This Cumulative Index is intended to provide ready reference to all material published in the "American Journal of Physics" in Volumes 1 (1933) to 20 (1952). The Index is subdivided into two parts: an Author Index listing the names of the contributors of papers, notes, letters, book reviews, and abstracts of addresses; and an Analytical Subject Index listing the titles of papers, notes, letters, book reviews, addresses, and digests of periodical literature. The Author Index lists the names of contributors alphabetically; the Analytical Subject Index lists the titles of contributions according to a Classification of Subjects to be found on page 2 of this Index.

In a paper in the November 1970 Communications of the ACM, V.Y. Lum introduced a technique of file indexing named combined indices. This technique permitted decreased retrieval time at the cost of increased storage space. This paper examines combined indices under conditions of file usage with different fractions of retrieval and update. Tradeoff curves are developed to show minimal cost of file usage by grouping various partially combined indices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Presents an index to the December 1970 issue of the journal "Communications of the ACM."

The article reports on the latest regional market outlook in the U.S.' 12 federal reserve districts in 1937-1942, along with the journal's regional income indexes. In district 1, there is a shortage of labor in Maine and Connecticut in spite of slumping employment in light consumer goods lines like shoes, woolens and confectionery. The other districts include the area of New York, the Philadelphia industrial area in Pennsylvania and in Ohio.

The article focuses on the book "Ants, Bees, and Wasps. A Record of Observations on the Habits of the Social Hymenoptera," by John Lubbock. This volume contains the record of various experiments made with ants, bees, and wasps. The object is not to describe the usual habits of these insects but to test their mental condition and powers of sense. The author have carefully marked and watched particular insects and had nests under observation for long periods, even for seven years. There are also five excellent colored lithographic plates, thirty-one figures in the text, a full index, and a list of nearly seventy books and papers referred to.

The article reports on the weekly index of general business activity as of January 27, 1932. It explains the meaning of indexes, for example, for automotive steel buying, construction and electric power production. A chart is presented showing comparative indexes weekly, in 1931 and the five-year average from 1927-1931.

The article analyzes data from the "Business Week" magazine's index of general activity as of August 1931. It reports on the decline of steel ingot production rate to a little less than 31% of capacity, with expectations of a fall peak around 45% of capacity operation. It notes the slightly downward trend in electric power production since July, in contrast to the index which remains steady at 84% of normal. Although the weekly indexes of commodity prices show no change, the first monthly index shows a 2.6% drop since the end of July.

The article discusses the journal's index of business activity in mid-May 1931, which showed that the financial and commodity markets continue to decline. In the week of May 16, 1931, a slight drop in business activity was seen, dropping to 78.4% from 78.7% in the last two weeks. A decline in carloading, steel production and check payment transactions was also seen. The performances of the electric generation and the copper markets are also examined.

The article discusses "The Business Week's" preliminary index of the volume of general business activity for the week ending June 7, 1930. While basic industrial activity is holding up, there is less activity in general trade and commodity prices continue to decline. The index is down to 90.5% of normal compared to the previous week's 92.7% and year-ago level of 108.9%. Steel showed a slight decline to 71% of capacity, with the Steel Corp. steady at 75% while the independents dropped to 67%. Building activity improved slightly, maintaining March levels.

The article offers information on the U.S. economy where industrial indexes continue to rise despite fall in the prices of shares and commodities from their recent highs. It also reports on the increased purchasing of goods by wholesalers and retailers in anticipation of higher prices and costs because of war. It also forecasts a downturn in business next year if the retail sales does not increase or war orders do not materialize.

The article presents a list containing most, but not all, of the manuscript, maps and charts of places now comprised within the U.S. preserved in the Public Record Office, which will prove to be interesting to students of cartography of the U.S. It does, indeed, seem pity that these cartographical treasures are not better known, for, as the utmost facility is given to the inquirer by the staff of the Department, research in this direction is a mere matter of looking over the "Index" and then asking to see what one might may deem worthy of inspection. Maps and charts preserved in the department relate to all parts of the world and are preserved in columns and in cases. They are grouped in some forty-six divisions.

The article discusses the plan of the information and measurement firm A.C. Nielsen Co. to expand its services including the Nielsen Radio Index (NRI) in the U.S. The company seeks to expand the radio index to make it a nationwide basis. The NRI is based on the results of audimeters or mechanical meters attached to radios in sample homes to gauge program listening. The company plans to conduct direct interviews with people in sample homes. It also plans to measure magazine and newspaper readership.

The article presents information on various bibliographies. Falconer Madan of the Bodleian Library has issued, through the Clarendon Press, a second volume on the literature of Oxford, being a study, bibliographical and descriptive, of all known books relating to Oxford printed there and elsewhere during the two hundred years,1450 to 1650. It is a grand piece of work, upwards of seven hundred pages, of which more than one-fifth is an elaborate index. The bulk of the volume describes Oxford books from 1641 to 1650, and in it Madan goes over entirely new ground. During the four years, 1642 to 1646, when Oxford was the Royalist headquarters, the presses were peculiarly prolific. The great collection of Civil War pamphlets collected by George Thomason, now in the British Museum, has alone made possible any adequate description of the output of the presses of Oxford and London during this period.
