Most digital maps are designed for vehicles and miss a great number of walkways that can facilitate people's daily mobility as pedestrians. Despite of such a fact, most existing map updating approaches only focus on the motorways. To fill the gap, this paper presents VitalAlley, a walkway discovery and verification approach with mobility data from large scale crowdsensing. VitalAlley aims to identify the uncharted walkways from the big but noisy personal mobility data and incorporate these findings into existing incomplete road maps. The implementation of VitalAlley faces the major challenges due to the unstructured nature of the walkways themselves and the noise from crowdsensing data. VitalAlley leverages different aspects of individual mobility to model and estimate the walkable areas, based on which representative walkways that connect known road segments or points of interest are extracted. To verify the new-found walkways, we further propose image based auto-verification with the help of publicly accessible street image database from Google Street View. VitalAlley is implemented and evaluated with real world crowdsensing data from the Singapore National Science Experiment. As a result, 736 walkways (totaling 161 km in distance) are identified from the mobility dataset collected from 108,337 students in Singapore. We manually verify 224 walkways totaling 32.4 km over a 9 km2 district through on-site inspection. The results suggest over 96% accuracy of VitalAlley in discovering the walkways. © 2018 IEEE.

This essay is investigating how ideas influence political decisions, more precisely how ideas influenced the founding of SIDA, Swedens foreign aid institution, in the 1960´s. The goal of the investigation is to show how these ideas mattered and to do that I analyze them by seeing how the can be seen as road maps and focal points. Road maps are supported by a causal belief and focal points define which other actors are possible to cooperate with. The theories which I use mean that ideas can be analyzed as road maps when the question is in its definition phase and as focal points when the question is in its solution phase. My hypothesis is that by analyzing my ideas from both views I can prove that the question existed in two phases at the same time, both a phase of definition and a phase of solution. This hypothesis proved to be consistently valid and corroborated by the research.

An increasing need for goods and passenger transportation drives continued worldwide growth in traffic. As traffic increases environmental concerns, traffic safety, and cost efficiency become ever more important. Advancements in microelectronics open the possibility to address these issues through new advanced driver assistance systems. Applications such as predictive cruise control, automated gearbox control, predictive front lighting control, and hybrid vehicle state-of-charge control decrease the energy consumption of vehicles and increase the safety. These control systems can benefit significantly from preview road grade information. This information is currently obtained using specialized survey vehicles, and is not widely available. This thesis proposes new methods to obtain road grade information using on-board sensors. The task of creating road grade maps is addressed by the proposal of a framework where vehicles using a road network collect the necessary data for estimating the road grade. The estimation can then be carried out locally in the vehicle, or in the presence of a communication link to the infrastructure, centrally. In either case the accuracy of the map increases over time, and costly road surveys can be avoided. This thesis presents a new distributed method for creating accurate road grade maps for vehicle control applications. Standard heavy duty vehicles in normal operation are used to collect measurements. Estimates from multiple passes along a road segment are merged to form a road grade map, which improves each time a vehicle retraces a route. The design and implementation of the road grade estimator are described, and the performance is experimentally evaluated using real vehicles. Three different grade estimation methods, based on different assumption on the road grade signal, are proposed and compared. This series consists of maps that were apparently used to illustrate transportation planning in diverse areas of the state. Two of the maps are county print maps, color annotated to show what appear to be planning districts in Monroe and Westchester counties, respectively. A third map is a laminated published color map of the New York City Subway system, with a separate printed note block affixed giving the operating status of various subway lines.

The series consists of copies of maps designating the official state and county highway system and printed maps annotated to show state-aid and federal-aid highways and routes. The chronological arrangement suggests the maps were brought together because they show changes made to the state highway system as routes were corrected or new construction on the system was proposed, perhaps in response to aid formulas for highway development.

This series consists of state and county highway maps showing completed, improved, and proposed roads. Most are official published county highway maps, annotated to show state and county highway systems corrected to 1936. Also included are publications and correspondence on special highway projects in New York City, dating from the 1940s and early 1950s, and a number of World War II maps indicating military priority highways.

This series consists of sections of U.S. Geological topographic map sheets containing notations representing highway planning or maintenance. The maps use standard topographic symbols to show features which include cities, towns, and villages; county, state, and national boundaries; contour lines and figures of land elevation; bodies of water, marsh and swamp lands; bridges, roads, mines, and railroad lines; and schools and dwellings.

The series consists of annotated U.S. Geological Survey maps bound into two volumes. The printed topographic sheets are annotated with black and red lines representing some aspect of highway planning or maintenance. The arrangement is apparently by geographic quadrangle, with successive maps depicting adjacent areas ranging from west to east across the state. Volume 1 shows counties in western and central New York; volume 2 shows counties in eastern and southern New York.
