Cheating is not a problem unique to Internet-based training. It is a phenomenon that can and does compromise academic integrity in all settings, in both the traditional classroom and in distance-learning environments. But what are the remedies to compromises and abuses of the learning process, and challenges to the testing process in distance education? That is, how can distance education be administered so as to identify, authenticate, and monitor learners, minimize cheating, and thus maintain academic integrity? This paper proposes to provide an answer to this question. The paper discusses the virtual classroom, pointing out that the possibilities for abuse of academic integrity in the virtual classroom require special mechanisms to provide adequate monitoring in distance education. It notes the inevitability of distance education and contends that it is vital for institutions of higher learning that wish to remain in business to take the lead in developing systems that preserve academic integrity in the distance learning setting. The paper then describes some of the approaches to preserving academic integrity in the distance learning setting. In some cases, the approach is one that has been used for many years, while in other cases the approach is a relatively new but promising development. Includes 5 notes. (NKA)

Technology has provided the public with the ability to steal the contents of multiple examinations in a short time period and at minimal cost. No examination is safe from compromise, and the only variable is the extent and sophistication used to bring about the compromise or theft. With the easy availability of micro-video equipment, audio recorders, and still cameras, the traditional methods are essentially archaic. Available technologies that are described are: (1) still cameras in small sizes; (2) audio recorders and transmitters; (3) video cameras, recorders, and transmitters; (4) electromagnetic spectrum interception; and (5) miscellaneous measures, such as the ultraviolet pen and pages. Electronic countermeasures are available, but the most economical and easy to implement countermeasures are through proctors and staff trained in effective observation skills and controlling the exposure of the examination. Computer testing, which had been regarded as a way to ensure examination security, is actually at least as vulnerable as paper and pencil testing. (SLD)

This handbook has been prepared for the proctor at a school using the Hewlett-Packard Mathematics Drill and Practice Program. Procedures are given for supervising students, maintaining the terminals, and supplying information to others concerned with the program. Contents include: (1) introduction; (2) starting the drill and practice program; (3) turning off the terminals; (4) student sign-in and sign-out; (5) getting reports; (6) helping students; (7) maintaining the terminals; (8) using the utility routines; and (9) appendices covering terminal connections and student records. The Basic Occupational Literacy Test (BOLT) measures basic skills of educationally disadvantaged adults in four content areas: reading comprehension, reading vocabulary, arithmetic computation, and arithmetic reasoning. Alternate forms of each subtest are available at each of three or four levels of difficulty. The Wide Range Scale is used to determine the appropriate level of each BOLT test for an individual; instructions for administering and interpreting this scale are given. Guidelines for administering BOLT and step-by-step directions for proctoring each subtest are provided. Conversion tables are included for converting raw test scores obtained on each form to standard scores and General Educational Development (GED) level. Finally, brief instructions are given for reporting and interpreting GED levels, using the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. (CP)

This guide for teachers considering using independent learning describes the Keller Plan and describes ways in which it has been adapted for use in a variety of school situations. A discussion of the Keller Plan and its original formulation is followed by six case studies written by teachers in schools and colleges describing their use of the Keller Plan. The first four case studies deal with the implementation of the Keller Plan in physics courses and the fifth in a chemistry course. Each describes how teachers introduced it into schools were timetabling and other constraints led to a number of modifications to the plan; the sixth study describes how the plan was introduced and organized in a Further Education College where the constraints were quite different. The last chapter comprises a report on a seminar organized by the Scottish Council for Educational Technology and attended by all of the teachers who had written the case studies. This seminar provided a forum for discussion of the case studies and generalizations about the Keller Plan in the classroom were made based on the experience of the participants. During the COVID-19 sanitary crisis of 2020, many exams were hastily moved to online mode. This revived a much-needed debate on the privacy issues of online proctoring of exams, while the validity and fairness of unproctored exams were increasingly questioned. In a randomized control trial, we send a targeted warning to half of the students who were identified as cheaters in previous exams. We then compare their cheating behavior at the final exam to the group of unwarned cheaters. Preliminary results show that the warning proves effective but does not completely annihilates cheating as the cheating strategies of some students become more sophisticated. We conclude that switching traditional exams to online mode should come with proctoring. When proctoring is not possible, credible and effective anti-cheating technologies should be deployed, together with adequate warnings.

The case illustrates the difficult, but successful, journey of choosing and implementing an e-surveillance tool in a Swiss public university during the COVID-19 health crisis. The importance of this case is to show the difficulty of using new technologies in the public administration, given the conjuncture of several aspects in this type of project, especially for academic projects. This feedback also shows the technical, pedagogical and ethical challenges to be consolidated in order to maintain academic integrity in times of crisis.

Background: Online and blended learning need an appropriate assessment strategy which ensures academic integrity. During the pandemic, many universities have chosen for online proctoring. Although some earlier examples suggest that online proctoring may reduce cheating, the potential side-effects of proctoring are largely unknown. Objectives: Therefore, this study aims to identify the effects of proctoring on students' self-reported temptation to cheat and potentially undesirable side-effects, including test anxiety, perceived exam difficulty, and performance. In addition, we examine which contextual and student characteristics affect test anxiety during online exams. Methods: For this, we collected four waves of survey data throughout a year of teaching during the pandemic at one faculty of a Dutch university, resulting in a total sample of 1760 students within 105 courses. Results and Conclusions: Multi-level analyses showed that while proctoring had no effect on the temptation to cheat, exam difficulty or performance, students reported higher levels of test anxiety. Some learning strategies, internet literacy, access to a reliable technology and a dedicated study space as well as gender and financial stress affect their test anxiety. To conclude, the decision to use online proctoring needs to consider the undesirable side-effect on test anxiety. We discuss practical implications for university administrators, educational designers and teachers to reduce test anxiety.

[EN] The Covid-19 pandemic forced universities to convert their traditional face-to-face exams to online exams with doubts as to whether student cheating or technical difficulties would affect their final grades. After taking three of these exams online, we considered comparing their grades with those of previous years on traditional exams. The average mark of the traditional exams before the pandemic was 6.95 over 10, while the average mark of the three exams carried out in the Covid-19 era is 6.64. The student's t test indicated that there are no significant differences between the two types of exams in the mean (p = 0.408), the median (p = 0.378), the range (p = 0.307), the minimum (p = 0.410) and the maximum (p = 0.072). Taking online exams did not modify the exam grades compared to previous years. There is a lot of variability in similar studies in the literature due to cheating that can be performed in online exams. A proctoring system, good question design, and limited exam time can minimize these differences.
