The paper shows that visions of the future can be used as a predictor of cooperation and division between actors in their efforts to shape the institutional environment, specifically policy in socio-technical systems. Accordingly, the paper suggests a new method to analyze visions: a virtual solution space in which visions can be grouped according to their similarity. The similarity of visions is calculated based on cluster analysis. Empirically, the paper focuses on the networks between industry associations in the heating transition in the German building sector. It shows that actors whose visions of future socio-technical system developments overlap are more likely to cooperate with each other. It also suggests that the fragmentation of the residential heating system in Germany is reflected in a fragmented actor network. Furthermore, the authors show that shared technological interests can outweigh similar visions. These fragmented technological interests hinder meaningful cooperation. This is potentially one reason why a powerful low-carbon heating coalition in Germany that could facilitate an accelerated deployment of low-carbon heat systems by driving policy change has not emerged to date. The paper contributes to a better understanding of how niche actors in sustainability transitions use their agency and specifically strategize to bring about institutional change. In this respect, the authors discuss how differing levels of system-fragmentation influence transition dynamics in general and institutional change dynamics in particular.

The decarbonizing the heat sector is a major challenge in the energy transition in Germany and elsewhere. District heating systems could play an important role in this context. However, the diffusion of the technology in Germany has been very slow. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the technological innovation system (TIS) to enhance understandings of the impediments to the diffusion of non-urban district heating systems. Due to its strong local context dependence, district heating can be understood as a configurational technology, and the TIS in which it is embedded as a configurational TIS. The paper contributes to the literature by developing policy suggestions that could lead to an acceleration of the diffusion of locally context-dependent technologies. The author recommends that policymaking in configurational TIS should aim at designing smart innovation system structures that can manage a high level of context specificity and facilitate vertical and horizontal knowledge exchange.

The technological innovation systems (TIS) literature and the strand of system building studies explain the role of networks in the strategic creation of favorable institutional conditions for sustainability transitions. To better understand collective system building, it is important to delve into the formation of networks composed of diverse organizations, including firms, as well as government and civil society organizations, such as alliances. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework for the study of factors that influence the formation of alliances, as well as the contribution of alliances to system building. To illustrate our analytical framework empirically, we conduct a case study of the Green Protein Alliance (GPA), a distinctive example of an alliance network aiming to promote the transition to plant-based diets in the Netherlands. The results highlight the importance of organizational motives, organizational resources, and relationships for the formation of alliances. These factors also influence the type and course of system building strategies, as well as the creation of system-level resources. Moreover, we argue that alliances between diverse types of organizations can provide opportunities to accelerate transitions by promoting the adoption of potentially beneficial innovations and sustainable consumption.

In this paper, we study sustainability transitions in agriculture and highlight several elements that distinguish transition dynamics in this sector from those more frequently studied in the socio-technical transitions literature. Our assumption is that ecological dimensions of agricultural systems affect transition dynamics. We illustrate this by focusing on two central characteristics related to biodiversity conservation: place-based embeddedness and the public goods’ character of biodiversity. A qualitative, multiple-case study was conducted on the Dutch dairy sector by carrying out 22 in-depth interviews. We show how change in the agricultural sector is strongly geographically embedded and dependent on regime actors who need to be enabled and incentivized to partake in the transition process. Due to the public goods’ character of biodiversity, there is a strong focus on the development of institutional novelty. Dynamics of change show a specific fit between ecological conditions and innovation.

In the field of sustainability transitions, temporality has recently received increased attention, specifically with regard to understanding acceleration of transitions. Acceleration of sustainability transitions is needed, to minimize the risks of global crises, and so the question is how these transitions can be accelerated. To answer this question, we use the technological innovation systems (TIS) approach to better understand the underlying processes. The central argument of this paper is that the pace of development in TIS, which ultimately have an impact on sustainability transitions, strongly depends on the local context in which the technologies are embedded in. Technologies that are little context-dependent can be produced in series; they do not need to adapt to local contingencies and can be easily substituted by more efficient and up-to-date technology – in this paper we refer to these as generic technologies. Conversely, technologies that are strongly dependent on the local context always need to be configured with regard to specific local contingencies – we refer to these as configurational technologies. This differentiation has repercussions on the defining pillars of technological innovation systems: Higher local context dependence slows down the pace of development of configurational TIS. The differentiation is illustrated by comparing electricity and heat innovation systems in Germany. An analysis based on literature as well as empirical case studies shows that the rather generically structured Solar PV and onshore wind are developing faster toward decarbonization than the configurationally structured heat TIS. The distinction between generic technological innovation systems and configurational technological innovation systems is helpful to better understand innovation system development and design supportive policies.

The growing demand for proteins for human consumption worldwide makes significant contributions to environmental and health problems. This challenge drives innovation efforts globally to devise and promote plant-based alternatives to meat products. The Technological Innovation System (TIS) is a well-established approach to analyse the development and diffusion of sustainable technologies. Innovation studies also emphasise the role of the regional context to explain how certain firms develop a competitive advantage in a globalised economy, and why innovations diffuse unevenly across regions. In this research, the innovation systems for plant proteins in two European regions with proclaimed ambitions to support the protein transition, namely the East Netherlands and the Hauts-de-France. To that effect, the TIS was complemented with regional context elements from the Regional Innovation System (RIS) theory was used. Findings identify key barriers for each innovation system, based on their development stage. In East Netherlands, innovation is undermined by the lack of common objectives and vision to develop plant proteins across the value chain, and by a lack of resources to increase production capabilities. In Hauts-de-France, the entrepreneurial activities and development of knowledge need to be stimulated, in particular in food technology. Common issues pertain to the fragmented value chain, specific knowledge gaps on novel sources of protein, and understanding how to better engage with consumers. Based on these findings, recommendations are drawn to overcome systemic barriers in East Netherlands and identify areas of collaboration with the Hauts-de-France to further accelerate the protein transition.

Objective: Families of ICU patients have a pressing need for information: they find themselves suddenly in a complex technical environment often because of a life-threatening illness of a loved one. Some evidence suggests that specific communication tools (like websites or brochures) could improve the experience of ICU families. Design: Randomized, multicenter, stepped wedge trial for large-scale assessment of the effectiveness of a multitasking intervention to improve communication with families of critically ill patients. Main outcome: correct understanding of the prognosis. Secondary outcomes: correct understanding of medical treatments, prevalence of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms in the first ICU week. Prevalence of PTSD 6 months from ICU discharge. Empathy and burnout among ICU staff. Prevalence of refusals for tissues/organ donation, and medical claims. Subjects: 2100 ICU relatives of critically ill patients. Interventions: The intervention employs specific tools especially designed to raise the correctness of information and to improve the quality of communication: a website presenting the ICU world and justifying the relatives' emotions, with a webpage specifically dedicated to each participating ICU; a standard brochure; eight posters for the families' waiting room and a signboard for the ICU door. Measurements and main results: The study plans to assess these materials in up to 300 Italian ICUs that will participate, according to a five waves program, each one with randomized starting order. This way the effect of the intervention will be evaluated simultaneously. Conclusion: This is an educational study, aiming to spread good medical practices, while also verifying their real effectiveness in a large number of ICUs. Trial registration number: NCT03438175.

Several variants in the KIT, PAX3 and MITF genes have previously been associated with white markings in horses. In this study, we examined eight variants of these genes in 70 Menorca Purebred horses (PRMe, only black solid-coloured horses) and 70 Spanish Purebred horses (PRE, different coat colour patterns) that were scored for the extent of white markings. A maximum-likelihood chi-square test, logistic regression model and ridge regression analyses showed that a missense mutation (p.Arg682His) in KIT was associated with white facial markings (P<0.05) and with total white markings (P<0.05) in PRMe horses. The relative contribution of this variant to white markings in PRMe horses was estimated at 47.6% (head) and 43.4% (total score). In PRE horses, this variant was also associated with hindlimb scores (P<0.05) with a relative contribution of 41.2%. The g.20147039C>T intronic variant located 29.9kb downstream from the transcription start site of the MITF gene was associated with less white markings on forelimbs (P<0.05) in PRMe horses, with a relative contribution of 63.9%, whereas in PRE horses this variant was associated with white facial markings (P<0.05), with a relative contribution of 63.9%. No significant associations were found for PAX3 variants in these breeds. These results show that KIT and MITF variants are involved in the white marking patterns of both PRMe and PRE horses, providing breeders with an opportunity to use genetic testing to aid in breeding for their desired level of white markings.

We introduce a series of articles reviewing various aspects of integrable models relevant to the anti-de Sitter (AdS)/conformal quantum field theory (CFT) correspondence. Topics covered in these reviews are: classical integrability, Yangian symmetry, factorized scattering, the Bethe ansatz, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, and integrable structures in (conformal) quantum field theory. In the present article we highlight how these concepts have found application in AdS/CFT, and provide a brief overview of the material contained in this series., QC 20160915

Assessing the genetic variability of plant performance under heat and drought scenarios can contribute to reduce the negative effects of climate change. We propose here an approach that consisted of (1) clustering time courses of environmental variables simulated by a crop model in current (35 years × 55 sites) and future conditions into six scenarios of temperature and water deficit as experienced by maize (Zea mays L.) plants; (2) performing 29 field experiments in contrasting conditions across Europe with 244 maize hybrids; (3) assigning individual experiments to scenarios based on environmental conditions as measured in each field experiment; frequencies of temperature scenarios in our experiments corresponded to future heat scenarios (+5°C); (4) analyzing the genetic variation of plant performance for each environmental scenario. Forty-eight quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of yield were identified by association genetics using a multi-environment multi-locus model. Eight and twelve QTLs were associated to tolerances to heat and drought stresses because they were specific to hot and dry scenarios, respectively, with low or even negative allelic effects in favorable scenarios. Twenty-four QTLs improved yield in favorable conditions but showed nonsignificant effects under stress; they were therefore associated with higher sensitivity. Our approach showed a pattern of QTL effects expressed as functions of environmental variables and scenarios, allowing us to suggest hypotheses for mechanisms and candidate genes underlying each QTL. It can be used for assessing the performance of genotypes and the contribution of genomic regions under current and future stress situations and to accelerate breeding for drought-prone environments. © 2016 American Society of Plant Biologists. In the contemporary ‘take-make-dispose’ economy, significant amounts and types of resources are not recycled or re-used in industrial production processes. This is also the case in the composites industry, which is experiencing a worldwide economic boom due to increased usage of composite materials in wind-energy, maritime and automotive applications. Although much has been written about the benefits of an economic system that circulates materials in closed-loops (i.e. Circular Economy), very little is known about the driving and blocking factors that determine the development process from a linear towards a circular production model. The latest insights from innovation studies propose that such sustainable industrial transformations are influenced by how the surrounding system – the Technological Innovation System (TIS) – is structured and functions. In this thesis, a TIS-approach is used to study the Innovation System around the recycling and/or-re-use of composites in the period 2015-2016. Consequently it is one of the first times TIS-research goes beyond the diffusion of technological innovations to study the development process of a sustainable industrial transformation. Through a case study several obstacles for the development of a circular production model are identified: deficient policies at the system level that are poorly aligned with (inter)national CE ambitions; limited market demand for composite recyclate due to costs and quality restrictions of various recycling technologies; and the unavailability of financial resources to develop the physical infrastructure that is necessary to carry out activities related to recycling and/or re-use technologies. Overcoming the barriers that hinder further development of a circular production model is not an easy task, but policymakers may address the identified obstacles by the deployment of policy instruments that address the outlined systemic challenges.

In this paper we introduce to the public a new linguistic atlas, PALWaM (the Little Linguistic Atlas of the Southern Walser). The atlas is peculiar for several reasons. first of all, it focusses on the non contiguous territory of the Southern Walser, a group of Highest Alemannic dialects spoken in Piedmont and Aosta Valley, previously surveyed as part of the wider Sprachatlas der Deutschen Schweiz. Secondly, it is the product of the unprecedented collaboration of both an academic scientific committee and a working group made up of speakers of the local varieties and of members of the cultural associations on the territory. Finally, from a methodological point of view, the atlas places side by side a classical descriptive chart, an interpretative chart, an etymological-historical commentary and fragments of ethnographic interviews. These features make PALWaM a rather little, but very rich linguistic atlas.
