EDITOR'S SUMMARY ASIS&T president Lynn Silipigni Connaway announced the new executive director of ASIS&T, Lydia Middleton. Lydia joined ASIS&T ready to lead after Dick Hill's 27 years of service as executive director. Also announced are the keynote speakers for the 2017 Annual Meeting: Richard Marks, head of PlayStation Magic Lab at Sony Interactive Entertainment, and William Powers, best-selling author and research scientist at MIT Media Lab. The Annual Meeting will also have an 80th Anniversary Welcome Reception and panel session, and work is underway for an interactive history exhibit at the meeting, coordinated by Kathryn La Barre. Lynn Silipigni Connaway was invited to spend April 26 through May 7 in Hong Kong as a visiting professor working with the master of library and information management program at the University of Hong Kong. Connaway and past president Nadia Caidi also attended the Council for Scientific Society Presidents in Washington, D.C., May 2017, and ASIS&T partnered with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Earth Day Network for the March for Science. Kristi Wold‐McCormick has been a registrar for the last 16 years, the last four and a half of them as the university registrar at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Before that, she worked in the Registrar's Office at North Dakota State in Fargo. At both institutions, she used PeopleSoft. EDITOR'S SUMMARY The 16th Annual Research Symposium for Special Interest Group/Information Needs, Seeking and Use (SIG/USE) was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The focus of the symposium was information behavior and information practices as applicable to workplaces. As technology grows and shifts on a constant basis, so too must workplaces adapt how information is used and accessed. Newer generations in the workforce are expected to be able to learn many new skills, change careers several times and balance work life from home life with boundaries that are less clear than they used to be. Two presentations given by the 2014 and 2015 winners of the Elfreda A. Chatman Research Proposal Award started off the symposium. The 2016 winners of this award were announced by the awards committee chair, Wade Bishop, and included Karen Fisher of the University of Kentucky and Devon Greyson of the University of British Columbia, Canada. The article focuses on the significance of transitioning and implementing electronic health record (EHR) at community mental health center (CMHC). In 2011, the Heritage Behavioral Health Center in Decatur, Illinois has received a grant for Primary and Behavioral Health Care Integration (PBHCI) and a supplemental grant to enhance the integration of behavioral health and primary health care through the use of EHR. For this transition, the Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) process may be helpful.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY The third annual Virtual Symposium on Information & Technology in the Arts & Humanities, held on April 18 and 19, 2017, centered on a theme of open science in the humanities. Presentations at the Symposium have included topics such as data visualization, historical images, interactive exhibits and linked data. The 2017 theme of open humanities was a starting point for the speakers to consider how open science has and can impact the world of humanities in various ways. Speakers at the symposium discussed analyzing writing practices on the internet using web scrapers, data management in the humanities, visual literacy skills of graduate and undergraduate students and the challenge researchers face in trying to keep up with publications in their field. EDITOR'S SUMMARY The voice of the performing arts is an important - though seldom heard - disciplinary component of information science research. The Open Symphony, a collaboration between a performing musician and computer science students, allowed for creative audience interaction with live music performances. But such interdisciplinary collaboration is difficult and needs to be put within the larger context of questions surrounding value, individual contribution in artistic expression and ownership in the performing arts. Indeed, tensions around the economics of art and commercial versus academic value may hinder collaborations between artists and academia, but with the right framework and definitions of value these efforts could lead to additional forms of cross-disciplinary exploration. EDITOR'S SUMMARY Mexico's political history has seen several parties rise and fall in the 21st century, and amidst the many transitions, the Mexican people have seen a divide growing in their society. This divide covers many areas, such as economic standing, access to healthcare and education, and access to digital technology. The digital divide means that access to internet service and smartphones is often limited to the affluent. However, access to technology is just one aspect of the digital divide. Citizens also require training and education in how to use the technology and where to access information. Currently, the vast majority of internet users in Mexico are 24 years of age and younger, meaning that older generations need the access and education in technology use. With more Mexican citizens given access to technology, more can actively participate in government and create a government that they deserve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the move of DeVry University officials to use the Information Mapping computer software to ensure that everyone understands and follows the school policies. Traning and policy manager for academic affairs Susan Alderson reportedly commented that the software makes it easier for them to improve policies and productivity and reduce interpretation errors. It details how DeVry redesigned the policy format and the response of the system users.

While some individuals prefer to think they make decisions independently, uninfluenced by any salesperson, few major decisions are made without input from others. Considering another's suggestion requires trust in the person, and selling products, including information products to libraries, depends on a trusting relationship between the buyer and seller. With limited budgets, libraries must be selective in choosing subscription-based products. Yearly renewals of a product depend not only on the quality and fit of the product but on a positive working relationship with the representative. Sales meetings demand careful preparation, with understanding of the organization's long- and short-term goals and priorities. A symposium organized by McGill University's iSchool students and director brought together past, current and future ASIS&T presidents and board members to discuss trends in information science research. The discussion revealed diverse opinions on the definition of information science, concerns about research practices and expected directions for future research. Definitions of the field focused on social questions in an information society, the intersection of information and technology and strategies to better connect information with users. Panelists exhorted attendees, many being students, to tackle big questions, consider the applications of their research and collaborate with other disciplines. The critical role and strength of information science should drive robust and compelling research, addressing areas of need from the personal to the national level. Specific topics needing investigation include big data, information security, information as a stimulus for creativity, personal information management and better integration with technology. During a time when a pandemic has affected the entire world, the New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies (NJAMHAA) wants its members to know they are in good hands with the assistance of the NJAMHAA Information Technology (IT) Project. More than 40 years ago, NJAMHAA was awarded a grant from the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) to assist mental health providers with their technology purchases and to provide help‐desk services; little did we know that our services today would be more important than ever. This partnership continues to this day and may still be a unique model in this country whereby a behavioral health trade association helps support the technology infrastructure for its members. Information policy extends to our acknowledgements of website statements about data privacy and sharing, as we routinely check a box to gain access to a site. Users rarely give much thought to whether they can trust the site sponsor to protect personal information. While privacy is often the chief concern in discussions of gathering, storing and using information, trust in the sponsor, whether governmental or corporate, is crucial. Governing bodies recognize democracy, fairness and a right to information, covering both access and privacy, as part of a social and political contract. Yet with data being collected on a massive scale, legitimate concerns about data misuse can undermine our trust in such fundamental understandings, leaving transparency as a critical element. The ASIS&T Special Interest Group/Information Policy (SIG/IFP) will explore the issue of trust during a workshop at the 2014 Annual Meeting, considering its foundations and evolution and questioning its justification in the age of big data. The article focuses on requirement of careful evaluation of an electronic health record (EHR) by all health centres in the U.S. It informs that EHR is more comprehensive then electronic medical record (EMR) as EHR contains information of all providers involved in a patient's health care and EMR contains data gathered in one location. At the 2013 ASIS&T Annual Meeting, Jorge García discussed the transformation of new information technologies from imagined abstractions to reality. Through old and current advertisements and interviews with futurist Arthur C. Clarke and communication theorist Marshall McLuhan, García illustrated the progressive revolutions embodied by the telephone, a shift from commuting to communicating, early visions of the Internet, new media and big data. Handling the change requires a continuous process of abstracting reality, augmenting, assimilating and creating models to represent its key features. García recognized data as an asset to be distilled and classified, stored in expanding volumes and transmitted at astounding speeds. Layered with contextual information and supportive technology, data can be used to enhance human intelligence and capability. The article reports on a survey of 837 U.S. public substance use disorder treatment providers which was conducted by the State Associations of Addiction Services. The survey found that most public substance abuse treatment programs are not prepared for health care reform and that they are lagging in medication assisted treatment, marketing, billing and information technology.

The Registrar's Office also bring your institution fully into the digital age by improving services and trying out new initiatives. That was the lesson Reid Kallman, associate registrar of enrollment and records services at the University of Colorado at Boulder, learned while working in the Registrar's Office at Stanford University under Thomas Black. It was in that environment that Kallman said he first started to develop a passion and drive for the registrar position. “I began to work more with technology and see how the Registrar's Office can work with their IT team and third‐party vendors to solve student, faculty, and staff pain points in their day‐to‐day work,” Kallman said. The article discusses the need for U.S. federal law to protect patient privacy regarding substance abuse treatment information. According to Deven McGraw of the Health Privacy Project at the Center for Democracy and Technology, federal regulations alone are inadequate to protect substance abuse treatment information. He recommends that the U.S. Congress should enhance the patient privacy protections under the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The article presents the view of Essentialink LLC chief executive officer (CEO) Bill Douglas on how CEOs could save their organization's money and reduce their expenses during difficult economic situation. According to him, they have to think about outsourcing their information technology operation to a managed information technology (IT) service provider. It also cites the expensive mistakes that organizations usually make like overstaffing highly paid workers for maintenance and security work.

The article focuses on the number of steps taken by Wanda Burch, director of student academic records and account at Berea College in Kentucky, to improve the function of the university. It mentions that use of the 10 student-workers of the university office to help with degree audit, review faculty minutes of the meetings, and complete other tasks that are not assigned to them.
