- Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to explore and examine the social and cultural challenges that can arise in connection with the Muslim identity formation in modern western society. In the exploration and clarification of the above, it is important to delve into the historical, sociological, and theological context that can shape the Muslim identity. To understand these aspects, it is imperative to look at the relationship between religion and identity, and what social and cultural challenges may arise regarding the formation of Muslim identity. The methodology used in this thesis is both qualitative and quantitative. In chapter one and two, I have composed a brief discussion of the historical and theoretical background of the concept of identity. I have also formed a brief discussion of early theorists, such as Erik Erikson (early formation of identity theory) and Sheldon Stryker (structural symbolic interactionism). An Islamic point of view by Uriya Shavit is also included in this discussion in this chapter. Several scientific perspectives have been employed in this chapter; many of which point out that identity has played a major part in the life of individuals in both Islamic and non-Islamic context. In chapter three and four, I have constituted analysis of social identity theory and the theory of uncertainty identity and how they can influence the meaning of the individual’s life meaning. I have included the social identity theory by Henri Tajfel and John Turner. Theoretically, it highlights that an individual's interaction with groups can give her/ him a sense of affiliation, self-esteem, and certainty. An introduction and Michael’s Hogg theory of uncertainty identity is presented in this discussion as well as Islamic scholarly review of the Muslim identity and sense of affiliation and uncertainty.
