The author shares his experiences during his time working as a camp manager for an archaeological team dispatched in 2012 to re-excavate the Malakunanja II rock shelter located within the Kakadu National Park in Australia's Northern Territory. In particular, he celebrates how the differing knowledge-systems of the archaeological team and the indigenous Mirarr people have enriched each other during the course of the re-excavation project to form a clearer picture of Australia's Aboriginal past.

The article focuses on several extinct species of megafauna in Australia and discusses possible reasons for their extinction, including the Ice Age and hunting by humans. The research done with fossils found in Australian caves is discussed, including the fossils of the extinct species Diprotodon.
