- Abstract
Although EVT has slowly evolved into a versatile and powerful tool for publishing historical sources and literary texts on the basis of the XML/TEI format, none of the modifications - and periodic rewrites - of its code base has significantly changed the way in which edition data is handled. Even today, in fact, the main goal is to visualise and navigate such data, no doubt in a sophisticated way (support for multiple edition levels, support for named entities management, text-image linking), but in any case limited to what we might call “core functionalities” of a DSE. Texts encoded in XML/TEI, on the other hand, are a potential treasure trove of information just waiting to be interrogated and made available to the user. In this article I identify three use cases – the processing of special characters encoded by means of the
and elements; the management of named entities, realia and other interesting elements of the text; the use of ontologies within an XML/TEI document – related to literary texts in Old English in order to propose a TEI encoding and a subsequent processing able to put the user in a position to receive answers to complex, transversal queries involving cross-links between different types of elements. - Published

- Abstract
The webinar Medieval archival sources in the digital world. The challenge of treating and visualizing semi-structured data, organized by the Laboratorio di Cultura Digitale and the head of the Engineering Historical Memory project, was held on 22-23 June 2020. This thematic dossier aims to offer a brief account of the results of the workshop held on a virtual platform, with particular attention to future collaboration and experimentation initiatives in the field of processing and extracting information from semi-structured editions of archival documents. Advanced functionalities of this type are in fact essential to broaden the use of digital editions of archival sources and other written documents, making them more flexible and open to algorithms' reading tools. The central problem concerns the relationship between coding and the creation of interfaces that are as simple and immediate as possible, in which the user (human or artificial) can intuitively access.

- Abstract
EVT (Edition Visualization Technology) is a software tool to publish Digital Scholarly Editions on the Web. Its development dates back to the start of this decade, and it can boast quite an interesting development history: it was started as a Project-Based Learning initiative within the scope of a single edition project, but it has evolved in a versatile tool valued and used by many researchers. The current development version is based on the beta that has been released in October 2017: it surely is more feature-rich if compared to the first alpha version released in July 2016, however it is still very much critical edition-oriented. A full version supporting diplomatic / interpretative editions, complete with a new, powerful image viewer and a search engine, will be released in the second half of 2019. This paper will report on EVT progress and it will also propose some remarks about its development and the research questions that it entails, namely: the problems that derive from designing an User Interface that must take into account a great number of elements interacting on different layers; the new features that will be introduced in the first stable version and the impact that they will have on the final users; the soundness of the open source development model and the relationship with other projects.

- Abstract
The present volume “Digital Scholarly Editions as Interfaces” is the follow-up publication of the same-titled symposium that was held in 2016 at the University of Graz and the twelfth volume of the publication series of the Institute for Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE). It is the result of a successful collaboration between members of the Centre for Information Modelling at the University of Graz, the Digital Scholarly Editions Initial Training Network DiXiT, a EC Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, and the IDE. All articles have undergone a peer reviewing process and are published in Open Access. They document the current state of research on design, application and implications of both user and machine interfaces in the context of digital scholarly editions. The editors of the volume are grateful to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for enabling not only the symposium in 2016 but also the publication of the present volume with their financial support. Special thanks are also due to the staff of the Centre for Information Modelling, above all Georg Vogeler, who contributed to the successful organisation and completion of the symposium and this volume with their ideas and continuous support. Furthermore we want to thank all authors as well as all peer reviewers for the professional cooperation during the publication process. Last but not least we want to thank the many people involved in creating the present volume: Barbara Bollig (Trier) for language corrections and formal suggestions, Bernhard Assmann and Patrick Sahle (Cologne) for support and advises during the typese ing process, Selina Galka (Graz) for verifying and archiving (archive.org) all referenced URLs in January 2018, Julia Sorouri (Cologne) for the design of the cover as well as the artist Franz Konrad (Graz), who provided his painting “Desktop” (www.franzkonrad.com/gallery/desktop-2008-2010/) as cover image. - Abstract
The IV Convegno annuale dell’Associazione Italiana di Informatica Umanistica e Cultura Digitale, took place in Turin, December 2015, with topic “Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage: which relation?”. The organizers aimed to find similarities and points of contact between the wide landscapes of the Digital Humanities and the Cultural Heritage. It's worth to notice how the latter actually applies tools and methodologies belonging to the former, but a strong and long-term relation between the two fields has not yet been set. Such a lack of communication is due to the green research field of DH in Italy, and to its low acceptance in Academy. Nonetheless, researchers of DH often access libraries, archives and museums in order to accomplish their research tasks, and their methods present lots of similarities.

- Abstract
The Codice Pelavicino Digitale Project aims to publish an online digital edition of the relevant manuscript of the XIII century. In this paper features of the edition and related issues are addressed. Secondly we explain motivations for choosing a digital edition as a medium: we address the background, and common concerns in the context of Academy and clerical and historical archives. Finally we give insights on the international standard adopted to markup the text, i.e. XML-TEI, and EVT, a tool adopted to generate the final website and display texts and images.
