Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impacts on maternal mental health. We explored the lived experiences of women with perinatal depression and anxiety to elucidate their perceptions of how the pandemic influenced their mental health and access to care. Methods: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews. From March to October 2021, purposive sampling was used to recruit a socio-demographically diverse sample of women with self-reported perinatal depression or anxiety who were pregnant or within one year postpartum between March 2020 and October 2021. Interviews were conducted remotely and thematically analyzed. Results: Fourteen women were interviewed. Three major themes arose. Theme 1, Negative impacts of COVID-19 on symptoms of depression and anxiety, described how the pandemic magnified underlying symptoms of depression and anxiety, increased social isolation, generated anxiety due to fears of COVID-19 infection, and caused economic stress. In theme 2, Negative impacts of COVID-19 on access to and quality of health care, women described stressful and isolating delivery experiences, negative psychological impact of partners not being able to participate in their perinatal health care, interruptions and barriers to mental health treatment, and challenges in using telehealth services for mental health care. Theme 3, Positive impacts of COVID-19 on mental health, identified advantages of increased telehealth access and ability to work and study from home. Conclusions for Practice: The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected women with perinatal depression and anxiety by magnifying underlying symptoms, increasing stress and social isolation, and disrupting access to mental health care. Findings provide support for policies and interventions to prevent and address social isolation, as well as optimization of telehealth services to prevent and address gaps in perinatal mental health treatment. Significance: What is Already Known on this Subject? Quantitative data suggest that the pandemic increased rates of perinatal mental illness. Yet the perspectives of women with perinatal depression and anxiety on how the pandemic affected their mental health and access to care remain underreported. What this Study adds? This paper offers new insight from the lived experience of women with perinatal depression and anxiety on ways the pandemic negatively and positively affected their mental health and access to mental health care. Objectives: Human milk expression has become an increasingly common means for providing milk to an infant, with women expressing to address breastfeeding problems or to allow for flexible feeding options. This study explored the experiences and recommendations of mothers who expressed human milk, with this paper reporting on the advice mothers would offer to other mothers to address common challenges. Methods: Interpretive description was used in this qualitative project. Using purposive sampling, mothers of infants aged 0–24 months who expressed human milk were recruited to participate from two health regions in western Canada. Individual, audio-taped interviews were completed with 35 women. NVIVO™ software was used for data analysis. Results: Mothers reported the desire to offer experiential advice to other mothers navigating milk expression and encouraged other mothers to seek guidance from health care professionals such as lactation consultants, peer support online, and from family and friends. Experiential knowledge shared included: (a) product recommendations, (b) expression tips, (c) support for workplace expression, (d) encouragement to seek help, and (e) moral support. Conclusions: Healthcare professionals should include evidence-based expression information as part of routine lactation support, while recognizing the importance of mother-to-mother knowledge transfer and emotional support. Services that assist mothers to determine and access pumps appropriate to their unique breastfeeding needs and goals should be offered, and the opportunity for peer support through creation of, or referral to, appropriate in-person or online support groups should be made available. In the context of the VASelfCare project, we developed an application prototype of an intelligent anthropomorphic virtual assistant. Designed as a relational agent, the virtual assistant has the role of supporting older people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2D) in medication adherence and lifestyle changes. Our paper has two goals: describing the essentials of this prototype, and reporting on usability evaluation. We describe the general architecture of the prototype, including the graphical component, and focus on its main feature: the incorporation, in the way the dialogue flows, of Behavior Change Techniques, identified through a theoretical framework, the Behaviour Change Wheel. Usability was experimentally evaluated in field tests in a purposive sample of 20 participants (11 older adults with T2D and 9 experts). The Portuguese version of the System Usability Scale was employed, supplemented with qualitative data from open questions, diaries, digital notes and telephone follow-ups. The aggregated mean SUS score was 73,75 (SD 13,31), which corresponds to a borderline rating of excellent. Textual data were content analyzed and will be prioritized to further improve usability. This paper explores the dynamics of caregiver rejection experienced by 40 homeless young adults 19-21 years of age. Using qualitative interviews, our findings reveal that nearly all of the youth reported at least one type of familial rejection that was intertwined with wider household conflict, and several youth experienced multiple types of rejection. Many young people reported 'feeling like an outsider,' as they felt marginalized by family members and perceived a sense of outsiderness within their family networks. Some youth cited rejection when they were 'betrayed by a primary caregiver for a significant other.' These intimate partners, such as a boyfriend, girlfriend or stepparent, often abused the young person, which exacerbated their experiences with caregiver rejection. Numerous youth were 'pushed into institutional living,' such as foster care or group homes, at the behest of their primary caregivers, which stemmed from familial discord and behavioral issues on the part of the young person. In the most explicit form of rejection, youth were 'kicked out by a caregiver' and subsequently entered into street life when they had nowhere else to go. This paper explores the bioethical issues associated with the diagnosis and treatment of vulvar cancer for Indigenous women in East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. Based on a qualitative study of a vulvar cancer cluster of Indigenous women, the article highlights four main topics of bioethical concern drawn from the findings: informed consent, removal of body parts, pain management, and issues at the interface of Indigenous and Western health care. The construct of familismo has been identified as a potential protective cultural value in Hispanic cultures. This paper considers familismo and alcohol use among young people in Mexico. We conducted a qualitative study using ethnographic open ended interviews with 117 first year students at a large free public university in Mexico City between April-May 2011. The findings indicate that dimensions of familismo can act as protective factors against misuse of alcohol among Mexican youths and may be protective for moderate drinking. Future research should explore the relationship of familismo to gender roles and other cultural values during adolescence. Given the enduring influence of Mexican cultural values among Mexican-Americans the research has implications for prevention programs for both Mexican and Mexican-American youths. Literature indicates a knowledge gap in the preparedness of teachers to deliver sexuality and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention education to learners with intellectual disabilities in Africa. This paper reports on teachers' opinions on sexuality of Nigerian learners with intellectual disabilities and awareness of their risk of HIV infection. The study utilized key informant interviews with 12 teachers to explore their views on the sexuality and risk of HIV exposure of learners with intellectual disabilities in special schools across Oyo State, Nigeria. Interview scripts were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Teachers considered learners with intellectual disabilities as 'hypersexual' and incapable of intimate relationships. Learners with intellectual disabilities were reported to be at risk of exposure to HIV infection due to sexual abuse, transactional sex and lack of sexuality and HIV education. Teachers expressed confidence to deliver sexuality and HIV education but lacked skills to communicate relevant information to learners with intellectual disabilities in accessible formats. Teachers' negative attitudes, misconception and lack of skills to deliver sexuality education to learners with intellectual disabilities have to be addressed through training. Further studies are needed to provide baseline information for developing a tailored sexuality and HIV education for Nigerian learners with different types of disabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Health care in prison and particularly the health care of older prisoners are increasingly important topics due to the growth of the ageing prisoner population. The aim of this paper is to gain insight into the approaches used in the provision of equivalent health care to ageing prisoners and to confront the intuitive definition of equivalent care and the practical and ethical challenges that have been experienced by individuals working in this field. Forty interviews took place with experts working in the prison setting from three Western European countries to discover their views on prison health care. Experts indicated that the provision of equivalent care in prison is difficult mostly due to four factors: variability of care in different prisons, gatekeeper systems, lack of personnel, and delays in providing access. The use of religion and spirituality in psychotherapy has been a contentious issue for decades. This paper explores and describes whether psychologists would use religion and spirituality in psychotherapy as well as enablers and barriers in this regard. A qualitative exploratory descriptive method was followed using purposive sampling to obtain a sample of clinical and counselling psychologists. The focus group strategy was used to collect the data, and Tesch's model of content analysis was used to analyse the qualitative findings. Most participants expressed a willingness to discuss religion and spirituality with their clients. Participants also highlighted specific enablers and barriers to incorporating religion and spirituality in psychotherapy. The Canadian government's plan to support a balanced distribution of immigrants throughout the nation has contributed to newcomers' dispersion to small town communities and rural areas. However, very little work has examined the health experiences of immigrants settling in smaller urban and rural regions. Even less literature exists on the perspectives of service providers working with newcomers in Canada's urban-rural communities. This paper focuses on a part of a larger Community-based study on 'Newcomer Settlement and Integration in Education, Training, Employment, Health and Social Support' in Brantford-a middle-sized urban/rural region in Ontario, Canada-and discusses the findings in the health domain. Data were generated from 212 service providers and 237 newcomers using both qualitative and quantitative research tools. Newcomers identified several barriers in accessing mental and/or physical health services including lack of culturally appropriate services and discrimination. The striking differences between newcomers' and service providers' responses to the survey questionnaires bring to light cultural variations between the newcomers' and the service providers' perceptions of 'health'. Much research has focused on value transmission among Latin American immigrants in North America. However, most of this literature does not differentiate among Latin Americans from diverse backgrounds or among those living in different country contexts. Salvadorians are a relatively new immigrant group to Canada whose value transmission process is understudied. This article reports the findings of a qualitative study that examined which values Salvadorian mothers and their daughters considered important to maintain or modify within Canada's multicultural society. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with 16 mothers and one daughter of each mother (8 adolescent daughters and 8 adult daughters). All 32 participants lived in a mid-sized city in southeastern Ontario. The analysis was based on grounded theory, and female chastity emerged as a core value that respondents wanted to maintain, while values such as respect and obedience were being transformed. This paper aims to understand how professionals view non-offending mothers in cases of incest. Its data is based on a larger qualitative research project with 98 professionals in Turkey, including both frontline workers and those who join the process after the disclosure of abuse and are contacted professionally in incest cases. In spite of the differences in their views, the interviewed professionals have acknowledged the critical role of the mother in various phases of incest from disclosure of abuse to the treatment of the victim. However, they have also pointed out the insufficiencies and ambivalences of the mothers in terms of dealing properly with incest by underlining their economic and social vulnerability. The results reflected that the mothers need to be perceived in another light, understood better and empowered according to their needs to become vital partners within the support system combating incestuous abuse. Home country re-entry from cross-cultural missionary work abroad may be associated with psychological distress. Re-entrants experience multiple losses including loss of identity which may be associated with personal/relational identity gaps and depersonalization/dehumanization. However, research suggests that some re-entrants are resilient with good mental health, while others are fragile with poor mental health. The aims of this paper are to explore the nature and frequency of re-entering missionaries' identity gaps and their depersonalization/dehumanization in resilient and fragile re-entrants. Fifteen re-entering adult Australian cross-cultural missionary workers from four interdenominational Australian mission organizations completed semi-structured interviews. Results were analysed using modified Consensual Qualitative Research methods. Links were established between personal/relational identity gaps, depersonalization/dehumanization and resilience on re-entry. This study was designed to examine women's experiences of weight loss during the postpartum period. Understanding women's positive and negative experiences can assist health care providers to successfully intervene in helping women lose weight following pregnancy and avoid long-term weight gain and obesity development. Design: Phenomenology, according to Husserl's perspective. Setting: Private location of the women's choosing. Participants: Twenty-six women, who ranged in age from 25 to 35 years, and had given birth within the last 5 years, were interviewed regarding their experiences with postpartum weight loss. The majority of the sample was Caucasian. Interviews were transcribed and themes were identified from each of the interviews. Comparisons were made between interviews to identify common experiences between women. Data were analyzed according to the Giorgi method. The women in the study had a wide range of experiences. Themes that emerged from the interviews related to women's challenges with return to prepregnancy weight. These included: time and motivation issues, the need for support, and weight and other struggles. This study provides a look inside the lives of women faced with the reality of losing weight after childbirth. Losing weight after delivery is multi-faceted and influenced by many factors. Interventions to assist women with weight loss should target the challenges described in this paper. When effective strategies are developed, education can be done during pregnancy to prepare for the postpartum period. Ultimately, future research efforts can help us to eliminate pregnancy as a risk factor for obesity in women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
