"Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nord-Amerika," by Friedrich Ratzel is a beautiful volume, well printed, with large, clear type, on fine paper and with neatly executed maps. Altogether it is a good piece of work and one which will be useful to Americans as well as to Germans and others who are in the habit of adding to their stock of knowledge through the medium of the German language. Ratzel has worked out the main facts from the enormous mass of material he has been obliged to overhaul in the preparation of a volume which professes to give the reader a pretty complete synopsis of the physical features and climatology of an area of between three and four millions of square miles.

The article presents information on recent publications in the U.S. of August 30, 1894. A recent publication of the Weather Bureau in Washington DC is the summary of the international meteorological observations. The daily simultaneous observations of which this is a summary were taken with the plan formulated at the Meteorological Congress in Vienna, Austria in 1873. From 1875 to 1887 inclusive, these simultaneous observations were taken at all the signal stations in the United States, at nearly five hundred places in other portions of the world, and on nearly six hundred vessels in all seas, the whole aggregating upwards of 150,000 monthly reports, representing more than 5,000,000 daily observations.

The article features Houston, Texas after 90 years as a boom city in 1953. It describes the growth spurt from 21st place to 14th place among U.S. cities between 1940 and 1950, the doubts about a sweltering southern city being able to keep up the fast growth pace, and the continued growth with value added by manufacture rising 261% and retail sales 279%. It details Houston's appeal to capitalists, citing oil as the source of wealth for the city's 1,000 millionaires. The Houston life is described, the climate, the Houstonian personality, and its culture.

The article focuses on the life and scenery of Newfoundland. It states that a journey from New York to Newfoundland in summer is delightful, not only because its transports one to a cooler climate, but as bringing one into contact with modes of life and novel surroundings which are unique on this hemisphere. The island justifies the name given to it four centuries ago, for every traveler has to rediscover it for himself. Although there exist three systems of railroads, almost encircling the island, no timetable is published in a railway guide, in a public newspaper, or on a separate sheet. The traveler must therefore constitute himself an explorer and investigate Newfoundland for himself.

It is curious how State lines mark differences in the U.S. There are no climatic differences between Kansas and Missouri, and small climatic differences between Kansas and Nebraska; yet the three States hold populations in which are marked differences-differences at least which Americans may distinguish. Doubtless to Chinamen all Americans look alike! But Americans know the differences between Americans North, East, South, and West and dwellers in a section know minor differences between persons living in neighboring States in the same section of the U.S. The larger sectional differences in Americans may be somewhat the result of climatic influences.

Several letters to the editor are presented in response to articles in previous issues, including one on the climate and surroundings of Chattanooga, Tennessee, one letter on different kinds of birds found in Michigan, and one letter on large fishes found in the San Gabriel River.

This article presents information on the book "Climatic Change: Evidence, Causes and Effects," edited by Harlow Shapley. Most scientists are now agreed that the climate is again changing over very great areas of the world. This process has been in operation for at least 65 years and perhaps a century, and has been accentuated in the past two decades. This change in climate may be a mere temporary swing of a few decades or centuries, an insignificant period from the viewpoint of the geologists. The change may, again, mark the end of what Shapley calls the Little Ice Age, which began in certain regions about the time of Britain's first Queen Elizabeth, and has lasted until the present.

This article presents information about the book "Aero Therapeutics or, the Treatment of Lung Disease by Climate (The Lumeleian Lectures for 1893)," by Charles Theodore Williams. It is especially in the cases of diseases of the lungs, permeated as those organs constantly are with air, that the state of the atmosphere is distinctly important, for whatever part the bacillus of tuberculosis takes in the causation of consumption, its propagation is greatly modified by the atmosphere its victim breathes. The book is probably the best treatise on climatology in its relations to health.

Second is the belief that country people are too preoccupied with the weather. The author asserts that even if there seems to be a difference in the appearance of nature, still one can observe the indications of its continuity. The weather becomes an all-important phenomenon in the city, while in the country one takes the weather as it comes.

This article presents information on the heavy snowstorm in the U.S. It is informed that the snowstorm of 10th and 11th February, 1933, was the heaviest in four years. In the gleaming morning the old white house looked more then ever a part of its ancient setting. Snow was heaped over the door sills and molded high on the steep roof. Only the freshly shoveled path leading away from the back door connected it with the world. Down the meadow, stone walls and great boulders were smooth white mounds or mountains.

The scenery in such country has also opened an opportunity for him to try watercolor as an art medium instead of focusing on oil.
