Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to discuss the light scattering of nonspherical particles that is very important for the research on the aerosol optical properties. Design/methodology/approach -- In this paper, the authors use the spheroid model as the characteristic particle shape to study the single scattering albedo of real nonspherical particles. Meanwhile, the extinction and scattering cross section of spheroids are calculated with the T matrix method combined with the improved geometric optics approximation method (IGOM). Findings -- Through this combination, the extinction and scattering cross section of spheroids can be obtained in the larger size range and aspect ratio range. Furthermore, the comparison of the single scattering albedo for the spheroids and their equivalent spheres is conducted in order to investigate the difference of the spherical and nonspherical particles. Originality/value -- Simulation experiments indicate that the single scattering albedo of spheroids can be calculated well with this combination, and it has some obvious influence on the variation of the aspect ratio, incident wavelength, and complex refractive index of spheroid particles. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the complex aerosol dynamic processes by using this newly developed stochastically weighted operator splitting Monte Carlo (SWOSMC) method.Design/methodology/approach Stochastically weighted particle method and operator splitting method are coupled to formulate the SWOSMC method for the numerical simulation of particle-fluid systems undergoing the complex simultaneous processes.Findings This SWOSMC method is first validated by comparing its numerical simulation results of constant rate coagulation and linear rate condensation with the corresponding analytical solutions. Coagulation and nucleation cases are further studied whose results are compared with the sectional method in excellent agreement. This SWOSMC method has also demonstrated its high numerical simulation capability when used to deal with simultaneous aerosol dynamic processes including coagulation, nucleation and condensation.Originality/value There always exists conflict and tradeoffs between computational cost and accuracy for Monte Carlo-based methods for the numerical simulation of aerosol dynamics. The operator splitting method has been widely used in solving complex partial differential equations, while the stochastic-weighted particle method has been commonly used in numerical simulation of aerosol dynamics. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution and growth of aerosol particles in a turbulent planar jet by using the newly developed large eddy simulation (LES)-differentially weighted operator splitting Monte Carlo (DWOSMC) method. Design/methodology/approach: The DWOSMC method is coupled with LES for the numerical simulation of aerosol dynamics in turbulent flows. Findings: Firstly, the newly developed and coupled LES-DWOSMC method is verified by the results obtained from a direct numerical simulation-sectional method (DNS-SM) for coagulation occurring in a turbulent planar jet from available literature. Then, the effects of jet temperature and Reynolds number on the evolution of time-averaged mean particle diameter, normalized particle number concentration and particle size distributions (PSDs) are studied numerically on both coagulation and condensation processes. The jet temperature and Reynolds number are shown to be two important parameters that can be used to control the evolution and pattern of PSD in an aerosol reactor. Originality/value: The coupling between the Monte Carlo method and turbulent flow still encounters many technical difficulties. In addition, the relationship between turbulence, particle properties and collision kernels of aerosol dynamics is not yet well understood due to the theoretical limitations and experimental difficulties. In this paper, we investigate a novel SEIR-A reaction-diffusion COVID-19 system with direct and aerosol transmission. First, the solution's positivity and boundedness for the system are discussed. Then, the system's the basic reproduction number is defined. Further, the uniform persistence of disease when R 0 > 1 is explored. In addition, the system equilibrium's global stability based on R 0 is demonstrated. Next, the system's NSFD scheme is investigated and the discrete system's positivity, boundedness, and global properties are studied. Meantime, global sensitivity analysis on threshold R 0 is investigated. Interestingly, the effects of three strategies, including vaccination, receiving treatment, and wearing a mask, are evaluated numerically. The results suggest that the above three strategies can effectively control the peak and final scale of infection and shorten the duration of the epidemic. Finally, theoretical simulations and instance predictions are used to give several key indicators of the epidemic, including threshold R 0 , peak, time to peak, time to clear cases, and final size. The instance prediction results are as follows: (1) The basic reproduction numbers of Yangzhou and Putian in China are R 0 = 2.5107 and R 0 = 1.8846 , respectively. (2) This epidemic round in Yangzhou will peak at 56 new daily confirmed cases on the 9th day (August 5), and Putian will peat at 37 new daily confirmed cases on the 6th day (September 15). (3) The final scale of infections in Yangzhou and Putian reached 570 and 205 cases, respectively. (4) The Yangzhou epidemic is expected to be completely cleared on the 25th day (August 21). In addition, the Putian epidemic will continue for 15 days and be cleared on September 24. The analysis results mean that we should improve our immunity by actively vaccinating, reducing the possibility of aerosol transmission by wearing masks. Purpose The purpose of this work was to study the influence of particles and fiber material properties on the deposition efficiency. Collection of aerosol particles in the particular steps of their production, and purification of the air at the workplace and the atmospheric environment requires the efficient method of separation of particulate matter from the carrier gas. There are many papers published in the past years in which the deposition of particles on fibrous collectors is considered. Most of them assume that collisions between particles and collector surfaces are 100% effective.Design/methodology/approach For the purpose of this work, the lattice Boltzmann model was used to describe fluid dynamics, whereas the solid particles motion was modeled by the Brownian dynamics. The interactions between particles and surfaces were modeled using an energy-balanced oscillatory model.Findings The results show significant impact of material properties on filter performance.Practical implications Obtained results may provide useful information for the proper design of a filtration process and the production of filters with long service life.Originality/value In addition, the results presented in this work show that some assumptions of the classical filtration theory lead to an overestimation of deposition efficiency. This paper presents a sectional Eulerian aerosol model for size-dependent droplet deposition at walls of the domain, driven by both diffusion and inertia. The model is based on the internally mixed assumption and employs the formulation for compressible aerosols. It is validated in a bent pipe geometry against models and experimental and numerical data from literature. Good agreement is found in both the diffusion and inertial deposition regimes. To improve the overprediction of inertial deposition by a boundary treatment that adopts zero-gradient droplet wall velocity, we use a corrected wall velocity, based on an analytical solution of the droplet motion near the wall. In the bent pipe setting the corrected wall velocity is found to reduce the overprediction of deposition and is less sensitive to grid refinement. We also show that refining the computational mesh near the pipe wall improves the predicted deposition efficiency, significantly. Finally, we present a parameter study varying the Reynolds number and the bend curvature. The deposition efficiency curve is recorded for droplet diameters ranging from the nanometer scale to beyond the micrometer scale, which is a unique contribution of this paper. The complete size range is simulated in only one simulation, due to the sectional approach. In the diffusion-dominated regime an increase in Reynolds number leads to a gradual enhancement of deposition. In the inertial regime, where droplet drift dominates deposition, a much stronger dependence on the Reynolds number is found. The dependence of the deposition on the bend curvature is less pronounced. The results shown in this paper establish the role of Eulerian simulation in predicting deposition of aerosol droplets and are useful for understanding size-dependent aerosol deposition in other more complex confined geometries. Hygroscopic growth of aerosol particles due to increasing relative humidity in the atmosphere is characterized by their hygroscopicity parameter κ and their hygroscopic growth factor GF. A technique to calculate the two using PM2.5 data from two optical counting sensors is examined. Only one of the two instruments is equipped with a drying channel, and therefore differences between ambient and dry air concentrations can be observed when both are working simultaneously. Based on the definition of the hygroscopic growth factor as the ratio between an aerosol particle's wet and dry diameter, a relationship including PM values is reached through the assumption of particle spherical shape and basic geometry. Aerosol particles from marine and urban sources were sampled during a week of measurements in two locations, in Norderney, Germany during April 2021 and in Rødby, Denmark, during September 2022. Calculated GF and κ values were related to the origin of the air mass using back trajectory modeling (NOAA HYSPLIT) and by comparing the results to their expected values and fits on theoretical growth curves. It was found that κ = 0.6 ± 0.1 when continental air was sampled (agreeing with ammonium sulphate's κ = 0.61) and κ = 1.1 ± 0.1 when marine air was sampled (agreeing with sea salt's same value). The GF estimates also matched their respective expected values within a deviation of 1s. For the measurements in Rødby, particle number size distributions for the cases of marine sourced concentrations showed a peak at 1 to 2 µm, which is similar to previous studies of Baltic sea aerosol particle size distribution and structure. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to investigate aerosol evolution in a planar mixing layer from a Lagrangian point of view. After using Monte Carlo (MC) method to simulate the evolution of aerosol dynamics along particles trajectories, the particles size distributions are obtained, which are unavailable in mostly used methods of moments. Design/methodology/approach -- Nucleation and growth of dibuty1 phthalate (DBP) particles are simulated using the quadrature method of moments in a planar mixing layer, where a fast hot stream with DBP vapor is mixing with a slow cool stream without vapor. Trajectories of aerosol particles are recorded. MC method is used to simulate the aerosol evolution along trajectories. Findings -- Investigation on aerosol evolution along the trajectories prompts to classify these trajectories into three groups: first, trajectories away from the active nucleation zone; second, trajectories starting from the active nucleation zone; and third, trajectories crossing over the active nucleation zone. Particle size distributions (psds) along selected representative trajectories are investigated. The psd evolution exhibits interesting behavior due to the synthetic effects of nucleation and condensation. Condensation growth tends to narrow down the psd, and form a sharp front on the side of big particle size. Nucleation is able to broaden the psd through generating the smallest particles. The duration and strength of nucleation have significant effect on the shape of psd. Originality/value -- As far as the authors knowledge, it is the first simulation of aerosol evolution that takes a Lagrangian point of view, and uses MC simulation along particles trajectories to provide the particles size distribution. Abstract: This paper presents a simple aerosol transport model together with specific boundary conditions, which can be easily implemented in a CFD code in order to calculate particulate concentrations at any point in a dilute gas-particle flow. The low-inertia of the particles considered (aerodynamic diameter less than 50μm) enables a simplified Eulerian model to be proposed (“diffusion–inertia”), which consists of a single transport equation of aerosol concentration considering sedimentation, deviation from fluid streamlines and migration effects. Specific study of deposition has made it possible to develop a new boundary condition approach at smooth walls based on semi-empirical deposition laws, which determines the particle flux towards the wall in the boundary layer for any deposition regime and any surface orientation from the computed CFD variables. These transport and deposition models can be used for a very wide range of geometries (from elementary devices to rooms of various volumes), in industrial applications dealing with particulate contamination. This study investigates the optimum usage of the new APOLLO Next Generation (APOLLO_NG) cloud retrieval scheme in the Heliosat-4 solar surface irradiance retrieval scheme. APOLLO_NG replaces the previously used APOLLO scheme and introduces a probabilistic cloud mask instead of binary cloud masking used previously. A cloud probability threshold of 1% was found optimal for the usage of the Heliosat-4 cloud scheme. For direct irradiances, the use of an apparent optical depth in optically thin as well as in optically thick, but broken cloud conditions, was investigated. While for thin clouds the cloud optical thickness (COT) modification factor as known from literature was confirmed, a COT modification factor of 0.2 for optically thick, but broken clouds was identified. Furthermore, an improved calibration of the SEVIRI instrument was implemented. The updated method is applied for MSG SEVIRI observations without any additional bias-correction and validated for Europe and Africa against observations from the BSRN and EnerMENA networks. Special focus is placed on the central European region affected mainly by clouds and the North- African region with desert dust aerosols as well as clouds. The hourly SSI showed clear improvements. The relative bias of GHI ranges between -7 and 1.3% with a mean value of -2.8%. The relative RMSE of GHI is between 10.3 and 25.5% and has a mean value of 13.7%. The relative bias of DIR ranges between -16.6 and 17.8% and has a mean value of -3.3%. The relative RMSE of DIR is between 16.7 and 49% with 29.7% as mean. For European stations without strong aerosol effects but larger cloud impacts, the average relative GHI and DIR bias is -1.3% and 3.3% with mean relative GHI and DIR RMSE of 15.1% and 30.6% respectively.
