a maximum number of times when the predicted frequency was in the range 9-12 Hz. We conclude that frequencies between 9-12 Hz may result in below par performance in some participants when canonical correlation analysis is used for classification.Clinical relevance-If alpha-band frequencies are used for SSVEP stimulation, alpha power interference in EEG may alter BCI accuracy for some users.

4. Predictive Shared Control of Robotic Arms Using Simulated Brain-Computer Interface Inputs

Abstract: Low decoding accuracy makes brain-computer interface (BCI) control of a robotic arm difficult. Shared control (SC) can overcome limitations of a BCI by leveraging external sensor data and generating commands to assist the user. Our study explored whether reaching targets with a robot end-effector was easier using SC rather than direct control (DC). We simulated a motor imagery BCI using a joystick with noise introduced to explicitly control interface accuracy to be 65% or 79%. Compared to DC, our prediction-based implementation of SC led to a significant reduction in the trajectory length of successful reaches for 4 (3) out of 5 targets using the 65% (79%) accurate interface, with failure rates being equivalent to DC for 2 (1) out of 5 targets. Therefore, this implementation of SC is likely to improve reaching efficiency but at the cost of more failures. Additionally, the NASA Task Load Index results suggest SC reduced user workload.Clinical relevance-Shared control can minimise the impact of BCI decoder errors on robot motion, making robotic arm control using noninvasive BCIs more viable.

5. Orthogonal Time Frequency Space and Predictive Beamforming-Enabled URLLC in Vehicular Networks

Abstract: To fulfill the requirements of future intelligent transportation system in 6G era, ultra-reliable and low-latency vehicular communications is of great importance. In high-mobility scenarios, the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation may fail to work due to high Doppler spreads. Moreover, the dynamic network topology imposes challenges on aligning the beams in multiple antenna systems. In this context, this article introduces a new orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) and sensing-assisted predictive beamforming framework for supporting reliable and low-latency vehicular communications. In particular, we will first overview the OTFS modulation scheme, which performs data transmission in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain and discuss its superiority in improving communication reliability in vehicular networks. Then the sensing-assisted predictive beamforming scheme will be introduced, which does not rely on dedicated pilots for beam pairing, leading to very low overhead and latency. Benefiting from the DD channel representation, we briefly discuss the potential of channel prediction. Lastly, the challenges and future research directions are summarized.

6. Efficient Fusion and Reconstruction for Communication and Sensing Signals in Green IoT Networks

Abstract: Efficient and green transmission of communication and sensing (C&S) signals is a vital problem in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. In this article, we propose a variational autoencoder (VAE)-empowered deep learning (DL) network to fuse and reconstruct the integrated C&S signals. Specifically, we present a convolutional neural network to fuse the input communication data and SAR images into a combined representation, which can then be transmitted to other nodes in space-air-ground-ocean-integrated IoT networks. Instead of directly transmitting C&S data, the transmission of a fused feature vector can greatly save network resources and reduce network burden. Then, a mirrored deconvolutional network is constructed to recover C&S data from the transmitted feature representation. An end-to-end unsupervised training strategy is considered to train the proposed DL network without any label information and human labor. Qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed approach for transmitting and reconstructing integrated C&S signals. Further analysis on hyperparameter sensitivity and loss functions verifies the necessity and efficiency of the components in the proposed DL model. Note that the proposed efficient fusion and reconstruction schemes for C&S signals may provide the convenience to information sharing under the distributed scenarios.

9. Design of few-layer carbon nitride/BiFeO3 composites for efficient organic pollutant photodegradation.

Abstract: Heterojunction-driven photocatalysis can degrade various organic pollutants, and developing carbon nitride-based composite photocatalysts is of great significance and gains growing interest. In this study, a two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets/BiFeO3 (GCNNs/BiFeO3) Z-scheme heterojunction has been synthesized through the electrostatic spinning and post-calcination The obtained GCNNs/BiFeO3 nanofibers show large surface contact between GCNNs the and BiFeO3 nanostructures. The Z-scheme heterojunction shows a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance, which could degrade 94% of tetracycline (TC) and 88% of Rhodamine B (RhB) under LED visible light irradiation in 150 min. Radical trapping experiments demonstrate the effective construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions, and •O2- and h+ are the main active species in the photocatalytic degradation process. This study realizes a novel nanostructured GCNNs/BiFeO3 heterojunction for photodegradation applications, which would guide the design of next-generation efficient photocatalysts.

10. Frequency set selection for multi-frequency steady-state visual evoked potential-based brain-computer interfaces

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Multi-frequency steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) stimulation and decoding methods enable the representation of a large number of visual targets in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, unlike traditional single-frequency SSVEP, multi-frequency SSVEP is not yet widely used. One of the key reasons is that the redundancy in the input options requires an additional selection process to define an effective set of frequencies for the interface. This study investigates systematic frequency set selection methods. METHODS: An optimization strategy based on the analysis of the frequency components in the resulting multi-frequency SSVEP is proposed, investigated and compared to existing methods, which are constructed based on the analysis of the stimulation (input) signals. We hypothesized that minimizing the occurrence of common sums in the multi-frequency SSVEP improves the performance of the interface, and that selection by pairs further increases the accuracy compared to selection by frequencies. An experiment with 12 participants was conducted to validate the hypotheses. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in decoding accuracy with the proposed optimization strategy based on multi-frequency SSVEP features compared to conventional techniques. Both hypotheses were validated by the experiments. CONCLUSION: Performing selection by pairs and minimizing the number of common sums in selection by pairs are effective ways to select suitable frequency sets that improve multi-frequency SSVEP-based BCI accuracies. SIGNIFICANCE: This study provides guidance on frequency set selection in multi-frequency SSVEP. The proposed method in this study shows significant improvement in BCI performance (decoding accuracy) compared to existing methods in the literature.

11. Adversarial learning and decomposition-based domain generalization for face anti-spoofing

Abstract: Face anti-spoofing (FAS) plays a critical role in the face recognition community for securing the face presentation attacks. Many works have been proposed to regard FAS as a domain generalization problem for robust deployment in real-world scenarios. However, existing methods focus on extracting intrinsic spoofing cues to improve the generalization ability, yet neglect to train a robust classifier. In this paper, we propose a framework to improve the generalization ability of face anti-spoofing in two folds:) a generalized feature space is obtained via aggregation of all live faces while dispersing each domain’s spoof faces; and) a domain agnostic classifier is trained through low-rank decomposition. Specifically, a Common Specific Decomposition for Specific (CSD-S) layer is deployed in the last layer of the network to select common features while discarding domain-specific ones among multiple source domains. The above-mentioned two components are integrated into an end-to-end framework, ensuring the generalization ability to unseen scenarios. The extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art results on four public datasets, including CASIA-MFSD, MSU-MFSD, Replay-Attack, and OULU-NPU.

Abstract: Background: Resistant hypertension is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The endothelin pathway has been implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension, but it is currently not targeted therapeutically, thereby leaving this relevant pathophysiological pathway unopposed with currently available drugs. The aim of the study was to assess the blood pressure lowering efficacy of the dual endothelin antagonist aprocitentan in patients with resistant hypertension. Methods: PRECISION was a multicentre, blinded, randomised, parallel-group, phase 3 study, which was done in hospitals or research centres in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. Patients were eligible for randomisation if their sitting systolic blood pressure was 140 mm Hg or higher despite taking standardised background therapy consisting of three antihypertensive drugs, including a diuretic. The study consisted of three sequential parts: part 1 was the 4-week double-blind, randomised, and placebo-controlled part, in which patients received aprocitentan 12·5 mg, aprocitentan 25 mg, or placebo in a 1:1:1 ratio; part 2 was a 32-week single (patient)-blind part, in which all patients received aprocitentan 25 mg; and part 3 was a 12-week double-blind, randomised, and placebo-controlled withdrawal part, in which patients were re-randomised to aprocitentan 25 mg or placebo in a 1:1 ratio. The primary and key secondary endpoints were changes in unattended office systolic blood pressure from baseline to week 4 and from withdrawal baseline to week 40, respectively. Secondary endpoints included 24-h ambulatory blood pressure changes. The study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03541174. Findings: The PRECISION study was done from June 18, 2018, to April 25, 2022. 1965 individuals were screened and 730 were randomly assigned. Abstract: Target classification in foliage environment is a challenging task in realistic due to the high-clutter background and unsettled weather. To detect a particular target, e.g., human, under such an environment, is an indispensable technique with significant application value. Traditional method such as computer vision techniques is hardly leveraged since the working condition is limited. Therefore, in this paper, we attempt to tackle human detection by using the radio frequency (RF) signal with a device-free sensing. To this end, we propose a differential evolution flower pollination algorithm support vector machine (DEFPA-SVM) approach to detect human among other targets, e.g., iron cupboard and wooden board. This task can be formally described as a target classification problem. In our experiment, the proposed DEFPA-SVM can effectively attain the best performance compared to other classical multi-target classification models and achieve a faster convergent speed than the traditional FPA-SVM.

15. The bioelectrochemical synthesis of high-quality carbon dots with strengthened electricity output and excellent catalytic performance

Abstract: © 2019 The Royal Society of Chemistry. The emergence of microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology that can effectively recycle renewable energy from organic pollutants has been regarded as a promising and environmentally friendly route that could be widely used in numerous fields. Here, a novel sustainable self-energy conversion system was successfully constructed to renewably synthesize carbon dots (CDs) via in situ coupling with a MFC system. Interestingly, the generation of CDs was found to largely enhance the electricity production performance of the MFC. Lowerature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic measurements and electrochemical characterization analysis results confirmed that the as-prepared CDs exhibited wide-conversion fluorescence properties and exposed carbon-rich active oxygen sites, and demonstrated a suitable band gap as well as excellent electrocatalytic performance. As a result, the prepared CDs possess high photo-bioelectrocatalytic activity for efficient H 2 production, reaching 9.58 μmol h -1 . Remarkably, CD-derived photocatalytic ink presented excellent contaminant elimination activity at the solid-solid interface. Thus, this work will provide a new platform for catalyst construction via a bio-assisted method towards the next generation of nano-photocatalytic inks for indoor contaminant removal.

16. Oxygen Vacancy-rich Porous Co3O4 Nanosheets toward Boosted NO Reduction by CO and CO Oxidation: Insights into the Structure-Activity Relationship and Performance Enhancement Mechanism

Oxygen vacancy-rich porous Co3O4 nanosheets (OV-Co3O4) with diverse surface oxygen vacancy contents were synthesized via facile surface reduction and applied to NO reduction by CO and CO oxidation. The structure-activity relationship between surface oxygen vacancies and catalytic performance was systematically investigated. By combining Raman, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and O2-temperature programmed desorption, it was found that the efficient surface reduction leads to the presence of more surface oxygen vacancies and thus distinctly enhance the surface oxygen amount and mobility of OV-Co3O4. The electron transfer towards Co sites was promoted by surface oxygen vacancies with higher content. Compared with the pristine porous Co3O4 nanosheets, the presence of more surface oxygen vacancies is beneficial for the catalytic performance enhancement for NO reduction by CO and CO oxidation. The OV-Co3O4 obtained in 0.05 mol L-1 NaBH4 solution (Co3O4-0.05) exhibited the best catalytic activity, achieving 100% NO conversion at 175 °C in NO reduction by CO and 100% CO conversion at 100 °C in CO oxidation, respectively. Co3O4-0.05 exhibited outstanding catalytic stability and resistance to high gas hour space velocity in both reactions. Combining in situ DRIFTS results, the enhanced performance of OV-Co3O4 for NO reduction by CO should be attributed to the promoted formation and transformation of dinitrosyl species and -NCO species at lower and higher temperatures. The enhanced performance of OV-Co3O4 for CO oxidation is due to the promotion of oxygen activation ability, surface oxygen mobility, as well as the enhanced CO2 desorption ability. The results indicate that the direct regulation of surface oxygen vacancies could be an efficient way to evidently enhance the catalytic performance for NO reduction by CO and CO oxidation.

17. Enhancing interfacial charge transfer on novel 3D/1D multidimensional MoS2/TiO2 heterojunction toward efficient photoelectrocatalytic removal of levofloxacin

Abstract: Structure-controlled visible light driven photo-anode with high catalytic performance, plays important roles in environmental pollutants treatment. In this work, a mild hydrothermal assisted anodization approach has been reported to design an integrated self-assembled 3D flower-like MoS2/1D TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) hierarchical electrode. The constructed multidimensional electrode not only broadened the absorption spectrum response range but also promoted rapidly electron-hole pairs separation, exhibiting the excellent photoelectron catalytic (PEC) performance and stability in the degradation of target pollutants, which the photocurrent conversion efficiency was 6.5 times higher than that of pure TiO2. Furtherly, a comprehensive mechanism was proposed to explain the charge transfer on the interface of intimate integration of 3D/1D hybrid nanostructure towards PEC properties in terms of the energy band structures and DFT. Furthermore, the photo-generated active species ([rad]OH and [rad]O2-) have been proved by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and fluorescence probe over the composites. Thus, this work could provide an effective strategy to design multidimensional coupled heterojunction materials toward solar energy conversion for environmental purification.

Abstract: Emerging high performance computing (HPC) systems are expected to be deployed with an unprecedented level of complexity due to a deep system memory and storage hierarchy. Efficient and scalable methods of data management and movement through this hierarchy is critical for scientific applications using exascale systems. Moving toward new paradigms for scalable I/O in the extreme-scale era, we introduce novel object-centric data abstractions and storage mechanisms that take advantage of the deep storage hierarchy, named Proactive Data Containers (PDC). In this paper, we formulate object-centric PDCs and their mappings in different levels of the storage hierarchy. PDC adopts a client-server architecture with a set of servers managing data movement across storage layers. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PDC system, we have measured performance of benchmarks and I/O kernels from scientific simulation and analysis applications using PDC programming interface, and compared the results with existing highly tuned I/O libraries. Using asynchronous I/O along with data and metadata optimizations, PDC demonstrates up to 23× speedup over HDF5 and PLFS in writing and reading data from a plasma physics simulation. PDC achieves comparable performance with HDF5 and PLFS in reading and writing data of a single timestep at small scale, and outperforms them at a scale of larger than 10K cores. In contrast to existing storage systems, PDC offers user-space data management with the flexibility to allocate the number of PDC servers depending on the workload.

Abstract: BACKGROUND High‐molecular‐weight glutenin subunits (HMW‐GSs) have important effects on bread‐making quality. Allelic variations of HMW‐GS in bread wheat varieties contribute in different ways to dough properties and bread volume. However, no systematic analysis has been done on the effects of allelic variation on bread‐crumb structure, an important parameter when evaluating bread‐making quality. In this study, seven Glu‐1 deletion lines and one intact line harboring different encoding loci and derived from a cross between two spring wheat cultivars were used to investigate the contribution of a single Glu‐1 locus, or combination of Glu‐1 loci, to the crumb structure. RESULTS Deletion of HMW‐GS locus combinations resulted in a decline in slice size, brightness, and fineness of the bread crumb. A desirable crumb structure correlated well with preferred subunit combinations: high levels of GMPs, superior dough properties, and loaf volume. The effects of the HMW‐GS combinations were ranked as Dx5 + Dy10 > Bx17 + By18 > Ax1 + Null. The Ax1 + Null allele affected the crumb structure by interacting with the Bx17 + By18 or Dx5 + Dy10. CONCLUSION High‐molecular‐weight glutenin subunits had significant effects on the loaf volume and crumb structure; varying effects from different subunit combinations were observed. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

RESULTS Deletion of HMW‐GS locus combinations resulted in a decline in slice size, brightness, and fineness of the bread crumb. A desirable crumb structure correlated well with preferred subunit combinations: high levels of GMPs, superior dough properties, and loaf volume. The effects of the HMW‐GS combinations were ranked as Dx5 + Dy10 > Bx17 + By18 > Ax1 + Null. The Ax1 + Null allele affected the crumb structure by interacting with the Bx17 + By18 or Dx5 + Dy10. CONCLUSION High‐molecular‐weight glutenin subunits had significant effects on the loaf volume and crumb structure; varying effects from different subunit combinations were observed. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

22. Improvement of catalytic activity over Mn-modified CeZrOx catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3

Abstract: A series of MnCeZrOxmixed oxide catalysts were facilely synthesized using the impregnation-NH3·H2O coprecipitation method and tested for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3. Doping manganese significantly improved the catalytic activity and the best performing SCR catalyst, Mn0.25Ce0.5Zr0.25Ox, was shown to achieve NO conversion > 80% in the temperature range (60–350 °C), with the denitration effect up to 50% at room temperature (conditions: [NO] = [NH3] = 500 ppm, [O2] = 5 vol%, He as balance, flow rate = 100 mL/min, GHSV = 40, 000 h-1). Characterization of the catalyst using BET, XRD, XPS, H2-TPR, and in-situ FTIR proved that the improved SCR activity may be attributed to the large surface area, great reduction ability and increased amount of surface adsorbed oxygen afforded by the introduction of manganese. The SCR reaction mechanisms were also investigated by analyzing in-situ FTIR spectra and the SCR reaction pathway over the Mn0.25Ce0.5Zr0.25Oxcatalyst was shown to mostly follow the E-R mechanism.

Abstract: InAs/InGaSb superlattice (SL) materials are an excellent candidate for infrared photodiodes with cut-off wavelengths beyond 15 micrometer, i.e. in the very long infrared wavelength (VLWIR) range. There are relatively few options for high performance infrared detectors to cover wavelengths longer than 15 micrometer, especially for operating temperatures above 15K. There are a variety of possible superlattice designs that will cover the VLWIR wavelength range, including designs with and without indium alloying of the GaSb layers. Transport modeling has shown that alloy scattering should not be a dominant factor in these superlattices so our focus is on designs with 25% indium in the gallium antimonide to achieve energy band gaps less than 50 meV with a superlattice period on the order of 68 A. Similar to the work reported on InAs/GaSb LWIR and VLWIR superlattices, our designs employ InGaSb layers less than 7 monolayers in width. While the superlattice designs are strain balanced to the GaSb substrate, care was also taken to minimize strain spikes in the interfacial regions. High resolution transmission electron microscope images were analyzed to create strain mapping profiles of the SL layers and interfaces. By focusing on a narrow set of VLWIR SL designs, the deposition parameters for the molecular beam epitaxial SL growth could be carefully optimized., Prepared in collaboration with University of Dayton, Dept. of Physics, Dayton, OH.

Abstract: This research develops an enhanced material-classification algorithm to discriminate between metals and dielectrics using passive polarimetric imagery degraded by atmospheric turbulence. To improve the performance of the existing technique for near-normal collection geometries, the proposed algorithm adaptively updates the degree of linear polarization (DoLP) priors as more information becomes available about the scene. Three adaptive approaches are presented. The higher-order super-Gaussian method fits the distribution of DoLP estimates with a sum of two super-Gaussian functions to update the priors. The Gaussian method computes the classification threshold value, from which the priors are updated, by fitting the distribution of DoLP estimates with a sum of two Gaussian functions. Lastly, the distribution-averaging method approximates the threshold value by finding the mean of the DoLP distribution. The experimental results confirm that the new adaptive method significantly extends the collection geometry range of validity for the existing technique., The original document contains color images.

Abstract: We analyze the large-scale two-dimensional sidereal anisotropy of multi-TeV cosmic rays by Tibet Air Shower Array, with the data taken from 1999 November to 2008 December. To explore temporal variations of the anisotropy, the data set is divided into nine intervals, each in a time span of about one year. The sidereal anisotropy of magnitude about 0.1% appears fairly stable from year to year over the entire observation period of nine years. Abstract: Using the Tibet-III air shower array, we search for TeV gamma-rays from 27 potential Galactic sources in the early list of bright sources obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope at energies above 100 MeV. Among them, we observe 7 sources instead of the expected 0.61 sources at a significance of 2 sigma or more excess. The chance probability from Poisson statistics would be estimated to be 3.8 x 10^-6. If the excess distribution observed by the Tibet-III array has a density gradient toward the Galactic plane, the expected number of sources may be enhanced in chance association. Then, the chance probability rises slightly, to 1.2 x 10^-5, based on a simple Monte Carlo simulation. These low chance probabilities clearly show that the Fermi bright Galactic sources have statistically significant correlations with TeV gamma-ray excesses. We also find that all 7 sources are associated with pulsars, and 6 of them are coincident with sources detected by the Milagro experiment at a significance of 3 sigma or more at the representative energy of 35 TeV. The significance maps observed by the Tibet-III air shower array around the Fermi sources, which are coincident with the Milagro >=3sigma sources, are consistent with the Milagro observations. Abstract: We develop a model anisotropy best-fitting to the two-dimensional sky-map of multi-TeV galactic cosmic ray (GCR) intensity observed with the Tibet III air shower (AS) array. By incorporating a pair of intensity excesses in the hydrogen deflection plane (HDP) suggested by Gurnett et al., together with the uni-directional and bi-directional flows for reproducing the observed global feature, this model successfully reproduces the observed sky-map including the "skewed" feature of the excess intensity from the heliotail direction, whose physical origin has long remained unknown. These additional excesses are modeled by a pair of the northern and southern Gaussian distributions, each placed ~50 degree away from the heliotail direction. The amplitude of the southern excess is as large as ~0.2 %, more than twice the amplitude of the northern excess. Abstract: Using the Tibet-III air shower array, we search for TeV gamma-rays from 27 potential Galactic sources in the early list of bright sources obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope at energies above 100 MeV. Among them, we observe 7 sources instead of the expected 0.61 sources at a significance of 2 sigma or more excess. The chance probability from Poisson statistics would be estimated to be 3.8 x 10^-6. If the excess distribution observed by the Tibet-III array has a density gradient toward the Galactic plane, the expected number of sources may be enhanced in chance association. Then, the chance probability rises slightly, to 1.2 x 10^-5, based on a simple Monte Carlo simulation. These low chance probabilities clearly show that the Fermi bright Galactic sources have statistically significant correlations with TeV gamma-ray excesses. We also find that all 7 sources are associated with pulsars, and 6 of them are coincident with sources detected by the Milagro experiment at a significance of 3 sigma or more at the representative energy of 35 TeV. The significance maps observed by the Tibet-III air shower array around the Fermi sources, which are coincident with the Milagro >=3sigma sources, are consistent with the Milagro observations. Abstract: We develop a model anisotropy best-fitting to the two-dimensional sky-map of multi-TeV galactic cosmic ray (GCR) intensity observed with the Tibet III air shower (AS) array. By incorporating a pair of intensity excesses in the hydrogen deflection plane (HDP) suggested by Gurnett et al., together with the uni-directional and bi-directional flows for reproducing the observed global feature, this model successfully reproduces the observed sky-map including the "skewed" feature of the excess intensity from the heliotail direction, whose physical origin has long remained unknown. These additional excesses are modeled by a pair of the northern and southern Gaussian distributions, each placed ~50 degree away from the heliotail direction. The amplitude of the southern excess is as large as ~0.2 %, more than twice the amplitude of the northern excess. This implies that the Tibet AS experiment discovered for the first time a clear evidence of the significant modulation of GCR intensity in the heliotail and the asymmetric heliosphere., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, 31st International Cosmic Ray Conference (Lodz, Poland), 2009

Abstract: Using the data taken from Tibet II High Density (HD) Array (1997 February-1999 September) and Tibet-III array (1999 November-2005 November), our previous northern sky survey for TeV $\gamma-$ray point sources has now been updated by a factor of 2.8 improved statistics. From $0.0^{\circ}$ to $60.0^{\circ}$ in declination (Dec) range, no new TeV $\gamma-$ray point sources with sufficiently high significance were identified while the well-known Crab Nebula and Mrk421 remain to be the brightest TeV $\gamma-$ray sources within the field of view of the Tibet air shower array. Abstract: The amplitude of the Compton-Getting (CG) anisotropy contains the power-law index of the cosmic-ray energy spectrum. Based on this relation and using the Tibet air-shower array data, we measure the cosmic-ray spectral index to be $-3.03 \pm 0.55_{stat} \pm < 0.62_{syst}$ between 6 TeV and 40 TeV, consistent with $-$2.7 from direct energy spectrum measurements. Potentially, this CG anisotropy analysis can be utilized to confirm the astrophysical origin of the ``knee'' against models for non-standard hadronic interactions in the atmosphere., Comment: accepted to ApJL

We have a plan to add a large muon detector array to it for the purpose of increasing its sensitivity to cosmic gamma rays in the 100 TeV energy region by discriminating them from cosmic-ray hadrons. We have deduced the attainable sensitivity of the muon detector array using our Monte Carlo simulation. Abstract: The amplitude of the Compton-Getting (CG) anisotropy contains the power-law index of the cosmic-ray energy spectrum. Based on this relation and using the Tibet air-shower array data, we measure the cosmic-ray spectral index to be $-3.03 \pm 0.55_{stat} \pm < 0.62_{syst}$ between 6 TeV and 40 TeV, consistent with $-$2.7 from direct energy spectrum measurements. Potentially, this CG anisotropy analysis can be utilized to confirm the astrophysical origin of the ``knee'' against models for non-standard hadronic interactions in the atmosphere., Comment: accepted to ApJL

Abstract: The Tibet air shower array, which has an effective area of 37,000 square meters and is located at 4300 m in altitude, has been observing air showers induced by cosmic rays with energies above a few TeV. We are planning to add a large muon detector array to it for the purpose of increasing its sensitivity to cosmic gamma rays in the 100 TeV (10 - 1000 TeV) energy region by discriminating them from cosmic-ray hadrons. 45. Exercise induces isoform-specific increase in 5'AMP-activated protein kinase activity in human skeletal muscle

Abstract: The 5'AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is stimulated by contractile activity in rat skeletal muscle. AMPK has emerged as an important signaling intermediary in the regulation of cell metabolism being linked to exercise-induced changes in muscle glucose and fatty acid metabolism. In the present study, we determined the effects of exercise on isoform-specific AMPK activity (alpha1 and alpha2) in human skeletal muscle. Needle biopsies of vastus lateralis muscle were obtained from seven healthy subjects at rest, after 20 and 60 min of cycle ergometer exercise at 70% of VO(2)max, and 30 min following the 60 min exercise bout. In comparison to the resting state, AMPK alpha2 activity significantly increased at 20 and 60 min of exercise, and remained at a higher level with 30 min of recovery. AMPK alpha1 activity tended to slightly decrease with 20 min of exercise at 70%VO(2)max; however, the change was not statistically significant. AMPK alpha1 activities were at basal levels at 60 min of exercise and 30 min of recovery. On a separate day, the same subjects exercised for 20 min at 50% of VO(2)max. Exercise at this intensity did not change alpha2 activity, and similar to exercise at 70% of VO(2)max, there was no significant change in alpha1 activity. In conclusion, exercise at a higher intensity for only 20 min leads to increases in AMPK alpha2 activity but not alpha1 activity. These results suggest that the alpha2-containing AMPK complex, rather than alpha1, may be involved in the metabolic responses to exercise in human skeletal muscle., Funding Agency:NIAMS NIH HHS

49. Adaptive and robust fractional gain based interpolatory cubature Kalman filter

Abstract: In this study, we put forward the robust fractional gain based interpolatory cubature Kalman filter (FGBICKF) and the adaptive FGBICKF (AFGBICKF) for the development of the state estimators for stochastic nonlinear dynamics system. FGBICKF introduces a fractional gain to interpolatory cubature Kalman filter to increase the robustness of state estimation. AFGBICKF is developed to enhance the state estimation adaptive to stochastic nonlinear dynamics system with unknown process noise covariance through recursive estimation. The simulations on re-entry target tracking system have shown that the performance of FGBICKF is superior to that of cubature Kalman filter and interpolatory cubature Kalman filter, and standard deviation of FGBICKF is closer to posterior Cramér-Rao lower bound. Moreover, our simulations have also demonstrated that AFGBICKF remains stable even when the initial process noise covariance increase, proving its adaptiveness, robustness, and effectiveness on state estimation.
