Ants that consume caffeine are able to locate food sources more quickly, suggesting that the drug enhances their learning abilities. Researchers conducted an experiment using Argentine ants and found that ants that consumed low or moderate doses of caffeine were able to find the food source more efficiently with each attempt, while ants without caffeine took longer and more meandering paths. Nonnative, invasive ants, and especially the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, are a widespread threat to ground‐nesting wildlife. In this paper I describe a method of controlling fire ants using hot water. The hot water approach was applied to reduce fire ant impacts on sea turtles and ground‐nesting songbirds and to demonstrate its utility in protection of different ground‐nesting species in different habitats. Fire ant controls using hot water provided 90% or greater control, significantly improving survival of both turtle and bird hatchlings, without the use of pesticides. The success of the method and the availability of necessary equipment shows that hot water control of fire ant populations should be considered as a tool for wildlife affected by fire ants and is useful for a wide variety of scenarios where fire ant controls are desirable or necessary. The method does require that 1) wildlife nest locations are known and that 2) nearby fire ant colonies can be found and treated with hot water. The method can be used as a complement to broadcast or bait‐station baiting strategies or as a stand‐alone method for managing fire ants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The traditional observation method is challenging because many ants can interact with each other, interfering with perceiving motion. Pixel-level motion estimation can perform this more robustly and accurately. This paper focuses on optical flow estimation to observe ant movements from an imaging system to perceive the motion through the sequence of images. It is known that the optical flow methods suffer from the issue of ill-defined edges and boundaries of the moving objects. An edge-preserving filter-based optical flow method is constructed to estimate the motion of ants in outdoor complex scenarios. In this paper an ant colony system (ACS) with communication strategies is developed. The artificial ants are partitioned into several groups. Seven communication methods for updating the pheromone level between groups in ACS are proposed and work on the traveling salesman problem using our system is presented. Experimental results based on three well-known traveling salesman data sets demonstrate the proposed ACS with communication strategies are superior to the existing ant colony system (ACS) and ant system (AS) with similar or better running times.
