Mercury (Hg), a neurotoxicant released primarily by anthropogenic activity, is present in all the world’s oceans, estuaries, and freshwater bodies (Giang, 2013). In addition to its toxicity to marine biota, Hg bioaccumulates within fish and other seafoods, presenting a threat to human health since fish remain important sources of protein for people across the world (Giang, 2013). Despite improvements in Hg pollution control, levels in commonly consumed marine fish such as bluefin tuna often exceed human health guidelines causing recommendations to limit fish consumption (Giang, 2013). Organic forms of Hg, such as monomethylmercury (MMHg), are more toxic than other forms and are the main causes of concern for human and ecosystem health. Various forms of Hg can transform into MMHg overtime and in certain environments. Elemental mercury (Hg(0)) can transform into different chemical species before becoming MMHg while divalent mercury (Hg(II)) can transform into MMHg through biotic methylation in the water column and sediments under specific chemical and physical conditions (Ming et al., 2019).The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) manages approximately 98 ocean dredged material disposal sites (ODMDS) around the country’s federal waters. Disposal sites are used for the disposal of nontoxic sediments that are routinely removed to maintain navigational depths in ports, harbors, and marinas, as well as to support national maritime commerce, commercial fisheries, and recreation (EPA, n.d.). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is planning to dredge federal channel segments in Newport Bay in Newport Beach, California. Based on sediment samples collected and analyzed for ocean disposal testing, the USACE project sediments were found to be high in Hg contamination (Anchor QEA, LLC., 2020). However, despite the high Hg levels, toxicity tests indicated suitability for ocean disposal at EPA’s LA-3 ODMDS located offshore of Newport Bay (Anchor QEA, LLC., 2020). The curr

Doctor of Ministry (DMin), The purpose of this project is to develop a tool that invites members of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church of Newport Beach to examine their lives in light of the congregation’s mission measures and help them to determine both areas of growth and deficiency. The tool’s narrative structure provides a framework to process the circumstances of life and the variety responses to those events that move one closer to or further from one’s destination. Once participants see the narrative arc of their lives, they will be able to make distinctions between the parts of life that are in continuity or discontinuity with the aims of the Kingdom. The opening part of this project explores the congregation of St. Andrew’s and the unique setting of Newport Beach from the perspective of the broader cultural story and highlights the ways in which this story collides with the gospel narrative. Particular attention is given to the development of the “vision frame.” This section highlights the role of mission measures in framing a functional description of a mature Christian disciple and the role small group communities play in helping disciples flourish. The second part examines relevant literature regarding the relationship between the narrative and teleology. Focus is given to the classical virtues and the role of story in the formation of the Christian community as well as the ways communities of interpretation recount and embody narrative as a means of shaping identity. Additionally, the role of spiritual disciplines as a necessary means for transformation along the journey are addressed. The final part presents the goals and plans for the curriculum. Following a presentation of the completed curriculum, the project concludes with an analysis of the timeline, resources needed, and plans for evaluation.

Waiting customers and fellow fishermen alike are helpful in rolling the dories up the beach to their positions in the market. There's always something to be done in the long hours of a dory fisherman's day. Baiting, repairing of lines, waiting on customers or getting the rid ready for tomorrow keeps the fishermen and their families busy. The beach next to the Newport Beach pier is reserved for the dory men and their equipment. Small sheds on one side are used to store much of their gear, while the baiting tables and boats are left out. There's much to talk about between the fishermen and their customers. Mrs. Mildred Van Rider cleans a halibut for Mrs. Emilie McCarty of Newport Beach, Mrs. Melba Brewer of Santa Ana and Miss Glenda Dodson of Costa Mesa. Van Rider busies himself with washing off the catch before placing them on the display shelves.; Supplementary material continues: "There's not much between a dory fisherman and a storm. The boats, just under 16 ft. in length, are specially made for this type of fishing. Henry Phegley, center, rolls his dory out of the surf onto the wooden rollers with the help of Mrs. Tom Sanders and interested bathers. Cooperation among the fishermen is one of the unwritten codes of the tradition. Much interest is shown by customers and idle passers by in the cleaning operation. Deft hands and sharp knives quickly prepare the fish for the skillet, broiler or oven. Mrs. Tom Sanders takes care of customers anxious to make their pick of the 'buying' size rock cod. Many customers select their own fish from the bottom of the boat before the catch is on the display shelves. T

Unrestricted, Sea lions have been around for about 12 million years, but lately, they are moving into human territory in Newport Harbor. Boat owners, residents and fishermen are sick of having to duke it out for turf in this posh part of town. -- But perhaps sea lions are showing up for good reasons -- the harbor is safe, and the food supply good. And while people complain about their loud barking, unsavory hygienics, and their ability to steal a fisherman's catch, humans are harming them at an alarming rate.
