The fourth-DR3 version (4FGL-DR3) of the Fermi/LAT catalogue of $\gamma$-ray sources contains $\sim$ 1000 objects at a galactic latitude |b| > 10$^{\circ}$ which are not identified with an optical counterpart (UGS). We performed a systematic study of these sources, focusing on 190 objects that have a unique X-ray counterpart in the available Swift/XRT observations. Optical counterparts are then selected, and for 33 sources optical spectra were found in the literature. We found that 21 can be classified as BL Lac objects. Among these we were able to provide the redshift for 8 of them while for 2 others we established a lower limit to the redshift by detecting intervening absorption. The other 12 objects display optical spectra with prominent emission lines (0.036

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a class of accreting compact objects with X-ray luminosities above 1039 erg s-1. The average number of ULXs per galaxy is still not well-constrained, especially given the uncertainty on the fraction of ULX transients. Here, we report the identification of a new transient ULX in the galaxy NGC 55 (which we label as ULX-2), thanks to recent XMM-Newton and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory observations. This object was previously classified as a transient X-ray source with a luminosity around a few 1038 erg s-1 in a 2010 XMM-Newton observation. Thanks to new and deeper observations (∼130 ks each), we show that the source reaches a luminosity peak >1.6 × 1039 erg s-1. The X-ray spectrum of ULX-2 is much softer than in previous observations and fits in the class of soft ULXs. It can be well-described using a model with two thermal components, as often found in ULXs. The time-scales of the X-ray variability are of the order of a month and are likely driven by small changes in the accretion rate or due to super-orbital modulations, attributed to precession of the accretion disc, which is similar to other ULXs.

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. In this paper, we present and compare four methods to enforce Dirichlet boundary conditions in Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) and Variational Physics-Informed Neural Networks (VPINNs). Such conditions are usually imposed by adding penalization terms in the loss function and properly choosing the corresponding scaling coefficients; however, in practice, this requires an expensive tuning phase. We show through several numerical tests that modifying the output of the neural network to exactly match the prescribed values leads to more efficient and accurate solvers. The best results are achieved by exactly enforcing the Dirichlet boundary conditions by means of an approximate distance function. We also show that variationally imposing the Dirichlet boundary conditions via Nitsches method leads to suboptimal solvers.

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. X-ray photons from energetic sources such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be scattered on dust clouds in the Milky Way, creating a time-evolving halo around the GRB position. X-ray observations of such halos allow the measurement of dust clouds distances in the Galaxy on which the scattering occurs. We present the first systematic comparison of the distances to scattering regions derived from GRB halos with the 3D dust distribution derived from recently published optical-to-near infrared extinction maps. GRB halos were observed around 7 sources by the Swift XRT and the XMM-Newton EPIC instruments, namely GRB 031203, GRB 050713A, GRB 050724, GRB 061019, GRB 070129, GRB 160623A and GRB 221009A. We used four 3D extinction maps that exploit photometric data from different surveys and apply diverse algorithms for the 3D mapping of extinction, and compared the X-ray halo-derived distances with the local maxima in the 3D extinction density distribution. We found that in all GRBs we can find at least one local maximum in the 3D dust extinction map that is in agreement with the dust distance measured from X-ray rings. For GRBs with multiple X-ray rings, the dust distance measurements coincide with at least 3 maxima in the extinction map for GRB 160623A, and 5 maxima for GRB 221009A. The agreement of these independent distance measurements shows that the methods used to create dust extinction maps may potentially be optimized by the X-ray halo observations from GRBs., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Since its start in 2014, the lightweight open source Python library Gammapy has come a long way to become a popular data analysis package for high-energy astrophysics. Selected as the official CTAO Science Analysis tool, it is also an approved analysis software within the H.E.S.S. and MAGIC collaborations. The first long-term version, Gammapy v1.0 was released on late 2022. It is compliant with several well-established data conventions in high-energy astrophysics, and provides serialised data products that are interoperable with other software. Event lists and instrument response functions curated within the same format from various instruments can be reduced to data binned in energy, time or spatial coordinates. Thereafter, the flux and morphology of one or more gamma-ray sources can be estimated using Poisson maximum likelihood fitting and assuming a variety of spectral, temporal and spatial models. Flux points, likelihood profiles and light curves extractions are supported. Complex user defined likelihoods and models can also be implemented. In this contribution, we will highlight the main features of Gammapy v1.0, including data reduction and analysis examples from different space and ground-based instruments, applications of various background rejection techniques, and a simultaneous fitting across multiple instruments with astrophysical models. We will also present our plans for the future, showcasing new features such as the support of different event types, unbinned likelihood analysis, spectral unfolding and transient source detections. In this article, we present Gammapy, an open-source Python package for the analysis of astronomical $\gamma$-ray data, and illustrate the functionalities of its first long-term-support release, version 1.0. Built on the modern Python scientific ecosystem, Gammapy provides a uniform platform for reducing and modeling data from different $\gamma$-ray instruments for many analysis scenarios. Gammapy complies with several well-established data conventions in high-energy astrophysics, providing serialized data products that are interoperable with other software packages. Starting from event lists and instrument response functions, Gammapy provides functionalities to reduce these data by binning them in energy and sky coordinates. Several techniques for background estimation are implemented in the package to handle the residual hadronic background affecting $\gamma$-ray instruments. After the data are binned, the flux and morphology of one or more $\gamma$-ray sources can be estimated using Poisson maximum likelihood fitting and assuming a variety of spectral, temporal, and spatial models. Estimation of flux points, likelihood profiles, and light curves is also supported. After describing the structure of the package, we show, using publicly available $\gamma$-ray data, the capabilities of Gammapy in multiple traditional and novel $\gamma$-ray analysis scenarios, such as spectral and spectro-morphological modeling and estimations of a spectral energy distribution and a light curve. Its flexibility and power are displayed in a final multi-instrument example, where datasets from different instruments, at different stages of data reduction, are simultaneously fitted with an astrophysical flux model., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures

The accretion flow / jet correlation in neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is far less understood when compared to black hole (BH) LMXBs. In this paper we will present the results of a dense multi-wavelength observational campaign on the NS LMXB 4U 1820-30, including X-ray (Nicer, NuSTAR and AstroSAT) and quasi-simultaneous radio (ATCA) observations in 2022. 4U 1820-30 shows a peculiar 170 day super-orbital accretion modulation, during which the system evolves between "modes" of high and low X-ray flux. During our monitoring, the source did not show any transition to a full hard state. X-ray spectra were well described using a disc blackbody, a Comptonisation spectrum along with a Fe K emission line at 6.6 keV. Our results show that the observed X-ray flux modulation is almost entirely produced by changes in the size of the region providing seed photons for the Comptonisation spectrum. This region is large (about 15 km) in the high mode and likely coincides with the whole boundary layer, while it shrinks significantly (<10 km) in low mode. The electron temperature of the corona and the observed RMS variability in the hard X-rays also exhibit a slight increase in low mode. As the source moves from high to low mode, the radio emission due to the jet becomes about 5 fainter. These radio changes appear not to be strongly connected to the hard-to-soft transitions as in BH systems, while they seem to be connected mostly to variations observed in the boundary layer., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. The transient X-ray source MAXI J1810-222 was discovered in 2018 and has been active ever since. A long combined radio and X-ray monitoring campaign was performed with ATCA and Swift respectively. It has been proposed that MAXI J1810-222 is a relatively distant black hole X-ray binary, albeit showing a very peculiar outburst behaviour. Here, we report on the spectral study of this source making use of a large sample of NICER observations performed between 2019 February and 2020 September. We detected a strong spectral absorption feature at $\sim$1 keV, which we have characterised with a physical photoionisation model. Via a deep scan of the parameters space, we obtained evidence for a spectral-state dependent outflow, with mildly relativistic speeds. In particular, the soft and intermediate states point to a hot plasma outflowing at 0.05-0.15 $c$. This speeds rule-out thermal winds and, hence, they suggest that such outflows could be radiation pressure or (most likely) magnetically-driven winds. GRB 221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever detected and occurred at low Galactic latitude. Owing to this exceptional combination, its prompt X-ray emission could be detected for weeks in the form of expanding X-ray rings produced by scattering in Galactic dust clouds. We report on the analysis of 20 rings, generated by dust at distances ranging from 0.3 to 18.6 kpc, detected during two XMM-Newton observations performed about 2 and 5 days after the GRB. By fitting the spectra of the rings with different models for the dust composition and grain size distribution, we reconstructed the spectrum of the GRB prompt emission in the 0.7-4 keV energy range as an absorbed power law with photon index 1-1.4 and absorption in the host galaxy nHz=(4.1-5.3)E21 cm-2. Taking into account the systematic uncertainties on the column density of dust contained in the clouds producing the rings, the 0.5-5 keV fluence of GRB 221009A can be constrained between 1E-3 and 7E-3 erg cm-2., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJL

In this paper we introduce a multistep generalization of the guess-and-determine or hybrid strategy for solving a system of multivariate polynomial equations over a finite field. In particular, we propose performing the exhaustive evaluation of a subset of variables stepwise, that is, by incrementing the size of such subset each time that an evaluation leads to a polynomial system which is possibly unfeasible to solve. The decision about which evaluation to extend is based on a preprocessing consisting in computing an incomplete Grobner basis after the current evaluation, which possibly generates linear polynomials that are used to eliminate further variables. If the number of remaining variables in the system is deemed still too high, the evaluation is extended and the preprocessing is iterated. Otherwise, we solve the system by a complete Grobner basis computation. Having in mind cryptanalytic applications, we present an implementation of this strategy in an algorithm called MultiSolve which is designed for polynomial systems having at most one solution. We prove explicit formulas for its complexity which are based on probability distributions that can be easily estimated by performing the proposed preprocessing on a testset of evaluations for different subsets of variables. We prove that an optimal complexity of MultiSolve is achieved by using a full multistep strategy with a maximum number of steps and in turn the standard guess-and-determine strategy, which essentially is a strategy consisting of a single step, is the worst choice. Finally, we extensively study the behaviour of MultiSolve when performing an algebraic attack on the well-known stream cipher Trivium., Comment: 29 pages. Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) represent an extreme class of accreting compact objects: from the identification of some of the accretors as neutron stars to the detection of powerful winds travelling at 0.1-0.2 c, the increasing evidence points towards ULXs harbouring stellar-mass compact objects undergoing highly super-Eddington accretion. Measuring their intrinsic properties, such as the accretion rate onto the compact object, the outflow rate, the masses of accretor/companion -- hence their progenitors, lifetimes, and future evolution -- is challenging due to ULXs being mostly extragalactic and in crowded fields. Yet ULXs represent our best opportunity to understand super-Eddington accretion physics and the paths through binary evolution to eventual double compact object binaries and gravitational wave sources. Through a combination of end-to-end and single-source simulations, we investigate the ability of HEX-P to study ULXs in the context of their host galaxies and compare it to XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, the current instruments with the most similar capabilities. HEX-P's higher sensitivity, which is driven by its narrow point-spread function and low background, allows it to detect pulsations and broad spectral features from ULXs better than XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. We describe the value of HEX-P in understanding ULXs and their associated key physics, through a combination of broadband sensitivity, timing resolution, and angular resolution, which make the mission ideal for pulsation detection and low-background, broadband spectral studies., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures. We introduce the Neural Approximated Virtual Element Method, a novel polygonal method that relies on neural networks to eliminate the need for projection and stabilization operators in the Virtual Element Method. In this paper, we discuss its formulation and detail the strategy for training the underlying neural network. The efficacy of this new method is tested through numerical experiments on elliptic problems.

Ultraluminous X-ray sources are considered amongst the most extremely accreting objects in the local Universe. The recent discoveries of pulsating neutron stars in ULXs strengthened the scenario of highly super-Eddington accretion mechanisms on stellar mass compact objects. In this work, we present the first long-term light curve of the source NGC 4559 X7 using all the available Swift/XRT, XMM-Newton, Chandra and NuSTAR data. Thanks to the high quality 2019 XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations, we investigated in an unprecedented way the spectral and temporal properties of NGC 4559 X7. The source displayed flux variations of up to an order of magnitude and an unusual flaring activity. We modelled the spectra from NGC 4559 X7 with a combination of two thermal components, testing also the addition of a further high energy cut-off powerlaw. We observed a spectral hardening associated with a luminosity increase during the flares, and a spectral softening in the epochs far from the flares. Narrow absorption and emission lines were also found in the RGS spectra, suggesting the presence of an outflow. Furthermore, we measured hard and (weak) soft lags with magnitudes of a few hundreds of seconds whose origin is possibly due to the accretion flow. We interpret the source properties in terms of a super-Eddington accretion scenario assuming the compact object is either a light stellar mass black hole or a neutron star.

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are extragalactic X-ray emitters located off-centre of their host galaxy and with a luminosity in excess of a few 1039 erg s−1, if emitted isotropically1,2. The discovery of periodic modulation revealed that in some ULXs the accreting compact object is a neutron star3–7, indicating luminosities substantially above their Eddington limit. The most extreme object in this respect is NGC 5907 ULX-1 (ULX1), with a peak luminosity that is 500 times its Eddington limit. During a Chandra observation to probe a low state of ULX1, we detected diffuse X-ray emission at the position of ULX1. Its diameter is 2.7 ± 1.0 arcsec and contains 25 photons, none below 0.8 keV. We interpret this extended structure as an expanding nebula powered by the wind of ULX1. Its diameter of about 200 pc, characteristic energy of ~1.9 keV and luminosity of ~2 × 1038 erg s−1 imply a mechanical power of 1.3 × 1041 erg s−1 and an age of ~7 × 104 yr. This interpretation suggests that a genuinely super-Eddington regime can be sustained for timescales much longer than the spin-up time of the neutron star powering the system. As the mechanical power from a single ULX nebula can rival the injection rate of cosmic rays of an entire galaxy8, ULX nebulae could be important cosmic ray accelerators9.

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a class of accreting compact objects with X-ray luminosities above 10^39 erg s-1. The ULX population counts several hundred objects but only a fraction are well studied. Here we present a detailed analysis of all ULXs hosted in the galaxy NGC 7456. It was observed in X-rays only once in the past (in 2005) by XMM-Newton. but the observation was short and strongly affected by high background. In 2018, we obtained a new, deeper (∼90 ks) XMM-Newton observation that allowed us to perform a detailed characterization of the ULXs hosted in the galaxy. ULX-1 and ULX-2, the two brightest objects (L X ∼ 6-10 10^39 erg s-1), have spectra that can be described by a model with two thermal components, as often found in ULXs. ULX-1 also shows one order of magnitude in flux variability on short-term timescales (hundreds to thousands of kiloseconds). The other sources (ULX-3 and ULX-4) show flux changes of at least an order of magnitude, and these objects may be candidate transient ULXs, although longer X-ray monitoring or further studies are required to ascribe them to the ULX population. In addition, we found a previously undetected source that might be a new candidate ULX (labeled as ULX-5), with a luminosity of ∼10^39 erg s-1 and hard power-law spectral shape, whose nature is still unclear and for which a background active galactic nucleus cannot be excluded. We discuss the properties of all the ULXs in NGC 7456 within the framework of super-Eddington accretion onto stellar-mass compact objects. Although no pulsations were detected, we cannot exclude that the sources host neutron stars.

ZTF J213056.71+442046.5 is the prototype of a small class of recently discovered compact binaries composed of a white dwarf and a hot subdwarf that fills its Roche-lobe. Its orbital period of only 39 min is the shortest known for the objects in this class. Evidence for a high orbital inclination (i=86 deg) and for the presence of an accretion disk has been inferred from a detailed modeling of its optical photometric and spectroscopic data. We report the results of an XMM-Newton observation carried out on 2021 January 7. ZTF J213056.71+442046.5 was clearly detected by the Optical Monitor, which showed a periodic variability in the UV band (200-400 nm), with a light curve similar to that seen at longer wavelengths. Despite accretion on the white dwarf at an estimated rate of the order of 10^{-9} M_sun/yr, no X-rays were detected with the EPIC instrument, with a limit of ~10^{30} erg/s on the 0.2-12 keV luminosity. Variability is a powerful tool to investigate properties of X-ray binaries (XRB), in particular for Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) that are mainly detected in the X-ray band. For most ULXs the nature of the accretor is unknown, although a few ULXs have been confirmed to be accreting at super-Eddington rates onto a neutron star (NS). Monitoring these sources is particularly useful both to detect transients and to derive periodicities, linked to orbital and super-orbital modulations. Here we present the results of our monitoring campaign of the galaxy NGC 925, performed with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. We also include archival and literature data obtained with Chandra, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. We have studied spectra, light-curves and variability properties on days to months time-scales. All the three ULXs detected in this galaxy show flux variability. ULX-1 is one of the most luminous ULXs known, since only 10% of the ULXs exceed a luminosity of $\sim$5$\times$10$^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, but despite its high flux variability we found only weak spectral variability. We classify it as in a hard ultraluminous regime of super-Eddington accretion. ULX-2 and ULX-3 are less luminous but also variable in flux and possibly also in spectral shape. We classify them as in between the hard and the soft ultraluminous regimes. ULX-3 is a transient source: by applying a Lomb-Scargle algorithm we derive a periodicity of $\sim$ 126 d, which could be associated with an orbital or super-orbital origin., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have studied the unusual time variability of an ultraluminous X-ray source in M 101, 4XMM J140314.2$+$541806 (henceforth, J1403), using Chandra and XMM-Newton data. Over the last two decades, J1403 has shown short-duration outbursts with an X-ray luminosity $\sim1-3 \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and longer intervals at luminosities $\sim0.5-1 \times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The bimodal behaviour and fast outburst evolution (sometimes only a few days) are more consistent with an accretor/propeller scenario for a neutron star than with the canonical outburst cycles of stellar-mass black holes. If this scenario is correct, the luminosities in the accretor and propeller states suggest a fast spin ($P \approx$ 5 ms) and a low surface magnetic field ($B \sim 10^{10}$ G), despite our identification of J1403 as a high-mass X-ray binary. The most striking property of J1403 is the presence of strong $\sim$600-s quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs), mostly around frequencies of $\approx 1.3-1.8$ mHz, found at several epochs during the ultraluminous regime. We illustrate the properties of such QPOs, in particular their frequency and amplitude changes between and within observations, with a variety of techniques (Fast Fourier Transforms, Lomb-Scargle periodograms, weighted wavelet Z-transform analysis). The QPO frequency range $<$10 mHz is an almost unexplored regime in X-ray binaries and ultraluminous X-ray sources. We compare our findings with the (few) examples of very low frequency variability found in other accreting sources, and discuss possible explanations (Lense-Thirring precession of the inner flow or outflow; radiation pressure limit-cycle instability; marginally stable He burning on the neutron star surface)., Comment: 23 pages, 29 figures, 5 tables. Variability is a powerful tool to investigate properties of X-ray binaries (XRB), in particular for Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) that are mainly detected in the X-ray band. For most ULXs the nature of the accretor is unknown, although a few ULXs have been confirmed to be accreting at super-Eddington rates on to a neutron star (NS). Monitoring these sources is particularly useful both to detect transients and to derive periodicities, linked to orbital and super-orbital modulations. Here, we present the results of our monitoring campaign of the galaxy NGC 925, performed with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. We also include archival and literature data obtained with Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR. We have studied spectra, light curves, and variability properties on days to months time-scales. All the three ULXs detected in this galaxy show flux variability. ULX-1 is one of the most luminous ULXs known, since only 10 per cent of the ULXs exceed a luminosity of ∼5 × 1040 erg s-1, but despite its high flux variability we found only weak spectral variability. We classify it as in a hard ultraluminous regime of super-Eddington accretion. ULX-2 and ULX-3 are less luminous but also variable in flux and possibly also in spectral shape. We classify them as in between the hard and the soft ultraluminous regimes. ULX-3 is a transient source: by applying a Lomb-Scargle algorithm, we derive a periodicity of ∼126 d, which could be associated with an orbital or superorbital origin.

The evolutionary history of archosaurs and their closest relatives is characterized by a wide diversity of locomotor modes, which has even been suggested as a pivotal aspect underlying the evolutionary success of dinosaurs vs. pseudosuchians across the Triassic-Jurassic transition. This locomotor diversity (e.g., more sprawling/erect; crouched/upright; quadrupedal/bipedal) led to several morphofunctional specializations of archosauriform limb bones that have been studied qualitatively as well as quantitatively through various linear morphometric studies. However, differences in locomotor habits have never been studied across the Triassic-Jurassic transition using 3D geometric morphometrics, which can relate how morphological features vary according to biological factors such as locomotor habit and body mass. Herein, we investigate morphological variation across a dataset of 72 femora from 36 different species of archosauriforms. First, we identify femoral head rotation, distal slope of the fourth trochanter, femoral curvature, and the angle between the lateral condyle and crista tibiofibularis as the main features varying between bipedal and quadrupedal taxa, all of these traits having a stronger locomotor signal than the lesser trochanter's proximal extent. We show a significant association between locomotor mode and phylogeny, but with the locomotor signal being stronger than the phylogenetic signal. This enables us to predict locomotor modes of some of the more ambiguous early archosauriforms without relying on the relationships between hindlimb and forelimb linear bone dimensions as in prior studies. Second, we highlight that the most important morphological variation is linked to the increase of body size, which impacts the width of the epiphyses and the roundness and proximodistal position of the fourth trochanter. BACKGROUND: Access to the liver transplant waitlist for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) depends on tumour presentation, biology, and response to treatments. The Milan Criteria (MC) represent the benchmark for expanded criteria that incorporate additional prognostic factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the added value of skeletal muscle index (SMI) in HCC patients beyond the MC. METHOD: Patients with HCC that were transplanted beyond the MC were included in this retrospective multicentre study. SMI was quantified using the Computed Tomography (CT) within 3 months prior to transplantation. Cox regression models were used to identify predictors of overall survival (OS). The discriminative performance of SMI extended Metroticket 2.0 and AFP models was also assessed. RESULTS: Out of 889 patients transplanted outside the MC, 528 had a CT scan within 3 months prior to liver transplantation (LT), of whom 176 (33%) were classified as sarcopenic. The median time between assessment of the SMI and LT was 1.8 months (IQR: 0.77-2.67). The median follow-up period was 5.1 95% CI [4.7-5.5] years, with a total of 177 recorded deaths from any cause. In a linear regression model with SMI as the dependent variable, only male gender (8.55 95% CI [6.51-10.59], P < 0.001) and body mass index (0.74 95% CI [0.59-0.89], P < 0.001) were significant. Univariable survival analysis of patients with sarcopenia versus patients without sarcopenia showed a significant difference in OS (HR 1.44 95% CI [1.07 - 1.94], P = 0.018). Also the SMI was significant (HR 0.98 95% CI [0.96-0.99], P = 0.014). The survival difference between the lowest SMI quartile versus the highest SMI quartile was significant (log-rank: P = 0.005) with 5 year OS of 57% and 71%, respectively. In this paper, we present and compare four methods to enforce Dirichlet boundary conditions in Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) and Variational Physics-Informed Neural Networks (VPINNs). Such conditions are usually imposed by adding penalization terms in the loss function and properly choosing the corresponding scaling coefficients; however, in practice, this requires an expensive tuning phase. We show through several numerical tests that modifying the output of the neural network to exactly match the prescribed values leads to more efficient and accurate solvers. The best results are achieved by exactly enforcing the Dirichlet boundary conditions by means of an approximate distance function. We also show that variationally imposing the Dirichlet boundary conditions via Nitsche's method leads to suboptimal solvers., Comment: 22 pages, 45 figures

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are the most extreme among X-ray binaries in which the compact object, a neutron star or a black hole, accretes matter from the companion star, and exceeds a luminosity of 1039 ergs−1 in the X-ray energy band alone. Despite two decades of studies, it is still not clear whether ULX spectral transitions are due to stochastic variability in the wind or variations in the accretion rate or in the source geometry. The compact object is also unknown for most ULXs. In order to place constraints on to such scenarios and on the structure of the accretion disc, we studied the temporal evolution of the spectral components of the variable source NGC 55 ULX-1. Using recent and archival data obtained with the XMM-Newton satellite, we modelled the spectra with two blackbody components which we interpret as thermal emission from the inner accretion flow and the regions around or beyond the spherization radius. The luminosity–temperature (L–T) relation of each spectral component agrees with the L ∝ T4 relationship expected from a thin disc model, which suggests that the accretion rate is close to the Eddington limit. However, there are some small deviations at the highest luminosities, possibly due to an expansion of the disc and a contribution from the wind at higher accretion rates. Assuming that such deviations are due to the crossing of the Eddington or supercritical accretion rate, we estimate a compact object mass of 6–14 M⊙, favouring a stellar-mass black hole as the accretor.

We present results from radio and X-ray observations of the X-ray transient MAXI J1810-222. The nature of the accretor in this source has not been identified. In this paper, we show results from a quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray monitoring campaign taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory X-ray Telescope (XRT), and the Swift Burst Alert Telescope. We also analyse the X-ray temporal behaviour using observations from the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer. Results show a seemingly peculiar X-ray spectral evolution of MAXI J1810-222 during this outburst, where the source was initially only detected in the soft X-ray band for the early part of the outburst. Then, ∼200 d after MAXI J1810-222 was first detected the hard X-ray emission increased and the source transitioned to a long-lived (∼1.5 yr) bright, harder X-ray state. After this hard state, MAXI J1810-222 returned back to a softer state, before fading and transitioning again to a harder state and then appearing to follow a more typical outburst decay. From the X-ray spectral and timing properties, and the source's radio behaviour, we argue that the results from this study are most consistent with MAXI J1810-222 being a relatively distant (≳6 kpc) black hole X-ray binary. A sufficiently large distance to source can simply explain the seemingly odd outburst evolution that was observed, where only the brightest portion of the outburst was detectable by the all-sky XRTs.

We consider the discretization of elliptic boundary-value problems by variational physics-informed neural networks (VPINNs), in which test functions are continuous, piecewise linear functions on a triangulation of the domain. We define an a posteriori error estimator, made of a residual-type term, a loss-function term, and data oscillation terms. We prove that the estimator is both reliable and efficient in controlling the energy norm of the error between the exact and VPINN solutions. The ASTRI Mini-Array (MA) is an INAF project to build and operate a facility to study astronomical sources emitting at very high-energy in the TeV spectral band. The ASTRI MA consists of a group of nine innovative Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The telescopes will be installed at the Teide Astronomical Observatory of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) on the basis of a host agreement with INAF. Thanks to its expected overall performance, better than those of current Cherenkov telescopes' arrays for energies above \sim 5 TeV and up to 100 TeV and beyond, the ASTRI MA will represent an important instrument to perform deep observations of the Galactic and extra-Galactic sky at these energies., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a class of accreting compact objects with X-ray luminosities above 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The average number of ULXs per galaxy is still not well constrained, especially given the uncertainty on the fraction of ULX transients. Here, we report the identification of a new transient ULX in the galaxy NGC 55 (which we label as ULX-2), thanks to recent XMM-Newton and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory observations. This object was previously classified as a transient X-ray source with a luminosity around a few 10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in a 2010 XMM-Newton observation. Thanks to new and deeper observations ($\sim$ 130 ks each), we show that the source reaches a luminosity peak $>1.6 \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The X-ray spectrum of ULX-2 is much softer than in previous observations and fits in the class of soft ULXs. It can be well described using a model with two thermal components, as often found in ULXs. The time scales of the X-ray variability are of the order of a month and are likely driven by small changes in the accretion rate or due to super-orbital modulations, attributed to precession of the accretion disc, which is similar to other ULXs., Comment: 6 pages, including 4 figures and 2 tables, accepted for pubblication in MNRAS

Determining the nature of the compact object and the accretion mode from broad-band spectroscopy is currently a challenge, but the observed timing properties provide insight into the compact object and details of the geometry and accretion processes. Here, we report a timing analysis for an 800 ks XMM–Newton campaign on the supersoft ultraluminous X-ray source, NGC 247 ULX-1. Deep and frequent dips occur in the X-ray light curve, with the amplitude increasing with increasing energy band. Power spectra and coherence analysis reveals the dipping preferentially occurs on ∼5 and ∼10 ks time-scales. The dips can be caused by either the occultation of the central X-ray source by an optically thick structure, such as warping of the accretion disc, or from obscuration by a wind launched from the accretion disc, or both. This behaviour supports the idea that supersoft ULXs are viewed close to edge-on to the accretion disc.

ABSTRACT Soft Ultra-Luminous X-ray (ULXs) sources are a subclass of the ULXs that can switch from a supersoft spectral state, where most of the luminosity is emitted below 1 keV, to a soft spectral state with significant emission above 1 keV. In a few systems, dips have been observed. The mechanism behind this state transition and the dips nature are still debated. To investigate these issues, we obtained a long XMM–Newton monitoring campaign of a member of this class, NGC 247 ULX-1. We computed the hardness–intensity diagram for the whole data set and identified two different branches: the normal branch and the dipping branch, which we study with four and three hardness–intensity resolved spectra, respectively. All seven spectra are well described by two thermal components: a colder (kTbb ∼ 0.1–0.2 keV) blackbody, interpreted as emission from the photosphere of a radiatively driven wind, and a hotter (kTdisc ∼ 0.6 keV) multicolour disc blackbody, likely due to reprocessing of radiation emitted from the innermost regions. In addition, a complex pattern of emission and absorption lines has been taken into account based on previous high-resolution spectroscopic results. We studied the evolution of spectral parameters and flux of the two thermal components along the two branches and discuss two scenarios possibly connecting the state transition and the dipping phenomenon. One is based on geometrical occultation of the emitting regions, the other invokes the onset of a propeller effect.

The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Mini-Array will be composed of nine imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes at the Observatorio del Teide site. The array will be best suited for astrophysical observations in the 0.3-200 TeV range with an angular resolution of few arc-minutes and an energy resolution of 10-15\%. A core-science programme in the first four years will be devoted to a limited number of key targets, addressing the most important open scientific questions in the very-high energy domain. At the same time, thanks to a wide field of view of about 10 degrees, ASTRI Mini-Array will observe many additional field sources, which will constitute the basis for the long-term observatory programme that will eventually cover all the accessible sky. In this paper, we review different astrophysical Galactic environments, e.g. pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, and gamma-ray binaries, and show the results from a set of ASTRI Mini-Array simulations of some of these field sources made to highlight the expected performance of the array (even at large offset angles) and the important additional observatory science that will complement the core-science program., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of High-Energy Astrophysics

We present the results of an XMM-Newton observation of the slowly rotating (P = 3.4 s), highly magnetized (B approximate to 3 x 10(13) G) radio pulsar PSR J0726-2612. A previous X-ray observation with the Chandra satellite showed that some of the properties of PSR J0726-2612 are similar to those of the X-ray-dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs), a small class of nearby slow pulsars characterized by purely thermal X-ray spectra and undetected in the radio band. We confirm the thermal nature of the X-ray emission of PSR J0726-2612, which can be fitted by the sum of two blackbodies with temperatures kT(1) = 0.074(-0.0011)(+0.006) keV and kT(2) = 0.14(-0.02)(+0.04) keV and emitting radii R-1 = 10.4(-2.8)(+10.8) km and R-2 = 0.5(-0.3)(+0.9) km, respectively (assuming a distance of 1 kpc). A broad absorption line modeled with a Gaussian profile centered at 0.39(-0.03)(+0.02) keV is required in the fit. The pulse profile of PSR J0726-2612 is characterized by two peaks with similar intensity separated by two unequal minima, a shape and pulsed fraction that cannot be reproduced without invoking magnetic beaming of the X-ray emission. The presence of a single radio pulse suggests that in PSR J0726-2612 the angles that the dipole axis and the line of sight make with the rotation axis, xi and chi, respectively, are similar. This geometry differs from that of the two radio-silent XDINSs with double-peaked pulse profiles similar to that of PSR J0726-2612, for which xi similar to 90 degrees and chi similar to 45 degrees have recently been estimated. These results strengthen the similarity between PSR J0726-2612 and the XDINSs and support the possibility that the lack of radio emission from the latter might simply be due to an unfavorable viewing geometry

We model the multiwavelength properties of binaries accreting at super-critical rates with the aim to better understand the observational properties of Ultra-luminous X-ray Sources (ULXs). We calculate an extended grid of binary systems which evolve through Roche Lobe Overflow and undergo case A mass transfer from massive donors (up to 25 Msol) onto massive Black Holes (BH) (up to 100 Msol). Angular momentum loss with the ejection of mass through an outflow is incorporated. We apply our super-Eddington accretion model to these systems, computing their evolutionary tracks on the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for the Johnson and HST photometric systems. We found that the tracks occupy specific positions on the CMD depending on the evolutionary stage of the donor and of the binary. Moreover, their shapes are similar, regardless the BH mass. More massive BHs lead to more luminous tracks. We additionally compute their optical-through-X-ray Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) considering the effects of a Comptonizing corona which surrounds the innermost regions of the disc. We apply our model to four ULXs: NGC4559 X-7, NGC 5204 X-1, Holmberg II X-1 and NGC 5907 ULX-2. We found that accretion onto BHs with mass in the range 35-55 Msol is consistent with to the observational properties of these sources. It is thought that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are mainly powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars or black holes as shown by recent discovery of X-ray pulsations and relativistic winds. This work presents a follow up study of the spectral evolution over two decades of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2, in order to understand the structure of the accretion disc. The primary objective is to determine the shape and nature of the dominant spectral components by investigating their variability with the changes in the source luminosity. We have performed a spectral analysis over the canonical 0.3-10 keV energy band of all the high signal-to-noise XMM-Newton observations, and we have tested a number of different spectral models, which should approximate super-Eddington accretion discs. The baseline model consists of two thermal blackbody components with different temperatures plus an exponential cutoff powerlaw. In particular, the hotter and brighter thermal component describes the emission from the super-Eddington inner disc and the cutoff powerlaw the contribution from the accretion column of the neutron star. Instead, the cooler component describes the emission from the outer region of the disc close to the spherisation radius and the wind. The luminosity-temperature relation for the cool component follows a negative trend, which is not consistent with L$\propto$T$^4$, as expected from a sub-Eddington thin disc of Shakura-Sunayev, nor with L$\propto$T$^2$, as expected for advection-dominated disc, but would rather agree with a wind-dominated X-ray emitting region. Instead, the (L,T) relation for the hotter component is somewhere in between the first two theoretical scenarios. Our findings agree with the super-Eddington scenario and provide further detail on the disc structure. The candidate PeVatron MGRO J1908+06, which shows a hard spectrum beyond 100 TeV, is one of the most peculiar $\gamma$-ray sources in the Galactic plane. Its complex morphology and some possible counterparts spatially related with the VHE emission region, preclude to distinguish between a hadronic or leptonic nature of the $\gamma$-ray emission. In this paper we illustrate a new multiwavelength analysis of MGRO J1908+06, with the aim to shed light on its nature and the origin of its ultra high-energy emission. We performed an analysis of the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO molecular line emission demonstrating the presence of dense molecular clouds spatially correlated with the source region. We also analyzed 12-years of Fermi-LAT data between 10 GeV and 1 TeV finding a counterpart with a hard spectrum ($\Gamma \sim 1.6$). Our reanalysis of XMM-Newton data allowed us to put a more stringent constraint on the X-ray flux from this source. We demonstrate that a single accelerator cannot explain the whole set of multiwavelength data, regardless of whether it accelerates protons or electrons, but a 2-zone model is needed to explain the emission from MGRO J1908+06. The VHE emission seems most likely the superposition of a TeV PWN powered by PSR J1907+0602, in the southern part, and of the interaction between the supernova remnant G40.5-0.5 and the molecular clouds towards the northern region., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Most ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are believed to be stellar mass black holes or neutron stars accreting beyond the Eddington limit. Determining the nature of the compact object and the accretion mode from broadband spectroscopy is currently a challenge, but the observed timing properties provide insight into the compact object and details of the geometry and accretion processes. Here we report a timing analysis for an 800 ks XMM-Newton campaign on the supersoft ultraluminous X-ray source, NGC 247 ULX-1. Deep and frequent dips occur in the X-ray light curve, with the amplitude increasing with increasing energy band. Power spectra and coherence analysis reveals the dipping preferentially occurs on $\sim 5$ ks and $\sim 10$ ks timescales. The dips can be caused by either the occultation of the central X-ray source by an optically thick structure, such as warping of the accretion disc, or from obscuration by a wind launched from the accretion disc, or both. This behaviour supports the idea that supersoft ULXs are viewed close to edge-on to the accretion disc., Comment: Accepted MNRAS version following minor comments. 8 pages, 6 figures

Most ULXs are believed to be powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars and, perhaps, black holes. Above the Eddington rate the disc is expected to thicken and to launch powerful winds through radiation pressure. Winds have been recently discovered in several ULXs. However, it is yet unclear whether the thickening of the disc or the wind variability causes the switch between the classical soft and supersoft states observed in some ULXs. In order to understand such phenomenology and the overall super-Eddington mechanism, we undertook a large (800 ks) observing campaign with XMM-Newton to study NGC 247 ULX-1, which shifts between a supersoft and classical soft ULX state. The new observations show unambiguous evidence of a wind in the form of emission and absorption lines from highly-ionised ionic species, with the latter indicating a mildly-relativistic outflow (-0.17c) in line with the detections in other ULXs. Strong dipping activity is observed in the lightcurve and primarily during the brightest observations, which is typical among soft ULXs, and indicates a close relationship between the accretion rate and the appearance of the dips. The latter is likely due to a thickening of the disc scale-height and the wind as shown by a progressively increasing blueshift in the spectral lines., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Der Fokus der vorliegenden Arbeit liegt auf der Untersuchung der werkstoffkundlichen Zusammenhänge zwischen den thermischen Prozessbedingungen beim Verbundgießen von Kupfer und Aluminium und den daraus resultierenden mikrostrukturellen und technologischen Eigenschaften der Verbunde. Zur Orientierung bezüglich der grundlegenden Prozessparameter und Gewinnung erster Erkenntnisse dienen Verbundgießversuche in Sandformen, auf deren Basis eine modulare Dauerform ausgelegt und gefertigt wird. Mittels dieses Versuchsaufbaus erfolgt eine systematische Parameterstudie der bedeutendsten Prozessparameter, wie der Substrattemperatur des Kupfers, des Volumenverhältnisses von Aluminium zu Kupfer und den Kühlbedingungen., The present thesis focuses on the investigation of the influence of the thermal conditions during composite casting of copper and aluminum on resulting microstructure and technological properties. Initially, composite casting experiments in sand molds serve to define basic process parameters and gain first findings. Based on these a modular permanent mold is designed and manufactured. With this set up a parametric study is conducted to identify the influence of various process parameters, like the substrate temperature of copper, the volume ratio of aluminum to copper and the cooling conditions.

THESEUS is a medium size space mission of the European Space Agency, currently under evaluation for a possible launch in 2032. Its main objectives are to investigate the early Universe through the observation of gamma-ray bursts and to study the gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts and neutrino events. On the other hand, its instruments, which include a wide field of view X-ray (0.3-5 keV) telescope based on lobster-eye focussing optics and a gamma-ray spectrometer with imaging capabilities in the 2-150 keV range, are also ideal for carrying out unprecedented studies in time domain astrophysics. In addition, the presence onboard of a 70 cm near infrared telescope will allow simultaneous multiwavelegth studies. Here we present the THESEUS capabilities for studying the time variability of different classes of sources in parallel to, and without affecting, the gamma-ray bursts hunt.
