The metal-insulator transition driven by electronic correlations is one of the most fundamental concepts in condensed matter. In mixed-valence compounds, this transition is often accompanied by charge ordering (CO), resulting in the emergence of complex phases and unusual behaviors. The famous example is the archetypal mixed-valence mineral magnetite, Fe3O4, exhibiting a complex charge-ordering below the Verwey transition, whose nature has been a subject of long-time debates. In our study, using high-resolution X-ray diffraction supplemented by resistance measurements and DFT+DMFT calculations, the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of recently synthesized mixed-valence Fe4O5are investigated under pressure to ∼100 GPa. Our calculations, consistent with experiment, reveal that at ambient conditions Fe4O5is a narrow-gap insulator characterized by the original Verwey-type CO. Under pressure Fe4O5undergoes a series of electronic and magnetic-state transitions with an unusual compressional behavior above ∼50 GPa. A site-dependent collapse of local magnetic moments is followed by the site-selective insulator-to-metal transition at ∼84 GPa, occurring at the octahedral Fe sites. This phase transition is accompanied by a 2+ to 3+ valence change of the prismatic Fe ions and collapse of CO. We provide a microscopic explanation of the complex charge ordering in Fe4O5which "unifies" it with the behavior of two archetypal examples of charge- or bond-ordered materials, magnetite and rare-earth nickelates (RNiO3). We find that at low temperatures the Verwey-type CO competes with the "trimeron"/"dimeron" charge ordered states, allowing for pressure/temperature tuning of charge ordering. A site-selective defluorinative sp(3) C-H alkylation of secondary amides that rapidly and reliably incorporates gemdifluoroalkene motifs into previously unfunctionalized sp(3) sites is disclosed. This protocol is distinguished by its mild conditions, wide scope, and exquisite site-selectivity, thus unlocking a new platform to introduce carbonyl isosteres at saturated hydrocarbon sites.

A photoelectronionion coincidence experiment has been carried out on the amino acid molecule cysteine after core-ionization of the O 1s, N 1s, C 1s, and S 2p orbitals. A number of different dissociation channels have been identified. Some of them show strong site-selective dependence that can be attributed to a combination of nuclear motion in the core-ionized state and Auger processes that populate different final electronic states in the dication., QC 20141114

1,3-Dienyl-2-silanols with a wide range of substitution patterns are readily obtained by palladium-catalyzed silaboration of 1,3-enynes followed by Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling with aryl bromides. Subsequent Hiyama-Denmark cross coupling with aryl iodides provides either 1,3- or 1,2-dienes in high yields. The site selectivity can be fully controlled by the choice of activator used in the coupling reaction. In the presence of strong bases such as NaOt-Bu, KOt-Bu, and NaH, clean formation of 1,2-dienes takes place via allylic rearrangement. In contrast, stereo- and site-selective formation of tetra- and trisubstituted 1,3-dienes results from use of Ag 2O and Bu 4NF·3H 2O, respectively, as activators. Under microwave heating at 100 °C the base-mediated cross couplings are largely accelerated and are completed within one hour or less.
