La resonancia magnética cardiaca con realce tardío de gadolinio (RMC-RTG) permite la detección no invasiva de la fibrosis auricular izquierda en pacientes con fibrilación auricular (FA). Sin embargo, se desconoce si se puede utilizar la misma metodología en la aurícula derecha (AD). Nuestro objetivo fue definir un umbral estandarizado para caracterizar la fibrosis auricular derecha mediante RMC-RTG.

Sustained re‐entrant tachyarrhythmias treatment has become pivotal in the grown‐up congenital heart patients clinical management. Cardiac LGE‐MRI tissue characterization integrated with high definition electroanatomic map could allow fast recognition and effective treatment of substrate of tachyarrhythmias. Cardiac LGE‐MRI areas were suggestive of post‐surgical changes both in atrium and ventricle. High‐density electro‐anatomical map localized areas of slow conduction identifying conducting isthmuses of re‐entrant arrhythmias.

La supervivencia relativa se ha utilizado habitualmente como medida de la evolución temporal del exceso de riesgo de mortalidad en cohortes de pacientes diagnosticados de cáncer, teniendo en cuenta la mortalidad de una población de referencia. Una vez estimado el exceso de riesgo de mortalidad pueden calcularse tres probabilidades acumuladas a un tiempo T: 1) la probabilidad de fallecer asociada a la causa de diagnóstico inicial (enfermedad en estudio), 2) la probabilidad de fallecer asociada a otras causas, y 3) la probabilidad de supervivencia absoluta en la cohorte a un tiempo T. Este trabajo presenta la aplicación WebSurvCa(https://shiny.snpstats.net/WebSurvCa/), mediante la cual los registros de cáncer de base hospitalaria y poblacional, y los registros de otras enfermedades, estiman dichas probabilidades en sus cohortes seleccionando como población de referencia la mortalidad de la comunidad autónoma que consideren.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects on growth performance, intermediary metabolism and welfare of the inclusion of two commercial microalgae-based ingredients called LB-ChromaBream (LB-CB) and LB-ChromaBream-plus (LB-CBplus) in the diet of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) close to commercial size. For this purpose, fish of ~182 g of initial body mass were fed to satiety (ad libitum) for 41 days with three different diets: (i) CONTROL diet (CTRL), with a commercial-like formulation; (ii) LB-CB diet, with a 10 % inclusion of microalgal product; (iii) LB-CBplus diet, with a 10 % inclusion of the same product but enzymatically hydrolysed to increase the bioavailability of the nutrients. The results obtained show that the use of these microalgal products leads an overall improvement in productive parameters in terms of growth (15 % in SGR) and feed efficiency (11 %), as well as a significant reduction in circulating cortisol with the LB-CBplus diet. Observations on plasma and liver metabolites, and particularly on hepatic metabolic enzymes, collectively indicate that microalgae supplementation of feed lead to a better use of carbohydrates as a source of energy in the liver and other tissues, potentially sparing triglycerides within this tissue, and a channelling hepatic triglycerides to fuels growth. Finally, the specimens fed the supplemented diets experienced a substantial improvement in intestinal health, achieved by longer intestines, a higher transepithelial resistance and better apparent permeability measured by electrophysiological methods, especially those fed LB-CBplus, which could explain the increase in productive performance by improving nutrient assimilation. In conclusion, this study shows that the experimental feeds, especially the one containing biotechnologically treated microalgae, are suitable for improving some important indicators of growth performance and physiological condition of gilthead seabream, thus revealing the potential for their inclusion in new functional feeds for this species at an advanced stage of the production cycle.

Se expone una serie de casos de pacientes con hiperostosis reactiva secundaria a la utilización prolongada de prostaglandinas en el contexto de cardiopatías congénitas complejas, que por su condición hemodinámica requirieron mantener el cortocircuito vascular de izquierda a derecha para su supervivencia. Se muestran las características imaginológicas típicas en radiografía convencional y se analizan los detalles fisiopatológicos y los diagnósticos diferenciales.

Studies of tannin concentrations in forage plant species in arid south-eastern Spain were conducted to assess the relationship between tannins and use of plants by domestic livestock. Tannin concentrations were measured in the most important forage plants (28 shrub species and 12 herbaceous species) in each of the four seasons of the year. Twenty-five percent of the shrubs were rich in tannins. The shrubs, Helianthemum almeriensisand Dorycnium pentapyllum, had the highest concentrations of tannins (4·5% and 4·0% in dry matter, respectively). With the exception ofSedum sediforme, herbaceous species had no tannins.

The presence of protease inhibitors in different ingredients used in fish feeds may negatively affect their digestive utilisation. The effect of inhibitors present in several protein sources on the activity of digestive proteases of sea bream was assessed using ‘in vitro’ assays. Inhibition produced by extracts of plant proteins ranged from 25 to 50% of total activity, whereas that obtained using animal protein sources ranged from 1 to 20 %. The exception was ovoalbumin, which showed the highest measured value (62 %). A plot of the inhibition values obtained by changing the relative concentrations enzyme/inhibitor resulted in different curves for different protein sources. The use of sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) zymograms allowed visualisation of the aforementioned differences in inhibition. The importance of measuring protease inhibition in the preliminary evaluation of fish feed ingredients is discussed.

The age‐related evolution and ontogenic origin of the ovotestes in fertile females of the Spanish mole (Talpa occidentalis) were studied. Volume of the ovotestis and its ovarian and testicular components, size of the epididymis and testicular cords, number of ovarian follicles and testicular cords, uterus weight, and age index were analyzed statistically in a large sample of young and adult individuals of this species. Comparison of means and linear correlation analyses were done. Most variables were shown to be age dependent, with a period of rapid change during puberty. In adult animals, volume of the ovarian portion and uterus weight followed a seasonal cycle of sexual activity. Interindividual variability was evident in most of the variables investigated except for the number of testicular cords per ovotestis, which remained unchanged throughout the animal's life and hence was not inversely correlated with the number of ovarian follicles. This finding ruled out an ovary‐testis transdifferentiation hypothesis for the ontogenic origin of the testicular tissue in the ovotestes of female moles. An alternative hypothesis based in the absence of oocytes in a portion of the undifferentiated fetal gonad is proposed in accordance with a new general model for mammalian sex determination. © 1996 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

In the Fall semester of 1993 the Mathematics Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania implemented a Mathematica-based calculus curriculum. This paper profiles the preparation done during the year prior to implementation and the curriculum selection process. A summary of the problems encountered in the first year and the resulting modifications for the subsequent semesters are given. Calculus topics where the use of Mathematica and/or the CALCULUS & Mathematica curriculum appear to be particularly beneficial or particularly ineffective are outlined. The paper also summarizes the assessment of the curriculum implementation, some of the factors that contributed to its demise, and strategies to follow for a more successful experience.

We investigated the origin of XX sex reversal in the insectivorous mole Talpa occidentalis. Cytogenetic, histological and hormonal studies indicate that all XX individuals analyzed from two different populations are true hermaphrodites, with ovotestes. This suggests that XX sex reversal may be the norm in this species. The inter-sexes are functional fertile females and the trait is transmitted and maintained in the population. Intersexes lack the Y chromosome gene SRY (sex determining region Y gene), shown to be the testis determining gene. These results suggest that XX intersex moles may have arisen from a mutation of a gene located downstream from SRY/TDY in the testis determining pathway.

This study hypothesized that the shorter intrinsic PR interval observed in women allows a greater degree of fusion with intrinsic conduction, achieving a shorter QRS interval duration and, thus, a better response.

The red (Ailurus fulgens) and giant (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) pandas are mammalian carnivores convergently adapted to a bamboo feeding diet. However, whereas Ailurusforages almost entirely on younger leaves, fruits and tender trunks, Ailuropodarelies more on trunks and stems. Such difference in foraging mode is considered a strategy for resource partitioning where they are sympatric. Here, we use finite-element analysis to test for mechanical differences and similarities in skull performance between Ailurusand Ailuropodarelated to diet. Feeding simulations suggest that the two panda species have similar ranges of mechanical efficiency and strain energy profiles across the dentition, reflecting their durophagous diet. However, the stress distributions and peaks in the skulls of Ailurusand Ailuropodaare remarkably different for biting at all tooth locations. Although the skull of Ailuropodais capable of resisting higher stresses than the skull of Ailurus, the latter is able to distribute stresses more evenly throughout the skull. These differences in skull biomechanics reflect their distinct bamboo feeding preferences. Ailurususes repetitive chewing in an extended mastication to feed on soft leaves, and Ailuropodaexhibits shorter and more discrete periods of chomp-and-swallow feeding to break down hard bamboo trunks.
