The selected case studies are two of the biggest UE countries, among the first affected by a high incidence of COVID-19 cases, namely Italy and Germany. Findings: The authors found sizeable regional differences in COVID-19 mortality rates within each of the analysed countries, and the stress borne by local healthcare systems seems to be the most powerful factor in explaining them. In line with other studies, the authors found additional factors of influence, such as age distribution, gender ratio, population density and regional development. Originality/value: This research clearly indicated that COVID-19 related deaths are strongly associated with the degree of resilience of the local healthcare systems. But it must never be at the expense of thoughtful and safe planning. On the administrative and clerical side of healthcare, we have been using rudimentary AI to automate tasks and relieve the rapidly growing paper-pushing load of both clinicians and clerics. Handling huge amounts of data and performing tedious tasks with AI is proving successful on the clinical side. Already, AI is helping doctors sift through diagnostic data, including image analysis in CT scans and x-rays. Subtle signs of cardiovascular disease can be detected with AI, allowing for intervention and treatment to start earlier. Cleveland Clinic is using AI to identify and combat sepsis in patients at early stages, resulting in a 40% improvement in outcomes. AI is finding success in areas as diverse as population-health management and enhancing telemedicine capabilities. The more skeptical worry about the speed at which AI tools and procedures are developing. AI requires an even greater amount of digital information to be stored and transmitted between various entities. Data security is already one of the greatest challenges in healthcare. Other concerns include the potential for trained professionals to be lulled into a less vigilant mindset, and early indications that underlying biases of programmers have been transmitted into AI algorithms, threatening healthcare equity. Efforts and multiple initiatives are already underway to assure that we develop ethics and regulations for how AI is used, that we determine sufficient reliability standards, and, most importantly, that we reach and maintain the level of human involvement needed to assure ethical, safe care for patients. Since the emergence of evidence-based design in the 1990s, much has been written about the role of systematically produced research for improving the quality of healthcare facilities. There has been comparatively little discussion, however, regarding the extent to which evidence may be seen to minimise a range of risks traditionally mitigated through the expertise of the architect. Drawing on our own fieldwork alongside relevant secondary literatures, this paper examines the effects of evidence on perceptions of architectural competency within healthcare procurement. While the availability of design-related evidence was not always observed to alter a design approach it did engender more profound forms of communication between stakeholders, enabling more meaningful interactions between the value orientations those stakeholders represent. In this way, we argue, the emergence of evidence-based design is less a challenge to the professional competency of the architect than a tool for validating this competency, couched in terms that stakeholders from other disciplines customarily recognise.
