This study investigated the aggregate effects of air pollution on multimodal traffic volumes by comparing associations of the daily air quality index with pedestrian and automobile traffic volumes (collected at many different locations) and system-wide bus/rail ridership over a two-year period in two regions of Utah, United States. We used multilevel modeling to measure how these relationships differ by mode and across locations, while controlling for weather and investigating built/social environmental characteristics. Overall, we found strong evidence that pedestrian volumes declined by 10% or more, on average, on days where the air quality was “unhealthy for sensitive groups” (orange). There was some evidence that automobile traffic volumes increased on poor air quality days, especially on the way to mountainous recreation areas surrounding urban valleys. Decreases in bus/rail ridership were not statistically significant. Overall, there was more evidence for “risk averse” reactions than for “altruistic” travel behavior changes, suggesting that newer or stronger policies may be needed in order to reduce driving and encourage more sustainable and healthful travel behavior changes in regions when faced with periods of area-wide poor air quality.

However, data collection and analysis take time, which is a drawback of traffic count. Therefore, this study focuses on developing a peak-hour traffic volume prediction model based on short-term traffic counts. This study was conducted at seven arterial roads in Putrajaya. The traffic counts survey was conducted for 3 hours during peak times in the morning and evening. Besides, the vehicles were divided according to their classes during the traffic count process. Statistical regression analysis, including Single Linear Regression and Multiple Linear Regression, was used to develop the prediction models. A series of analyses were conducted to create an optimal model for predicting traffic volume during peak hours. After developing the model, validation against manual traffic counts was performed using Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) to assess the model's accuracy. If the percentage error is low, the model can anticipate peak hour volumes based on short-term data. In conclusion, the analysis of the result shows that the peak hour road traffic volume prediction model based on a 15-minute short-term traffic count using MLR analysis is the best model to use to predict traffic volume in Putrajaya. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the model has 12.09% MAPE, which suggests it closely follows actual traffic volume data.

The advantages of mobile sensing combined with the ubiquity of smartphones with internet of things (IoT) connectivity have motivated researchers to consider smartphones carried within vehicles as large-scale sensor networks that can contribute to the health assessment of structures. A practical implementation of mobile sensors has several challenges. Most notably, the signals collected within a vehicle's cabin is contaminated by the vehicle suspension dynamics and the road profile; therefore, the efficient extraction of bridge vibration from signals collected within the vehicle is of great importance. The majority of available approaches for addressing this are typically system specific and restricted by assumptions of linearity. This limits the scope of application since vehicles mostly act nonlinearly depending on their manufacturing specifications. In addition, the variety of vehicle systems and road conditions complicates the exploration for a unified method for this task. This project proposes deep learning frameworks with domain adaptability that enable vehicle signal decontamination in a more reliable and practical manner. This framework will transform vehicles into robust and high-quality vibration sensors for infrastructure monitoring. Furthermore, this will render smartphone-based vehicle sensing data a valuable source of information that will enable crowdsourcing and facilitate infrastructure condition assessment in real time at an unprecedented scale, rate and resolution.

Road verges can support high densities of flowers and could therefore provide new opportunities for the conservation of flower-visiting insects. One way of optimizing road verges for vascular plant diversity is to adjust mowing regimes, but to date it is unclear how this affects flower-visiting insects. Furthermore, for mobile organisms like wild bees and butterflies, there is a risk that the benefit of increased habitat quality in road verges is limited by the proximity to traffic, but this is poorly studied. In a crossed study design, we separated mowing time and frequency (early summer and autumn, or only late summer) from road verge habitat classification (valuable for biodiversity according to transport authority, or regular). We did so along a gradient of traffic intensity, to investigate if a mowing regime designed to enhance plant diversity can also benefit wild bees and butterflies, and if traffic limits the conservation potential of road verges. Road verges that were mown only in late summer had higher flower densities, and there was a positive relationship between flower density and wild bee abundance and species richness. Butterfly abundance and species richness only benefitted from a late summer mowing in valuable but not in regular road verges. Traffic intensity had a substantial negative impact on abundance and species richness of wild bees and butterflies. Higher traffic intensities limited the positive relationship between plant and butterfly species richness that we observed at lower traffic intensities. Increasing width of the road verges buffered negative effects of the traffic on wild bee as well as butterfly abundances, and on wild bee species richness. Synthesis and applications. Road verges can play a valuable role for the conservation of wild bees and butterflies, but there is a need to consider both traffic intensity and resource availability when implementing management strategies.
