Since coming into force the International Criminal Court, has been challenged with a series of issues. Criticism, especially, from African states has forwarded the underlying anxieties that riddles this relatively new institution of international criminal justice. More specifically, African states and the regional organ, the African Union, have denounced the Courts functioning on the continent - seeking to restructure a more egalitarian Rome Statute regime. The thesis answers three interrelated research questions 1) What are the complaints by African states against the International Criminal Court? 2) Does the AU Malabo Protocol (2014) and ICC Withdrawal Strategy (2017) signal a rooming disunion between the International Criminal Court and Africa? 3) What are the implications of the contentious provisions and structural shortcomings of the Rome Statute legal regime and institutional order on the becoming of the International Criminal Court? Employing a Third World Approaches to International Law and Postcolonial Ontological Security lens, the thesis makes the overall conclusion that the Other, AU, committed to standing in the face of the master Self, ICC, demanding a more egalitarian international criminal law system serves the Courts operation on the continent.

I present an ethnographic account of the Gazi fishing community in coastal Kenya through an exploration of what it means to be an artisanal fisher, what it means to live in a fishing village, and how a sense of meaning-making is nurtured to navigate around an uncertain world. Since fishing is the mainstay activity in this village, an increase in fishing effort during the past 20 years and overall catches remaining relatively unchanged has led to a decline in catch per fisher. I conducted a quantitative study in the village in 2008, focussing on marine resource use, relations, conflicts and governance. In this study, I investigate how the people manoeuvre in an environment of uncertainty using participant observation, informal interviews and 32 in-depth interviews, each lasting about an hour with active and retired fishers, fish traders and the former village chair. I shall show in chapter 3 how fishing communities learn how to fish. In chapter 4, I show the conditions under which residents evoke witchcraft or predetermined destiny in everyday conversations to explain misfortunes and eliminate coincidence. I explore, in chapter 5, how the uncertainties in fish catches lead to rumours to enrich our understanding of fishing skills and the sensory perception of fishers. In chapter 6, I explore how uncertainties in landings have led to what I call the ‘forced’ gift economy where residents increasingly force fishers to give them fish gifts to make a living and get food for their families. My study contributes to four main areas: 1) instalment and sensory engagement, 2) rumours constructed to resolve confusions or contradictions that experience in daily life contains, 3) anthropology of ethics and morality and 4) anthropology of destiny. Finally, I suggest the need to integrate knowledge derived from such ethnographic studies into fisheries policy and management programmes.

Toni Morrison received the Pulitzer Prize for her books Beloved (1987) and The Bluest Eye (1993). Human existence includes the experience of psychological distress. Both books are heartbreaking in their examinations of the suffering black people experienced during slavery when whites treated them as property and compared them to animals. In this work, Morrison examined how psychological damage brought on by tragedy may lead to isolation and social immobility. Her writing mostly focuses on the experiences of women victims of sexual and racial persecution. Beloved by Toni Morrison shows many aspects of trauma, such as disintegration, continuity between the past and the present, and restoration. Individuals, families, and even communities may all show signs of trauma. Morrison’s account contains other painful elements, but the overpowering intensity of these occurrences is the most prominent. This dissertation delves into the struggles, fears, and mental pain the black characters in Toni Morrison’s works face.

Hacking and trolling; mass murders and bullying. What do these have in common? One theory holds that these are all "deviant" social behaviors, occurring both online and off, which have purportedly been brought about or exacerbated by our new media environment. Such aberrant behaviors seemingly give us ample reason to fear digital and social media. But is technology to blame? We will grapple with this question as we investigate how our understanding of new technologies and media is socially shaped and, in turn, how new media might influence our social behavior. We will begin by studying how similar panics about "old" media (books, film, television and even the written word itself) set historical precedents for these current fears. Along the way we will establish and explore issues embedded in debates about new media, including questions of class, gender, youth, sex, and violence. Such topics will be placed in cross-cultural perspective, allowing us to compare the nature of panics over contemporary events and issues—e.g. the Columbine school shootings, cyber-bullying, Japanese otaku, and the Chinese "Human Flesh Search Engine"—occurring within both the United States and East Asia. Students will read essays, keep media journals and watch films pertaining to weekly topics.

Within this study, we will deal with this new being that, unlike the robot, has a human appearance and is emotionally autonomous. Taking into consideration this last feature, the cyborg represents an increased anxiety, since it blurs the borderline between human and machine. Throughout specific examples of cyborgs in literature and film, we will try to delimit this borderline and analyse the anxieties caused by the transgression of this limit. The cyborg is a new figuration of the imagined consequence of the interdependent relationship between man and machine. We fear not only the loss of control of technology, but also the loss of humanity., En el contexto de la posmodernidad, el cíborg emerge como una nueva imagen del autómata moderno. Breathing Matters introduces this phenomenon as a forceful potentiality for feminist intersectional theories, politics, and social and environmental justice. By analyzing the material and discursive as well as the natural and cultural enactments of breath in black lung disease, phone sex work, and anxieties and panic attacks, Breathing Matters proposes a nonuniversalizing and politicized understanding of embodiment. In this approach, human bodies are onceptualized as agential actors of intersectional politics. Magdalena Górska argues that struggles for breath and for breathable lives are matters of differential forms of political practices in which vulnerable and quotidian corpomaterial and corpo-affective actions are constitutive of politics. Through 16 problem-focused interviews in three German surgical clinics, anxieties that affect the adoption of ambient intelligence in healthcare were investigated. This research reveals 17 anxieties, grouped into 5 categories containing implementation anxieties of ambient intelligence in hospitals. The results expand the basis in theory underlying technology-related anxieties of medical professionals and offer theoretical and practical implications, leading to an initial basis for decisions regarding the implementation of ambient systems.

In the context of concerns about childhood obesity, mothers are placed at the forefront of responsibility for shaping the eating behaviour and consequently the health of their young children. This is evident in a multitude of diverse sites such as government reports, health promotion materials, reality TV shows and the advice of childcare nurses and preschools. These sites produce a range of resources available to mothers to draw on to constitute themselves as mothers in terms of caring for their children's health. Drawing on a qualitative study of mothers recruited through three Australian preschool centres, this article examines how the working-class and middle-class mothers of preschool-aged children engage with knowledge about motherhood, children and health and how those engagements impact on their mothering, their foodwork and their children. We argue that, unlike the working-class mothers pathologised in some literature on obesity, these working-class mothers demonstrated a no-nonsense (but still responsibilised) approach to feeding their children. The middle-class mothers, on the other hand, were more likely to engage in practices of self-surveillance and to demonstrate considerable anxieties about the appropriateness of their practices for their children's current and future health.

This perspective is discussed through the exploration of the so-called intersectional approach described by Berger and Guidroz, Haraway's situated knowledges, and Butler's performative agency based on transgressions. Framed within the posthuman, post-biological deconstruction of social and cultural hierarchies, Zalbidea and Sotelo argue for the value of a conjuncture between postcolonial post-modern/post-structuralist literature and the field of feminist cultural studies. It draws on gift theories in economic anthropology which explain gifts as engendering social relations of reciprocity and beyond, and shaping social life differently to commodities. Understanding how and why commodities become gifts (and vice versa), we contend, provides a new way of understanding some of the complex ways in which social relations are implicated in sustainable consumption. This chapter examines the racial anxieties at work in the Australian women’s movement in the early 1900s, focussing on campaigns and organisations aimed at increasing and ‘improving’ the white population on the one hand and discussions of the ‘Aboriginal problem’ on the other. It particularly examines the activities of the National Council of Women, the largest women’s group of this period, and the Australian Federation of Women Voters, a smaller but highly influential organisation, as well as local groups which emerged to further these causes. Specifically, it explores efforts to promote immigration from Britain, which went alongside eugenic measures to exclude ‘unfit’ white migrants as well, and various schemes aimed at producing ‘well born’ white children. As I hope to show, these seemingly disparate activities were informed by a single racial imperative. The racial interests of the movement coalesced around anxieties about the need for a large and healthy white population to secure the nation’s future. Indeed, their racially based reforming campaigns revolved almost entirely around anxieties internal to whiteness. While the women’s movement showed remarkably little interest in the ‘Aboriginal problem’, or the ‘peril’ of Asian immigration, their vigorous campaigns around improving the quality and quantity of the white population reveal how racialised thinking in fact permeated the movement and animated many of its endeavours. And women’s work was presented as essential to implementing these vital racial programs.

Peer bias is recognised as a primary factor in negative student perceptions of peer assessment strategies. This study trialled the use of classroom response systems, widely known as clickers, in small seminar classes in order to actively engage students in their subject’s assessment process while providing the anonymity that would lessen the impact of peer pressure. Focus group reflection on the students’ impressions of the peer evaluation process, the use of clickers, and their anxieties about potential peer bias were analysed in the light of the results of teacher and class evaluations of each individual student presentation. The findings revealed that students recognised the value of peer assessment in promoting class engagement and active learning, despite their ongoing resistance to the practice of peer review. An unexpected finding suggested that the clickers, selected as an educational technology for their appeal and ease of use by the ‘digital native’ student already familiar with a variety of mobile communication and gaming devices, reinforced student perception that the peer review process was akin to a popularity contest.

This chapter examines the racial anxieties at work in the Australian women’s movement in the early 1900s, focussing on campaigns and organisations aimed at increasing and ‘improving’ the white population on the one hand and discussions of the ‘Aboriginal problem’ on the other. It particularly examines the activities of the National Council of Women, the largest women’s group of this period, and the Australian Federation of Women Voters, a smaller but highly influential organisation, as well as local groups which emerged to further these causes. Specifically, it explores efforts to promote immigration from Britain, which went alongside eugenic measures to exclude ‘unfit’ white migrants as well, and various schemes aimed at producing ‘well born’ white children. As I hope to show, these seemingly disparate activities were informed by a single racial imperative. The racial interests of the movement coalesced around anxieties about the need for a large and healthy white population to secure the nation’s future. Indeed, their racially based reforming campaigns revolved almost entirely around anxieties internal to whiteness. The evolution of the different forms of anxiety of a patient (P) with panic attacks is described during seven years of the psychoanalytic process. The P is considered initially like a borderline organization of the personality. She was living her adolescence altered with predominance of the schizoparanoid position; was suffering of pathological narcissism, agoraphobia, panic attacks and somatisations as consequences, mainly, of an insuffi cient separation-individuation and a pathological symbiosis with her primitive mother. Her anxieties of separation that was inducing, sometimes, panic attacks and somatisations, were reedited repetitively in transference and were elaborated during the fi rst years. Those and other symptoms diminished gradually of intensity, and disappeared or they stopped being a preoccupation. In order to look for convergences, supplementations and divergences in the theories, are reviewed the conceptualisations constructed on the different forms of anxiety. The anxieties of P correspond more to the pre-oedipus anxieties that to those of the later positions. Several forms of anxieties are related to reliving traumatic experiences or they take place to anticipate them and to possibly avoid these overfl owing experiences. Indeed, the P has not only lived one traumatic separation from her mother when she was six years old, but it is inferred that she has also suffered negative and cumulative traumas. Those traumatic experiences had not allowed to the construction of a self suffi ciently cohesive nor a suffi cient separation-individuation that could allow the elaboration of her adolescence. Then the P was living in permanent anxiety that was precipitating easily her panic attacks and somatisations in the presence of the situations of separation of her mother primitive-analyst. Her anxiety of separation and her panic attacks were also the factors of her anxiety of death and insomnia., Se describe la evolución de las diferentes formas de angustia de una paciente (P) con ataques de pánico, durante los siete años del proceso psicoanalítico. Se considera inicialmente a P como con una organización fronteriza de la personalidad. Ella vivía su adolescencia alterada con predominio de la posición esquizoparanoide; padecía de narcisismo patológico; sufría de agorafobia, ataques de pánico y somatizaciones como consecuencia, principalmente, de una insufi ciente separación-individuación y de una simbiosis patológica con su madre primitiva. Su angustia de separación, que inducía a veces ataques de pánico y somatizaciones, se re-actualizaba repetitivamente en transferencia y se elaboró durante los primeros años. Esos y otros síntomas disminuyeron su intensidad paulatinamente, y luego desaparecieron o dejaron de ser una preocupación. Con el propósito de buscar convergencias, suplementos y divergencias en las teorías, se revisan las conceptualizaciones construidas sobre las diferentes formas de angustias. Las de P corresponden más a las pre-edípicas que a las de las posiciones posteriores. Varias formas de angustia se relacionan con re-vivencias traumáticas o se producen por anticiparlas y, eventualmente, para evitar estas vivencias desbordantes. Efectivamente, P no ha vivido solamente una separación traumática de su madre cuando tenía seis años, sino que se infi ere haber padecido también traumas negativos y acumulativos. Esas vivencias traumáticas no le habían permitido la construcción de un self sufi cientemente cohesivo ni una separación-individuación sufi ciente que le permitieran elaborar su adolescencia. Entonces P vivía en angustias permanentes que le precipitaban fácilmente en ataques de pánico y somatizaciones ante las situaciones de separación de su madre primitiva-analista. Su angustia de separación y sus ataques de pánico eran también los factores de su angustia de muerte y de su insomnio.

This dissertation describes an experimental study into information provision for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. In the general introduction the reason for undertaking the study is described. From 1980 until the end of 1987 a preoperative educational programme had been offered to patients awaiting coronary artery bypass surgery at the University Hospital in Rotterdam. The underlying assumption was that information provision would reduce anxiety and facilitate postoperative recovery, the more so since it was assumed, De opbouw van het proefschrift is als volgt. Gezien de vooronderstelling die aan het aanbieden van het voorlichtingsprogramma ten grondslag lag, leek het zinvol om in de literatuur na te gaan wat onder de begrippen patientenvoorlichting, angst en (postoperatief) herstel verstaan wordt. Hiervan wordt respectievelijk in hoofdstuk 1, 2 en 3, verslag gedaan. Hoofdstuk 4 geeft een overzicht van de literatuur (tot media 1986) met betrekking tot eerder verrichte onderzoeken naar de effectiviteit van psychologische voorbereidingsinterventies op ingrijpende medische procedures. De oorspronkelijke versie van dit hoofdstuk is reeds eerder in artikelvorm gepubliceerd. Het voordee1 van dit hoofdstuk is dat het als een afgerond geheel gelezen kan worden; het heeft echter als nadeel dat enkele herhalingen voorkomen. In de volgende hoofdstukken wordt het eigen onderzoek beschreven. De methode van onderzoek wordt in hoofdstuk 5 beschreven. In hoofdstuk 6 worden kenmerken van de steekproefpatienten gepresenteerd. De resultaten van de effectmetingen ten aanzien van het voorlichtingsprogramma komen in hoofdstuk 7 aan de orde. In de discussie, hoofdstuk 8, wordt ingegaan op de betekenis van de resultaten van het onderzoek. Tevens komen complicerende factoren aan bod die de resultaten beinvloed kunnen hebben. Verder worden enkele aanbevelingen voor toekomstig onderzoek gedaan.
