Abstract

The European Red List is a review of the status of European species according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level — in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This publication is a summary of the conservation status of the European species of mosses, liverworts and hornworts, collectively known as bryophytes. It provides the first comprehensive, region-wide assessment of bryophytes and it identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at a European level, so that appropriate policy measures and conservation actions, based on the best available evidence, can be taken to improve their status. The geographical scope is continentwide, extending from Iceland in the west to the Urals in the east, and from Franz Josef Land in the north to the Canary Islands in the south. The Caucasus region is not included.

Abstract

Five species of mosses (Bryophyta: Oncophorus demetrii, Oncophorus integerrimus, Oxyrrhynchium speciosum, Sphagnum divinum and Sphagnum medium) and one of liverworts (Marchantiophyta: Kurzia trichoclados) are presented as new for Finland. Seligeria calcarea and Seligeria pusilla, previously thought to be regionally extinct from Finland, are reported to being found again. New records in biogeographical provinces for 74 species of mosses and 36 species of liverworts are listed. Finally, 17 occurrences in provinces are removed due to misidentifications or missing specimens.

Abstract

The Nordic Bryological Society had its annual meeting and excursion on 21 to 24 of August 2014 in Kuusamo, Koillismaa biogeographical province (Ks) in northeast Finland close to Russian border. In total 23 participants attended the extremely rainy excursion. Despite the weather we made nice discoveries of Red Listed species typical for Kuusamo area e.g. Arnellia fennica, Campylophyllum halleri, Conocephalum salebrosum, Palustriella commutata and Philonotis calcarea. Lophozia pellucida was discovered new to Finland from Vasajängänoja. Encalypta alpina and Riccardia incurvata were collected for the first time from Ks. Total of 47 nationally Red Listed and seven regionally threatened species were recorded during the excursion.

4. Cervical cancer screening in Mediterranean countries: Implications for the future

Abstract

Prompted by feedback from the 34th European Congress of Cytology (ECC), the practice of including a special symposium in the programme was continued in the 35th ECC in Lisbon (2009) by arranging a satellite symposium entitled 'Cervical Cancer Screening in the Mediterranean Countries'. Because of the importance to the future of this discipline, it was felt appropriate to summarize the highlights of this symposium here. Cervical cancer prevention strategies in the countries participating in the symposium (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Turkey) appear to be highly variable. As yet, none of these countries can demonstrate a fully implemented national screening programme, but all are in different phases of designing and/or setting up such a programme, which is important. At present, the time-honoured concept of cervical cancer prevention by Pap smear screening is under review, because prophylactic human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines demonstrate a potential to prevent the vast majority (albeit not all) of cases of cervical cancer in the foreseeable future. Cervical cancer screening is still needed in this emerging era of HPV vaccination, but clearly the existing screening strategies must be modified to provide a cost-effective combination of vaccination and screening. If the currently evaluated new screening strategies, such as HPV testing followed by cytology triage, become a reality, there is the likelihood that the Pap test will have only a secondary role, subordinate to HPV testing. Supporters of this scenario claim that Pap test performance will deteriorate in vaccinated populations. Reduced positive predictive value (PPV), due to lower disease prevalence, is inevitable, however, and this would also affect HPV tests. Any decline in sensitivity and specificity depends on human performance, and as such is avoidable by taking appropriate preventive measures. As clinical cytologists, we should focus attention on minimizing the risk to the Pap test

6. Sandwich hybridization in solution : a rapid method to screen HPV 16 DNA in cervical scrapes

Abstract

A solution hybridization method is introduced as a rapid diagnostic method for demonstration of papillomavirus DNA in cervical scrapes. 32P-Labelled detector probe and the biotinylated capture probes were hybridized with DNA of the specimen after pretreatment by boiling in alkaline SDS. After 4 h of hybridization the hybrids were collected onto avidin coated beads and measured. The sensitivity of the method was 1–5 × 105 HPV 16 DNA molecules. Cervical carcinoma cell lines CaSki and SiHa were informative as to the sensitivity of the solution hybridization and the in situ hybridization methods. CaSki cells containing about 700 HPV 16 DNA copies per cell were positive by both methods. SiHa cells with one HPV 16 DNA copy per cell were positive by the sandwich assay but remained negative in the in situ test. A series of 126 cervical scrapes collected from consecutive patients participating in a follow-up study for cervical HPV infection were tested for HPV 16 DNA by both methods. The detection rate of the sandwich test was 19/126 (15%) and that of the in situ method 21/126 (17%) yielding 26 diagnoses altogether. Twelve of these were obtained by one method only. The results obtained by studying the cervical cell lines and repeated specimens taken from constantly HPV 16 positive patients suggested that the two methods can measure different types of infections and thus complement each other in the diagnosis of cervical HPV infections.
