The Local Volume Complete Cluster Survey (LoVoCCS) is an on-going program to observe nearly a hundred low-redshift X-ray-luminous galaxy clusters (redshifts $0.0310^{44}$ erg/s) with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), capturing data in $u,g,r,i,z$ bands with a $5\sigma$ point source depth of approximately 25-26th AB magnitudes. Here, we map the aperture masses in 58 galaxy cluster fields using weak gravitational lensing. These clusters span a variety of dynamical states, from nearly relaxed to merging systems, and approximately half of them have not been subject to detailed weak lensing analysis before. In each cluster field, we analyze the alignment between the 2D mass distribution described by the aperture mass map, the 2D red-sequence (RS) galaxy distribution, and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). We find that the orientations of the BCG and the RS distribution are strongly aligned throughout the interiors of the clusters: the median misalignment angle is 19 deg within 2 Mpc. We also observe the alignment between the orientations of the RS distribution and the overall cluster mass distribution (by a median difference of 32 deg within 1 Mpc), although this is constrained by galaxy shape noise and the limitations of our cluster sample size. The HST treasury program BUFFALO provides extended wide-field imaging of the six Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy clusters. Here we present the combined strong and weak-lensing analysis of Abell 370, a massive cluster at z=0.375. From the reconstructed total projected mass distribution in the 6arcmin x 6arcmin BUFFALO field-of-view, we obtain the distribution of massive substructures outside the cluster core and report the presence of a total of seven candidates, each with mass $\sim 5 \times 10^{13}M_{\odot}$. Combining the total mass distribution derived from lensing with multi-wavelength data, we evaluate the physical significance of each candidate substructure, and conclude that 5 out of the 7 substructure candidates seem reliable, and that the mass distribution in Abell 370 is extended along the North-West and South-East directions. While this finding is in general agreement with previous studies, our detailed spatial reconstruction provides new insights into the complex mass distribution at large cluster-centric radius. We explore the impact of the extended mass reconstruction on the model of the cluster core and in particular, we attempt to physically explain the presence of an important external shear component, necessary to obtain a low root-mean-square separation between the model-predicted and observed positions of the multiple images in the cluster core. The substructures can only account for up to half the amplitude of the external shear, suggesting that more effort is needed to fully replace it by more physically motivated mass components. Galaxy clusters are the products of structure formation through myriad physical processes that affect their growth and evolution throughout cosmic history. As a result, the matter distribution within galaxy clusters, or their shape, is influenced by cosmology and astrophysical processes, in particular the accretion of new material due to gravity. We introduce an analysis method to investigate the 3D triaxial shapes of galaxy clusters from the Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton -- Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE). In this work, the first paper of a CHEX-MATE triaxial analysis series, we focus on utilizing X-ray data from XMM and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect maps from Planck and ACT to obtain a three dimensional triaxial description of the intracluster medium (ICM) gas. We present the forward modeling formalism of our technique, which projects a triaxial ellipsoidal model for the gas density and pressure to compare directly with the observed two dimensional distributions in X-rays and the SZ effect. A Markov chain Monte Carlo is used to estimate the posterior distributions of the model parameters. Using mock X-ray and SZ observations of a smooth model, we demonstrate that the method can reliably recover the true parameter values. In addition, we apply the analysis to reconstruct the gas shape from the observed data of one CHEX-MATE galaxy cluster, Abell 1689, to illustrate the technique. The inferred parameters are in agreement with previous analyses for that cluster, and our results indicate that the geometrical properties, including the axial ratios of the ICM distribution, are constrained to within a few percent. With much better precision than previous studies, we thus further establish that Abell 1689 is significantly elongated along the line of sight, resulting in its exceptional gravitational lensing properties., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We present a statistical study of 180 dust continuum sources identified in 33 massive cluster fields by the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS) over a total of 133 arcmin$^{2}$ area, homogeneously observed at 1.2 mm. ALCS enables us to detect extremely faint mm sources by lensing magnification, including near-infrared (NIR) dark objects showing no counterparts in existing {\it Hubble Space Telescope} and {\it Spitzer} images. The dust continuum sources belong to a blind sample ($N=141$) with S/N $\gtrsim$ 5.0 (a purity of $>$ 0.99) or a secondary sample ($N=39$) with S/N= $4.0-5.0$ screened by priors. With the blind sample, we securely derive 1.2-mm number counts down to $\sim7$ $\mu$Jy, and find that the total integrated 1.2mm flux is 20.7$^{+8.5}_{-6.5}$ Jy deg$^{-2}$, resolving $\simeq$ 80 % of the cosmic infrared background light. The resolved fraction varies by a factor of $0.6-1.1$ due to the completeness correction depending on the spatial size of the mm emission. We also derive infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) at $z=0.6-7.5$ with the $1/V_{\rm max}$ method, finding the redshift evolution of IR LFs characterized by positive luminosity and negative density evolution. The total (=UV+IR) cosmic star-formation rate density (SFRD) at $z>4$ is estimated to be $161^{+25}_{-21}$ % of the established measurements, which were almost exclusively based on optical$-$NIR surveys. Although our general understanding of the cosmic SFRD is unlikely to change beyond a factor of 2, these results add to the weight of evidence for an additional ($\approx 60$ %) SFRD component contributed by the faint-mm population, including NIR dark objects., Comment: Submitted to ApJS, 34 pages, 8 Tables, and 18 Figures (+38 pages, 5 Tables, and 6 Figures in Appendix)

Backsplash galaxies are those that traverse and overshoot cluster cores as they fall into these structures. They are affected by environment, and should stand out in contrast to the infalling population. We target galaxies in the vicinity of clusters (R>R200) and select a sample in projected phase space (PPS), from the compilation of Sampaio et al. based on SDSS data. We present a statistical analysis, comparing two regions in PPS, with the same projected distance to the cluster but different velocity. The analysis relies on the presence of variations in the stellar population content of backsplash galaxies. We find a lower limit in the fractional contribution of ~5% with respect to the general sample of infalling galaxies at similar group-centric distance when using single line strength analysis, or ~15-30% when adopting bivariate distributions. The stellar populations show a subtle but significant difference towards older ages, and a higher fraction of quiescent galaxies. We also compare this set with a general field sample, where a substantially larger difference in galaxy properties is found, with the field sample being consistently younger, metal poorer and with a lower fraction of quiescent galaxies. Noting that our "cluster" sample is located outside of the virial radius, we expect this difference to be caused by pre-processing of the infalling galaxies in the overall higher density regions., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed weak-lensing and X-ray study of the Frontier Fields galaxy cluster Abell 370, one of the most massive known lenses on the sky, using wide-field BRz Subaru/Sprime-Cam and Chandra X-ray observations. By combining 2D shear and azimuthally averaged magnification constraints derived from Subaru data, we perform a lensing mass reconstruction in a free-form manner, which allows us to determine both radial structure and 2D morphology of the cluster mass distribution. In a triaxial framework assuming an NFW density profile, we constrain the intrinsic structure and geometry of the cluster halo by forward modeling the reconstructed mass map. We obtain a halo mass $M_{200}=(1.54 \pm 0.29)\times 10^{15}h^{-1}M_\odot$, a halo concentration $c_{200}=5.27 \pm 1.28$, and a minor-major axis ratio $q_a=0.62 \pm 0.23$ with uninformative priors. Using a prior on the line-of-sight alignment of the halo major axis derived from binary merger simulations constrained by multi-probe observations, we find that the data favor a more prolate geometry with lower mass and lower concentration. From triaxial lens modeling with the line-of-sight prior, we find a spherically enclosed gas mass fraction of $f_\mathrm{gas}=(8.4 \pm 1.0)\%$ at $0.7h^{-1}$ Mpc. When compared to the hydrostatic mass estimate from Chandra observations, our triaxial weak-lensing analysis yields spherically enclosed mass ratios of $1-b=0.56 \pm 0.09$ and $0.51 \pm 0.09$ at $0.7h^{-1}$ Mpc with and without using the line-of-sight prior, respectively. Since the cluster is in a highly disturbed dynamical state, this represents the likely maximum level of hydrostatic bias in galaxy clusters. We utilize the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Wide Survey to explore the properties of galaxies located in the voids identified from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) up to z~0.7. The HSC reaches i~25, allowing us to characterize the void galaxies down to 10$^{9.2}$ solar mass. We find that the revised void galaxy densities, when including faint galaxies in voids defined by bright galaxies, are still underdense compared to the mean density from the entire field. In addition, we classify galaxies into star-forming, quiescent, and green valley populations, and find that void galaxies tend to have slightly higher fractions of star-forming galaxies under the mass and redshift control, although the significance of this result is only moderate (2$\sigma$). However, when we focus on the star-forming population, the distribution of the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of void galaxies shows little difference from that of the control galaxies. Similarly, the median sSFR of star-forming void galaxies is also in good agreement with that of the star-forming control galaxies. Moreover, the effective green valley fraction of void galaxies, defined as the number of green valley galaxies over the number of nonquiescent galaxies, is comparable to that of the control ones, supporting the suggestion that void and control galaxies evolve under similar physical processes and quenching frequencies. Extended theories of gravity have been extensively investigated during the last thirty years, aiming at fixing infrared and ultraviolet shortcomings of General Relativity and of the associated $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model. Recently, non-local theories of gravity have drawn increasing attention due to their potential to ameliorate both the ultraviolet and infrared behavior of gravitational interaction. In particular, Integral Kernel theories of Gravity provide a viable mechanism to explain the late time cosmic acceleration so as to avoid the introduction of any form of unknown dark energy. On the other hand, these models represent a natural link towards quantum gravity. Here, we study a scalar-tensor equivalent model of General Relativity corrected with non-local terms, where corrections are selected by the existence of Noether symmetries. After performing the weak field limit and generalizing the results to extended mass distributions, we analyse the non-local model at galaxy cluster scales, by comparing the theoretical predictions with gravitational lensing observations from the CLASH program. We obtain agreement with data at the same level of statistical significance as General Relativity. We also provide constraints for the Navarro--Frenk--White parameters and lower bounds for the non-local length scales. The Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Strategic Survey is the latest-generation multi-band optical imaging survey for galaxy evolution and structure formation. The "Ultra-Deep" component of the HSC survey provides $grizy$ broad-band images over $\sim3.4$ deg$^2$ to detection limits of $\sim26$-28 AB, along with narrow-band images, in the COSMOS and the SXDS fields. These images provide an unprecedented combination of depths and area coverage, for the studies galaxies up to $z\sim7$. However, the lack of coverage at $<4000$ Ang implies incomplete sampling of the rest-frame UV at $z\lesssim 3$, which is critically needed for understanding the buildup of stellar mass in the later cosmic time. We conducted a multi-year CFHT $u^\ast$-band imaging campaign in the two HSC Ultra-Deep fields with CFHT MegaCam. By including shallower archival data, we reach 5-$\sigma$ depths of $u^\ast=28.1$ and 28.4 (AB) at the centers of the COSMOS and SXDS fields, respectively, and $u^\ast=27.7$ and 27.8 in the central 1 deg$^2$ fields. The image quality is $\gtrsim0.90$ arcsec, fairly good for the $u^\ast$ band. Both the photometric and astrometric quality of our data are excellent. We show that the combination of our $u^\ast$-band and HSC data can lead to high-quality photometric redshifts at $z=0$-3, and robust measurements of rest-frame UV on galaxies at $0.4

We use high-precision combined strong/weak lensing and kinematics measurements of the total mass profiles of the observed galaxy clusters MACS~J1206.2-0847 and Abell~S1063, to constrain the relativistic sector of the general DHOST dark energy theories, which exhibit a partial breaking of the so called Vainsthein screening mechanism, on the linear level of scalar fluctuations around a cosmological background. In particular, by using the \textsc{MG-MAMMPOSSt} framework developed in Pizzuti et al. 2021, for the kinematics analysis of member galaxies in clusters along with lensing mass profile reconstructions, we provide new constraints on the coupling $Y_2$ which governs the theory's relativistic contribution to the lensing potential. The new bound from the combination of kinematics and lensing measurements of MACS 1206, $Y_2=-0.12^{+0.66}_{-0.67}$ at $2\sigma$, provides about a 2-fold improvement on previous constraints. In the case of Abell~S1063 a $>2\sigma$ tension with the GR expectation arises. We discuss this in some detail, and we investigate the possible sources of systematics which can explain the tension. We further discuss why the combination of kinematics of member galaxies with lensing is capable of providing much tighter bounds compared to kinematics or lensing alone, and we explain how the number density profile of tracers, as well as the choice of the velocity anisotropy profile affects the final results., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. We present our determination of the baryon budget for an X-ray-selected XXL sample of 136 galaxy groups and clusters spanning nearly two orders of magnitude in mass ($M_{500}\sim 10^{13}-10^{15}M_\odot$) and the redshift range $0< z < 1$. Our joint analysis is based on the combination of HSC-SSP weak-lensing mass measurements, XXL X-ray gas mass measurements, and HSC and SDSS multiband photometry. We carry out a Bayesian analysis of multivariate mass-scaling relations of gas mass, galaxy stellar mass, stellar mass of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), and soft-band X-ray luminosity, by taking into account the intrinsic covariance between cluster properties, selection effect, weak-lensing mass calibration, and observational error covariance matrix. The mass-dependent slope of the gas mass--total mass ($M_{500}$) relation is found to be $1.29_{-0.10}^{+0.16}$, which is steeper than the self-similar prediction of unity, whereas the slope of the stellar mass--total mass relation is shallower than unity, $0.85_{-0.09}^{+0.12}$. The BCG stellar mass weakly depends on cluster mass with a slope of $0.49_{-0.10}^{+0.11}$. The baryon, gas mass, and stellar mass fractions as a function of $M_{500}$ agree with the results from numerical simulations and previous observations. We successfully constrain the full intrinsic covariance of the baryonic contents. The BCG stellar mass shows the larger intrinsic scatter at a given halo total mass, followed in order by stellar mass and gas mass. We find a significant positive intrinsic correlation coefficient between total (and satellite) stellar mass and BCG stellar mass and no evidence for intrinsic correlation between gas mass and stellar mass. Extended Theories of Gravity with additional scalar degrees of freedom have recently acquired increasing interest due to the presence of a screening mechanism that allows suppressing at small scales (e.g., the Solar System scale) every modification restoring General Relativity. In this work, we consider a second-order Extended Theory of Gravity belonging to the family of Degenerate High Order Scalar Tensor theories (DHOST) characterized by a partial breaking of the Vainshtein screening mechanism. We study this model in two different scenarios as a description of dark energy only and as a description of both dark matter and dark energy. Such scenarios have been tested here by analysing a sample of 16 high-mass galaxy clusters targeted by the Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) program using two complementary probes, namely X-ray and strong-and-weak gravitational lensing observations. In mass modelling, we adopt a multi-component approach including hot gas and galactic stellar contributions. For the majority of the clusters in our sample, results show mild Bayesian evidence in favour of the DHOST model as a description of dark energy over General Relativity. This model also appears to alleviate the discrepancy present in General Relativity between X-ray hydrostatic and lensing mass estimates. For the second scenario where gravity acts as both dark energy and dark matter due to the partial breaking of the Vainshtein screening mechanism at cluster scales, the model is statistically disfavoured compared to General Relativity., Comment: 20 pages, 2 tables, 6 figures. We present the forward cosmological analysis of an $XMM$ selected sample of galaxy clusters out to a redshift of unity. Following our previous 2018 study based on the dn/dz quantity alone, we perform an upgraded cosmological analysis of the same XXL C1 cluster catalogue (178 objects), with a detailed account of the systematic errors. We follow the ASpiX methodology: the distribution of the observed X-ray properties of the cluster population is analysed in a 3D observable space (count rate, hardness ratio, redshift) and modelled as a function of cosmology. Compared to more traditional methods, ASpiX allows the inclusion of clusters down to a few tens of photons. We obtain an improvement by a factor of 2 compared to the previous analysis by letting the normalisation of the M-T relation and the evolution of the L-T relation free. Adding constraints from the XXL cluster 2-point correlation function and the BAO from various surveys decreases the uncertainties by 23 and 53 % respectively, and 62% when adding both. Switching to the scaling relations from the Subaru analysis, and letting free more parameters, our final constraints are $\sigma_8$ = $0.99^{+0.14}_{-0.23}$, $\Omega_m$ = 0.296 $\pm$ 0.034 ($S_8 = 0.98^{+0.11}_{-0.21}$) for the XXL sample alone. Finally, we combine XXL ASpiX, the XXL cluster 2-point correlation function and the BAO, with 11 free parameters, allowing for the cosmological dependence of the scaling relations in the fit. We find $\sigma_8$ = $0.793^{+0.063}_{-0.12}$, $\Omega_m$ = 0.364 $\pm$ 0.015 ($S_8 = 0.872^{+0.068}_{-0.12}$), but still compatible with Planck CMB at 2.2$\sigma$. The results obtained by the ASpiX method are promising; further improvement is expected from the final XXL cosmological analysis involving a cluster sample twice as large. Likelihood-free inference provides a rigorous approach to preform Bayesian analysis using forward simulations only. The main advantage of likelihood-free methods is its ability to account for complex physical processes and observational effects in forward simulations. Here we explore the potential of likelihood-free forward modeling for Bayesian cosmological inference using the redshift evolution of the cluster abundance combined with weak-lensing mass calibration. We use two complementary likelihood-free methods, namely Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) and Density-Estimation Likelihood-Free Inference (DELFI), to develop an analysis procedure for inference of the cosmological parameters $(\Omega_\mathrm{m},\sigma_8)$ and the mass scale of the survey sample. Adopting an eROSITA-like selection function and a 10-percent scatter in the observable-mass relation in a flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology with $\Omega_\mathrm{m}=0.286$ and $\sigma_8=0.82$, we create a synthetic catalog of observable-selected NFW clusters in a survey area of 50 deg$^2$. The stacked tangential shear profile and the number counts in redshift bins are used as summary statistics for both methods. By performing a series of forward simulations, we obtain convergent solutions for the posterior distribution from both methods. We find that ABC recovers broader posteriors than DELFI, especially for the $\Omega_\mathrm{m}$ parameter. For a weak-lensing survey with a source density of $n_\mathrm{g}=20$ arcmin$^{-2}$, we obtain posterior constraints on $S_8=\sigma_8(\Omega_\mathrm{m}/0.3)^{0.3}$ of $0.836 \pm 0.032$ and $0.810 \pm 0.019$ from ABC and DELFI, respectively. SkyPy is an open-source Python package for simulating the astrophysical sky. It comprises a library of physical and empirical models across a range of observables and a command-line script to run end-to-end simulations. The library provides functions that sample realisations of sources and their associated properties from probability distributions. Simulation pipelines are constructed from these models using a YAML-based configuration syntax, while task scheduling and data dependencies are handled internally and the modular design allows users to interface with external software. SkyPy is developed and maintained by a diverse community of domain experts with a focus on software sustainability and interoperability. By fostering development, it provides a framework for correlated simulations of a range of cosmological probes including galaxy populations, large scale structure, the cosmic microwave background, supernovae and gravitational waves. Version 0.4 implements functions that model various properties of galaxies including luminosity functions, redshift distributions and optical photometry from spectral energy distribution templates. We perform a systematic study of the recently discovered fundamental plane of galaxy clusters (CFP) using ~250 simulated clusters from The Three Hundred project, focusing on the stability of the plane against different temperature definitions and its dependence on the dynamical relaxation state of clusters. The CFP is characterised by $T\propto M_\mathrm{s}^\alpha\,r_\mathrm{s}^\beta$, defined with the gas temperature ($T$) and the characteristic halo scale radius and mass ($r_\mathrm{s}$ and $M_\mathrm{s}$) assuming a Navarro-Frenk-White halo description. We explore two definitions of weighted temperatures, namely mass-weighted and spectroscopic-like temperatures, in three radial ranges. The Three Hundred project clusters at $z=0$ lie on a thin plane whose parameters ($\alpha,\beta$) and dispersion ($0.015-0.030$ dex) depend on the gas temperature definition. The CFP for mass-weighted temperatures is closer to the virial equilibrium expectation ($\alpha=1,\beta=-1$) with a smaller dispersion. For gas temperatures measured within $500h^{-1}$ kpc, the resulting CFP deviates the most from the virial expectation and shifts towards the similarity solution for a secondary infall model ($\alpha=1.5,\beta=-2$). Independently of the temperature definition, we find that clusters at $z=1$ and relaxed clusters form a CFP similar to the virial expectation, unlike disturbed clusters exhibiting stronger evolution. Only systems formed over the last 4 Gyr present a CFP that is closer to the similarity solution. All these findings are compatible with the CFP obtained for a CLASH subsample excluding the hottest clusters with $T_\mathrm{X}>12$ keV., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 9 tables. We present the first weak-lensing mass calibration and X-ray scaling relations of galaxy clusters and groups selected in the $eROSITA$ Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) observed by Spectrum Roentgen Gamma/$eROSITA$ over a contiguous footprint with an area of $\approx140$ deg$^2$, using the three-year (S19A) weak-lensing data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. In this work, a sample of $434$ optically confirmed galaxy clusters (and groups) at redshift $0.01\lesssim z \lesssim1.3$ with a median of $0.35$ is studied, of which $313$ systems are uniformly covered by the HSC survey to enable the extraction of the weak-lensing shear observable. In a Bayesian population modelling, we perform a blind analysis for the weak-lensing mass calibration by simultaneously modelling the observed count rate $\eta$ and the shear profile $g$ of individual clusters through the count rate-to-mass-and-redshift ($\eta$--$M_{500}$--$z$) and weak-lensing mass-to-mass-and-redshift ($M_{\mathrm{WL}}$--$M_{500}$--$z$) relations, respectively, while accounting for the bias in these observables using simulation-based calibrations. As a result, the count rate-inferred and lensing-calibrated cluster mass is obtained from the joint modelling of the scaling relations, as the ensemble mass spanning a range of $10^{13}h^{-1}M_{\odot}\lesssim M_{500}\lesssim10^{15} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ with a median of $\approx10^{14} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ for the eFEDS sample. With the mass calibration, we further model the X-ray observable-to-mass-and-redshift relations, including the rest-frame soft-band and bolometric luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{X}}$ and $L_{\mathrm{b}}$), the emission-weighted temperature $T_{\mathrm{X}}$, the mass of intra-cluster medium $M_{\mathrm{g}}$, and the mass proxy $Y_{\mathrm{X}}$, which is the product of $T_{\mathrm{X}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{g}}$. We present an ensemble X-ray analysis of systematic perturbations in the central hot gas properties for a sample of 28 nearby strong cool-core systems selected from the HIghest X-ray FLUx Galaxy Cluster Sample (HIFLUGCS). We analyze their cool-core features observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. All individual systems in our sample exhibit at least a pair of positive and negative excess perturbations in the X-ray residual image after subtracting the global brightness profile. We extract and analyze X-ray spectra of the intracluster medium (ICM) in the detected perturbed regions. To investigate possible origins of the gas perturbations, we characterize thermodynamic properties of the ICM in the perturbed regions and characterize their correlations between positive and negative excess regions. The best-fit relations for temperature and entropy show a clear offset from the one-to-one relation, $T_\mathrm{neg}/T_\mathrm{pos}=1.20^{+0.04}_{-0.03}$ and $K_\mathrm{neg}/K_\mathrm{pos}=1.43\pm 0.07$, whereas the best-fit relation for pressure is found to be remarkably consistent with the one-to-one relation $P_\mathrm{neg}=P_\mathrm{pos}$, indicating that the ICM in the perturbed regions is in pressure equilibrium. These observed features in the HIFLUGCS sample are in agreement with the hypothesis that the gas perturbations in cool cores are generated by gas sloshing. We also analyze synthetic observations of perturbed cluster cores created from binary merger simulations, finding that the observed temperature ratio agrees with the simulations, $T_\mathrm{neg}/T_\mathrm{pos}\sim 1.3$. We conclude that gas sloshing induced by infalling substructures plays a major role in producing the characteristic gas perturbations in cool cores. We use high-precision combined strong/weak lensing and kinematics measurements of the total mass profiles of the observed galaxy clusters MACS~J1206.2-0847 and Abell~S1063, to constrain the relativistic sector of the general DHOST dark energy theories, which exhibit a partial breaking of the so called Vainsthein screening mechanism, on the linear level of scalar fluctuations around a cosmological background. In particular, by using the \textsc{MG-MAMMPOSSt} framework developed in Pizzuti et al. 2021, for the kinematics analysis of member galaxies in clusters along with lensing mass profile reconstructions, we provide new constraints on the coupling $Y_2$ which governs the theory's relativistic contribution to the lensing potential. The new bound from the combination of kinematics and lensing measurements of MACS 1206, $Y_2=-0.12^{+0.66}_{-0.67}$ at $2\sigma$, provides about a 2-fold improvement on previous constraints. In the case of Abell~S1063 a $>2\sigma$ tension with the GR expectation arises. We discuss this in some detail, and we investigate the possible sources of systematics which can explain the tension. We further discuss why the combination of kinematics of member galaxies with lensing is capable of providing much tighter bounds compared to kinematics or lensing alone, and we explain how the number density profile of tracers, as well as the choice of the velocity anisotropy profile affects the final results., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. We present our determination of the baryon budget for an X-ray-selected XXL sample of 136 galaxy groups and clusters spanning nearly two orders of magnitude in mass ($M_{500}\sim 10^{13}-10^{15}M_\odot$) and the redshift range $0< z < 1$. Our joint analysis is based on the combination of HSC-SSP weak-lensing mass measurements, XXL X-ray gas mass measurements, and HSC and SDSS multiband photometry. We carry out a Bayesian analysis of multivariate mass-scaling relations of gas mass, galaxy stellar mass, stellar mass of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), and soft-band X-ray luminosity, by taking into account the intrinsic covariance between cluster properties, selection effect, weak-lensing mass calibration, and observational error covariance matrix. The mass-dependent slope of the gas mass--total mass ($M_{500}$) relation is found to be $1.29_{-0.10}^{+0.16}$, which is steeper than the self-similar prediction of unity, whereas the slope of the stellar mass--total mass relation is shallower than unity, $0.85_{-0.09}^{+0.12}$. The BCG stellar mass weakly depends on cluster mass with a slope of $0.49_{-0.10}^{+0.11}$. The baryon, gas mass, and stellar mass fractions as a function of $M_{500}$ agree with the results from numerical simulations and previous observations. We successfully constrain the full intrinsic covariance of the baryonic contents. The BCG stellar mass shows the larger intrinsic scatter at a given halo total mass, followed in order by stellar mass and gas mass. We find a significant positive intrinsic correlation coefficient between total (and satellite) stellar mass and BCG stellar mass and no evidence for intrinsic correlation between gas mass and stellar mass. Extended Theories of Gravity with additional scalar degrees of freedom have recently acquired increasing interest due to the presence of a screening mechanism that allows suppressing at small scales (e.g., the Solar System scale) every modification restoring General Relativity. In this work, we consider a second-order Extended Theory of Gravity belonging to the family of Degenerate High Order Scalar Tensor theories (DHOST) characterized by a partial breaking of the Vainshtein screening mechanism. We study this model in two different scenarios as a description of dark energy only and as a description of both dark matter and dark energy. Such scenarios have been tested here by analysing a sample of 16 high-mass galaxy clusters targeted by the Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) program using two complementary probes, namely X-ray and strong-and-weak gravitational lensing observations. In mass modelling, we adopt a multi-component approach including hot gas and galactic stellar contributions. For the majority of the clusters in our sample, results show mild Bayesian evidence in favour of the DHOST model as a description of dark energy over General Relativity. This model also appears to alleviate the discrepancy present in General Relativity between X-ray hydrostatic and lensing mass estimates. For the second scenario where gravity acts as both dark energy and dark matter due to the partial breaking of the Vainshtein screening mechanism at cluster scales, the model is statistically disfavoured compared to General Relativity., Comment: 20 pages, 2 tables, 6 figures. We present the forward cosmological analysis of an $XMM$ selected sample of galaxy clusters out to a redshift of unity. Following our previous 2018 study based on the dn/dz quantity alone, we perform an upgraded cosmological analysis of the same XXL C1 cluster catalogue (178 objects), with a detailed account of the systematic errors. We follow the ASpiX methodology: the distribution of the observed X-ray properties of the cluster population is analysed in a 3D observable space (count rate, hardness ratio, redshift) and modelled as a function of cosmology. Compared to more traditional methods, ASpiX allows the inclusion of clusters down to a few tens of photons. We obtain an improvement by a factor of 2 compared to the previous analysis by letting the normalisation of the M-T relation and the evolution of the L-T relation free. Adding constraints from the XXL cluster 2-point correlation function and the BAO from various surveys decreases the uncertainties by 23 and 53 % respectively, and 62% when adding both. Switching to the scaling relations from the Subaru analysis, and letting free more parameters, our final constraints are $\sigma_8$ = $0.99^{+0.14}_{-0.23}$, $\Omega_m$ = 0.296 $\pm$ 0.034 ($S_8 = 0.98^{+0.11}_{-0.21}$) for the XXL sample alone. Finally, we combine XXL ASpiX, the XXL cluster 2-point correlation function and the BAO, with 11 free parameters, allowing for the cosmological dependence of the scaling relations in the fit. We find $\sigma_8$ = $0.793^{+0.063}_{-0.12}$, $\Omega_m$ = 0.364 $\pm$ 0.015 ($S_8 = 0.872^{+0.068}_{-0.12}$), but still compatible with Planck CMB at 2.2$\sigma$. The results obtained by the ASpiX method are promising; further improvement is expected from the final XXL cosmological analysis involving a cluster sample twice as large. Likelihood-free inference provides a rigorous approach to preform Bayesian analysis using forward simulations only. The main advantage of likelihood-free methods is its ability to account for complex physical processes and observational effects in forward simulations. We report the non-thermal pressure fraction (Pnt/Ptot) obtained from a three-dimensional triaxial analysis of 16 galaxy clusters in the CLASH sample using gravitational lensing (GL) data primarily from Subaru and HST, X-ray spectroscopic imaging from Chandra, and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) data from Planck and Bolocam. Our results span the approximate radial range 0.015-0.4R200m (35-1000 kpc). At cluster-centric radii smaller than 0.1R200m the ensemble average Pnt/Ptot is consistent with zero with an upper limit of nine per cent, indicating that heating from active galactic nuclei and other relevant processes does not produce significant deviations from hydrostatic equilibrium (HSE). The ensemble average Pnt/Ptot increases outside of this radius to approximately 20 per cent at 0.4R200m, as expected from simulations, due to newly accreted material thermalizing via a series of shocks. Also in agreement with simulations, we find significant cluster-to-cluster variation in Pnt/Ptot and little difference in the ensemble average Pnt/Ptot based on dynamical state. We conclude that on average, even for diverse samples, HSE-derived masses in the very central regions of galaxy clusters require only modest corrections due to non-thermal motions., Comment: published in MNRAS

Weak gravitational lensing of background galaxies provides a direct probe of the projected matter distribution in and around galaxy clusters. Here we present a self-contained pedagogical review of cluster--galaxy weak lensing, covering a range of topics relevant to its cosmological and astrophysical applications. We begin by reviewing the theoretical foundations of gravitational lensing from first principles, with special attention to the basics and advanced techniques of weak gravitational lensing. We study the dynamics of Abell 370 (A370), a highly massive Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy cluster, using self-consistent three-dimensional N-body/hydrodynamical simulations. Our simulations are constrained by X-ray, optical spectroscopic and gravitational lensing, and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect observations. Analyzing archival Chandra observations of A370 and comparing the X-ray morphology to the latest gravitational lensing mass reconstruction, we find offsets of ~30 kpc and ~100 kpc between the two X-ray surface brightness peaks and their nearest mass surface density peaks, suggesting that it is a merging system, in agreement with previous studies. Based on our dedicated binary cluster merger simulations, we find that initial conditions of the two progenitors with virial masses of 1.7 x 10^(15) M_sun and 1.6 x 10^(15) M_sun, an infall velocity of 3500 km/s, and an impact parameter of 100 kpc can explain the positions and the offsets between the peaks of the X-ray emission and mass surface density, the amplitude of the integrated SZ signal, and the observed relative line-of-sight velocity. Moreover, our best model reproduces the observed velocity dispersion of cluster member galaxies, which supports the large total mass of A370 derived from weak lensing. Our simulations suggest that A370 is a major merger after the second core passage in the infalling phase, just before the third core passage. In this phase, the gas has not settled down in the gravitational potential well of the cluster, which explains why A370 does not follow closely the galaxy cluster scaling relations., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, and 1 table, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. We perform a self-calibration of the richness-to-mass ($N$-$M$) relation of CAMIRA galaxy clusters with richness $N\geq15$ at redshift $0.2\leq z<1.1$ by modeling redshift-space two-point correlation functions. These correlation functions are $\xi_{\mathrm{cc}}$ of CAMIRA clusters, the auto-correlation function $\xi_{\mathrm{gg}}$ of the CMASS galaxies spectroscopically observed in the BOSS survey, and the cross-correlation function $\xi_{\mathrm{cg}}$ between these two samples. We focus on constraining the normalization $A_{\mathrm{N}}$ of the $N$-$M$ relation in a forward-modeling approach, carefully accounting for the redshift-space distortion, the Finger-of-God effect, and the uncertainty in photometric redshifts of CAMIRA clusters. The modeling also takes into account the projection effect on the halo bias of CAMIRA clusters. The parameter constraints are shown to be unbiased according to validation tests using a large set of mock catalogs constructed from N-body simulations. At the pivotal mass $M_{500}=10^{14}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ and the pivotal redshift $z_{\mathrm{piv}} = 0.6$, the resulting normalization $A_{\mathrm{N}}$ is constrained as $13.8^{+5.8}_{-4.2}$, $13.2^{+3.4}_{-2.7}$, and $11.9^{+3.0}_{-1.9}$ by modeling $\xi_{\mathrm{cc}}$, $\xi_{\mathrm{cc}}+\xi_{\mathrm{cg}}$, and $\xi_{\mathrm{cc}} + \xi_{\mathrm{cg}} + \xi_{\mathrm{gg}}$, with average uncertainties at levels of $36\%$, $23\%$, and $21\%$, respectively. We find that the resulting $A_{\mathrm{N}}$ is statistically consistent with those independently obtained from weak-lensing magnification and from a joint analysis of shear and cluster abundance, with a preference for a lower value at a level of $\lesssim1.9\sigma$. This implies that the absolute mass scale of CAMIRA clusters inferred from clustering is mildly higher than those from the independent methods. Green valley galaxies represent the population that is likely to transition from the star-forming to the quiescent phases. To investigate the role of the environment in quenching star formation, we use the wide-field data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Subaru Proposal survey to quantify the frequency of green valley galaxies in different environments and their redshift evolution. We find that the green valley fraction, in general, is less than 20% in any redshift and environment. The green valley fraction, when normalized to the total population, is higher in the field than that in groups or clusters and decreases with a decreasing redshift and increasing mass. The lower fraction of transitional galaxies in denser environments could be a consequence of the lack of star-forming galaxies, which could be the progenitors of green valley galaxies. To assess the effect of the environment on star formation quenching, we define the effective green valley fraction as the ratio of the number of green valley galaxies to that of nonquiescent galaxies only. The effective green valley fraction for field galaxies is lower than that for group or cluster galaxies, which reveals a strong positive mass dependence and mild redshift evolution. Moreover, the specific star formation rate (sSFR) is reduced by 0.1-0.3 dex in groups or clusters. The Beyond Ultra-deep Frontier Fields and Legacy Observations (BUFFALO) is a 101 orbit + 101 parallel Cycle 25 Hubble Space Telescope Treasury program taking data from 2018-2020. BUFFALO will expand existing coverage of the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) in WFC3/IR F105W, F125W, and F160W and ACS/WFC F606W and F814W around each of the six HFF clusters and flanking fields. This additional area has not been observed by HST but is already covered by deep multi-wavelength datasets, including Spitzer and Chandra. As with the original HFF program, BUFFALO is designed to take advantage of gravitational lensing from massive clusters to simultaneously find high-redshift galaxies which would otherwise lie below HST detection limits and model foreground clusters to study properties of dark matter and galaxy assembly. The expanded area will provide a first opportunity to study both cosmic variance at high redshift and galaxy assembly in the outskirts of the large HFF clusters. Five additional orbits are reserved for transient followup. We present constraints on the physical properties (including stellar mass, age, and star formation rate) of 207 $6\lesssim z \lesssim8$ galaxy candidates from the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS) and companion Spitzer-RELICS surveys. We measure photometry using T-PHOT and perform spectral energy distribution fitting using EA$z$Y and BAGPIPES. Of the 207 candidates for which we could successfully measure Spitzer fluxes, 23 were demoted to likely low redshift ($z<4$). Among the remaining high redshift candidates, we find intrinsic stellar masses between $1\times10^6\rm{M_{\odot}}$ and $4\times10^9\rm{M_\odot}$, and rest-frame UV absolute magnitudes between $-22.6$ and $-14.5$ mag. While our sample is mostly comprised of $L_{UV}/L^*_{UV}<1$ galaxies, there are a number of brighter objects in the sample, extending to $L_{UV}/L^*_{UV}\sim2$. The galaxies in our sample span approximately four orders of magnitude in stellar mass and star-formation rates, and exhibit ages ranging from maximally young to maximally old. We highlight 11 galaxies which have detections in Spitzer/IRAC imaging and redshift estimates $z\geq6.5$, several of which show evidence for some combination of evolved stellar populations, large contributions of nebular emission lines, and/or dust. Among these is PLCKG287+32-2013, one of the brightest $z\sim7$ candidates known (AB mag 24.9) with a Spitzer 3.6$\mu$m flux excess suggesting strong [OIII] + H-$\beta$ emission ($\sim$1000\AA\ rest-frame equivalent width). We discuss the possible uses and limits of our sample and present a public catalog of Hubble 0.4--1.6$\mu$m + Spitzer 3.6$\mu$m and 4.5$\mu$m photometry along with physical property estimates for all 207 objects in the sample. Because of their apparent brightnesses, high redshifts, and variety of stellar populations, these objects are excellent targets for follow-up with James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Extensive surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope over the past decade, targeting some of the most massive clusters in the sky, have uncovered dozens of galaxy cluster strong lenses. The massive cluster strong-lens scale is typically(E) similar to 10 '' to similar to 30 ''-35 '', with only a handful of clusters known with Einstein radii(E) similar to 40 '' or above (forz(source) = 2, nominally). Here we report another very large cluster lens, RXC J0032.1+1808 (z = 0.3956), the second-richest cluster in the redMapper cluster catalog and the 85th most massive cluster in the Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich catalog. With our light-traces-mass and fully parametric approaches, we construct strong-lensing models based on 18 multiple images of five background galaxies newly identified in the Hubble data, mainly from the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS), in addition to a known sextuply imaged system in this cluster. Furthermore, we compare these models to Lenstool and GLAFIC models that were produced independently as part of the RELICS program. All models reveal a large effective Einstein radius of(E) 40 '' (z(source) = 2), owing to the obvious concentration of substructures near the cluster center. Although RXC J0032.1+1808 has a very large critical area and high lensing strength, only three magnified high-redshift candidates are found within the field targeted by RELICS. Nevertheless, we expect many more high-redshift candidates will be seen in wider and deeper observations with Hubble or the James Webb Space Telescope. Finally, the comparison between several algorithms demonstrates that the total error budget is largely dominated by systematic uncertainties.
