Abscisic acid (ABA) interacts antagonistically with brassinosteroids (BRs) to control plant growth and development in response to stress. The response to environmental cues includes hormonal control via epigenetic regulation of gene expression. However, the details of the ABA–BR crosstalk remain largely unknown. Here, we show that JUMONJI-C domain containing histone demethylases (JMJs) coordinate the antagonistic interaction between ABA and BR signaling pathways during the post-germination stage in Arabidopsis. BR blocks ABA-mediated seedling arrest through repression of JMJ30. JMJs remove the repressive histone marks from the BRASSINAZOLE RESISTANT1 (BZR1) locus for its activation to balance ABA and BR signaling pathways. JMJs and BZR1 co-regulate genes encoding three membrane proteins, a regulator of vacuole morphology, and two lipid-transfer proteins, each of which play a different role in transport. BZR1 also regulates stimuli-related target genes in a JMJ-independent pathway. Our findings suggest that the histone demethylases integrate ABA and BR signals, leading to changes in growth program after germination.

China's Loess Plateau remains one of the most serious water erosion areas on Earth, while runoff and sediments of the Yellow River continue to decrease due to soil and water conservation (SWC) measures. Besides, climate conditions are dynamic. A total of 197 rainfall-runoff events from 1965 to 2020 in the Huangfuchuan catchment, which were divided into 3 sub-periods (P0: 1965 – 1982 limited measures; P1: 1983–1998 only dams and P2: 1999–2020 dams and revegetation), were selected to reveal the differences and mechanisms of runoff generation and sediment dynamics. The results show that: 1) anthropogenic activities played a leading role in water and sediment reduction; 2) infiltration-excess overland flow during the first two periods was dominant mechanism, but the results imply a potential shift towards saturation-excess overland flow occurring more often during P2; 3) the studied system, in a highly erodible region, is transport-limited; 4) sediment connectivity is reduced noticeably at the catchment scale, in which the decrease in index of connectivity (IC) values mainly resulted from the increase in proportion of the most disconnected areas of the catchment, especially in P2. These findings can help towards a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the changes in sediment dynamics, which can be applied to develop and implement sustainable water and soil conservation planning in the local or other similar areas. Besides this knowledge is very important for improving hydrological and sedimentological models in order to forecast the effects of human induced changes.

Land degradation and water resources pollution caused by catastrophic wildfires is of growing concern in fire-prone regions. Studies on the effects of wildfire on hydrology and erosion have mostly been conducted at plot or hillslope scale, while relatively few studies investigated post-wildfire hydrological responses and erosion at the meso-catchment scale (~ > 10 km2) in the Mediterranean. This study used measured discharge and suspended sediment at the outlet of a burnt catchment in southern Portugal, before and after a wildfire, to investigate post-wildfire changes in hydrological and erosion responses to rainfall. Hydrological and sediment connectivity patterns were derived to investigate changing dynamics induced by the fire within the catchment. The main findings were: (a) although a large part of the catchment experienced moderate to high severity burning, post-wildfire hydro-sedimentary response was considerably limited; (b) meteorological variability determined hydrological responses and erosion more strongly than wildfire effects; and (c) during the post-wildfire vegetation recovery period, only rainfall events with a high return period (~ 2 years) enhanced the hydrological and erosion responses. This can be explained by the spatial scale dependency of these processes and limited fine sediment supply, or relatively low connectivity in the study catchment. While connectivity is only an indicator, this implies that, at the meso-catchment scale, pollution of downstream water bodies by contaminated soil and ash may not occur immediately. Rather, because sediments and associated ashes and contaminants are first being transported to the areas around the stream networks, they only reach the outlet during heavy events which do connect the entire catchment. Thus, dynamic indices of connectivity that take rainfall event characteristics into consideration need to be further tested to assess and manage post-wildfire soil and water contamination risk.

During the 2014 GEOVIDE transect, seawater samples were collected for dissolved Pb and Pb isotope analysis. These samples provide a high-resolution "snapshot" of the source regions for the present Pb distribution in the North Atlantic Ocean. Some of these stations were previously occupied for Pb from as early as 1981, and we compare the 2014 data with these older data, some of which are reported here for the first time. Lead concentrations were highest in subsurface Mediterranean Water (MW) near the coast of Portugal, which agrees well with other recent observations by the US GEOTRACES program (Noble et al., 2015). The recently formed Labrador Sea Water (LSW) between Greenland and Nova Scotia is much lower in Pb concentration than the older LSW found in the West European Basin due to decreases in Pb emissions into the atmosphere during the past 20 years. Comparison of North Atlantic data from 1989 to 2014 shows decreasing Pb concentrations consistent with decreased anthropogenic inputs, active scavenging, and advection/convection. Although the isotopic composition of northern North Atlantic seawater appears more homogenous compared to previous decades, a clear spatiotemporal trend in isotope ratios is evident over the past 15 years and implies that small changes to atmospheric Pb emissions continue. Emissions data indicate that the relative proportions of US and European Pb sources to the ocean have been relatively uniform during the past 2 decades, while aerosol data may suggest a greater relative proportion of natural mineral Pb. Using our measurements in conjunction with emissions inventories, we support the findings of previous atmospheric analyses that a significant portion of the Pb deposited to the ocean in 2014 was natural, although it is obscured by the much greater solubility of anthropogenic aerosols over natural ones.
