Nation membership is the most referred to form of social grouping. Nationalism and primary allegiance to one’s national group has been and remains seen as highly influential in social sciences, politics and overall mainstream discourse. Yet, nationalist thought and sense of belonging to a greater imagined community such as a nation requires an idea of cultural sameness. In a country such as Canada, with its large and diverse–multicultural and multilingual–population, what form (if any) does this national identity take? The main question this exploratory study aims to answer is how do young Canadians from different linguistic backgrounds negotiate their Canadian identity? This study uses mixed qualitative methods to explore the complex narratives of young Canadians in Quebec and Ontario; semi-structured interviews supplemented by online surveys. Collected narratives illustrate the complex and situated nature of identity work, offering diverse, fluid and at times contradictory accounts of Canadianness. Quebecois participants showcased highly contrasted identity stances ranging from complete rejection of Canadianness to pride and strong embracing of Canadian values. On the Ontarian side, while most respondents share this feeling of Canadian pride, a perceptible number of young Canadians shared a sense of disconnect with the imagined Canadian community and voiced cynicism over Canadian values and beliefs. Ultimately, the main finding of this study is a general difficulty in expressing Canadian sameness and unity. What these results imply is that in the Canadian context, the relevance of nationalism and thus national group as a primary social influence is debated and debatable. This study open doors to further research in the field of national identity in multicultural countries.

A pilot study by 6 Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs) explored how bibliometrics can be used to assess research influence.Evaluators from 6 institutions shared data on publications (4202 total) they supported, and conducted a combined analysis with state-of-the-art tools. This paper presents selected results based on the tools from 2 widely used vendors for bibliometrics: Thomson Reuters and Elsevier.Both vendors located a high percentage of publications within their proprietary databases (>90%) and provided similar but not equivalent bibliometrics for estimating productivity (number of publications) and influence (citation rates, percentage of papers in the top 10% of citations, observed citations relative to expected citations). A recently available bibliometric from the National Institutes of Health Office of Portfolio Analysis, examined after the initial analysis, showed tremendous potential for use in the CTSA context.Despite challenges in making cross-CTSA comparisons, bibliometrics can enhance our understanding of the value of CTSA-supported clinical and translational research.

Results from large-eddy simulations are reported for the flow and heat transfer in the annular gap between two concentric cylinders with the outer cylinder stationary and the inner cylinder rotating about its longitudinal axis. The objective of the study was to document the effects of destabilizing rotation on the turbulent transport of heat and momentum. The inner cylinder was heated by applying a constant heat flux while the conditions at the outer wall were adiabatic. Results were obtained for a stationary inner cylinder to serve as baseline for isolating the effects of rotation, and for the inner cylinder rotated at two different rotation numbers viz. 0.21 and 0.86. The Reynolds number was set at 9000 for all cases. With the outer cylinder stationary and the inner cylinder rotating, the effects of rotation are to destabilize the turbulence leading to enhanced mixing and significant increase in wall shear stress and Nusselt number. Additional effects include the displacement from each other of the points where the Reynolds stresses and the corresponding rates of strain are zero, and the non-alignment of their respective directions. These and other results reported herein provide a useful contribution to the very limited literature on heated turbulent flows destabilized by rotation, and can serve as benchmark to aid in the development and validation of turbulence closures for engineering applications.

Language attitudes and their effects on foreign language acquisition have been subject to extensive research. The consensus amongst theorists and teachers is that positive attitudes toward a language facilitate learning and end proficiency in that target language. Although studies looking into language attitudes have been conducted in a multitude of environments and toward a wide array of languages and dialects, no research has yet focused on comparing the attitudes of French, Swiss and Belgian speakers of French toward the English language. This study looks into the differences in attitudes of speakers in these three regions and aims at finding a correlation with their respective English proficiency. Evidence of attitudes was gathered through an online survey using a Matched Guise technique. The results of this study indicate that French speakers of Switzerland exhibit the most positive attitudes toward English, attitudes that correspond to the significantly higher proficiency found in Switzerland. Confirming the hypothesis based on proficiency and existing literature, France showed the least positive attitudes out of the three surveyed countries. French speakers from Belgium, on the other hand, did not prefer French to English as anticipated on the basis of the declining English proficiency recorded in Wallonia. These findings indicate a need for future research into the effects of attitudes on language proficiency across the different French-speaking populations.

Recent JET experiments have been dedicated to the studies of fusion reactions between deuterium (D) and Helium-3 (3He) ions using neutral beam injection (NBI) in synergy with third harmonic ion cyclotron radio-frequency heating (ICRH) of the beam. This scenario generates a fast ion deuterium tail enhancing DD and D3He fusion reactions. Modelling and measuring the fast deuterium tail accurately is essential for quantifying the fusion products. This paper presents the modelling of the D distribution function resulting from the NBI+ICRF heating scheme, reinforced by a comparison with dedicated JET fast ion diagnostics, showing an overall good agreement. Finally, a sawtooth activity for these experiments has been observed and interpreted using SPOT/RFOF simulations in the framework of Porcelli's theoretical model, where NBI+ICRH accelerated ions are found to have a strong stabilizing effect, leading to monster sawteeth.

The HEALTHY study was a multi-site randomized trial designed to determine whether a 3-year school-based intervention targeting nutrition and physical activity behaviors could effectively reduce risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes in middle school children. Pilot and formative studies were conducted to inform the development of the intervention components and the process evaluation methods for the main trial. During the main trial, both qualitative and quantitative assessments monitored the fidelity of the intervention and motivated modifications to improve intervention delivery. Structured observations of physical education classes, total school food environments, classroom-based educational modules, and communications and promotional campaigns provided verification that the intervention was delivered as intended. Interviews and focus groups yielded a multidimensional assessment of how the intervention was delivered and received, as well as identifying the barriers to and facilitators of the intervention across and within participating schools. Interim summaries of process evaluation data were presented to the study group as a means of ensuring standardization and quality of the intervention across the seven participating centers. Process evaluation methods and procedures documented the fidelity with which the HEALTHY study was implemented across 21 intervention schools and identified ways in which the intervention delivery might be enhanced throughout the study.
