A corpus of research exists which focuses on the value of partnerships between police and academic researchers. Some of the literature highlights the potential positive outcomes of successful partnerships for police in terms of informing policing practices and for academic researchers as a way of enhancing the impact of their research. Other studies identify the potential obstacles for developing successful and sustainable partnerships such as obtaining funding to conduct projects as well as overcoming a traditional mutual mistrust between police and academics. This paper provides a reflection on a successful partnership between Queensland Police Service and researchers at James Cook University in Townsville with reference to a project which focused on police as the victims of violent assaults in the course of their everyday duties. This co-authored paper assisted members of the research team to engage in a reflective practice to identify 'what works' well in partnerships, such as having sufficient time to develop a genuine rapport, working within a participatory methodological framework for conducting the research and co-producing a set of outcomes couched in accessible language in order to inform police practices. Knowledge distillation (KD) is a successful technique for transferring knowledge from one machine learning model to another model. Specifically, the idea of KD has been widely used for various tasks such as model compression and knowledge transfer between different models. However, existing studies in KD have overlooked the possibility that dark knowledge (i.e., soft targets) obtained from a complex and large model (a.k.a., a teacher model) may be either incorrect or insufficient. Such knowledge can hinder the effective learning of another small model (a.k.a., a student model). In this paper, we propose the professor model , which refines the soft target from the teacher model to improve KD. The professor model aims to achieve two goals; 1) improving the prediction accuracy and 2) capturing the inter-class correlation of the soft target from the teacher model. We first design the professor model by reformulating a conditional adversarial autoencoder (CAAE). Then, we devise two KD strategies using both teacher and professor models. Our empirical study demonstrates that the professor model effectively improves KD in three benchmark datasets: CIFAR100, TinyImagenet, and ILSVRC2015. Moreover, our comprehensive analysis shows that the professor model is much more effective than employing the stronger teacher model, in which parameters are greater than the sum of the teacher's and professor's parameters. While the author is now the director of an industrial research lab, many of his views were formed during his academic years. A set of guiding principles for effective university to industry technology transfer has emerged from these experiences and from many discussions with colleagues in industry and academia. These principles are technology transfer is a contact sport. People, not papers, transfer technology. This means that faculty members and their industrial counterparts need to get to know one another by visiting, by giving talks and by indepth discussion of technical issues. Relationships between professors and industrial researchers must be built and nurtured over time.
