The importance is discussed of investment by large, small, local or global mining companies, especially in collaboration with mining machinery manufacturers, in order to (co-)develop technological innovations such as autonomous haulage systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. The establishment of a three-component management system comprising innovation strategy, innovation engine and enablers to maximise innovation investments is proposed.
