Lillian June Bailey Henschel (1/17/1860-11/4/1901) was born in Columbus to Lucian C. Bailey and Helen Hayden, who was the niece of Pete Hayden. Helen gave singing lessons and was the soprano in the choir of Trinity Episcopal Church. At a young age Lillian showed an aptitude for music. By the time she was 15 her parents moved to Boston Massachusetts where she studied with her uncle Charles Hayden, a well-known teacher. She later studied under Madame Rudersdor for 2 years and in 1876 made her singing debut at age 17. In 1877 she went to Paris to study under Madame Viardot-Garcia. She moved to London in 1878 and made her debut with the London Philharmonic Society While there she met her future husband Isidor George Henschel. Lillian returned to Boston in 1880 and int 1881 married Henschel. While they were in Boston, George became the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The couple made moved back to London and made it their permanent home in London. Lillian continued to perform until her death in 1901.
