This article explores the novel use of natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) in real food by incorporating them into mayonnaise, either alone or with pigmented rice bran (RB). Results showed that NaDES-fortified mayonnaises could prevent lipid oxidation. Notably, mayonnaises with NaDES2 (betaine:sucrose:water) significantly reduced the production of lipid hydroperoxides, which was maintained to an average of 2.6 mmol LOOH/kg oil, which is 2.9 times lower than the control (7.5 mmol LOOH/kg oil), or 7.4 times lower than mayonnaise with citric acid (19.1 mmol LOOH/kg oil). NaDES2-fortified mayonnaises maintained high tocopherols levels (0.97 g/Kg oil) and reduced volatile compounds from secondary lipid oxidation. This effect may result from NaDES altering the aqueous phase properties of mayonnaise, notably by reducing water activity by ∼0.1. Finally, pre-enrichment of the NaDES phase with bioactive molecules (e.g. from pigmented RB) represents an innovative perspective to promote the health benefits of formulated foods.

The Upper Blue Nile basin is important for sustaining millions of livelihoods in Ethiopia and downstream nations. However, there are very few hydroclimate observatories in the basin. Remote sensing is an alternative for providing synoptic, repetitive, and timely information. This review investigated how remote sensing data is applied in studying the basin's hydrology. The main application areas include satellite rainfall products evaluation, land use land cover change mapping, evapotranspiration modeling, groundwater recharge estimation, and soil moisture and water storage monitoring. CHIRPS is reported to be the best-performing satellite-based precipitation product. Natural forest, grassland, and shrubland coverage is decreasing, whereas agriculture and urban are increasing. Remote Sensing is used to extract hydrogeological features, identify recharge zones, assess soil moisture, and manage reservoirs. Overall, this review offers insights into how remote sensing can be applied in hydrology, benefiting policymakers, researchers, and practitioners by harnessing the full potential of remote sensing technology.

This article argues that aging and ancestry is integral to Ernest Favenc’s late-colonial frontier Gothic writing. Through his repeated attention to scenes of settler death, and his creation of ghostly seventeenth-century and nineteenth-century explorers, Favenc makes the desert a graveyard and generates sets of settler ancestors, who stake a claim on the land for Euro-Australians. Written in a context of ‘doomed race theory’, which recognised Indigenous generational presence yet foreclosed their futures, white Australians in Favenc’s work become a younger ‘first’ peoples with their own history of dying on the land, just as older Aboriginal Australians en masse are written as going extinct. Whereas ageist rhetoric in the late colonial period indexes Aboriginal Australians as decrepit and weak, white remains and ghosts in Favenc’s works articulate age as a positive, as settlers dying on the land become ancestors. Favenc’s Austral ancestors enact a replacement narrative, writing over Indigenous peoples and further legitimising settlement. Reading aging and ancestry in Favenc’s frontier Gothic therefore augments readings of the colonial Australian Gothic as imbricated in the settler-colonial project rather than unsettling it.

Since the first report of cationic reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in 2015, there have been great developments in many aspects of cationic RAFT and degenerative chain transfer (DT) polymerizations, including effective chain-transfer agents, applicable initiators or catalysts, controllable monomers, and controlled architectures of polymers. Cationic RAFT polymerizations exhibit not only many similarities to radical RAFT polymerizations in terms of thiocarbonylthio-based RAFT agents, RAFT mechanisms, and controlled polymer structures but also differences originating from the cationic polymerizations, such as novel RAFT or DT agents, initiation and propagation mechanisms, controllable monomers, and stereostructures of the resulting polymers. This review covers the progress made with cationic RAFT and DT polymerizations, focusing on the similarities and differences between cationic and radical RAFT polymerizations. In total, the characteristics and expanding potentials of cationic RAFT and DT polymerizations are discussed.

This paper analyzes tax competition and coordination, determining which is better in a multi-region endogenous growth model. With an integrated capital market, increased capital tax in one region generates external benefits to others through an increased tax base originating from capital flight. Because this efficiency cost affects resource allocation between private and public goods and intertemporal consumption and investment choice, a higher cost derives a lower equilibrium capital tax rate, leading to a higher economic growth rate. Consequently, the inefficiency costs exert two opposite welfare effects via inefficiently low public goods supply and high economic growth. Naturally, tax coordination to cope with severe tax competition is welfare improving to resolve the underprovision of public goods instead of accepting low growth. In contrast, tax coordination is not desirable if tax competition is mild because benefits from high growth outweigh the costs of an undersupply of public goods.

In vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions, pedestrian injuries occur due to contact with the car and the ground. Previous studies investigated pedestrian kinematic behavior using a parameter study or through statistical analysis although the force interaction between the pedestrian and the vehicle has not been considered. In this study, multibody analyses were conducted for vehicle–pedestrian collisions for adult and child pedestrian with various vehicle shapes. The impulse and impulse moment acting on the pedestrian from the vehicle were introduced, and the kinematic behavior, rotation and ground impact of the pedestrian model were examined. It was found that if an impulse moment acts on the pedestrian when the pedestrian re-contacts with the hood of the car, the angular velocity of the pedestrian’s torso changes in the opposite direction (away from the car), and the torso angle prior to the ground contact decreases to less than 90°. This re-contact between the pedestrian and the vehicle was more likely to occur for cases where the collision involves an adult pedestrian, lower hood leading edge (HLE), longer hood length, and lower collision velocity. When the pedestrian torso angle in contact with the ground was less than 90°, the head vertical impact velocity with respect to the ground became less than 2.9m/s which corresponds to the injury threshold of the head. This study demonstrated that pedestrian-vehicle re-contact is crucial for reducing ground injury. The vehicle shape, pedestrian size, and collision velocity can determine whether re-contact of the pedestrian with the vehicle occurs. This can then explain the factors affecting pedestrian ground impact injury (e.g., higher HLE, higher risk of ground head injury for children) that were shown in previous studies. A strategy to mitigate ground injury is to apply enough impulse moment onto the pedestrian’s upper body from the hood in order to change the torso angular velocity during re-contact, thus making the torso

A new explicit numerical scheme for integrating the relativistic equations of motion for electrically charged particles is proposed as an alternative to the Boris integrator. It has been known that the original Boris integrator includes a large numerical error in the relativistic motion, although the integrator has been used in particle-in-cell simulations of plasma for a half century. The present integrator approximates the theoretical trajectory of the relativistic E-cross-B motion for a charged particle more accurately than the previous explicit integrators such as the Boris, Vay, and Higuera-Cary ones.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) has been under the research spotlight as an exceptional solid lubricant. Its friction performance is depending on a well-developed transfer layer upon its counterparts. Nowadays, iron-and brass-based metals have been utilized as the counterpart against DLC, however, it is reported their friction behaviors are somewhat inferior compared to titanium alloys. In this study, we tried to improve their friction behaviors and modified the contact interface from Fe/C to C/C by Ti addition in DLC. It was revealed that Ti, which has good adhesion for Fe and C, promoted the development of carbon transfer on Fe-based counterpart. Furthermore, Ti built-up a thick carbonous transfer layer and make better the friction performance of DLC sliding against Fe.

Thermal conduction was investigated in titanium-chromium oxide natural superlattices with an ordered arrangement of crystallographic shear planes, which were nearly pristine interfaces for thermal phonons. Thermal conductivity exhibited a clear maximum value at around 50 K, which indicates interface roughness as small as 20 pm based on the calculation of thermal conductivity by a modified Debye-Callaway model. With an ordered arrangement of nearly pristine interfaces at nanoscale, the wave contribution to phonon transport was estimated to be predominant at lower temperatures (less than 100 K) and as much as 30 % even at room temperature. We found that the interface roughness greatly influences the thermal conduction in natural superlattice systems, which may lead to variations in the reported value of thermal conductivity. We have demonstrated that the wave contribution of thermal conductivity become apparent in bulk crystal having nano scale periodic structure with pristine interfaces.

Monsoon precipitation affects natural and social systems in East Asia, one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Monsoon precipitation variability is strongly influenced by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and may be related to the phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). However, a collective understanding of the long-term PDO-ENSO-monsoon relationship remains limited because related studies are almost exclusively based on short instrumental records. Although paleoclimate proxies for PDO and ENSO are currently available, there is a lack of high-quality proxies for East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) precipitation. Moreover, the strengthening of the ENSO-EASM relationship since the 1970s has raised the question of anthropogenic impact. Reconstructing EASM precipitation is thus crucial to understanding its variability under natural and anthropogenic forcings. In this study, we addressed these challenges using tree ring oxygen isotopes of red cypress (Chamaecyparis formosensis Matsum), a long-lived endemic tree species in Taiwan. We developed an annual-resolved and well-validated EASM precipitation proxy from 1533 CE to 2011 which explained 49 % of the variance in instrumental precipitation. In comparison with multiple paleoclimate proxies, we revealed that PDO persistently modulated the ENSO-EASM relationship over the past half-millennium. The ENSO-EASM relationship was enhanced during the positive PDO phases and dynamically weakened during the negative PDO phases, notably in the early-17th, 18th, and early to mid-20th centuries. The strengthened relationship since the 1970s concurred with an unusually high PDO and ENSO and fell within its natural variability. Nevertheless, as the amplitude of the PDO is predicted to weaken under warming, the modulation effects may become less predictable.

In the general turning process, solutions for attaining the tool-workpiece relative position such as in-situ touch probes, external devices mounted with air/electric micrometers, and cameras are either indirect or cost/space-consuming. In this paper, a novel direct contact detection method based on the internal data of the machine tool servo and the self-identification strategy of the rotational center as an application of the detection method are proposed. The former method compares the internal data of the non-contact and contact motions, and then precisely identifies the contact position by processing it backwardly. The latter method makes multiple contacts on the pre-machined surface of the workpiece with a redundant-axis movement, and the rotational center identification is realized using the coordinates of contacts achieved by the former method. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified experimentally.

For further gravitational wave (GW) detections, it is significant to invent a technique to reduce all kinds of mirror displacement noise dominant at low frequencies for ground-based detectors. The neutron displacement-noise-free interferometer (DFI) is one of the tools to reduce all the mirror displacement noise at lower frequencies. In this paper, we describe a further simplified configuration of a neutron DFI in terms of neutron incidence direction. In the new configuration, neutrons enter the interferometer with unidirectional incidence at four speeds as opposed to two bidirectional incidences of opposite directions at two speeds as reported previously. This simplification of the neutron DFI is significant for proof-of-principle experiments.

Model-based design and optimization methods facilitate industrial applications of chromatographic separations. The uncertainty of the model parameters must be quantified to ensure robust design and control. In this study, we propose an approach using the sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) method based on the Bayesian principle to estimate the uncertainty of the parameters. The linear driving force model for separation of phenol and p-cresol was considered as an example. By comparing different injection tests, we confirmed the necessity of pulse injection and breakthrough experiments to estimate parameters with sufficient accuracy and precision. We also found that modeling observation errors carefully is critical to obtain reasonable estimation.

Public investment is a central issue in the dynamic analyses of fiscal policy and economic growth. Debt financing for public investment and its effects have recently received great attention because interest rates have been low, almost invariably remaining below economic growth rates. This paper presents examination of the effects of debt-financed public investment subject to a simple fiscal rule in an overlapping generations model with public capital. This topic includes capital budgeting and the debt–deficit criterion of the Maastricht treaty. We show herein that debt financing for public investment enhances economic growth if an economy is dynamically inefficient and if public capital has a sufficiently large productivity effect. Moreover, it reduces economic growth rates in a dynamically efficient economy. Debt and growth can have a monotonic or non-monotonic relation, depending on the steady-state interest rate, growth rate, and productivity effect of public investment. The findings indicate that debt–growth relations match with controversial empirical evidence. Furthermore, existing generations choose perfect debt finance if dynamic inefficiency exists. In contrast, a balanced budget is preferred in a dynamically efficient economy with low productivity effects of public capital. However, an economy with high productivity effects of public capital might cho ose debt financing. This paper contributes to the elucidation of currently emphasized issues of public investment.

The control of the entrainment and diffusion of the heat and mass ejected along the jet flow requires the control of fluid motion. In the present study, optimal initial velocity distributions for suppressing and promoting jet entrainment and diffusion were identified using deep reinforcement learning under constant initial jet flow rate conditions. Two-dimensional jet flow simulations using OpenFOAM were combined with a deep Q-network as the learning algorithm. The spatial distribution of the initial jet (velocity and ejection angle) changed. The results show that to suppress the entrainment of the jet, an optimal initial velocity distribution shape in which the velocity in the centre is almost 0, with an inward velocity just outside of it, and a large outward velocity at the outer edge, is desirable. However, to promote entrainment, a shape with a large velocity in the centre portion and small velocity at the outer edge, with an overall inward angle, is desirable. To suppress the diffusion of the jet, an optimal initial velocity distribution shape with a large velocity in the centre portion, a small velocity at the outer edge, and an overall inward angle is desirable. Conversely, to promote diffusion, a shape with a large outward velocity at both the centre and outer edges is desirable. It is also indicated that, when the initial velocity distribution of the jet has a special shape, and the relationship between flow rate, centre velocity, and centre temperature that is normally observed in a jet flow may not hold. In other words, by changing the initial velocity distribution, the entrainment and diffusion of the jet can be separated and controlled, which is usually difficult to achieve using conventional engineering methods., Version of Record 12 October 2023

This paper focuses on image sensor communication (ISC) using cameras to receive wireless signals transmitted by visible lights. We summarize the technical principles of ISC from the perspective of transmitting devices. An introduction to the development and applications of ISC was provided, starting with the history of image sensors and visible light communication (VLC). Moreover, the communication mechanism of ISC using complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) sensors is explained in this paper. Specifically, we investigate studies using an optical communication image sensor and the rolling shutter technique for high-speed ISC. Further, we highlight three distinctive transmitting devices in ISC: a LED array, rotating LEDs, and displays, and explain them in terms of structure and signal transmission methods. In particular, we present the parallel transmission of LED arrays and their application in traffic systems and introduce an optical flow-based signal transmission method using rotating LEDs. In addition, two visual transmission techniques in displays-based-ISC using brightness-difference and high-frequency flashing are introduced, respectively. This paper intuitively explains these ISC techniques and reveals ISC’s high versatility.

Dry ice has been proposed as a propellant for electric propulsion, as its use may facilitate the realization of a low-cost propulsion system compared to that based on a xenon propellant. In addition, dry ice can be obtained from space (e.g., from the atmosphere of Mars) and human exhalation. This study thus conducted experiments with dry ice storage and carbon dioxide gas supply using triple-point storage. With this method, a constant tank pressure and flow rate was achieved without the application of regulators or control valves. However, the triple-point state was unexpectedly halted, even though solid dry ice remained in the tank. An internal visual observation revealed that the solid phase was surrounded by the liquid phase, which prevented the solid phase from melting. Therefore, heat conduction fins were installed in the tank to enhance the melting process, which successfully extended the triple-point duration. The supply system was applied successfully to the operation of a 1 kW Hall thruster. Furthermore, a mathematical model for estimating the phase characteristics in the tank was developed, with an in-orbit operation analyzed based on the experimental results. The heat input to the tank and the mass flow rate or enthalpy to the thruster determined the phase characteristics in the tank, which means that implementing a thermal design that considers the flow rate to the thruster is crucial. The simulation demonstrated that dry ice can be consumed by controlling the three phases in the tank using an electrical heater. A gas phase separator concept consisting of the heat conduction fins and capillary screen mesh was proposed for orbital microgravity operation.

A 100-W class low power arcjet thruster using a hollow cathode was proposed, with the goal of reducing cathode erosion. The hollow cathode's emitter was lanthanum hexaboride expecting its excellent thermionic emission performance. The experiment used argon as a propellant and compared two different emitter lengths. The estimated emitter temperature was almost the same regardless of the emitter length, however, due to of the efficient heat exchange with the longer arc plasma region, the longer emitter provided better performance with higher discharge voltage. Additionally, the hollow cathode was compared to the conventional rod cathode, and the hollow cathode was found to have some advantages. The specific impulse of the hollow cathodes was higher than that of the rod cathode at low flow rate. The results showed that the hollow cathode is best for high specific power and high specific impulse operation. The unstable transition between low- and high-voltage modes has been observed in the rod cathode, but not in the hollow cathode configurations. Helium was put to the test as a propellant and compared to argon for simulate the future use of hydrogen as a propellant. The thrust efficiency was lower due to the high discharge voltage and significant heat loss, but the specific impulse was higher as expected. No severe recession or erosion of the emitter was observed after the test campaign, but some surface color change was seen which may affect in the long-term operation.

The effects of temperature (750–1300 °C) and gasifying agents (CO2, H2O, and their mixture) on the gasification characteristics of biomass char (biochar) were experimentally studied using a batch-type vertical tube furnace. It was found that gasification behaviors in the atmospheres of CO2, H2O, and their mixture could be classified into two regimes: chemical reaction control and diffusion control. In addition, a mechanism transition phenomenon from additive mechanism to competitive mechanism was observed in the chemical reaction control regime. The syngas results indicated that in the competitive mechanism, both the char-CO2 reaction and char-H2O reaction were inhibited. Based on these results, an assumption of char active sites was proposed to explain the mechanism transition. It appears that the transition is mainly caused by insufficient char active sites, resulting in CO2 and H2O molecules competing for the limited shared active sites. Furthermore, it was observed that in the competitive mechanism, there is no obvious priority for accessing the shared active sites when both CO2 and H2O are present.

Description of the elongational rheology of concentrated polymers appears to require that in fast flows the friction coefficient decreases with respect to its equilibrium value. However, the proposed models typically maintain the validity of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) out of equilibrium. On the other hand, FDT is routed in local equilibrium, the latter being clearly violated by the flow-induced monomer coalignment that induces friction change. A recent analysis by Watanabe et al. [Macromolecules, 54, 3700 (2021)] of unentangled polystyrene (PS) melts, based on a nonlinear extension of the Rouse model, indicates that FDT is indeed violated in fast flows. According to their analysis, the Brownian force intensity remains almost independent of the flow rate, even though the friction coefficient drastically decreases. A different violation of FDT is shown by previous nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of PS oligomers [Ianniruberto et al., Macromolecules, 45, 8058 (2012)] where the diffusion coefficient grows more than the inverse friction coefficient. In this paper, Brownian simulations using a multi-chain sliplink model (the so-called primitive chain network model) are reported for two monodisperse entangled PS melts, for which nonlinear shear and elongational data were published. Two different friction reduction models are examined, and the effect of switching FDT on and off is tested. Results demonstrate that, irrespective of FDT, both friction models can reasonably well reproduce the behavior shown by the data. This result lends support to models that retain FDT since its violation appears not to significantly affect predictions of nonlinear rheology.

This study analyzes Japanese university faculty with foreign degrees using data from the School Teacher Survey, covering the academic years 2007–2016. The results demonstrate that the proportion of Japanese faculty with foreign degrees was 2.81% (2016), with a modest increase during the survey period, which is different from previous studies’ predictions. Moreover, the faculty were more likely to be professors, women, specializing in the humanities and social sciences, and working at private universities, especially in metropolitan areas. Multilevel regression analysis also demonstrated that Japanese faculty with foreign degrees have higher ranks than do their counterparts with domestic degrees.

The progressive accumulation of discarded plastic in the environment demands further development of waste management of plastic waste and conversion technologies of such waste to value-added materials. Recently, the conversion of plastic waste to functional materials via chemical recycling has attracted considerable attention. In this report, plastic waste (PET) was utilized for the preparation of a hydrogel-based catalyst via a cross-linking reaction of PET-derived oligo(terephthalamide)s followed by the electroless metallization. The polymeric matrix of PET-derived hydrogel plays multiple roles of (i) an adsorption media for noble metal ions such as Au^3+ and Ag^+, (ii) a reducing agent of Au^3+ and Ag^+ ions to Au^0 and Ag^0, and (iii) a matrix for the controlled growth of Au and Ag nanoparticles (AuNPs and AgNPs). The obtained hybrid hydrogels after metallization contained well-dispersed AuNPs and AgNPs of 6.1 ± 3.7 nm or 6.1 ± 1.4 nm size, respectively. The catalytic activities of the hybrid hydrogels with metal nanoparticles were studied in a model system of p-nitrophenol reduction in an aqueous solution. The hybrid materials of both Au@hydrogel and Ag@hydrogel were catalytically active for the reduction of p-nitrophenol, obeying the first-order kinetics. Importantly, the AuNPs or AgNPs in the hydrogel matrix preserved the original catalytic activity after multiple p-nitrophenol reduction reactions, showing a promising reusability of the catalysts. The proposed here approach aims to broaden the scope of conversion routes of plastic waste to value-added materials as well as to develop new types of polymeric matrices for templating and growth of metal nanoparticles for catalytic applications.

The linear relationship between wave amplitude and wave torque based on the boundary element method (BEM) is widely employed for small-amplitude waves. However, linear relationships are unsuitable for bottom-hinged oscillating wave surge converters (OWSCs) under high waves owing to nonlinearities, such as wave overtopping. This paper presents an improved BEM introducing an incident wave amplitude correcting factor to simplify the complex nonlinearities under high regular waves. The correcting factors were calibrated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using OpenFOAM. An Oyster 800-like OWSC was adopted as the study model. A quadratic fitting curve of correcting factor vs. wave height is applicable because the calibrated correcting factors significantly correlate with wave heights but are almost irrelevant to wave periods. Though the time–history responses differ in BEM and CFD under high waves, BEM-based time-averaged results show good accuracy and high computational efficiency, such as equivalent pitch amplitude and capture width ratio (CWR). At mid-low periods, simultaneously varying power take-off (PTO) stiffness and damping than solely varying PTO damping, significantly increases CWR, especially under low waves. The capturing power under high waves substantially increases because of pitch motion amplification. At long periods, adjusting PTO inertia produces negligible efficiency improvement even with amplified oscillation.

Twinned structure of metal nanoparticles can strongly affect catalysis because of its unique atomic alignment and bond strain in metal nanoparticles. Here, the twin and single crystal structures of supported Ag nanoparticles are controlled reversibly by gas treatment. The single crystal Ag nanoparticles were formed in Ag/Al2O3 by H2 treatment, and subsequent CO gas treatment changed the Ag particle structure to twin. The change in the Ag particle structure from single to twin caused enhancement of CO oxidation activity. In addition, the catalytic activity was reversibly changed from low to high by applying H2 and CO gas treatment to Ag/Al2O3. The kinetic analysis for CO oxidation revealed that the twin Ag nanoparticles have stronger CO adsorption energy than the single crystal ones, which is responsible for the enhanced CO oxidation activity of twin Ag nanoparticles.

Purpose: The research aims to understand the co-existence of nimbleness and resilience in a continuous digital transformation, along with the dynamic capabilities needed to balance the challenges of their co-existence. Methodology: The current study draws on Dialogical Action Design Research (D-ADR) to investigate interactions among practitioners and executives. Data is collected from a major Australian Financial Services Organisation (FSO) and many international experts. Findings: The study presents a framework, the Continuous Transformation Model (CTM), to describe digital transformation within an FSO context, emphasizing nimbleness and resilience as its foundational pillars. This framework facilitates the identification of the critical role of organisational capabilities in managing continuous digital transformation, supported by dynamic IT capabilities. More importantly, the findings underscore how these capabilities enable managers to effectively balance the coexistence of nimbleness and resilience. Research implications: The CTM contributes to the enterprise information systems literature by offering a coherent understanding of balancing resilience and nimbleness to succeed in digital transformation. In particular, the research model elucidates the relationship between dynamic capabilities and continuous digital transformations. Practical implications: Digital transformations are not a one-off exercise. Managers in the FSO context must cultivate their organisational capabilities to achieve nimbleness and resilience during their digital transformation journey. Originality: The relationship between dynamic capabilities and continuous digital transformation sheds light on establishing successful management processes within FSOs.

This article is devoted to the analysis of fixed-time (FXT) and preassigned-time (PAT) output synchronization for T–S fuzzy complex networks (CNs). Firstly, to improve transmission efficiency of information, a kind of pure power-law control strategy with logarithmic quantization is designed and the power-law terms have only one free parameter. Then, by applying FXT stability theorem as well as inequality skills, some compact criteria are obtained to achieve FXT output synchronization of T–S fuzzy CNs, and the restriction on the output matrix with positive definite and diagonal form is removed. Furthermore, the PAT output synchronization of T–S fuzzy CNs is further explored by developing a quantized control scheme with power-law form. Three numerical examples in the end are given to attest the proposed control design and criteria.

Modularization and standardization have been recognized as an effective way to achieve mass customization and improve efficiency in the house-building industry. The construction industry has witnessed the entry of several bathpod manufacturers using new, digitally enabled business models to alter the traditionally incremental nature of off-site construction. These new players in the market are embracing higher levels of complexity with offerings that deliver value in terms of accelerated speed of construction, simplified design features, and certified quality, often becoming the means of connecting different stakeholders in the construction supply chain. The innovation that bathpod manufacturers are bringing to the construction industry is interesting to examine with a view to their business model. This paper informs and proposes theory by analyzing bathpod companies’ business models from two perspectives: (1) the internal fit between business model components within the company, and (2) and the interactions between the bathpod companies and the external environment (partners and customers). This paper uses a qualitative research approach that incorporates a review of relevant literature, a market scan, and interviews with industry experts. The Business Model Canvas, which includes nine key elements, is employed to identify the interdependencies of bathpod companies that have successfully implemented varying levels of modularization and standardization. This enables the discussion of the archetype business model elements that enabled the theorizing of the archetypes. The paper presents six business model archetypes for bathpod manufacturers, e.g., project-driven production, integrated project service delivery, and modular enthusiast. These archetypes represent viable options for off-site manufacturing and production approaches in construction projects and present emerging business model innovations leading to their current state. Ethical discussions about Artificial Intelligence (AI) often overlook its potentially large impact on nonhuman animals. In a recent commentary on our paper about AI’s possible harms, Leonie Bossert argues for a focus not just on the possible negative impacts but also the possible beneficial outcomes of AI for animals. We welcome this call to increase awareness of AI that helps animals: developing and using AI to improve animal wellbeing and promote positive dimensions in animal lives should be a vital ethical goal. Nonetheless, we argue that there is some value in focusing on technology-based harms in the context of AI ethics and policy discourses. A harms framework for AI can inform some of our strongest duties to animals and inform regulation and risk assessment impacts designed to prevent serious harms to humans, the environment, and animals.

This paper introduces a viscous vortex model for predicting the optimal drag reduction of riblet surfaces, eliminating the need for expensive direct numerical simulations (DNSs) or experiments. The footprint of a typical quasi-streamwise vortex, in terms of the spanwise and wall-normal velocities, is extracted from smooth-wall DNS flow fields in close proximity to the surface. The extracted velocities are then averaged and used as boundary conditions in a Stokes-flow problem, wherein riblets with various cross-sectional shapes are embedded. Here, the same smooth-wall-based boundary conditions can be used for riblets, as we observe from the DNSs that the quasi-streamwise vortices remain unmodified apart from an offset. In particular, the position of these vortices remain unpinned above small riblets. The present approach is compared with the protrusion-height model of Luchini et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 228, 1991, pp. 87–109), which is also based on a Stokes calculation, but represents the vortex with only a uniform spanwise velocity boundary condition. The key novelty of the present model is the introduction of a wall-normal velocity component into the boundary condition, thus inducing transpiration at the riblet crests, which becomes relevant as the riblet size increases. Consequently, the present model allows for the drag-reduction prediction of riblets up to the optimal size. The present approach does not rely on the scale separation formally required by homogenisation techniques, which are only applicable for vanishingly small riblets.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) - the ability of microorganisms to adapt and survive under diverse chemical selection pressures - is influenced by complex interactions between humans, companion and food-producing animals, wildlife, insects and the environment. To understand and manage the threat posed to health (human, animal, plant and environmental) and security (food and water security and biosecurity), a multifaceted 'One Health' approach to AMR surveillance is required. Genomic technologies have enabled monitoring of the mobilization, persistence and abundance of AMR genes and mutations within and between microbial populations. Their adoption has also allowed source-tracing of AMR pathogens and modelling of AMR evolution and transmission. Here, we highlight recent advances in genomic AMR surveillance and the relative strengths of different technologies for AMR surveillance and research. We showcase recent insights derived from One Health genomic surveillance and consider the challenges to broader adoption both in developed and in lower- and middle-income countries.

Lymphoglandular complexes are components of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue that are characterized by submucosal lymphoid aggregates invested by projections of mucosal epithelium. Reports of pathology involving these structures are rare in both human and veterinary literature. Here, the authors report 2 cases of rectal masses excised from dogs following a period of tenesmus and hematochezia. In both animals, the masses were composed of lymphoid tissue closely encompassing tubuloacinar structures. Immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction antigen receptor rearrangement testing demonstrated that the lymphoid population was polyclonal, comprising T and B cells arranged in loosely follicular aggregates centered on the epithelial foci. In light of these findings, a diagnosis of lymphoglandular complex nodular hyperplasia was reported. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of this condition in dogs.

Grape marc is a waste product produced during the winemaking process. The enormous volume of wine production worldwide creates a significant amount of grape marc each year. It is rich in nutrients and has excellent antioxidant properties. Lactic acid fermentation is a popular food preparation method, and by using grape marc as a substrate for fermentation, the pomace is preserved and the health benefits are improved, thus being a potentially valuable method that allows efficient management of pomace. This review describes the nutritional value of grape marc, the conditions necessary to ferment grape marc using lactic acid bacteria, and the characteristic chemical changes that occur during fermentation. Furthermore, it describes the research prospects for producing novel functional foods or products by interacting strains with phytochemicals in grape marc. More research is needed to optimize the use of starter cultures, improve fermentation efficiency, and develop sustainable processes.

The multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria has evolved into a worldwide threat to human health; over recent decades, polymyxins have re-emerged in clinical practice due to their high activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Nevertheless, the nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity of polymyxins seriously hinder their practical use in the clinic. Based on the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), analogue design is an efficient strategy for discovering biologically active compounds with fewer adverse effects. To accelerate the polymyxin analogues discovery process and find the polymyxin analogues with high antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, here we developed PmxPred, a GCN and catBoost-based machine learning framework. The RDKit descriptors were used for the molecule and residues representation, and the ensemble learning model was utilized for the antimicrobial activity prediction. This framework was trained and evaluated on multiple Gram-negative bacteria datasets, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and a general Gram-negative bacteria dataset achieving an AUROC of 0.857, 0.880, 0.756, 0.895 and 0.865 on the independent test, respectively. PmxPred outperformed the transfer learning method that trained on 10 million molecules. We interpreted our model well-trained model by analysing the importance of global and residue features. Overall, PmxPred provides a powerful additional tool for predicting active polymyxin analogues, and holds the potential elucidate the mechanisms underlying the antimicrobial activity of polymyxins. Because neural processing takes time, the brain only has delayed access to sensory information. When localising moving objects this is problematic, as an object will have moved on by the time its position has been determined. Here, we consider predictive motion extrapolation as a fundamental delay-compensation strategy. From a population-coding perspective, we outline how extrapolation can be achieved by a forwards shift in the population-level activity distribution. We identify general mechanisms underlying such shifts, involving various asymmetries which facilitate the targeted ‘enhancement’ and/or ‘dampening’ of population-level activity. We classify these on the basis of their potential implementation (intra- vs inter-regional processes) and consider specific examples in different visual regions. We consider how motion extrapolation can be achieved during inter-regional signaling, and how asymmetric connectivity patterns which support extrapolation can emerge spontaneously from local synaptic learning rules. Finally, we consider how more abstract ‘model-based’ predictive strategies might be implemented. Overall, we present an integrative framework for understanding how the brain determines the real-time position of moving objects, despite neural delays.

Fifth-generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC) systems have the potential to provide simultaneous heating and cooling, allowing for energy exchange between users with different needs. However, their viability in mild climates with a higher share of cooling demand remains unclear. In this paper, we propose a framework for assessing the engineering, economic and environmental performance of a 5GDHC system compared to a state-of-the-art business-as-usual solution and demonstrate it through a practical case study for a university campus in Melbourne, Australia. When accessible heat sources and sinks are available, the 5GDHC system provides a cost-effective solution, with annual cost savings between 9 and 29 % and GHG emissions reduction between 25 and 58 % compared to an already advanced business-as-usual system. Additionally, by using peak off-peak tariffs and an hourly emission factor for the electricity consumed, we demonstrate the 5GDHC operational flexibility in pursuing different objectives, such as minimising cost or emissions, respectively. The results suggest that 5GDHC systems are an economically and environmentally viable solution in milder climates, and a successful implementation of 5GDHC in Australia can create new market opportunities and pave the way for its adoption in other countries with similar climatic conditions and no established history of district heating systems.

AIMS: Heart failure (HF) nurse practitioners (NPs) are an important part of the HF specialist team, and their impact on the cost-effectiveness of their role is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the cost-effectiveness of a HF NP inpatient service compared with current practice of no HF NP service from a health system perspective at 12 months and 3 years. METHODS AND RESULTS: We developed a Markov model to estimate costs, effects, and cost-effectiveness for hospitalized HF patients and seen by a HF NP service compared with usual care at 12 months and 3 years. Costs and effects were taken from a retrospective observational cohort study. Transition probabilities and utilities were derived from published studies. A total of 500 patients were included (250 patients in the HF NP service vs. 250 patients in usual care). Average age was 77.7 ± 11 years, and 54% were male. At 12 months, the HF NP group was cheaper and more effective compared with no HF NP [$23 031 vs. $25 111 (AUD), respectively; quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were 0.68 in HF NP group compared with 0.66 in usual care]. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio showed a savings of $109 474 per QALY gained at 12 months and a savings of $270 667 per QALY gained at 3 years in favour of the HF NP service. CONCLUSION: The HF NP service was cost-effective with lower costs and higher QALYs compared with no HF NP service. Economic evaluations alongside randomized controlled trials are warranted.

Objective: International guidelines support a repertoire of therapeutic interventions that may assist recovery following concussion. We aimed to systematically review the efficacy of early pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions initiated within two weeks of injury on symptoms and functional recovery of adults with concussion. Methods ; We conducted a Systematic Review (SR) of Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) without meta-analysis utilising the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed of four databases. Study inclusion criteria were adult participants diagnosed with concussion and commencing active intervention within 14 days of injury. Results and conclusions: Of 7531 studies identified, 11 were included in the final review. Six studies were rated as high-risk of bias, three with some concerns and two as low-risk of bias. We found no evidence to support specific pharmacotherapeutic management to hasten the natural recovery time-course. Two studies reported significant improvement in selected concussion symptoms following manual therapy (at 48–72 hours post-treatment) or telephone counselling interventions (at 6 months post-injury). No high quality RCTs demonstrate superior effects of early therapeutic interventions on concussion recovery in the first 2 weeks. We advocate future research to examine impacts of health-clinician contact points aligned with symptom-specific interventions.

RATIONALE: Fatigue affects almost half of all people living with stroke. Stroke survivors rank understanding fatigue and how to reduce it as one of the highest research priorities. METHODS: We convened an interdisciplinary, international group of clinical and pre-clinical researchers and lived experience experts. We identified four priority areas: (1) best measurement tools for research, (2) clinical identification of fatigue and potentially modifiable causes, (3) promising interventions and recommendations for future trials, and (4) possible biological mechanisms of fatigue. Cross-cutting themes were aphasia and the voice of people with lived experience. Working parties were formed and structured consensus building processes were followed. RESULTS: We present 20 recommendations covering outcome measures for research, development, and testing of new interventions and priority areas for future research on the biology of post-stroke fatigue. We developed and recommend the use of the Stroke Fatigue Clinical Assessment Tool. CONCLUSIONS: By synthesizing current knowledge in post-stroke fatigue across clinical and pre-clinical fields, our work provides a roadmap for future research into post-stroke fatigue.

The 22 September 2021 (AEST) MW 5.9 Woods Point earthquake occurred in an intraplate setting (southeast Australia) approximately 130 km East Northeast of the central business district of Melbourne (pop. ∼5.15 million). A lack of seismic instrumentation and a low population density in the epicentral region resulted in a dearth of near-source instrumental and “felt” report intensity data, limiting evaluation of the near-source performance of ground motion models (GMMs). To address this challenge, we first surveyed unreinforced masonry chimneys following the earthquake to establish damage states and develop fragility curves. Using Bayesian inference, and including pre-earthquake GMM weightings as Bayesian priors, we evaluate the relative performance of GMMs in predicting chimney observations for different fragility functions and seismic velocity profiles. At the most likely VS30 (760 m/s), the best performing models are AB06, A12, and CY08SWISS. GMMs that were preferentially selected for utility in the Australian National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHA18) prior to the Woods Point earthquake outperform other GMMs. The recently developed NGA-East GMM performs relatively well in the more distal region (e.g. >50 km) but is among the poorest performing GMMs in the near-source region across the range of VS30. Our new method of combining analysis of engineered features (chimneys) with Bayesian inference to evaluate the near-source performance of GMMs may have applicability in diverse settings worldwide, particularly in areas of sparse seismic instrumentation.

Social functioning of children with experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) between caregivers in early childhood has received less attention than emotional-behavioral outcomes. Drawing on data from 1507 ten-year-old Australian-born children and their mothers participating in a community-based longitudinal study, this study examined the associations between IPV exposure during infancy and social development during middle childhood. IPV during the first 12 months of life was associated with lower social skills, higher peer problems, and peer victimization at age 10 years, while accounting for concurrent IPV. This study provides evidence for the long-term impacts of early-life IPV exposure on children's social functioning, and the importance of prevention and early intervention programs focused on social development following experiences of IPV.

Reporting a measurement procedure and its analytical performance following method evaluation in a peer-reviewed journal is an important means for clinical laboratory practitioners to share their findings. It also represents an important source of evidence base to help others make informed decisions about their practice. At present, there are significant variations in the information reported in laboratory medicine journal publications describing the analytical performance of measurement procedures. These variations also challenge authors, readers, reviewers and editors in deciding the quality of a submitted manuscript. The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Working Group on Method Evaluation Protocols (IFCC WG-MEP) developed a checklist and recommends its adoption to enable a consistent approach to reporting method evaluation and analytical performance characteristics of measurement procedures in laboratory medicine journals. It is envisioned that the LEAP checklist will improve the standardisation of journal publications describing method evaluation and analytical performance characteristics, improving the quality of the evidence base that is relied upon by practitioners.

There have been significant advances in the prevention and management of Ebola virus disease (EVD) caused by Zaire Ebola virus (ZEBOV), including the development of two effective vaccines, rVSV-ZEBOV and Ad26.ZEBOV/MVA-BN-Filo. In addition, ZEBOV monoclonal antibodies have become first-line therapy for EVD. However, the 2022-23 outbreak of Sudan Ebola virus (SUDV) in Uganda has highlighted the gap in current therapies and vaccines, whose efficacy is uncertain against non-ZEBOV species. Health-care and laboratory staff working in EVD treatment centres or Ebola virus diagnostic and research laboratories face unique risks relating to potential occupational exposure to Ebola viruses. Given the substantial morbidity and mortality associated with EVD, facilities should have strategies in place to manage occupational exposures, including consideration of post-exposure therapies. In this Review, we discuss currently available evidence for prevention and post-exposure prophylaxis of EVD, including therapies currently under evaluation for SUDV.

Control comparator selection is a critical trial design issue. Preclinical and clinical investigators who are doing trials of stroke recovery and rehabilitation interventions must carefully consider the appropriateness and relevance of their chosen control comparator as the benefit of an experimental intervention is established relative to a comparator. Establishing a strong rationale for a selected comparator improves the integrity of the trial and validity of its findings. This Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtable (SRRR) taskforce used a graph theory voting system to rank the importance and ease of addressing challenges during control comparator design. "Identifying appropriate type of control" was ranked easy to address and very important, "variability in usual care" was ranked hard to address and of low importance, and "understanding the content of the control and how it differs from the experimental intervention" was ranked very important but not easy to address. The CONtrol DeSIGN (CONSIGN) decision support tool was developed to address the identified challenges and enhance comparator selection, description, and reporting. CONSIGN is a web-based tool inclusive of seven steps that guide the user through control comparator design. The tool was refined through multiple rounds of pilot testing that included more than 130 people working in neurorehabilitation research. Four hypothetical exemplar trials, which span preclinical, mood, aphasia, and motor recovery, demonstrate how the tool can be applied in practice. Six consensus recommendations are defined that span research domains, professional disciplines, and international borders.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a surge in anti-Chinese sentiment emerged as a pressing issue, with debates on how the pandemic exacerbated such sentiments. To explore this intricate relationship, we conducted two survey experiments, incorporating COVID-specific contextual inquiries in Australia and the United States during two phases (8–21 June 2021 and 28 July-12 August 2022). Our findings reveal that individuals’ perceptions of the Chinese diaspora remained unaltered when presented with information regarding the Chinese government’s initial management of COVID-19. However, when exposed to a message suggesting the Chinese government’s influence over overseas Chinese communities, people’s attitudes towards the Chinese diaspora significantly deteriorated. In addition, Australian respondents demonstrated heightened sensitivity to perceived foreign interference from China compared to their American counterparts. Our study underscores the role of suspicions and apprehensions surrounding China-related foreign interference in shaping anti-Chinese sentiment in the Western context.
