The lithium dienolate of (I) reacts with the cycloalkenones (II) to form the vinylcyclopropanes (III) which produce the cyclopentenes (IV) upon pyrolysis.

When the free‐radical chlorination of an alkane (I) (2,3‐dimethylbutane is studied as well) is conducted in an invert solvent at low concentration of (I) (0.05‐3.6 M), in addition to the expected monochloride (II), unexpectedly high yields of dichlorides (→ (III)) are produced and the plot of (II)/(III) vs.
