Dit rapport presenteert de resultaten van een verkenning waarbij de Nationale aanpak productverbetering is getest bij de branches 'soepen' en 'sauzen'. Het doel is dat de aanpak kan worden verbeterd op basis van de bevindingen van de verkenning.

The rapid developments in new communication technologies have facilitated the popularization of digital games, which has translated into an exponential growth of the game industry in recent decades. The ubiquitous presence of digital games has resulted in an expansion of the applications of these games from mere entertainment purposes to a great variety of serious purposes. In this edited volume, we narrow the scope of attention by focusing on what game theorist Ian Bogost has called 'persuasive games', that is, gaming practices that combine the dissemination of information with attempts to engage players in particular attitudes and behaviors. This volume offers a multifaceted reflection on persuasive gaming, that is, on the process of these particular games being played by players. The purpose is to better understand when and how digital games can be used for persuasion by further exploring persuasive games and some other kinds of persuasive playful interaction as well. The book critically integrates what has been accomplished in separate research traditions to offer a multidisciplinary approach to understanding persuasive gaming that is closely linked to developments in the industry by including the exploration of relevant case studies.

In employment law, the concepts of 'intent' and 'deliberate recklessness' occur in various contexts. The same or very similar concepts are also used in other areas of private law, such as insurance law, transport law and traffic law. However, the concepts are not always interpreted in the same way. This raises the question whether the way in which the concepts of intent and deliberate recklessness are interpreted in private law is internally consistent with the way in which these concepts are interpreted in employment law. The dissertation discusses the interpretation of 'intent' and 'deliberate recklessness' in both employment law and other areas of private law. Parliamentary history, literature and the case law of the Supreme Court as well as lower courts are extensively examined. Subsequently, the findings relating to employment law and private law are compared with each other from the perspective of three viewpoints: terminology, ratio and type of legal subject. The differences and similarities observed are examined and cross-references are made between the various areas of law.

Wanneer educatieve teksten duidelijk zijn en de aandacht vasthouden, kunnen ze helpen bij het verbeteren van de leer- en leesprestaties van leerlingen. Een manier om de aandacht beter vast te houden is door een tekst concreter te maken door ze levendiger te maken. Dat kan bijvoorbeeld door er zogeheten narratieve elementen aan toe te voegen. Dit zijn drie soorten elementen die als volgt zijn gedefinieerd in dit onderzoek: specifieke gebeurtenissen, specifieke personages en de innerlijke wereld van personages. Op dit moment is er nog weinig onderzoek gedaan naar het voorkomen van narratieve elementen in educatieve teksten, daarom probeert dit onderzoek daar een eerste stap mee te zetten. De hoeveelheid narratieve elementen in middelbare onderwijsboeken zou invloed kunnen hebben op de leer- en leesprestaties van leerlingen. De verwachting is dat er bij het vwo een hoger abstractieniveau van de tekst is dan bij het vmbo. Narratieve elementen maken een tekst concreter, dus het toevoegen van meer narratieve elementen verlaagt het abstractieniveau van een tekst. Dit eindwerkstuk zal proberen te beantwoorden of er in de educatieve teksten voor het vmbo meer gebruik wordt gemaakt van narratieve elementen dan in educatieve teksten voor het vwo. De bevindingen uit de literatuur monden uit in de volgende onderzoeksvraag: In hoeverre is er een verschil in narratieve elementen in biologieteksten voor 2-vmbo-t en 2-vwo? Voor dit onderzoek is een corpusanalyse uitgevoerd bij 73 teksten uit Nectar 5de editie van zowel 2-vmbo-t (n=33) als 2-vwo (n=40) om de onderzoeksvraag te beantwoorden. Tijdens de analyse zijn er geen verschillen gevonden in aantal narratieve elementen tussen de verschillende niveaus. Voor deze steekproef is er dus geen verschil gevonden tussen 2-vmbo-t en 2-vwo. Dit suggereert dat de auteurs geen onderscheid maken tussen niveaus op het gebied van het toevoegen van narratieve elementen. PURPOSE: The study purpose was to investigate the acceptability and utility of, and preference for, wearable activity trackers (WATs) amongst cancer survivors living in regional and remote areas of Western Australia. METHODS: Twenty participants were recruited (Mean age = 63 years, SD = 13) to test two to three trackers from five available models (Fitbit Alta, Garmin Vivofit 2, Garmin Vivosmart, Polar loop 2 and Polar A300). Participants wore each device for two weeks, followed by a one-week washout period between devices. Interviews were conducted with participants to explore user perceptions and experiences. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four main themes emerged: (i) Consciousness raising; (ii) Prompts and Feedback; (iii) Accuracy and registry of activities; and, (iv) WAT preferences and features. CONCLUSIONS: WATs were acceptable and useful to cancer survivors. WATs increased self-awareness of physical activity, provided real time feedback in relation to step goals, and reinforced progress and efforts towards goals. The aesthetics of the WATs were deemed crucial in determining preference and likelihood of use. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: Future interventions may do well to have two different WATs available for participants to choose from, according to activity preferences, aesthetic preferences, and display size.

Surveys differ in their topics, language, style and design, and, consequently, in their sensitivity to measurement error. Survey literature presents a range of characteristics of survey items that are assumed to be related to the magnitude and frequency of measurement error. In terms of questionnaire design and testing, it would be very useful to have a questionnaire profile that is a summary of the characteristics of the items contained in a questionnaire. This holds especially true in the context of multi-mode surveys where the detection of measurement error is crucial. The questionnaire profiles may be derived from scores that coders assign to the items in a questionnaire. Given that agreement among coders may be relatively low, as we observe, the number of coders must be large to ensure sufficient precision of the profiles. For multiple surveys, the coding workload may then become infeasible. In this paper, we propose methodology for the estimation of questionnaire profiles when a pool of coders is randomly allocated to a series of surveys. The methodology is based on multiple imputation and applied to eleven general purpose surveys in the Netherlands..

In multi - mode questionnaire design, usually some consideration is given to mode - specific measurement error. Despite this consideration, however, these measurement effects can be unexpectedly large. For this reason, there is a strong incentive to better predict mea surement effects. This may be done by constructing profiles of a questionnaire, in which relevant item characteristics are summarized. For all items of a survey, these item characteristics need to be coded and combined. In this paper, we evaluated a list o f item characteristics that literature has reported as relevant to mode - specific measurement error. Most importantly, we evaluated the reliability of the coding of such characteristics. Our results showed that intercoder reliability can be low for the most relevant characteristics. This may be explained by the difficulty of defining the item characteristics and the inherent subjectivity with which these item characteristics are coded. Finally, some sug gestions a re made for coping with low intercoder reliabi lity.

Games for Health Europe 2014: The 4th Conference on Gaming and Playful Interaction in Healthcare (Utrecht, October 27-28, 2014), Contains fulltext : 249413.pdf (Author’s version postprint ) (Open Access), The depression prevention video game SPARX was shown to be equally as effective as the classroom-based depression prevention program 'Op Volle Kracht' (OVK) in reducing depressive symptoms among adolescents girls. Because video games are known for their engaging qualities, this study examined possible motivational benefits of SPARX compared to OVK. No differences in autonomous and controlled motivation were found between conditions at any time point. However, OVK was negatively associated with autonomous motivation during the program, while SPARX and the OVK and SPARX combined were associated negatively with controlled motivation during the programs. Additionally, autonomous motivation and controlled motivation at the start of the interventions and controlled motivation half-way through the interventions was found to positively influence long-term depressive symptoms. Results indicate that depression prevention programs including video games can beneficially influence motivation. Further research is needed to delineate the effects of video game prevention programs on motivation.

Beyond that, we believe Game Jams can also be seen as a design research method, situated in the research-through-design tradition, to create knowledge in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The goal of this Game Jam is thus twofold: first, participants will use the Game Jam approach to investigate a research question; second, participants can, through actual practice, identify advantages and disadvantages of Game Jams as a research method. Hereby the Game Jam workshop provides a unique opportunity for HCI practitioners and researchers to gain experience in applying game-oriented methods for research.

Schizophrenia is a serious and challenging medical illness, which often interferes with a person's ability to think clearly, to distinguish reality from fantasy, to manage emotions, to make decisions, and to relate to others (NAMI). Schizophrenia affects around one in a hundred people in the course of their lives. It affects men and women equally, and it seems to be more common in city areas and in some minority groups (RCPsych ). It is still unclear what causes the illness, but it is probably a combination of several things, mainly genetics and the environment in which one grows up. In the Netherlands, about one out of a hundred-twenty-five people suffer from schizophrenia (0.8 % of the total population). These numbers are much more dramatic for immigrant groups, where the risk of schizophrenia is four to seven times higher. The risk is highest for second-generation immigrants. New research suggests that social exclusion is one of the most important triggers of psychosis for people with a genetic vulnerability (Selten, Verzwegen 29). This is true for all immigrant groups, particularly Moroccan immigrants living in the Netherlands and African-Caribbean immigrants living in the Great Britain. The research question of this thesis is “how well do information pamphlets about schizophrenia take cultural differences into account?” I will classify the Dutch, Moroccan, British and African-Caribbean cultures according to some of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions (Verluyten 156-201), namely Individualism-Collectivism, Uncertainty Avoidance and Femininity-Masculinity. Besides Hofstede, attention will be given to Direct-Indirect Communication, because there are strong suggestions that there is a link between collective societies and indirect communication (Kim, Sharkey and Singelis in Hua 51). The suitability of the pamphlets for the different population groups will be based on an analysis of words in the pamphlets that can be linked to certain aspects of the dimensions in questio

Dit scriptieonderzoek beschrijft een onderzoek naar het Nederlands van tweede-taalleerders. Het op latere leeftijd leren van een nieuwe taal is vaak lastig en met name het verwerven van een native-like accent is een zware opgave. Dit onderzoek richtte zich op het accent van mensen die op latere leeftijd Nederlands leerden. Voor dit onderzoek zijn geluidsopnames gemaakt van 13 volwassenen met verschillende taalachtergronden die een cursus Nederlands volgden. Hen werd gevraagd een korte taalvaardigheidstest te doen en een tekst voor te lezen. Op basis van de opgenomen spraak is op verschillende manieren geprobeerd om te bepalen of het mogelijk is om de afstand te bepalen van het accent van de sprekers ten opzichte van een moedertaalspreker van het Nederlands. Dit is gedaan door middel van het maken van consensustranscripties, het uitvoeren van een akoestische analyse en het uitvoeren van een perceptieonderzoek waarbij moedertaalsprekers van het Nederlands de geluidsfragmenten moesten beoordelen. Na statistische analyses bleek dat er correlaties bestonden tussen de meetmethoden en dat ze een indicatie kunnen geven wat betreft de mate van accent ten opzichte van een normspreker. Over het algemeen gold dat personen die goed scoorden voor een bepaald onderdeel, dat ook deden voor de andere onderdelen. Andersom gold dat wanneer personen laag scoorden voor een onderdeel, zij ook minder goede scores hadden voor de andere onderdelen.

In developed countries 3% of infants exhibit cow’s milk allergy (CMA). Although most infants outgrow CMA, immunoglobulin (Ig)E-mediated CMA may predispose for development of other allergies and asthma later in life. Clinical symptoms may involve the skin, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract, and can even lead to a systemic anaphylactic reaction. Both whey and casein allergic mice exhibited systemic acute allergic symptoms as reflected by an increase in ear swelling upon intradermal challenge. However striking differences were observed between the sensitizing capacities of whey and casein. Whey sensitized mice revealed enhanced serum levels of whey- specific IgE, the classical allergic marker whereas casein sensitized mice had allergic symptoms in the absence of casein-specific IgE. However, immunoglobulin free light chain (Ig-fLC) antagonist (F991) abrogated the development of allergic symptoms in the casein sensitized mice only. The relevance for Ig-fLC in human allergic disease was confirmed in infants at risk for allergy. Serum Ig-fLC concentrations were enhanced in infants that had developed atopic dermatitis (AD). In order to investigate the preventive effect of dietary short-chain galacto-(scGOS) and long-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (lcFOS) and/or Bifidobacterium breve M-16V mice were fed the diets during oral whey sensitization. The scGOS/lcFOS (ratio 9:1) mixture (Immunofortis) contains non-digestible carbohydrates that selectively stimulate the growth of bacteria which supports host health. These prebiotics mimick non-digestible carbohydrates such as present in breast milk. The synbiotic mixture containing both the prebiotics and Bifidobacterium breve M-16V was most effective in diminishing the acute allergic skin and anaphylactic response upon allergen challenge hence protecting against development of CMA symptoms. Dit bestand bestaat vier verslagen van onderzoeksprojecten uitgevoerd voor centrum van landbouwkundig onderzoek in Suriname. Twee van de verslagen gaan over successie op verlaten kostgronden. De andere twee verslagen gaan over successie op ontbost terrein en vegetatiekundige veranderingen in ongerept drooglandbos.
