Psychotic disorders as well as psychosis proneness in the general population have been associated with perceptual instability, suggesting weakened predictive processing. Sleep disturbances play a prominent role in psychosis and schizophrenia, but it is unclear whether perceptual stability diminishes with sleep deprivation, and whether the effects of sleep deprivation differ as a function of psychosis proneness. In the current study, we aimed to clarify this matter. In this preregistered study, 146 participants successfully completed an intermittent version of the random dot kinematogram (RDK) task and the 21-item Peters Delusion Inventory (PDI-21) to assess perceptual stability and psychosis proneness, respectively. Participants were randomized to sleep either as normal (8 to 9 h in bed) (n = 72; Mage = 24.7, SD = 6.2, 41 women) or to stay awake through the night (n = 74; Mage = 24.8, SD = 5.1, 44 women). Sleep deprivation resulted in diminished perceptual stability, as well as in decreases in perceptual stability over the course of the task. However, we did not observe any association between perceptual stability and PDI-21 scores, nor a tendency for individuals with higher PDI-21 scores to be more vulnerable to sleep-deprivation-induced decreases in perceptual stability. The present study suggests a compromised predictive processing system in the brain after sleep deprivation, but variation in psychosis trait is not related to greater vulnerability to sleep deprivation in our dataset. Further studies in risk groups and patients with psychosis are needed to evaluate whether sleep loss plays a role in the occurrence of objectively measured perceptual-related clinical symptoms.

Background: Conduct disorder (CD) is characterized by severe aggressive and antisocial behavior. Initial evidence suggests neural deficits and aberrant eye gaze pattern during emotion processing in CD; both concepts, however, have not yet been studied simultaneously. The present study assessed the functional brain correlates of emotional face processing with and without consideration of concurrent eye gaze behavior in adolescents with CD compared to typically developing (TD) adolescents. Methods: 58 adolescents (23CD/35TD; average age = 16 years/range = 14-19 years) underwent an implicit emotional face processing task. Neuroimaging analyses were conducted for a priori-defined regions of interest (insula, amygdala, and medial orbitofrontal cortex) and using a full-factorial design assessing the main effects of emotion (neutral, anger, fear), group and the interaction thereof (cluster-level, p < .05 FWE-corrected) with and without consideration of concurrent eye gaze behavior (i.e., time spent on the eye region). Results: Adolescents with CD showed significant hypo-activations during emotional face processing in right anterior insula compared to TD adolescents, independent of the emotion presented. In-scanner eye-tracking data revealed that adolescents with CD spent significantly less time on the eye, but not mouth region. Correcting for eye gaze behavior during emotional face processing reduced group differences previously observed for right insula. Conclusions: Atypical insula activation during emotional face processing in adolescents with CD may partly be explained by attentional mechanisms (i.e., reduced gaze allocation to the eyes, independent of the emotion presented). An increased understanding of the mechanism causal for emotion processing deficits observed in CD may ultimately aid the development of personalized intervention programs.

Visual working memory (VWM) allows for keeping visual information available for upcoming goal-directed behavior, while new visual input is processed concurrently. Interactions between the mnemonic and perceptual systems cause VWM to affect the processing of visual input in a content-specific manner: visual input that is initially suppressed from consciousness is detected faster when it matches rather than mismatches the content of VWM. It is currently under debate whether such mnemonic influences on perception occur prior to or after conscious access. To address this issue, we investigated whether VWM content modulates the neural response to visual input that remains suppressed from consciousness. We measured fMRI responses to interocularly suppressed stimuli in 20 human participants performing a delayed match-to-sample task: Participants were retro-cued to memorize one of two geometrical shapes for subsequent recognition. During retention, an interocularly suppressed peripheral stimulus (the probe) was briefly presented, which was either of the cued (memorized) or uncued (not memorized) shape category. We found no evidence that VWM content modulated the neural response to the probe. Substantial evidence for the absence of this modulation was found despite leveraging a highly liberal analysis approach: (1) selecting regions of interest that were particularly prone to detecting said modulation, and (2) using directional Bayesian tests favoring the presence of the hypothesized modulation. We did observe faster detection of memory-matching compared to memory-mismatching probes in a behavioral control experiment, thus validating the stimulus set. We conclude that VWM impacts the processing of visual input only once suppression is mostly alleviated.

Beweise für die kurzfristige Aufrechterhaltung abstrakter, verbaler oder kategorischer Informationen sind selten. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Untersuchung der neuronalen Repräsentation von WM-Inhalten auf verschiedenen Abstraktionsebenen. Ich stelle hier drei empirische Studien vor, in denen fMRT, multivariate Musteranalyse oder probabilistische Modelle als Hauptmethoden eingesetzt wurden. Die erste Studie identifizierte kortikale Regionen, die den WM-Inhalt eines Skripts behielten. Chinesische Muttersprachler wurden gebeten, sich bekannte chinesische Zeichen zu merken, was die verbale Kodierung stark fördern. Die Ergebnisse zeigten links lateralisierte sprachbezogene Hirnareale als Kandidatenspeicher für verbale Inhalte. Evidence on short-term maintenance of abstract verbal or categorical information is scarce. This thesis aims to investigate neural representation of WM content at different levels of abstraction. I present here three empirical studies that employed fMRI, multivariate pattern analysis or probabilistic modeling as major methods. The first study identified cortical regions that retained WM content of a script. Native Chinese speakers were asked to memorize well-known Chinese characters which strongly facilitated verbal coding. Results indicated left lateralized language-related brain areas as candidate stores for verbal content. The second and the third studies aimed to test the hypothesis that color is memorized as a combination of the low-level visual representation and the abstract categorical representation. The second study utilized a conventional sensory encoding model and a novel empirical-based categorical encoding model to characterize two sources of neural representations. Color information was decoded in three color-related ROIs: V1, V4, VO1, and notably, an elevation in categorical representation was observed in more anterior cortices. In the third study, the delayed behavioral response was examined, which exhibited a systematic bias pattern; a probabilistic dual-content model was implemented, which produced response patterns highly correlated with experimental results; this confirmed the hypothesis of dual-content mnemonic representations. These studies together suggest a division of labor along the rostral-caudal axis of the brain, based on the abstraction level of memorized contents.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest that there are increased rates of schizophrenia and related psychoses in first- and second-generation migrants and refugees. Here, we present a meta-analysis on the incidence of non-affective psychotic disorders among first- and second-generation migrants. We found substantial evidence for an increased relative risk of incidence among first- and second-generation migrants compared to the native population. As heterogeneity of included studies was high, effect estimates should be interpreted with caution and as guiding values rather than exact risk estimates. We interpret our findings in the context of social exclusion and isolation stress, and provide an explanatory framework that links cultural differences in verbal communication and experienced discrimination with the emergence of psychotic experiences and their neurobiological correlates. In this context, we discuss studies observing stress-dependent alterations of dopamine neurotransmission in studies among migrants versus non-migrants as well as in subjects with psychotic disorders. We suggest that social stress effects can impair contextualization of the meaning of verbal messages, which can be accounted for in Bayesian terms by a reduced precision of prior beliefs relative to sensory data, causing increased prediction errors and resulting in a shift towards the literal or concrete meaning of words. Compensatory alterations in higher-level beliefs, e.g., in the form of generalized interpretations of ambiguous interactions as hostile behavior, may contribute to psychotic experiences in migrants. We thus suggest that experienced discrimination and social exclusion is at the core of increased rates of psychotic experiences in subjects with a migration background.

Based on the hypothesis that sensory data would be down-weighed after unreliable feedback , we predicted that perceptual performance would deteriorate and that perceptual inference would shift towards experimentally induced priors. Further, we investigated whether the sensory data representations in the primary visual cortex (V1) deteriorate as a result of unreliable feedback. Reliable feedback was used as a control condition in all the experiments. Data from both studies demonstrated that performance did decrease following unreliable feedback compared to reliable feedback. Moreover, observers increasingly relied on prior information as the feedback about their percepts became unreliable. At the neural level, low-level stimulus representations deteriorated in V1 with unreliable feedback. To sum up, our results show that inducing beliefs about the reliability of sensory information by manipulating performance feedback can systematically influence perceptual inference and that these changes manifest at the earliest stages of cortical sensory processing.

Psychiatric disorders are ubiquitously characterized by debilitating social impairments. These difficulties are thought to emerge from aberrant social inference. In order to elucidate the underlying computational mechanisms, patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (N = 29), schizophrenia (N = 31), and borderline personality disorder (N = 31) as well as healthy controls (N = 34) performed a probabilistic reward learning task in which participants could learn from social and non-social information. Patients with schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder performed more poorly on the task than healthy controls and patients with major depressive disorder. Broken down by domain, borderline personality disorder patients performed better in the social compared to the non-social domain. In contrast, controls and major depressive disorder patients showed the opposite pattern and schizophrenia patients showed no difference between domains. In effect, borderline personality disorder patients gave up a possible overall performance advantage by concentrating their learning in the social at the expense of the non-social domain. We used computational modeling to assess learning and decision-making parameters estimated for each participant from their behavior. This enabled additional insights into the underlying learning and decision-making mechanisms. Patients with borderline personality disorder showed slower learning from social and non-social information and an exaggerated sensitivity to changes in environmental volatility, both in the non-social and the social domain, but more so in the latter. Regarding decision-making the modeling revealed that compared to controls and major depression patients, patients with borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia showed a stronger reliance on social relative to non-social information when making choices. Background: The atypical processing of eye contact is a characteristic hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The severity of these symptoms, however, is thought to lie on a continuum that extends into the typical population. While behavioural evidence shows that differences in social cognitive tasks in typically developed (TD) adults are related to the levels of autistic-like traits, it remains unknown whether such a relation exists for the sensitivity to direct gaze.; Methods: In two experiments, we measured reaction times to detect the faces with direct and averted gaze, suppressed from awareness, i.e. the access to awareness. In experiment 1, we tested N = 19 clinically diagnosed adults with ASD and N = 22 TD matched controls, while in experiment 2, we tested an independent sample of N = 20 TD adults.; Results: In line with the literature, experiment 1 showed preferential processing of direct gaze in the TD group but not in the ASD group. Whole-brain event-related fMRI was applied during an affective Stroop task in 39 adolescents with CD and 39 typically developing adolescents (TD). Participants were presented with an emotional stimulus (negative/neutral) followed by a Stroop task with varying cognitive load (congruent/incongruent/blank trials). fMRI analysis included standard preprocessing, region of interest analyses (amygdala, insula, ventromedial prefrontal cortex) and whole-brain analyses based on a 2() × 2() × 3() full-factorial ANOVA. Adolescents with CD made significantly more errors, while reaction times did not significantly differ compared to TD. Additionally, we observed a lack of downregulation of left amygdala activity in response to incongruent trials and increased anterior insula activity for CD relative to TD during affective Stroop task processing [cluster-level family-wise error-corrected ( < 0.05)]. Even though no three-way interaction ( × × ) interaction was detected, the findings presented still provide evidence for altered neuronal underpinnings of the interaction of emotion processing and response inhibition in CD. Moreover, our results may corroborate previous evidence of emotion dysregulation as a core dysfunction in CD. Future studies shall focus on investigating the interaction of emotion processing and response inhibition in CD subgroups (e.g., variations in callous-unemotional traits, impulsivity, or anxiety).

A given pattern of optical stimulation can arise from countless possible real-world sources, creating a dilemma for vision: What in the world actually gives rise to the current pattern? This dilemma was pointed out centuries ago by the astronomer and mathematician Ibn Al-Haytham and was forcefully restated 150 years ago when von Helmholtz characterized perception as unconscious inference. To buttress his contention, von Helmholtz cited multistable perception: recurring changes in perception despite unchanging sensory input. Recent neuroscientific studies have exploited multistable perception to identify brain areas uniquely activated in association with these perceptual changes, but the specific roles of those activations remain controversial. This article provides an overview of theoretical models of multistable perception, a review of recent neuroimaging and brain stimulation studies focused on mechanisms associated with these perceptual changes, and a synthesis of available evidence within the context of current notions about Bayesian inference that find their historical roots in von Helmholtz's work.

The severity of these symptoms, however, is thought to lie on a continuum that extends into the typical population. While behavioural evidence shows that differences in social cognitive tasks in typically developed (TD) adults are related to the levels of autistic-like traits, it remains unknown whether such a relation exists for the sensitivity to direct gaze.; Methods: In two experiments, we measured reaction times to detect the faces with direct and averted gaze, suppressed from awareness, i.e. the access to awareness. In experiment 1, we tested N = 19 clinically diagnosed adults with ASD and N = 22 TD matched controls, while in experiment 2, we tested an independent sample of N = 20 TD adults.; Results: In line with the literature, experiment 1 showed preferential processing of direct gaze in the TD group but not in the ASD group. Importantly, we found a linear relationship in both experiments between the levels of autistic traits within the groups of TD participants and their sensitivity to direct gaze: with increasing autistic characteristics, there was a decrease in sensitivity to direct gaze.; Conclusion: These results provide the first evidence that differences in gaze processing and the sensitivity to direct gaze are already present in individuals with subclinical levels of autistic traits. Visual working memory (VWM) is used to maintain visual information available for subsequent goal-directed behavior. The content of VWM has been shown to affect the behavioral response to concurrent visual input, suggesting that visual representations originating from VWM and from sensory input draw upon a shared neural substrate (i.e., a sensory recruitment stance on VWM storage). Here, we hypothesized that visual information maintained in VWM would enhance the neural response to concurrent visual input that matches the content of VWM. To test this hypothesis, we measured fMRI BOLD responses to task irrelevant stimuli acquired from 15 human participants (three males) performing a concurrent delayed match-to-sample task. In this task, observers were sequentially presented with two shape stimuli, and a retro-cue, indicating which of the two shapes should be memorized for subsequent recognition. During the retention interval, a task-irrelevant shape (the probe) was briefly presented in the peripheral visual field, which could either match or mismatch the shape category of the memorized stimulus. We show that this probe stimulus elicited a stronger BOLD response, and allowed for increased shape-classification performance, when it matched rather than mismatched the concurrently memorized content, despite identical visual stimulation. Our results demonstrate that VWM enhances the neural response to concurrent visual input in a content-specific way. This finding is in line with a sensory recruitment stance on VWM storage, and it provides a common explanation for a plethora of behavioral studies in which VWM-matching visual input elicits a stronger behavioral and perceptual response.

Viewing of ambiguous stimuli can lead to bistable perception alternating between the possible percepts. During continuous presentation of ambiguous stimuli, percept changes occur as single events, whereas during intermittent presentation of ambiguous stimuli, percept changes occur at more or less regular intervals either as single events or bursts. Response patterns can be highly variable and have been reported to show systematic differences between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Existing models of bistable perception often use detailed assumptions and large parameter sets which make parameter estimation challenging. Here we propose a parsimonious stochastic model that provides a link between empirical data analysis of the observed response patterns and detailed models of underlying neuronal processes. Firstly, we use a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for the times between percept changes, which assumes one single state in continuous presentation and a stable and an unstable state in intermittent presentation. The HMM captures the observed differences between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls, but remains descriptive. Therefore, we secondly propose a hierarchical Brownian model (HBM), which produces similar response patterns but also provides a relation to potential underlying mechanisms. The main idea is that neuronal activity is described as an activity difference between two competing neuronal populations reflected in Brownian motions with drift. This differential activity generates switching between the two conflicting percepts and between stable and unstable states with similar mechanisms on different neuronal levels. With only a small number of parameters, the HBM can be fitted closely to a high variety of response patterns and captures group differences between healthy controls and patients with schizophrenia. Visual perception is strongly shaped by expectations, but it is poorly understood how such perceptual expectations are learned in our dynamic sensory environment. Here, we applied a Bayesian framework to investigate whether perceptual expectations are continuously updated from different aspects of ongoing experience. In two experiments, human observers performed an associative learning task in which rapidly changing expectations about the appearance of ambiguous stimuli were induced. We found that perception of ambiguous stimuli was biased by both learned associations and previous perceptual outcomes. Computational modeling revealed that perception was best explained by a model that continuously updated priors from associative learning and perceptual history and combined these priors with the current sensory information in a probabilistic manner. Our findings suggest that the construction of visual perception is a highly dynamic process that incorporates rapidly changing expectations from different sources in a manner consistent with Bayesian learning and inference.

When dissimilar stimuli are presented to the two eyes, only one stimulus dominates at a time while the other stimulus is invisible due to interocular suppression. When both stimuli are equally potent in competing for awareness, perception alternates spontaneously between the two stimuli, a phenomenon called binocular rivalry. However, when one stimulus is much stronger, e.g., due to higher contrast, the weaker stimulus can be suppressed for prolonged periods of time. A technique that has recently become very popular for the investigation of unconscious visual processing is continuous flash suppression (CFS): High-contrast dynamic patterns shown to one eye can render a low-contrast stimulus shown to the other eye invisible for up to minutes. Studies using CFS have produced new insights but also controversies regarding the types of visual information that can be processed unconsciously as well as the neural sites and the relevance of such unconscious processing. Here, we review the current state of knowledge in regard to neural processing of interocularly suppressed information. Focusing on recent neuroimaging findings, we discuss whether and to what degree such suppressed visual information is processed at early and more advanced levels of the visual processing hierarchy. We review controversial findings related to the influence of attention on early visual processing under interocular suppression, the putative differential roles of dorsal and ventral areas in unconscious object processing, and evidence suggesting privileged unconscious processing of emotional and other socially relevant information. On a more general note, we discuss methodological and conceptual issues, from practical issues of how unawareness of a stimulus is assessed to the overarching question of what constitutes an adequate operational definition of unawareness. Here we use functional magnetic resonance imaging and multivariate pattern analysis to identify decision-related brain regions and address a number of open issues in the field of perceptual decision-making. In the first study (Hebart et al., 2012), we demonstrated that perceptual decisions about motion direction are represented in both visual and parietal cortex, even when decoupled from motor plans. While in early visual cortex the amount of information about perceptual choices follows the amount of sensory evidence presented on the screen, the reverse pattern is observed in left posterior parietal cortex. These results reveal the brain regions involved when choices are encoded in an abstract format and suggest that these two brain regions are recruited differently depending on the amount of sensory evidence available. In the second study (Hebart et al., submitted), we show that the perceptual decision variable (DV) is represented throughout fronto-parietal association cortices. The DV in right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex covaries specifically with brain signals in the ventral striatum representing confidence, demonstrating a close link between the two variables. This suggests that confidence is calculated from the perceptual DV encoded in ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. In the third study (Christophel et al., 2012), using a visual short-term memory (VSTM) task, we demonstrate that the content of VSTM is represented in visual cortex and posterior parietal cortex, but not prefrontal cortex. These results constrain theories of VSTM and suggest that the memorized content is stored in regions shown to represent perceptual decisions. Together, these results shed light on the neuronal code underlying perceptual decision-making in humans and offer the prospect for a more complete understanding of these processes.

Bis heute ist strittig, wo die Repräsentation einer solchen Karte im Gehirn lokalisiert sein könnte. Im Rahmen dieser Dissertation wurden drei Experimente durchgeführt, die verschiedene Aspekte von bottom-up Salienz-Verarbeitung mit Hilfe der funktionellen Magnetresonanztomographie untersuchten. However, to date it is still unclear where such a representation is located in the brain. This dissertation describes three experiments that investigated different aspects of bottom-up saliency processing in the human brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Neural responses to different salient stimuli presented in the periphery were investigated while top-down attention was directed to the central fixation point. The first two experiments investigated the neural responses to orientation contrast and to luminance contrast. The results indicate that saliency is potentially encoded in a distributed fashion in the visual system and that a feature-independent saliency map is calculated late in the processing hierarchy. The third experiment used natural scenes as stimuli. Consistent with the results of the other two experiments, graded saliency was identified in striate and extrastriate visual cortex, in particular in posterior intraparietal sulcus (pIPS), potentially reflecting a representation of feature-independent saliency. Additionally information about the most salient positions could be decoded in more anterior brain regions, namely in anterior intraparietal sulcus (aIPS) and frontal eye fields (FEF). Taken together, the results suggest a distributed saliency processing of different low-level features in striate and extrastriate cortex that is potentially integrated to a feature-independent saliency representation in pIPS. Shifts of attention to the most salient positions are then prepared in aIPS and FEF. As participants were engaged in a fixation task, the saliency is presumably processed in an automatic manner.

Wir untersuchten die Verarbeitung sozial relevanter visueller Reize während “continuous flash suppression” (CFS), einer besonders wirkungsvollen Technik der interokularen Unterdrückung, die benutzt wird um Reize unsichtbar zu machen. In den Studien 1–6 maßen wir die Dauer der perzeptuellen Unterdrückung während CFS um zu testen, ob sozial relevante Reize bevorzugten Zugang zum visuellen Bewusstsein haben. Studie 1 zeigte, dass die Detektion von Gesichtern bei Erwachsenen durch Gesichtsmerkmale beeinflusst wird, welche auch Blickpräferenzen von Neugeborenen beeinflussen. Studie 2 zeigte, dass Gesichtsdetektion durch die Ethnie und Altersgruppe des zu detektierenden Gesichtes beeinflusst wird. In Studie 3 fanden wir größere Effekte der Inversion auf die Detektion von menschlichen Gesichtern und Körpern als auf andere vertraute Objekte. Studie 9 zeigte, dass nur größenabhängige Komponenten von Blickrichtungen unbewusst repräsentiert werden können, während objektzentrierte Repräsentationen von Blickrichtungen visuelles Bewusstsein benötigen., We studied the processing of socially relevant visual stimuli during continuous flash suppression (CFS), a potent interocular suppression technique that we used to render stimuli invisible. In Studies 1–6, we measured the duration of perceptual suppression during CFS to test whether socially relevant stimuli have privileged access to visual awareness. Study 1 demonstrated that face detection in adult observers is modulated by facial properties previously shown to modulate looking preferences in newborns. Study 2 revealed own-race and own-age biases in face detection, indicating that visual awareness of faces is shaped by visual experience with one’s own social group. In Study 3, we found larger effects of stimulus inversion on the detection of human faces and bodies than for other familiar objects, suggesting that detection mechanisms are preferentially tuned to conspecifics. Study 4 showed that faces with direct gaze are detected more quickly than faces with averted gaze. Study 5 revealed a confounding factor in schematic emotional faces that are considered to be well-controlled visual stimuli. In Study 6, we found that faster detection of fearful compared to neutral faces relies on high spatial frequencies, arguing against a functional role of a subcortical pathway to the amygdala. Study 7 showed that measures of visual detection during CFS cannot provide unequivocal evidence for unconscious processing under CFS. In Studies 8 and 9 we therefore measured adaptation aftereffects from stimuli rendered permanently invisible by CFS. In Study 8, we measured face shape aftereffects and found that only low-level monocular components of face shape adaptation can proceed unconsciously, whereas higher-level components depend on visual awareness. Study 9 revealed that only size-dependent low-level components of eye gaze can be represented unconsciously, while object-centered higher-level representations of eye gaze directions require visual awareness.

Disruptive behaviour disorders are reflected by a great variety of symptoms ranging from impulsive-hot tempered quarrels to purposeful and goal directed acts of cruelty. A growing body of data indicates that there are neurobiological factors that increase the risk for developing disruptive behaviour disorders. In this review, we give a broad overview of recent studies investigating physiological, neural, genetic factors, and specific neurotransmitter systems. We also discuss the impact of psychosocial risk and consider the effects of gene-environment interactions. Due to the heterogeneity of disruptive behaviour disorders, it is concluded that specific subtypes of disruptive behaviour should be considered both in terms their biological basis and in regard to specific treatment needs.

In recent years, a number of functional and structural neuroimaging studies have investigated the neural bases of aggressive and violent behaviour in children and adolescents. Most functional neuroimaging studies have persued the hypothesis that pathological aggression is a consequence of deficits in the neural circuits involved in emotion processing. There is converging evidence for abnormal neural responses to emotional stimuli in youths with a propensity towards aggressive behaviour. In addition, recent neuroimaging work has suggested that aggressive behaviour is also associated with abnormalities in neural processes that subserve both the inhibitory control of behaviour and the flexible adaptation of behaviour in accord with reinforcement information. Structural neuroimaging studies in children and adolescents with conduct problems are still scarce, but point to deficits in brain structures involved in the processing of social information and in the regulation of social and goal-directed behaviour. The indisputable progress that this research field has made in recent years notwithstanding, the overall picture is still rather patchy and there are inconsistencies between studies that await clarification. Despite this, we attempt to provide an integrated view on the neural abnormalities that may contribute to various forms of juvenile aggression and violence, and discuss research strategies that may help to provide a more profound understanding of these important issues in the future.
