The PTOLEMY experiment aims at detecting the cosmic neutrino background, generated approximately one second after the Big Bang, in accordance with Standard Cosmology. Given the extremely low energy of these neutrinos, reliable experimental detection can be accomplished through neutrino captures on beta-unstable nuclides, eliminating the need for a specific energy threshold. Tritium implanted on a carbon-based nanostructure emerges as a promising candidate among the various isotopes due to its favorable cross-section and low-endpoint energy. The Ptolemy collaboration plans to integrate a solid-state tritium source with a novel compact electromagnetic filter, based on the dynamic transverse momentum cancellation concept. This filter will be employed in conjunction with an event-based preliminary radio-frequency preselection. The measurement of neutrino mass and the exploration of light sterile neutrinos represent additional outcomes stemming from the Ptolemy experiment’s physics potential, even when utilizing smaller or intermediate-scale detectors. To finalize the conceptualization of the detector, a demonstrator prototype will be assembled and tested at LNGS in 2024. This prototype aims at addressing the challenging aspects of the Ptolemy experiment.

The ATLAS detector is installed in its experimental cavern at Point 1 of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. During Run 2 of the LHC, a luminosity of ℒ = 2 × 1034 cm-2 s-1 was routinely achieved at the start of fills, twice the design luminosity. For Run 3, accelerator improvements, notably luminosity levelling, allow sustained running at an instantaneous luminosity of ℒ = 2 × 1034 cm-2 s-1, with an average of up to 60 interactions per bunch crossing. The ATLAS detector has been upgraded to recover Run 1 single-lepton trigger thresholds while operating comfortably under Run 3 sustained pileup conditions. A fourth pixel layer 3.3 cm from the beam axis was added before Run 2 to improve vertex reconstruction and b-tagging performance. New Liquid Argon Calorimeter digital trigger electronics, with corresponding upgrades to the Trigger and Data Acquisition system, take advantage of a factor of 10 finer granularity to improve triggering on electrons, photons, taus, and hadronic signatures through increased pileup rejection. The inner muon endcap wheels were replaced by New Small Wheels with Micromegas and small-strip Thin Gap Chamber detectors, providing both precision tracking and Level-1 Muon trigger functionality. Trigger coverage of the inner barrel muon layer near one endcap region was augmented with modules integrating new thin-gap resistive plate chambers and smaller-diameter drift-tube chambers. Tile Calorimeter scintillation counters were added to improve electron energy resolution and background rejection. Upgrades to Minimum Bias Trigger Scintillators and Forward Detectors improve luminosity monitoring and enable total proton-proton cross section, diffractive physics, and heavy ion measurements. These upgrades are all compatible with operation in the much harsher environment anticipated after the High-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC and are the first steps towards preparing ATLAS for the High-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC. The full optimization of the design and operation of instruments whose functioning relies on the interaction of radiation with matter is a super-human task, due to the large dimensionality of the space of possible choices for geometry, detection technology, materials, data-acquisition, and information-extraction techniques, and the interdependence of the related parameters. On the other hand, massive potential gains in performance over standard, “experience-driven” layouts are in principle within our reach if an objective function fully aligned with the final goals of the instrument is maximized through a systematic search of the configuration space. The stochastic nature of the involved quantum processes make the modeling of these systems an intractable problem from a classical statistics point of view, yet the construction of a fully differentiable pipeline and the use of deep learning techniques may allow the simultaneous optimization of all design parameters., In this white paper, we lay down our plans for the design of a modular and versatile modeling tool for the end-to-end optimization of complex instruments for particle physics experiments as well as industrial and medical applications that share the detection of radiation as their basic ingredient. We consider a selected set of use cases to highlight the specific needs of different applications.

The PTOLEMY transverse drift filter is a new concept to enable precision analysis of the energy spectrum of electrons near the tritium beta-decay endpoint. This paper details the implementation and optimization methods for successful operation of the filter for electrons with a known pitch angle. We present the first demonstrator that produces the required magnetic field properties with an iron return-flux magnet. Two methods for the setting of filter electrode voltages are detailed. The challenges of low-energy electron transport in cases of low field are discussed, such as the growth of the cyclotron radius with decreasing magnetic field, which puts a ceiling on filter performance relative to fixed filter dimensions. Additionally, low pitch angle trajectories are dominated by motion parallel to the magnetic field lines and introduce non-adiabatic conditions and curvature drift. To minimize these effects and maximize electron acceptance into the filter, we present a three-potential-well design to simultaneously drain the parallel and transverse kinetic energies throughout the length of the filter. These optimizations are shown, in simulation, to achieve low-energy electron transport from a 1 T iron core (or 3 T superconducting) starting field with initial kinetic energy of 18.6 keV drained to < 10 eV (< 1 eV) in about 80 cm. This result for low field operation paves the way for the first demonstrator of the PTOLEMY spectrometer for measurement of electrons near the tritium endpoint to be constructed at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy.

The goal of the HIBEAM/NNBAR program is to search for baryon number violation via the conversion or oscillation of neutrons into sterile neutrons and/or antineutrons at the European Spallation Source. A key experimental component of the program is the construction of an annihilation detector to directly observe the production of an antineutron following the oscillation. Design studies for the annihilation detector are presented. The predicted response of the detector models are studied using Geant4 simulations made with Monte Carlo simulations of the annihilation signal topology and cosmic ray backgrounds. Particle identification and sensitive discriminating observables, such as invariant mass and sphericity, are shown.

A new generation magnetic spectrometer in space will open the opportunity to inves-tigate the frontiers in direct high-energy cosmic ray measurements and to precisely measure the amount of the rare antimatter component in cosmic rays beyond the reach of current missions. We propose the concept for an Antimatter Large Acceptance Detector In Orbit (ALADInO), designed to take over the legacy of direct measurements of cosmic rays in space performed by PAMELA and AMS-02. ALADInO features technological solutions conceived to overcome the current limi-tations of magnetic spectrometers in space with a layout that provides an acceptance larger than 10 m2 sr. A superconducting magnet coupled to precision tracking and time-of-flight systems can provide the required matter–antimatter separation capabilities and rigidity measurement resolution with a Maximum Detectable Rigidity better than 20 TV. The inner 3D-imaging deep calorimeter, designed to maximize the isotropic acceptance of particles, allows for the measurement of cosmic rays up to PeV energies with accurate energy resolution to precisely measure features in the cosmic ray spectra. The operations of ALADInO in the Sun–Earth L2 Lagrangian point for at least 5 years would enable unique revolutionary observations with groundbreaking discovery poten-tials in the field of astroparticle physics by precision measurements of electrons, positrons, and antiprotons up to 10 TeV and of nuclear cosmic rays up to PeV energies, and by the possible unam-biguous detection and measurement of low-energy antideuteron and antihelium components in cosmic rays., QC 20230227

We measured the surface tension of linear alkylbenzene (LAB) HYBLENE 113 mixed with Diphenyloxazole (PPO) as well as of pure LAB HYBLENE 113 as part of material studies for the liquid-scintillator based surround background tagger (SBT) in the proposed SHiP experiment. The measurement was performed using the iron wire method and the surface tension for linear alkyl benzene HYBLENE 113 plus PPO was found to be (30.0 ± 0.6) mN/m 22.0 ± 0.5°C and for pure HYBLENE 113, (29.2 ± 0.6) mN/m at 21.0 ± 0.5°C., Peer Reviewed

Starburst galaxies (SBGs) and more in general star-forming galaxies represent a class of galaxies with a high star formation rate (up to 100M(circle dot)/year). Despite their low luminosity, they can be considered as guaranteed "factories" of high energy neutrinos, being "reservoirs" of accelerated cosmic rays and hosting a high density target gas in the central region. In this contribution we present a novel multimessenger study of these sources and the possibility of observing their neutrino signals with the KM3NeT/ARCA telescope. The differential sensitivity for different SBG scenarios is reported considering track-like neutrino events in the 100 GeV-100 PeV energy range.

KM3NeT/ORCA is a water-Cherenkov neutrino detector, currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2450 meters. The project’s main goal is the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy by measuring the energy- and zenith-angle-resolved oscillation probabilities of atmospheric neutrinos traversing the Earth. Additionally, the detector observes a large amount of atmospheric muons, which can be used to study extensive air showers generated by cosmic ray particles. This work describes a deep-learning based reconstruction of atmospheric muons using graph convolutional networks. They are used to reconstruct the zenith angle, the muon multiplicity and the diameter of atmospheric muon bundles. Simulations and measured data from an early four line stage of the detector are used to evaluate the performance. KM3NeT/ORCA is a dense array that constitutes the low-energy branch of the KM3NeT project with the main goal of resolving the question of the neutrino mass ordering. At present, the KM3NeT/ORCA Phase 1 has already been deployed, which means that six out of the planned 115 detection lines are operational. Even with this limited configuration, neutrino oscillations can already be measured and studied. In this contribution, the sensitivity to the neutrino Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) parameter eµt using the current stage of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector together with the projections for the final configuration are presented., Postprint (published version)

The discovery of a high-energy cosmic neutrino flux has paved the way for the field of neutrino astronomy. For a large part of the flux, the sources remain unidentified. The KM3NeT detector, which is under construction in the Mediterranean sea, is designed to determine their origin. KM3NeT will instrument a cubic kilometre of seawater with photomultiplier tubes that detect Cherenkov radiation from neutrino interaction products with nanosecond precision. For single cascade event signatures, KM3NeT already showed that it can reach degree-level resolutions, greatly increasing the use of these neutrinos for astronomy. In this contribution, we further refine the cascade reconstruction by making a more detailed model of the neutrinos events and including additional information on the hit times. The arrival time of light can be used to improve the identification of double cascade signatures from tau neutrinos, and the angular resolution of both single and double cascade signatures. KM3NeT is a multi-purpose cubic-kilometer neutrino observatory in construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of ORCA and ARCA (for Oscillation and Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss, respectively); currently both have a few detection lines in operation. Although having different primary goals, both detectors can be used to do neutrino astronomy over a wide energy range, from a few GeV to a few tens of PeV. In view of the growing field of time-domain astronomy, it is increasingly crucial to be able to identify neutrinos in real-time. This online neutrino sample will serve to trigger neutrino alerts that will be sent to the astronomy community and to look for time/space coincidence around external electromagnetic and multi-messenger triggers. These real-time searches can significantly increase the discovery potential of transient cosmic accelerators and refine the pointing directions in the case of poorly localized triggers, such as gravitational waves. In the field of core-collapse supernovae (CCSN), the detection of the MeVscale CCSN neutrinos is crucial as an early warning. KM3NeT’s digital optical modules act as good detectors for these neutrinos. The KM3NeT collaboration is constructing two large neutrino detectors in the Mediterranean Sea: KM3NeT/ARCA, located near Sicily and aiming at neutrino astronomy, and KM3NeT/ORCA, located near Toulon and designed for neutrino oscillation studies. The two detectors, together, will have hundreds of Detection Units (DUs) with 18 Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) maintained vertical by buoyancy, forming a large 3D optical array for detecting the Cherenkov light produced by particle produced in neutrino interactions. To properly reconstruct the direction of the incoming neutrino, the position of the DOMs must be known precisely with an accuracy of less than 10 cm, and since the DUs are affected by sea current the position will be measured every 10 minutes. For this purpose, there are acoustic and orientation sensors inside the DOMs. An Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) chip provides the components values of the Acceleration and Magnetic field in the DOM, from which it is possible to calculate Yaw, Pitch, and Roll for each floor of the line. A piezo sensor detects the signals from fixed acoustic emitters on the sea floor, so to position it by trilateration. Data from these sensors are used as an input to reconstruct the shape of the entire line based on a DU Line Fit mechanical model. With the objective of understanding the energetic-particle loss mechanism in three-dimensional plasmas, a Faraday-cup-based fast-ion loss detector (FILD) was developed and installed in OP1.2b in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) as a collaboration between the National Institute for Fusion Science and Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics. The FILD, which consists of double apertures and thin aluminum foils, was based on a magnetic spectrometer using the magnetic field of the fusion device. The double aperture limits the thermal ion, but allows the energetic ion to enter the FILD box. The thin aluminum foils serve as the ion collector. Orbit-following calculations were performed in order to find a suitable position for the FILD. The results indicated that barely co- and counter-going transit ions reached the FILD position mounted on the multi-purpose manipulator installed on W7-X. Moreover, because the injection angle of neutral beams injector installed on W7-X was relatively perpendicular, the target range of pitch angle was set to from 91 degrees to 150 degrees. An energy-and-pitch-angle map was created using a grid calculation code in order to decide on the position/size of aperture and aluminum foil. The grid calculation code indicates the position where the energetic ion would strike on the aluminum foil. Here, the map was used as the basis for designing an aluminum foil pattern with two energies and four pitch angle ranges. Also, note that the lower energy range was designed so that it accommodates a neutral beam injection energy of 55 kV. Measurements of beam ion losses were performed in neutral beam (NB) blip experiments, where concurrent increases and decreases of barely co-going transit beam ion losses due to NB injections were observed. New silicon 3-D-microdetectors have been developed to perform microdosimetry measurements for applications in hadron therapy. In this work, the charge collection efficiency (CCE) of an improved second generation of microdetectors having two different thicknesses (10 and 20 \mu \text{m} ) and a diameter of 25 \mu \text{m} has been studied by means of the ion beam induced charge (IBIC) technique. New methods to study the active volume and the CCE of microdosimeters are proposed and verified here. The results show that, for this new generation of microdetectors, the CCE is 100% for radial distances up to 10.2 \mu \text{m} from the center of the device, and it rapidly decays between 10.2 \mu \text{m} and the detector edge. The characterization of the CCE conducted here will allow us to completely explain the energy spectra obtained during the microdosimetry studies performed in clinical centers.

While the KM3NeT neutrino detector is being deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, the Collaboration launched a contest searching for illustrations of the neutrinos it will detect. The participants in the contest were invited to submit their interpretation of a neutrino, using any technique. More than 500 drawings were submitted from sixteen different countries. The winners were selected by a jury of scientists, artists and science communicators based on the originality and creativity of the drawings, as well as the harmony with the properties and origin of the neutrinos. After announcing the results in an online ceremony with a large international audience, the winning drawings have been put on display in a dedicated KM3NeT Virtual Neutrino Art Centre. In this contribution, we will explain the motivation for the contest and will describe how it was organized. The KM3NeT Collaboration is constructing two deep-sea Cherenkov detectors in the Mediterranean Sea, aiming at neutrino oscillation measurements with the ORCA array, while the ARCA array aims at neutrino astronomy in the TeV range. In April 2021, 5 additional detection units were deployed in the ARCA site. The KM3NeT/ARCA instrumented volume is currently similar to the one of the ANTARES neutrino telescope. In this contribution, an analysis of the data obtained with the detector before April 2021 is presented as well as the analysis of the very first data from the new KM3NeT/ARCA configuration. Large research infrastructures have opened new observational windows, allowing us to study the structure of matter up to the entire Universe. However, society hardly observes these developments through education and outreach activities. This induces a gap between frontier science and society that may create misconceptions about the content, context, and mission of public funded science. In this context, the main goal of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 "Science with and for Society" REINFORCE project (REsearch INfrastructure FOR Citizens in Europe) is to minimize the knowledge gap between large research infrastructures and society through Citizen Science. A series of activities is being developed on the Zooniverse platform, in four main fields of frontier physics involving large research infrastructures: gravitational waves with the VIRGO interferometer, particle physics with the ATLAS detector at LHC, neutrinos with the KM3NeT telescope, and cosmic rays at the interface of geoscience and archeology. Using real and simulated data, Citizen Scientists will help building a better understanding of the impact of the environment on these very high precision detectors as well as creating new knowledge. The KM3NeT Collaboration has successfully deployed the first detection units of the next generation undersea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea at the two sites in Italy and in France. The data sample collected between December 2016 and January 2020 has been used to measure the atmospheric muon rate at two different depths under the sea level: 3.5 km with KM3NeTARCA and 2.5 km with KM3NeT-ORCA. Atmospheric muons represent an abundant signal in a neutrino telescope and can be used to test the reliability of the Monte Carlo simulation chain and to study the physics of extensive air showers caused by highly-energetic primary nuclei impinging the Earth’s atmosphere. At energies above PeV the contribution from prompt muons, created right after the first interaction in the shower, is expected to become dominant, however its existence has not yet been experimentally confirmed. In this talk, data collected with the first detection units of KM3NeT are compared to Monte Carlo simulations based on MUPAGE and CORSIKA codes. The main features of the simulation and reconstruction chains are presented. Neutrinos have been proved to be unique messengers in the understanding of fundamental physics processes, and in astrophysical data sets they may provide hints of physics beyond the Standard Model. For example, neutrinos could be the key to discerning between various dark matter models that are based on Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). WIMPs can scatter off standard matter nuclei in the vicinity of massive bodies such as the Sun or the Earth, lose velocity, and be gravitationally trapped in the center of the body. Self-annihilation of dark matter into Standard Model particles may produce an observable flux of neutrinos. For the case of the Earth, an excess of neutrinos coming from the center of the planet could indicate WIMP capture and annihilation at the Earth's core. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, located at the geographical South Pole, is sensitive to these excess neutrinos. A search has been conducted on 8 years of IceCube data, probing multiple dark matter channels and masses. The Microhexcavity Panel ( muHex) is a novel gaseous micropattern particle detector comprised of a dense array of close-packed hexagonal pixels, each operating as an independent detection unit for ionizing radiation. It is a second generation detector derived from plasma panel detectors and microcavity detectors. The muHex is under development to be deployed as a scalable, fast timing (ns) and hermetically sealed gaseous tracking detector with high rate ( > 100 KHz/cm^2 ) capability. The devices reported here were fabricated as 16 x 16 pixel arrays of 2 mm edge-to-edge, 1 mm deep hexagonal cells embedded in a thin, 1.4 mm glass-ceramic wafer. Cell walls are metalized cathodes, connected to high voltage bus lines through conductive vias. Anodes are small, 457 micron diameter metal discs screen printed on the upper substrate. The detectors are filled with an operating gas to near 1 atm and then closed with a shut-off valve. They have been operated in both avalanche mode and gas discharge devices, producing mV to volt level signals with about 1 to 3 ns rise times. Operation in discharge mode is enabled by high impedance quench resistors on the high voltage bus at each pixel site. Results indicate that each individual pixel behaves as an isolated detection unit with high single pixel intrinsic efficiency to both beta's from radioactive sources and to cosmic ray muons. Continuous avalanche mode operation over several days at hit rates over 300 KHz/cm^2 with no gas flow have been observed. Measurements of pixel isolation, timing response, efficiency, hit rate and rate stability are reported.

In order to develop new techniques for the knowledge of the universe some experiments in elementary particles and high energy physics are proposed, where progress on detector and data acquisition techniques is fundamental. This project presents some improvements for the LHCb upgrade that will be performed in the period between 2018 and 2019 during the Long Shutdown 2 of the CERN experiments in order to configure, improve and re-structure the data acquisition practices. It will emphasize the Scintillating Fibers detector (SciFi), one of LHCb's future sub-detectors in charge of the trace pattern recognition based on the hits occurred on this sub-detector and the recording of significant events in the data transmission.Due to the proposed changes of the LHCb upgrade, regarding the increase of the luminosity and the collision center-of-mass energy, it is essential to reconsider the digital processes in the data acquisition and their respective processing among the transmission channels, due to the high velocities at which they occur. Therefore, the operation mode configurations in the acquisition digital boards were the aim of this work. And as such, the current condition of the detector and its acquisition techniques and protocols are documented corresponding to their modification.This paper shows a step-by-step presentation of the modifications applied to the codes to move from a Standard Mode to a Wide Bus Mode, increasing the data rate by means of the quantity reduction of the control bits to enlarge the amount of analyzable information among the events.

ALTO is a wide field-of-view air shower detector array for very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy, proposed to be installed in the Southern Hemisphere at an altitude of ∼5.1 km above sea level. The array will use water Cherenkov detectors, as in the HAWC observatory, but combined with scintillator detectors, to detect air showers induced by VHE gamma rays in the atmosphere. It is being designed to attain a lower energy threshold, better energy and angular resolution, and improved sensitivity. The array will consist of ∼1250 small-sized (3.6 m diameter) detector units distributed over a circular area of ∼160 m in diameter. Each detector unit will consist of a water Cherenkov detector and a liquid scintillation detector underneath which will preferentially identify muons, facilitating the background (cosmic ray) rejection, thereby improving the sensitivity. The background rejection will be further enhanced by the close-packed arrangement and the small size of the detectors which will allow a fine sampling of air-shower footprints at the ground. In this contribution, we present the Monte-Carlo simulation of the experiment performed using CORSIKA and GEANT4 simulation packages. Such antennas are part of a radio station system used for detection of cosmic ray induced air showers at the Engineering Radio Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the so-called Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA). The directional and frequency characteristics of the broadband antenna are investigated using a remotely piloted aircraft carrying a small transmitting antenna. The antenna sensitivity is described by the vector effective length relating the measured voltage with the electric-field components perpendicular to the incoming signal direction. The horizontal and meridional components are determined with an overall uncertainty of 7.4(-0.3)(+0.9)%and 10.3(-1.7)(+2.8)% respectively. The measurement is used to correct a simulated response of the frequency and directional response of the antenna. In addition, the influence of the ground conductivity and permittivity on the antenna response is simulated. Both have a negligible influence given the ground conditions measured at the detector site. The overall uncertainties of the vector effective length components result in an uncertainty of 8.8(-1.3)(+2.1)% in the square root of the energy fluence for incoming signal directions with zenith angles smaller than 60 degrees., Unión Europea. The sensitivity to the invisible decay of the mass eigenstate ν3 in the presence of Earth matter effects is studied. Only the charged current interactions of atmospheric νµ and νµ for 500 kTon year exposure of a future magnetised iron detector at INO are analysed. The analysis with observed muon energy in the range would give a constraint of τ3/m3 > 1.51×10−10 s/eV at 90% CL with this exposure. Here τ3 is the lifetime and m3 is the mass of ν3, when it is the heaviest. The effect of decay on the precision measurement of sin2 θ23 and |∆m232| and neutrino mass hierarchy are also studied. Since the presence of decay affects the oscillation amplitude rather than its phase, it is seen that the precision on sin2 θ23 worsens whereas that on |∆m232| is not much affected. Sensitivity to hierarchy also worsens slightly in the presence of the invisible decay of ν3, QC 20200219

The motivation for a cosmic muon veto (CMV) detector is to explore the possibility of locating the proposed large Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) detector at the India based Neutrino Observatory (INO) at a shallow depth. An initial effort in that direction, through the assembly and testing of a similar to 1 m x 1 m x 0.3 m plastic scintillator based detector, is described. The plan for making a CMV detector for a smaller prototype mini-ICAL is also outlined.

The goal of the works on which this talk is based is to relate a direct detection signal with neutrino limits from the Sun independently of the astrophysics. In order to achieve this we derive a halo-independent lower bound on the dark matter capture rate in the Sun from a direct detection signal, with which one can set upper limits on the branching ratios into different channels from the absence of a high-energy neutrino flux in neutrino observatories. We also extend this bound to the case of inelastic scattering, both endothermic and exothermic. From two inelastic signals we show how the dark matter mass, the mass difference of the states and the couplings to neutrons and protons can be obtained. Furthermore, one can also pin down the exothermic/endothermic nature of the scattering, and therefore a precise lower bound on the solar capture rate is predicted. AMIGA (Auger Muons and Infill for the Ground Array) is an upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory to extend its range of detection and to directly measure the muon content of the particle showers. It consists of an infill of surface water-Cherenkov detectors accompanied by buried scintillator detectors used for muon counting. The main objectives of the AMIGA engineering array, referred to as the Unitary Cell, are to identify and resolve all engineering issues as well as to understand the muon-number counting uncertainties related to the design of the detector. The mechanical design, fabrication and deployment processes of the muon counters of the Unitary Cell are described in this document. These muon counters modules comprise sealed PVC casings containing plastic scintillation bars, wavelength-shifter optical fibers, 64 pixel photomultiplier tubes, and acquisition electronics. The modules are buried approximately 2.25 m below ground level in order to minimize contamination from electromagnetic shower particles. The mechanical setup, which allows access to the electronics for maintenance, is also described in addition to tests of the modules' response and integrity. A prototype composed of four resistive plate chamber layers has been exposed to quasi-monoenergetic neutrons produced from a deuteron beam of varying energy (300 to 1500 AMeV) in experiment S406 at GSI, Darmstad, Germany. Each layer, with an active area of about 2000 × 500 mm2, is made of modules containing the active gaps, all in multigap construction. Each gap is defined by 0.3 mm nylon mono-filaments positioned between 2.85 mm thick float glass electrodes. The modules are operated in avalanche mode with a non-flammable gas mixture composed of 90% C2H2F4 and 10% SF6. The signals are readout by a pick-up electrode formed by 15 copper strips (per layer), spaced at a pitch of 30 mm, connected at both sides to timing front end electronics. Measurements of the time of flight jitter of neutrons, in the mentioned energy range, point to a contribution of the resistive plate chamber in the order of 150 ps, independent of the neutron energy.

On the 15th of June 2006, the PAMELA (Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics) satellite-borne experiment was launched onboard the Russian Resurs-DK1 satellite by a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur space centre. The satellite was placed in a quasi-polar 70 degrees inclination orbit at an altitude varying between 350 km and 600 km. New results on the antiparticle component of the cosmic radiation were obtained. The positron energy spectrum and positron fraction were measured from 400 MeV up to 200 GeV revealing a positron excess over the predictions of commonly used propagation models. This can be interpreted either as evidence that the propagation models should be revised or in terms of dark matter annihilation or a pulsar contribution. The antiproton spectrum was measured over the energy range from 60 MeV to 350 GeV. The antiproton spectrum is consistent with secondary production and significantly constrains dark matter models. The energy spectra of protons and helium nuclei were measured up to 1.2 TV. The spectral shapes of these two species are different and cannot be described well by a single power law. For the First time the electron spectrum was measured up to 600 GeV complementing the information obtained from the positron data. Nuclear and isotopic composition was obtained with unprecedented precision. The variation of the low energy proton, electron and positron energy spectra was measured from July 2006 until December 2009 accurately sampling the unusual conditions of the most recent solar minimum activity period (2006-2009). Low energy particle spectra were accurately measured also for various solar events that occurred during the PAMELA mission. The Earth's magnetosphere was studied measuring the particle radiation in different regions of the magnetosphere. Energy spectra and composition of sub-cutoff and trapped particles were obtained. PAMELA has been orbiting the Earth for more than six years, gathering data on solar, galactic and trapped cosmic rays during the time of the last solar minimum. The apparatus comprises a time-of-flight system, a silicon-microstrip magnetic spectrometer, a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter, an anticoincidence system, a shower tail catcher scintillator and a neutron detector. The combination of these devices allows charged particle and antiparticle identification over a wide energy range and with an unprecedented precision. The quasi-polar orbit of the instrument, with an inclination of 70 degrees, makes it possible to measure low energy particles starting from about 100 MeV/n. Detection of ?- and ?-particles is of paramount importance in a wide range of applications. Current particle detectors are all macroscopic and have limited time resolution. We demonstrate a nanoscale particle detector with a small detection volume, high detection efficiency, short dead times and low dark count levels. We measure ?- and ?-particle detection efficiencies close to unity using different sources and also demonstrate blindness towards ?-rays. The PAMELA experiment is being conducted on board the RESURS DK1 satellite, launched into a near-Earth, near-polar orbit with an altitude of 350-610 km and an inclination of 70° on June 15, 2006. The apparatus comprises a magnetic spectrometer, an electromagnetic calorimeter (16X 0), a time-of-flight system, a neutron detector, an anticoincidence system, and a shower tail scintillator. It allows measurements of electron and positron fluxes in cosmic rays over a wide energy range of ∼100 MeV to several hundreds of GeVs. Influence of Sun and other cosmic factors on the environment of the Earth is a new concept in Sun-Earth connection studies. Space weather phenomena affecting environment of the Earth including aircraft and spacecraft communication will be studied. During the coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun the impact on the Calactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) will be observed. The particle detector is vital for measuring the modulation effects the Sun poses on the ambient population of the Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR). The known agents of these modulation effects are Solar Flares (SF), Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) and Interplanetary CMEs (ISME)., This grant to JNU was initiated to setup SEVAN station in Indian location with help from Armenian Professor Ashot Chillingarian, Yerevan Physics Institute (YerPhI), Alikhanyan Brothers 2, Yerevan 0036, Armenia. Scientific data could not be reported at the time of concluding this project due to schedule slippage in the delivery and installation of the detector at JNU. PI plans to continue the project at his cost.

The double kinetic energy measurement of fission fragments with a double-sided Frisch grid ionization chamber allows a careful determination of the emission angle, which is essential in order to apply appropriate energy-loss corrections. We present a drift-time method, which uses the time that free electrons need to drift from the location of their creation, e.g. by a fission fragment in the counting gas, to the grid, before inducing a signal on the anode. Such a measurement leaves energy and angular information fully decoupled. We demonstrate the applicability of the drift-time method for the example of the 234,238U (γ,f) reactions performed at the superconducting Darmstadt electron linear accelerator. The angular resolutions achieved with this method are comparable to those obtained with other methods. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) in conjunction with online size exclusion chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SEC/ESI-MS) has successfully been applied for the determination of accurate propagation rate coefficients, kp, in free radical polymerization. SEC/ESI-MS is used in this context to precisely determine the molecular weight distribution of the polymer produced by the PLP-experiment. The novel approach allows for a highly accurate internal calibration of the size exclusion system to be obtained from first principles, as the molecular weight of the polymer is determined with ppm accuracy by the mass spectrometer and allows corrections for SEC band broadening effects to be made. Molecular weight measurements can furthermore be performed regardless of the monomer class, as long as the macromolecule is amenable to electrospray ionization. The proposed approach successfully eliminates work-steps and problems incurred in the analysis of new and poorly characterized monomers, where universal calibration or multi-detector SEC had to be applied until now and provides an alternative also to PLP/MALDI-MS. Applicability of the method is demonstrated tor the homologous series of methyl-, ethyl- and butyl methacrylate. The experimentally determined kp values were 5-10% higher than the currently available benchmark data. The experimental k p is in agreement with the results of kinetic simulations, assuming a short chain length dependency of kp, in accordance with the empirical model of Smith, Heuts and Russell. Size exclusion chromatography coupled online to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SEC/ESI-MS) is employed to establish universal calibration (UC) relationships for a number of linear poly(alkyl acrylates) and poly(alkyl methacrylates) (pMMAs) as well as poly(vinyl acetate) synthesized via radical chain transfer polymerization. It is demonstrated that in the analyzed molecular weight range, Mark-Houwink-Kuhn-Sakurada (MHKS) coefficients can be successfully determined in relation to values of pMMA. The agreement between the UC model using mass spectrometry-derived MHKS coefficients and the measured data was generally better than 10%. The MHKS values reported herein are expected to remain valid up to 20 kDa. A comparison with the outcome of UC using literature reported MHKS coefficients determined by intrinsic viscosity-molecular weight (IV-MW) measurements is provided. Errors of more than 30% can result when these literature values are employed in the low molecular weight range (M̄n < 20 kDa). Use of MHKS coefficients derived from IV-MW measurements in UC is, therefore, strongly discouraged at molecular weights below 20 kDa. © 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The degradation of low-MW (Mn = 500 g . mol-1) model compounds of pBA and pHEMA were studied under conditions corresponding to the worst-case temperatures and irradiation intensities likely to be experienced by a surface coating exposed to the harsh Australian environment. Vinyl-terminated polymers were compared to their saturated analogues; the terminal vinyl bond was found to be a source of instability which rendered the polymers more susceptible to degradation. The cyclic degradation mechanism derived from degradation of pMMA in our previous publication is also relevant to pBA and pHEMA. In addition, pBA and pHEMA are susceptible to other degradation and crosslinking reactions; crosslinking is particularly rapid in pHEMA exposed to UV radiation. © 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
