This article is concerned with cultural events and the way they are arranged. It discusses how the implementation of the stringent rules and organizational principles of project management might prove counterproductive in cultural events. The underlying assumption is that cultural events are complex and ever-evolving systems based on creative and artistic processes, so they escape traditional planning and control practices. The complexity of cultural events can be explored through four dimensions. The first concerns the social, cultural, economic, and technological context and the relevance of the influence held by the various stakeholders. The second dimension is related to the multiplicity of objectives underlying each cultural event. The third dimension refers to the concept, the content, and the artistic and cultural creation processes behind the uniqueness of an event. Finally, the last element concerns event management and its iterative dynamic as a project where the four dimensions of complexity are intertwined. Traditional project management usually proposes tools and techniques that tend to dominate and control the project, following a deterministic approach. This attitude may be inadequate to control the environmental, strategic, creative, and managerial complexity of any cultural event, which, rather, must be explored and absorbed. Accordingly, it is suggested that a more systemic perspective be adopted through which routine project management tools are reviewed to pave the way for a new approach when organizing and managing cultural events.

Associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, body dissatisfaction in young men requires close examination. This study explores online accounts relating to male body image, including young men’s personal disclosures within one online newspaper article, and posts responding to this topic. Discursively informed thematic analysis indicated that non-disclosure was considered a problematic social expectation by the young men featured in the article. Also, reader posts variously constructed body dissatisfaction as a symptom of adolescence, a lack of self-care and an incapacity to capitalise on compensatory qualities. Our analysis suggests young men may welcome safe opportunities to critically discuss prevailing body image ideals.

Spanning humanitarian responses from all over the world, Shelter Projects 2015-2016 is the sixth in a series of compilations of shelter case studies, overviews of emergencies and opinion pieces. The projects represent responses to conflict, natural disasters and complex or multiple crises, demonstrating some of the implementation and response options available. The book is intended to support learning by highlighting the strengths, weaknesses and some of the lessons that can be learned from different projects, which try to maximize emergency funds to safeguard the health, security and dignity of affected people, whilst – wherever possible – supporting longer-term shelter needs and sustainable recovery. The target audience is humanitarian managers and shelter programme staff from local, national and international organizations at all levels of experience. Shelter Projects is also a useful resource for advocacy purposes, showcasing the work done by the sector, as well as for research and capacity-building activities.

Suppose that the only available information in a multi-class problem are expert estimates of the conditional probabilities of occurrence for a set of binary features. The aim is to select a subset of features to be measured in subsequent data collection experiments. In the lack of any information about the dependencies between the features, we assume that all features are conditionally independent and hence choose the Naive Bayes classifier as the optimal classifier for the problem. Even in this (seemingly trivial) case of complete knowledge of the distributions, choosing an optimal feature subset is not straightforward. We discuss the properties and implementation details of Sequential Forward Selection (SFS) as a feature selection procedure for the current problem. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to investigate whether the same features are selected when the probabilities vary around the estimated values. In November 1983, the final report for the initial crashworthy cyclic control stick effort was published. The report detailed the development and testing of a purely mechanical self-contained crashworthy cyclic control stick equipped with load-limiting and separating joint. The joint was to limit impact loads transmitted to a crewmember. This report covers the additional development and testing of this concept by Simula Inc. to further delethalize the separating crashworthy cyclic control stick. Using an impact load-limiting grip pad and reduction of the moving mass to reduce the inertial forces, two configurations were subjected to static and dynamic pendululm testings. Additional destructive static tested in a full-scale dynamic test using an anthropomorphic dummy and a vertically stroking UH-60A Black Hawk crewseat. Testing demonstrated that the delethalized stick worked as intended when struck by the dummy. It also showed that the loads transmitted to the dummy were far less than with conventional sticks.

Background: Measures of memory awareness based on evaluative judgement and performance monitoring are often regarded as equivalent, but the Levels of Awareness framework suggests they reflect different awareness phenomena. Examination of memory awareness among groups with differing degrees of impairment provides a test of this proposition. Method: Ninety-nine people with dementia (PwD), 30 people with mild cognitive impairment (PwMCI), and their relatives completed isomorphic performance monitoring and evaluative judgement measures of memory awareness and were followed up at 12 and (PwD only) 20 months. In addition to the resulting awareness indices, comparative accuracy scores were calculated using the relatives’ data to establish whether any inaccuracy was specific to self-ratings. Results: When making evaluative judgements about their memory in general, both PwD and PwMCI tended to overestimate their own functioning relative to informant ratings made by relatives. When monitoring performance on memory tests, PwD again overestimated performance relative to test scores, but PwMCI were much more accurate. Comparative accuracy scores indicated that, unlike PwD, PwMCI do not show a specific inaccuracy in self-related appraisals. Conclusions: The results support the proposition that awareness indices at the levels of evaluative judgement and performance monitoring should be regarded as reflecting distinct awareness phenomena.
